While the messaging app has long let you change the background that appears behind your messages, that's always been a single wallpaper for all your chats.

Now that's finally changed - WhatsApp is rolling out an update that lets you set a custom wallpaper for each of your chats, along with a whole bunch more wallpapers to choose from as well as your own images.

If you've got the latest version of the app downloaded, you should soon be able to follow the steps below to give each of your chats a more distinctive flavour. We've also included details on how to set a different wallpaper for when your phone's in dark mode. 

Note, though, that this feature isn't applied in all regions - for example, you can't change your wallpaper per chat on iOS in the UK at present.

How to set custom WhatsApp chat wallpapers

On Android:

  • At the top of your chosen chat, select the “...” menu
  • Select Wallpaper
  • Go through the flow and select your choice of wallpaper 

On iOS:

  • At the top of a chat, select the group name
  • On the Group Info (or Chat Info) menu, tap Wallpaper & Sound
  • Select your chosen wallpaper

If you're concerned about your organisation's security, this is a no-brainer.

  • Turn on dark mode from your device settings (if Android 10 or above) or from WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Theme (if Android 9 or below).
  • Then follow the above steps to change your wallpaper
  • The two choices should be saved for their respective modes

On iOS:

  • Turn on dark mode from your device settings
  • Change your wallpaper using the steps above
  • Again, your choices for light and dark mode should be saved

WhatsApp offers its users the ability to customize the backgrounds of chats, either all at once or chat by chat. Here's how to change your WhatsApp wallpaper for all chats and for specific chats on both iPhone and Android.

1. Open WhatsApp. If you have an iPhone, tap the Settings tab at the bottom-right of the screen. If you have an Android, tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the screen, then tap Settings.

2. Tap Chats.

5. On the Preview page, tap Cancel to keep browsing or Set to choose the wallpaper as your background for all chats.

Quick tip: On Android phones, you can set your background to dark mode from within WhatsApp. If you have an iPhone, WhatsApp will only be in dark mode if it is enabled in your system settings.

You can further customize your WhatsApp experience by having different wallpapers for different chats.

On Android:

1. In WhatsApp, open the chat you want to change the wallpaper for.

How to set wallpapers for each chat individually in WhatsApp for iOS and Android

The new WhatsApp feature is available for both iPhone and Android smartphones.

How to set the wallpaper for chat in Android version of WhatsApp

1. Please update WhatsApp to the latest version.

2. Launch the application and open the chat where you want to change the wallpaper.

3. Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and go to the "Wallpaper" section.

4. Here you will see the wallpaper for the default theme. Click on the "Edit" button and you'll be presented with a selection of bright, dark, and solid colors, as well as the option to select photos from the Gallery.

5. Select a wallpaper and click the Set Wallpaper button in the preview window. Select the desired option.

The wallpaper you have applied for each chat will remain even if you apply a shared wallpaper from WhatsApp settings.

3. Tap a contact to open the chat settings.

4. In the contact settings you will find the "Wallpaper and sound" parameter, click on it and you will see a list of available wallpapers. Select the desired wallpaper and click "Install".

Here you can also set your own wallpaper from your gallery.
