Whether you’re about to move to a new device or just worried about losing your conversations, there are many reasons why you should backup your data. Helpfully, some apps — including WhatsApp — have ways to backup your data automatically. In this article, we’ll show you how to backup WhatsApp messages and attachments on your phone.
Key Takeaways:
- You can backup WhatsApp messages from within the app.
- By default, Android devices use Google Drive and iOS devices use iCloud for the backup.
- There are other services that can store the backup you create.
- You can recover your WhatsApp chats during the installation process.
Although you can create a local backup on your phone, you can’t easily use it to move conversations to a new device and it won’t protect anything from most cybercrime or physical damage. Instead, you should keep a copy in the cloud. Luckily, it only takes a few taps to save all your WhatsApp data to either Google Drive or iCloud.
The easiest way to backup WhatsApp is with the built-in feature that lets you save your chats to either iCloud or Google Drive — on iOS or Android, respectively. Simply go into “settings,” “chats” then “chat backup.” Here, there will be a backup button and an auto-backup feature that you can set up.
When you install WhatsApp on your phone, it will ask you if it should restore chat histories. Make sure that your backup is on your device or your connected cloud storage — either Google Drive or iCloud — before downloading it, and then choose that option when it appears.
Simply follow the method to backup your WhatsApp data either locally or to the cloud, and then you can download that data file to your new device. However, if you’ve connected your phone to your iCloud or Google account, you should be able to restore your data without downloading it first.
How to Backup WhatsApp on iPhone
For most Apple device users, you’ll want to backup your WhatsApp chats to your iCloud storage — and you can read more on this service in our full iCloud review. You could backup everything on your iPhone, but the best way to backup just WhatsApp is to use the backup feature that’s built into the app, which is a simple four-step process.
- Tap “Settings”
When you open WhatsApp from your home screen, you’ll notice five buttons along the bottom. Select the option on the far right, labeled “settings.”
In WhatsApp, tap the “settings” icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Select “Chat Backup”
Choose “chat backup” from the “chats” page.
Go into your chat backup settings.
- Tap “Back Up Now”
You can either tap “back up now” to start the backup process or select “auto backup” and change your backup frequency.
Tap “back up now” to start creating a backup.
How to Backup WhatsApp on Android
Although the process is similar, WhatsApp puts its buttons in slightly different places on Android devices. It’ll also save everything to your Google Drive account. Note that with this service, you give up some privacy and security in return for high speeds and a great third-party integration — and you can find out more in our full Google Drive review.
- Tap “Settings”
Choose “settings” from the dropdown list.

- Go Into “Chats”
In WhatsApp’s settings, tap “chats” to get access to your conversation settings.

Store Your WhatsApp Backup in the Cloud
With neither iCloud nor Google Drive being among the best cloud storage services for security, you may be worried about the privacy of your conversations. Luckily, you can use a more secure service by saving your backup files to your preferred remote storage app.
1. Sync.com
Sync.com’s incredible mobile app makes it one of the best.
At this point, it’s no surprise that Sync.com is our favorite cloud storage provider. Although our full Sync.com review goes into more detail, when it comes down to it, 2TB of space with high-end security for both PC and mobile devices at only $8.00 per month is practically unbeatable, plus you can get 5GB of cloud storage for free.
2. pCloud
pCloud is a solid option, especially for high-speed transfers.
Despite pCloud’s odd choice to make zero-knowledge encryption a paid add-on, pCloud and Sync.com are closely matched. If you’re looking for ease of use and speed, and you’re willing to pay extra for security, check out our full pCloud review. You can get started with 10GB of free cloud storage.
3. Icedrive
Icedrive is a young service, but it’s still one of the best.
Although it is newer to the cloud storage scene, Icedrive ties with Sync.com in our comparison. It doesn’t lack much in any category, including providing 10GB of free space — even if its customer support could be improved — and it’ll definitely keep your data safe. So if you’re willing to go for a younger service, read our full Icedrive review for more information.

Final Thoughts: How to Backup WhatsApp
Whether you’re an iOS or an Android user, there’s no reason you can’t backup your WhatsApp chats and conversations. You can then use this backup to quickly recover all of your messages, as well as any photos, videos and other attachments that have been part of a conversation.
If you have saved your WhatsApp data to the cloud but can’t see it in there, be sure to look in your backup folder. Providers often keep this separate, so people don’t damage their backups by accident, but you can usually still access it through the official web page on your computer.
However, if you don’t need to use this recovery feature and are limited in space, you can instead use the “export chat” option under “chat history.” This’ll create a text file of the conversation you had with one person. You can even ignore photos and videos, so it doesn’t take up too much memory.
Keep in mind that to accomplish the backup you’ll need a reliable VPN to bypass the WhatsApp ban in Dubai and other countries where WhatsApp is banned. We also have a guide on how to unblock WhatsApp in China.

How to Export WhatsApp Chats to PC via PDF or Email [2022]
While WhatsApp lets us save our entire app data to Google Drive or iCloud, it doesn’t let us export dedicated conversations easily. Though, if you want, you can export a WhatsApp chat to PDF or email and save it on your computer. The process to export a chat in WhatsApp is pretty simple and would not need any extra effort. In this post, I will let you know how to export WhatsApp chats on iPhone or Android like a pro with some other tips.
Part 1: How to Export WhatsApp Chats to PDF on PC?
One of the best things about WhatsApp is that you can export individual chats to a text file if you want to. As of now, the feature to export chats in WhatsApp only lets us save messages and not the shared attachments. Once you have exported your chats as a text file, you can transfer it to your computer, and save it in PDF format. If you think the process to export WhatsApp chats to PDF sounds complicated, then follow these steps:
Step 1: Export chats in a TXT format
At first, you can just launch WhatsApp on your device and go to the conversation that you wish to export. Now, tap on the three-dot icon from the top to select the “Export Chat” option on WhatsApp. In the newer versions, it would be listed under More > Export Chat instead.
This will provide different options to export the chats as a TXT file. You can select a preferred mode to save the TXT file on the device or can just upload it to Google Drive to easily share it.
Step 2: Export WhatsApp chats to PDF
Once you have shared the exported chats to Google Drive, you can access it on your PC and download the document. Now, simply open the WhatsApp chat on MS Word to view the conversation. Finally, go to its Main Menu > File > Save As and choose to save the document as a “PDF” file under the “Save as type” field.
That’s it! This will let you export all chats from WhatsApp to your PC in a PDF format.
Part 2: How to Export WhatsApp Chats via Email on any Device?
This is another convenient way to export chats in WhatsApp that can be done on both Android and iOS devices. The process to export WhatsApp chats is pretty similar on iOS and Android, but the overall interface would vary. As you would export chats from WhatsApp via an email, the app will give you an option to include or exclude videos. Ideally, it is recommended to exclude videos since most of the email clients have a maximum capacity of only 20 MB per mail.
Method 1: Export WhatsApp Chats on iPhone
Firstly, you can just launch WhatsApp on your iOS device, select a chat, and swipe it to visit More Options > Export Chat. Alternatively, you can also open the conversation, tap on the more options from here, and choose the “Export Chat” feature.
Now, WhatsApp will give you options to include or exclude videos in the zipped WhatsApp chat file. Later, you can select “Mail” as an option to export chats from WhatsApp. This will launch the Mail app on iPhone with the attached WhatsApp chats that you can send to anyone (or yourself).
Method 2: Export WhatsApp Chats on Android
The process to export chats from WhatsApp on Android is pretty similar as well. Once you have opened the WhatsApp conversation, tap on the three-dot icon from the top, and select More > Export Chat feature.
Furthermore, you can choose to email the WhatsApp chat and select a preferred email server from the list. You can log-in to your email account from here and its window would automatically be opened with the attached document that you can later send to your email id.

How to save all files from WhatsApp and transfer chats to Telegram
WhatsApp users began to actively prepare to leave the messenger. It is known that so far no restrictions are planned for the application, however, experts believe that it will not hurt to be ready in advance. About how to save all information from WhatsApp, transfer it to Telegram, to another smartphone or PC - in the material of Gazeta.Ru.
Better early
In connection with the blocking of the Instagram photo service in Russia, users of the WhatsApp messenger should, just in case, pay attention to ways to back up all data from the application. The reason is that WhatsApp and Instagram are owned by the same company, Meta (formerly Facebook).
It is now known that no restrictive actions are planned for the messenger.
Nevertheless, more and more users are interested in how to switch to other services, with the help of which you can quickly send and receive messages, but at the same time not lose years of correspondence both with friends and relatives, and on work or business issues.
Any messenger has a backup function that allows you to protect data and restore it in case of unforeseen events, Ivan Samoylenko, managing partner of B&C Agency, told Gazeta.Ru.
“Of course, users can take many screenshots of conversations or copy contacts to a text file, but people tend to have dozens of chats. This will take a significant amount of time,” the expert added.
According to the analyst, there are three ways that are much more effective than such practices.
The first way - third-party programs
Transferring backups using third-party programs is possible on smartphones with both iOS and Android, Samoylenko explained. Typically, such programs are used if you need to move WhatsApp data between smartphones with different mobile operating systems. However, for the purpose of creating a backup, they are also suitable.
Among the most frequently used programs are MobileTrans, WutsApper, WhatsApp Transfer and others.
The method of copying them may differ, but, as a rule, you need to connect both devices to the system: a gadget with data and a smartphone that will store the copy.
Such programs are also capable of more complex actions. For example, MobileTrans allows you to transfer all data, including photos and videos. The program has the functions of backing up WhatsApp to a computer and restoring a copy from a PC to a smartphone.
The second way is to Telegram
Users whose version of the messenger has been updated to a version higher than 7.4 will be able to copy WhatsApp chats (including group ones) to Telegram.
You need to launch WhatsApp on the device, select a chat, swipe it from right to left and click the "More" button, Samoylenko said. In the menu that appears, select "Export chat". Here you need to specify whether media files will be transferred - audio, photo and video recordings.
“Next, we indicate with which programs we want to share the correspondence. In our case, with Telegram. In this application, you can create a separate group in advance for your own correspondence, or save chats in "Favorites," the analyst noted.
The last step is to select the desired chat and click the "Import" button. According to the expert, you should not save personal correspondence in group chats, as they will be available to all their participants. When the data transfer is complete, "Imported" will appear.
The third way is in Google Drive
A Google Drive cloud backup can help if multiple users need access and the account is registered for doing business.
According to Samoilenko, for this method you need to log in to your Google account and be connected to the Internet.
“Next, open WhatsApp, the tab “Other options”, and in it “Settings”. In the “Chats” item, select “Backup Chats”, and then “Backup to Google Drive,” the expert said.
After that, you must also specify how often the data will be automatically transferred and stored in your Google account. For example, once a day at night (usually at two in the morning, when the owner is no longer using the app).
“This will allow you to have an up-to-date copy of correspondence every day and not save them manually every day. These backups can then be used to restore on a new device,” added Samoylenko. He clarified that it is also possible to store photos and videos in cloud services separately from correspondence.
According to the expert, the backup can also be transferred from Google Drive to a computer's hard drive, to another cloud service, or to a flash drive. The more backups a user has, the more chances to save data, the analyst concluded.

How to transfer WhatsApp messages to a new smartphone
You can transfer your WhatsApp chat history to a new Android smartphone to continue chatting with your friends without losing your old messages. We will show three ways to help you do this.
When you change your smartphone, it becomes necessary to transfer WhatsApp data from one gadget to another. This feature is provided in the messenger itself, and there are several ways to do it. Let's talk about everything in order.
We use special software
There are several specialized services for complete transfer of information. We liked iCareFone for Whatsapp transfer from the developer Tenorshare: it allows you to carry out, among other things, a cross-platform transfer (for example, from Android to iPhone). To do this, you need a laptop or computer and, in fact, two smartphones.
1. Connect both gadgets to the computer and click the "Transfer" button.
2. The program will back up the data. Then you will need to click "Continue".
3. To verify that the WhatsApp account belongs to you, you will need to enter the phone number to which it is linked.
4. If the number is entered correctly, data copying will start. The process usually takes several minutes. After the end, you will see something like this window.
As you can see, nothing complicated.
Backing up to Google Drive
Backing up WhatsApp chatsBefore transferring chats to your new smartphone, you must manually back them up on your old phone. To do this, proceed as follows.
- Open WhatsApp and select "Settings" in the upper right corner of the menu.
- In the category "Chats" you will find the item "Backup of chats".
- Click the "Save" button to save the current chat history.
- To create a manual backup, click the green "Backup" button. To automatically create a backup, open the Backup to Google Drive section and select the interval that suits you.
- If you had a backup copy of chats created using this method, then when you install it on a new smartphone, WhatsApp will automatically download all available messages.
Copying a local backup from the storage
The local backup of chats on an Android smartphone is located in the WhatsApp / Databases folder. It can be in local memory or on an SD card. The backup is named "msgstore.db.crypt".
If you connect your phone to a PC with a USB cable, you can copy this file to your computer and then transfer it to your new phone. Accessing this file is even easier with a file manager like ES File Explorer. With it, you can immediately send a file to a new phone via email, Bluetooth or cloud storage.
To download old chats, copy the "msgstore.db.crypt" file to the WhatsApp / Databases folder on the new smartphone, and start WhatsApp. A backup copy of the messages will be downloaded automatically.
