Want to find out which so-called “friend” of yours blocked you on Instagram?
We put together this tutorial so you can find out once and for all.
Picture this:
You’re casually scrolling through your Insta feed. Suddenly, a thought pops into your head.
“Huh, I haven’t seen “So-and-so’s” pictures recently. I wonder what they are up to?”
You search for their profile, but their IG username doesn’t pop up.
You try again and again — nothing. This person didn’t fall off the face of the earth, right?
News alert! You might have been blocked!
People block users on Instagram for all kinds of reasons. You might have been “friend dumped”—sad! Maybe a former flame of yours just couldn’t take it anymore. It could be all those #bikini selfies. Or maybe they just deactivated their account…No matter the reason, you’ve got to know!
If only you could find out somehow…
In this blog post, we’ll show you how to check if you’ve been blocked on IG—without downloading a sketchy app from the App Store.
Who blocked you on Instagram?
Follow these steps to find out:
-
Open the Instagram App and click the Search Button
-
Search for the culprit’s username. If it shows up, you’re not blocked. If it doesn’t, continue with Step 3.
-
Go to a mutual friend’s Instagram. (The closer they are with the suspect, the better.)
-
Go through their posts, likes, comments, and followers to see if the suspect’s username appears.
-
If the user’s name appears, click on it.
-
If you click on the user’s profile and are unable to see their content, even though it says they have a number of posts at the top of their profile, then they have blocked you.
-
If the user’s Instagram profile is set to Private, then their name will still appear on the search list. So, they have either blocked you or deactivated their Instagram account if they don’t show up.

Do you suspect that someone you recently quarrelled with has blocked you on Instagram? Instagram does not allow you to see a list of people who have blocked you by default. In fact, the platform won't even notify you when someone blocks you.
There are, however, some methods you can use to find out if someone has blocked you on Instagram. We'll discuss seven of those in this article.
Why Someone Might Block You on Instagram
People might block you on Instagram for several reasons, including:
- Spamming their messages.
- Tagging them in irrelevant posts.
- Leaving inappropriate comments on their content.
If you've broken a real-life friendship or relationship, the other person might also have blocked you so they can move on.
Have I Been Blocked on Instagram?
So, how do you find out if someone you know has blocked you on Instagram? Below are seven methods you can try.
1. Search for Their Username
2 Images
If you search for someone's username or Instagram handle in the Instagram search bar, you will not see their account if they have blocked you.
You will be able to view their profile and all of their posts if you're not blocked. If they have turned their profile from public to private, you'll see the message: "This account is private."
If the profile does not appear on a search, the person has either deactivated their account or blocked you.
Remember, though, that people can change their usernames on Instagram. So, there is a possibility that the person you are searching for has done this instead.
2. Search Through Your Profile
2 Images
If you are blocked, you can't comment on the person's post or send a direct message to them. However, your previous comments and conversations do not disappear. So, if you remember commenting on any of their posts or exchanging conversations via DM, open it up and go to their profile.
If you see their profile with no recent posts, you have likely been blocked. Since you can find out if someone has changed their username in this way, you'll certainly have been blocked if their changed name doesn't show up in the search bar.
3. Use the Instagram Unique Profile Link
Upon setting up your Instagram account, you're assigned a unique URL that includes your username.
Replacing the username in the profile link with the account handle of the person who you suspect has blocked you should take you to their account—if it exists.
If you open Instagram in your browser and search for their profile with a direct link, you'll either see their profile directly, or the message: "Sorry, this page isn't available."
To confirm if the account exists or not, log out of Instagram and search the same URL in a new tab. You'll see the same message if the account is deactivated. If you see their profile this time, however, they have blocked you.
When someone changes their username, the URL name automatically changes too. So, if they have changed their username recently, this method won't help you locate their profile.
4. Check From Another Instagram Account
You can check whether the account you believe has blocked you exists by checking from other Instagram accounts. You can share the username with a friend to see if it shows up in their search.
If it doesn't show up, then the account is deactivated or they have changed their username; if it shows up with the same username, you have been blocked.
5. Look Through Shared Instagram Group Chats
2 Images
If you're in a group chat with the other person, you can see if they've blocked you through that channel.
The other user will show up in the list of chat members. However, if you can't access their profile, they've blocked you.
6. Try to Follow the Same Account Again
If the person you're searching for shows up without any recent posts and photos, try following them again.
The other person will not have blocked you—or might have unblocked you—if you can follow them again straight away. Alternatively, you either mistakenly unfollowed the profile or were removed from their list of followers.
If the other person has blocked you, you'll see an error message and cannot follow them again.
7. Mention and Tag the Account
When people block you on Instagram, you cannot mention or tag them in your posts or comments. That's another way to find out if someone has blocked you. Nonetheless, making an account private has the same effect.
If you cannot tag or mention someone in a post on instagram, search for their username or profile instead. If you see a message that says, "This account is private," rest assured that you have not been blocked. If the account exists but you cannot see any posts, there is a good chance you have been blocked.
Now You Know How to Check if Someone Blocked You on Instagram
Instagram doesn't notify you when someone blocks you on Instagram, but you can use some simple methods to check. If you discover that you were blocked by someone you're close with, ask and see if they'll unblock you.
If your relationship with someone is tarnished, or they refuse to unblock you, it's important to respect their decision—whether you agree with it or not.
Lastly, when someone blocks you on Instagram, the person gets automatically blocked from your side as well. So, you don't need to retaliate and block them back.
How to understand that you are blocked on Instagram: 5 ways
At first glance, it will not work to understand that you are blocked on Instagram, but if you check the search and carefully look at the feed, you can find out exactly who added your account to the blacklist. In this guide, we will show you step by step what exactly needs to be done.
If your Instagram account has been blocked by another user, you will no longer be able to find their profile in the search. Thus, if you enter the appropriate name, you simply will not see it in the results. However, this situation can also arise if the wanted person simply deleted his account.
Step 1. Checking if the profile is active
To check if the profile of the person who supposedly blocked you still exists, try to find it through a browser (for example, from a computer) by logging out of your account. If the search was successful, and the account you are looking for is displayed in the results of Insta, then you have been blocked.
If the person who blocked you has an open profile, then you can go to his page offline and view his posts and comments. In the case of closed accounts, the situation is more complicated - in them you will not be able to see publications and subscribers, but only their number.
Step 2: Are publications visible?
The second step that will help you find out if you are blacklisted by an Instagram user is to check his feed. If images that were available to you until recently suddenly disappeared from his page, most likely, the person did not delete all publications, but simply stopped showing them to you - in other words, he blocked you. Stories will also disappear.
Step 3. Check the list of subscriptions
After blocking, the user's profile will not appear in your list of subscriptions and subscribers. It is very easy to check this - by searching in your own account. If the right person “unsubscribed”, and at the same time all other signs indicate that he threw you into a ban, most likely it is. Your account will also stop being subscribed to the blocker's profile.

Step 4.
Looking for direct messagesWhen you block someone on Instagram, the app doesn't hide the following from your direct message. But any new messages that you try to send will not reach the recipient and will not be marked as viewed. At the same time, the user with whom you are in an emergency will also not be able to use the chat with you.
Step 5. Trying to follow
If you are blocked, you will not be able to follow this person, even if you send him a request. In this case, the "Subscribe" button will be active. But pressing it will not work, even if the profile is open, and the user does not have to confirm applications for adding to subscriptions.
On the Internet, you can find many utilities and applications that supposedly can check if you have been blocked. We strongly advise against using them as they can access your account and registration information, spy on other data, and hack into your profile.

Six ways to understand that you have been blocked on Instagram
does not mean the account has been deleted. Perhaps he just blocked your page, and there are several ways to find out if you got banned. The Medialeaks editors figured out which of them work and which are absolutely useless.
You won't be able to find someone else's profile through the app's search
The easiest way to find out if you've been banned by an Instagram user is to try to find their profile through the app.
How to searchIf the nickname is written in the search bar without errors or you are sure that the person you are looking for has not changed it, but Instagram still refuses to show the account, then you are in the black list.
Search screenshotBrowser search returns no results
The second method is less obvious, but just as reliable as the first. In order for it to work, you need to log into your account not through the application, but through an Internet browser and search there. You just have to work a little - you need to write the nickname not in the search bar, but in the link: instagram. com/*username*.
If you are blocked, Instagram will write that the page is not available.
Page unavailableLog out of your account and try again in the browser
If you don't see any search results in your browser, it may mean that the user has deleted their profile. To be sure to check this information, log out of your account, and then repeat the manipulation of the link in the browser. The account will be displayed even if it is closed.
Profile screenshotCheck the comments under your posts
If you don't have a computer at hand, and it's inconvenient to access the browser on your phone, then there is a fourth method that definitely works - check your comments. If earlier a user who cannot be found now left you messages under posts, then you can easily check if his profile still exists.
Comment under the post from the blocked userThe fact is that Instagram does not delete or hide the user's comments when he blacklists you. And if the account is not deleted, then you can go to it.
The account of the blocked userDirect messages remain
There is a theory that if your profile is banned, then private messages with the blocked user will disappear. The editors of Medialeaks checked this assumption. However, it turned out to be a myth: the message remained in the direct of both users.
The message has not disappearedHowever, if you write a second message, the addressee will never see it, and the sender will not know about it.
Supposedly delivered messageSubscribe button appears for a second
Also, Guiding Tech reports that when visiting a blocked account, a subscribe button will appear, which will not work. This theory also turned out to be inoperative, because the opportunity arises only for a second, until the profile itself is loaded, and it is simply impossible to use it in time.
The button appeared for a secondThe easiest way, which does not require you to know the intricacies of how Instagram works, is to ask someone to check if the profile of the user who allegedly took you is active.
