WhatsApp: How to Find a Specific Message

Posted on by Judy Sanhz 3 Comments

If you use WhatsApp a lot, a specific message can quickly get lost in the sea of messages. Finding a message by simply swiping can take forever, especially if you can’t remember the date you sent or received the message. The good news is that WhatsApp has two ways you can look for any message regardless of how long ago it was sent or received.

There’s no need to try and remember when the message was sent or received, but you’ll need to remember at least a few words of the message. By trying to remember the keywords of the conversations should be enough to find your message.

How to Locate Any Message in WhatsApp

WhatsApp has you covered whether you remember what chat the message you need is in or not. If you can’t remember what chat the message is in, as soon as you open WhatsApp, tap on the search option at the top. Start typing the words you remember from the conversation, and WhatsApp will show you what is was able to find.

When you think you’ve found the right message, tap on the chat. WhatsApp will open that contact, and you can re-read your message. When you have that contact open, the words you typed in the search bar will be highlighted for an easy find. If you made a mistake and that wasn’t the conversation you were looking for, you’ll need to repeat the process.

When You Remember the Chat

When you know what chat the message you’re looking for, the steps will be slightly different. In that case, open the WhatsApp chat and tap on the three dots at the top right. When the window with options appears, tap on the search option.

After tapping on the search option, the search bar will appear on top, ready for you to type something. Type the words you remember from the message and tap the search icon. WhatsApp will highlight any compatible messages. The same rules apply if you’re searching for a message in a group. That’s good news since there are fewer steps you have to learn to find your messages.

How to See Deleted WhatsApp Messages

What if the message you want to see has been deleted by your contact? Not all hope is lost, at least for the next messages. An app that can help you recover deleted content is WAMR. The app can even help you recover messages or media content you’ve deleted yourself. Who hasn’t erased something to later regret it, right?

Something you’ll also like about the app is that it also allows you to see certain status’ without letting the person who put it up know. You may not find every single status, but it’ll show you quite a few.

There are some limitations to the app that you should be aware of. For example, it’ll state that if you’ve silenced a chat and a message in that chat has been deleted, the app won’t be able to recover it. Also, battery optimizations apps will also prevent the app from saving the deleted messages. So, it’s recommended that you remove the app from any battery optimization services.

Final Thoughts

There’s always a reason to look for a message. Maybe someone gave you their address or wrote something nice you want to read again. Whatever the reason is to find that message, you have two ways of looking for those messages. Did you find the message you were looking for? Let me know in the comments below.

Search messages in WhatsApp by word and date

Messengers are convenient because they carefully save all correspondence. If there is such a need, you can find, reread and forward any message. To search, you need to know the keyword that is mentioned in the desired message. In the future, it will be possible to search for messages not only by words, but also by dates. The chat stores additional materials - media, links and text documents. For additional reliability, you can connect a backup. The copied texts will be stored on your computer without taking up extra space on your phone. 9Ol000 In order not to search for a message manually, a search form is provided. It works differently on Android and iPhone, but is always quite simple. The main way to search is by keyword. The word search system works only with text messages, but does not affect media files, voice messages, videos. Whatsapp message search by date is under development. It will work with all data for the selected day. You can search in a chat with a specific interlocutor or in all chats.

By word

Finding a message by word in whatsapp is a useful feature. It is often used, therefore it is placed in a separate search bar. On Android, it opens as follows:

  1. Open the "Chats" tab.
  2. Click on the magnifying glass icon. A search form will appear.
  3. Enter the desired word or phrase in the form.

iPhone does not have a magnifying glass symbol, you need to swipe down the screen for the search form to appear. If the program is installed on a laptop, you need to search for messages in WhatsApp by the word in the same way as on Android.

This function is needed in cases where the user remembers exactly what he was talking about with the interlocutor, but it takes too long to scroll through all the correspondence. If you search manually, there is a risk of missing the desired message, so it's better to trust the program. An important clarification is that the search system compares the spelling in the message text and in the form. If an error or typo has crept in somewhere, the program may not find the specified conversation.

By date

You need to find a message by date when the topic of the conversation is not important or unknown, but you need to check what and to whom was written on a certain day. This function is more reliable than search by word, it saves well in cases where there was a typo in the message, but the author cannot remember which one, and write the word in the search form in the same way.

A full date search is being tested and is not yet available to users. It is supposed that a pictogram with a calendar will be made for it. When you click on it, you can select the desired date, and the program will show all messages for this time.

But something is already working. Old messages sent last year can be found on a PC or laptop. To use this feature, you need to have a computer version of the messenger and backup copies of messages. Action sequence:

  1. Open the backup file in the computer version.
  2. Open search bar (ctrl+O).
  3. Enter the date in it.

The search will not work without the PC version.

Is it possible to find a message in the archive

While the chat is active, all messages in it can be found by normal search. But if the conversation gets into the archive, then it is excluded from the search menu. This means that it is impossible to find the message in the archive. It is also impossible to read the chat. But that doesn't mean that nothing can be done.

To make the chat active, it must be unzipped. Procedure:

  1. Open search (magnifying glass icon or scroll down).
  2. Dial the name of the chat or contact.
  3. Check "Archive" or "From archive".

The chat will be unarchived and you will be able to find your favorite messages. This is done in the same way as when searching in a regular chat. You can use the word search form, find last year's posts if a backup was made, or search manually. After the desired message is found, copied and read, the chat can be archived again.

Searching for voice messages and media files

The search form does not allow you to find audio and media, so you will have to make an effort to find voice messages. They are stored in the phone's memory, and you need to look for them in the internal sections:

  1. "Files" application.
  2. View tab.
  3. Internal memory section.
  4. Whatsapp folder.
  5. Media folder.

It stores all the voice files that have been sent and received.

Finding a photo or video is much easier. They are stored in the contact information section. You need to go to the selected chat, click on the name of the interlocutor, and a menu of information about the user will appear. It will have a Media, Links and Documents tab. This link contains all the files sent in the selected chat.

How to find unread messages

Unread messages are always displayed as a separate symbol (the number next to the application icon). When the dialogue is open, a mark appears next to new messages - a green circle. You don’t need to specifically look for them - the program itself will remind you of their existence.

If you need to view the text, but to make the message unread (to make it easier to find or when the interlocutor does not need to know that the message has been read), there is a set of tricks. The text will automatically appear on the notification panel, short messages are visible in their entirety, long messages are only partially visible.

To safely read the message without sending a report to the sender, a privacy setting is provided (Settings - "Account" - "Privacy" - "Do not send a read report"). An additional option is to hide your presence on the network. This way it will be possible to avoid the situation that the recipient was online, but did not read the message.

For iPhone, an option is provided - mark "unread". So the message will become visible in the general chat. Applications help hide presence, read messages without a read receipt, and mark as read or unread at will.

You can find the desired message on SMS in WhatsApp with any amount of accumulated data. The system does not provide the ability to hide the text from the second interlocutor in the chat, you can not read other people's messages. Otherwise, all records that ended up in the messenger are available and transparent to all interested parties.

A messenger user, when sending you a message, knows whether you have read it or not, thanks to the blue checkmarks. You can hide them, and as a result, the checkmarks will always remain gray.
