How to search whatsapp chats

WhatsApp adds a search shortcut to yet another section of its app

It really wants to make it easy to find older messages using keywords

Most messengers have a built-in search button for finding specific messages within private and group conversations. WhatsApp is no different. The company has offered this feature for ages and even has an option to search for queries across all chats. The latest reports suggest that the Meta-owned messenger is now adding its search button to yet another place within the app for an even better experience.

The new search message shortcut was spotted on WhatsApp beta version 2.22.6.3 by the folks at WABetaInfo. According to them, users will be able to make searches straight from the info page of personal contacts and group chats. Currently, the feature is only rolling out for some testers. But even for those that get it, the report notes that the search button fails to appear sometimes. That shouldn’t come as a surprise since it’s a beta after all. That said, there’s no information on when the new search shortcut will arrive on the stable channel, but it hopefully shouldn’t be too long.

Right now, you can already search messages in an individual chat by tapping the three-dot menu in the top right corner and hitting Search. It's also possible to make a global search for keywords within all of your conversations using the magnifier icon in the top right when in the Chats list.

WhatsApp has been working on a host of features to enhance the user experience. The messenger recently improved the archaic, unrefined method for sharing uncompressed media files by introducing proper previews when images and videos are shared as documents. Earlier this month, the app got a long-overdue revamped voice call interface with a rounded gray rectangular background showing your contact's name, number, and profile picture, as well as the call duration on top.

We’ve also been expecting WhatsApp to get message reactions, ever since we saw previews of how they would look on smartphones — we now even have an idea of how they would be implemented on WhatsApp Web and the desktop app. Once it arrives, users will be able to react to messages using only about six emoji, compared to other Meta-owned apps like Instagram and Facebook that allow reacting with any emoji of choice.

Many of these additions are still in development, but it's only a matter of time before users can fully start taking advantage of them.

WhatsApp group chats are not only correspondence with two or three friends at once, but also an opportunity to make new ones by joining a large dialogue of interests. How to find a group on WhatsApp? And how can you join? The functionality of the messenger allows you to do this in several ways - consider them all.

How to find a WhatsApp group

The easiest way to find a group to chat on WhatsApp is through word of mouth. If you know that one of your friends or acquaintances is chatting in a general chat, you can ask them to transfer the administrator's contacts to you. Save the number and text him on whatsapp. Ask to be added to the group conversation. If the admin does not have any good reasons to refuse you, then most likely he will quickly fulfill your request.

This is most often done when looking for groups, such as classmates or colleagues - people often organize general chats to communicate on educational or work topics.

Large open groups on WhatsApp tend to form around the interests of the interlocutors. Most of the participants in this conversation do not know each other. People create chat rooms to meet and chat about their hobbies, professional interests, or just for the sake of pleasant chatting about anything with strangers. To find the right group for you, you need to know in advance what kind of topics you would like to follow in the conversation.

The WhatsApp application itself does not provide a search function for already created groups. Therefore, special sites were created where chat administrators can advertise their chat by inviting new people to it. Admins post their phone number so that users can request access to the group, or a link to join. Below you can see the current selection of such sites:

  • whatsism. There are a huge number of group chats on any subject. Chats are divided into groups: dating, communication, cities, music. .. Choose a category and look for a chat that you like. Each group is provided with a description, where you can read a rough description of the conversation from its administrator. All participants have the opportunity to rate the group on the site. You can look at the number of "likes" and "dislikes" and choose the best option for yourself. Another plus of the site is the ability to comment on groups. True, few people use it, and therefore there are not very many comments on most of the dialogues;
This site is the most convenient to use - all dialogs are categorized, and the search is simple and intuitive

addgroups. This resource contains groups both in WhatsApp, and in Telegram and Viber. As on the previous site, the groups are divided by subject. There is also a general search - enter a keyword and try to find a suitable dialogue. Administrators post their phone numbers and a brief description of the groups. Dialogues here have a rating from one to five stars - it is determined by chat users;

Each group here must specify a binding to the region - or confirm its absence

topmsg. Here are collected not such populated groups as on the previous two sites. Instead of the administrator's phone number, this resource immediately posted a link to gain access - open it from your smartphone, and you will automatically join the group.

The administrator's phone number is not shown here, but by clicking on the link, you will immediately get access to the group

chat window.

The search box is at the very top of the chat tab - you need to move it down

How to join a WhatsApp group

There are two ways to join a group: by admin invitation or by link.

By invitation

If you have an administrator in your contact list, you can write to him and ask him to add him to the group. As soon as he adds you, the group will automatically appear in your chat list. No confirmation is required from you.

If a person bothers you with constant invitations to groups, just remove him from your contact list. In this case, he will not be able to invite you.

Link access

The group administrator can create a link by clicking on which the person will automatically join the group. The admin can place the link on the site (like those described above) or send it to a potential interlocutor as an invitation.

To join the group, you just need to open the link from the device on which you are logged into your WhatsApp account (this can be either a smartphone or a PC). Within a couple of seconds, the invitation will be checked - and the new group will appear in your chat list.

Links are most common in public dating chats, but almost never in private groups (such as a group of close friends or classmates). The fact is that when the administrator sends a link, the invitee can use it and send it to any other person - it will also work. To stop unwanted prompts, the administrator must manually disable access through this link.

If you clicked on the link, but an error appeared (“You cannot join this group because the invitation was revoked”), this means that the administrator has closed access to the link you found. Perhaps he has already closed the group or simply does not want to invite new members to it. If you have his phone number, try texting him personally and asking him to join a group chat.

This error often occurs when trying to look for small groups for informal communication - they often fade away by themselves, and admins close links. Moreover, he will not appear there even if you enter his group dialogue.

How to leave a WhatsApp group

Leaving a WhatsApp group is easy:

  1. Open a group dialog.
  2. Tap the group name (iOS, Windows, and Mac) or More (Android).
  3. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click Leave Group.
If you find the content of a group inappropriate, you can also report it

WhatsApp groups are easy to manage and use. Search for interlocutors of interest, enter into various dialogues and freely leave them when you see fit - all this functionality is available both on the smartphone application and on the PC client.
