  • FAQ: How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Database Files?

Keep in mind that WhatsApp does not keep your chats on the server, so it is impossible to contact the company to recover the missing files. There are mainly three methods to recover deleted WhatsApp videos from Android phones mentioned below. Apply one as needed.

Method 1. Recover Deleted Files from WhatsApp on Android via Database Files

By default on Android, WhatsApp saves all the files you send and receive in a specific folder. Therefore, you can delete a file from a chat and keep it on your phone in this folder.

Download a free file for Android Explorer, for example Google Files, then navigate to the following folder: Internal Storage> WhatsApp> Media> WhatsApp (Videos/Audios/texts). Here you will see all the files you received in WhatsApp.

Take a look and see if your missing WhatsApp files are inside. If you're looking for a media type other than photos, you'll also see WhatsApp Video and other folders here - be sure to check them out.

Unfortunately, this step is not an option for iPhone users. This is because Android lets you browse much of the device's local folder hierarchy, while the iOS Files app is limited to a few cloud folders.

Restore from a local backup

If you want to use a local backup, you'll need to transfer the files to the phone using a computer, file explorer or SD Card.

Note:

  • Your phone will store up to the last seven days worth of local backup files.
  • Local backups will be automatically created every day at 2:00 AM and saved as a file in your phone.
  • If your data isn't stored in the sd card/WhatsApp/ folder, you might see "internal storage" or "main storage" folders.

Restore a less recent local backup

If you want to restore a local backup that isn't the most recent one, you'll need to do the following:

    • Download a file manager app.
    • In the file manager app, navigate to sd card/WhatsApp/Databases. If your data isn't stored on the SD card, you might see "internal storage" or "main storage" instead of sd card
    • Rename the backup file you want to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12. It's possible that an earlier backup might be on an earlier protocol, such as crypt9 or crypt10. Don't change the number of the crypt extension.
    • Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
    • Tap RESTORE when prompted.
    • Method 2: Retrieve Deleted Files from WhatsApp on Android via Google Drive Backup

If you have created a backup of those files, then it will be easy to retrieve deleted WhatsApp files. Here are the steps to recover delete files from Google Drive Backup:

    1. Uninstall the WhatsApp application and then reinstall.
    2. Set up your Android device with the account for a deleted file.
    3. You will be prompted to restore all the files after the setup. Click the Restore option. This will restore all your files from Google Drive, including the files that you accidentally deleted.

How to Recover Deleted or Missing WhatsApp Messages

Do you need to recover deleted or missing WhatsApp messages? It's certainly possible, depending on the situation.

Below, you'll learn how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages on your iPhone or Android device. We'll then teach you how to set up an advanced WhatsApp backup plan to ensure you never lose any of your WhatsApp messages again.

Understanding WhatsApp Chat Backups

In order to retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages, you must have enabled Chat Backup in the app's settings. To reach this, tap the Settings tab. It's on the bottom bar of the iPhone app; on Android, open the three-dot menu at the top-right and choose Settings.

From there, head to Chats > Chat backup. Here (under Auto Backup on iOS and Back up to Google Drive on Android), the app offers several backup frequencies (along with the option to encrypt your WhatsApp backups):

  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Off

2 Images

On Android, WhatsApp makes a local backup every night, but this won't help you if you lose your phone. This is why cloud backups are vital.

WhatsApp deletes older backup files as you create new ones. The iPhone app only keeps the latest backup file, while the Android version keeps "up to the last seven days' worth" of backup files. Keep that in mind as you choose the right backup frequency for your needs.

By having daily auto-backups, you'll be able to easily recover WhatsApp messages soon after deleting them. On the other hand, weekly auto-backups will allow you to go further back in time to recover deleted WhatsApp messages, at the expense of losing recent chat messages.

For a more advanced backup plan for Android devices, scroll down to the "An Advanced WhatsApp Backup Strategy for Android" section below.

How to Recover Archived Chats in WhatsApp

Before we look at recovering deleted WhatsApp messages, there's a chance that you might have just archived a missing chat, not deleted it. But what's the difference?

Archiving removes the chat from your list, allowing you to hide conversations that you're done with for now. You can unarchive a chat at any time to access it again, and archiving doesn't delete anything in the chat. Conversely, deleting a chat erases its contents, so they're no longer accessible to you.

On iPhone, when you archive a chat, you can immediately reverse the archival by shaking your device and choosing Undo to recover the archived chat. But even if you miss this, it's easy to retrieve archived WhatsApp chats later.

To unarchive a WhatsApp chat on iPhone:

  1. Scroll up in the chat list (swipe from top to bottom) until Archived Chats appears.
  2. Tap on it, then swipe from right to left on the chat you want to restore.
  3. Hit the Unarchive button that appears.

2 Images

To unarchive a chat on Android:

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the chat list and tap Archived chats (X).
  2. Press and hold on the chat you want to recover.
  3. Tap the unarchive icon at the top-right, which looks like a box with an upward-facing arrow.

How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Messages

Wondering how to get back deleted WhatsApp messages after backing them up? You can restore your WhatsApp backup by simply uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp on your device.

When you reinstall the app, you will be prompted to restore your message history from the backup file. Tap Restore and you'll retrieve everything from the latest backup. Make sure to do it when prompted, as you can't restore the backup file later.

This method of recovering deleted WhatsApp messages works on both Android and iPhone, as long as you have a backup. Keep in mind that you can only recover backed-up messages within your selected auto-backup frequency, however.

For instance, if you've set the app to back up daily, you can recover any deleted chats before the next daily backup occurs. But if the app has made a new backup since you deleted certain messages, they're lost for good.

How to Recover Deleted Media on WhatsApp

Hopefully, restoring your backup file allowed you to retrieve any deleted media from your chats. If that didn't work, however, read our guide to recovering deleted photos from WhatsApp.

On Android, you can simply open a file explorer app and navigate to /WhatsApp/Media. From there, simply sift through the folders until you find the deleted photos you want to recover.

On iPhone, you should have a backup copy of images saved to your device if you have the Save to Camera Roll option enabled at Settings > Chats in WhatsApp.

Check the above guide for additional methods of media recovery.

How to Recover Older Deleted Chats in WhatsApp

Getting deleted messages back after a new WhatsApp backup has run is slightly more difficult. Your success will depend on your selected auto-backup frequency.

Note that the below strategy only works on Android devices, since the OS lets you access local backup files. If you're using an iPhone, your only other method is to restore an iPhone backup that you made before deleting the WhatsApp chats. There are third-party apps that claim to help you recover WhatsApp chats, but they aren't cheap and offer no guarantees. Whether you use these is up to how much you value the missing messages.

Before we dive into the process, here's an overview of restoring older WhatsApp chats on Android:

  1. Open a file explorer app on your Android device.
  2. Navigate to /WhatsApp/Databases.
  3. Rename msgstore.db.crypt12 to msgstore-latest.db.crypt12.
  4. Rename msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12.
  5. Uninstall WhatsApp.
  6. If Google Drive backups are enabled, open Google Drive, slide out the left menu, tap Backups, and delete the WhatsApp backup file.
  7. Reinstall WhatsApp.
  8. When prompted, restore from the backup file.

How to Restore Older Deleted WhatsApp Chats on Android

As mentioned before, WhatsApp on Android retains several days of chat backup files. One is, of course, the latest chat backup. The others, depending on your auto-backup frequency, could be one day or many days old. In addition to the Google Drive cloud backup, WhatsApp stores these backups on your device's local storage.

Open your device's file explorer app (Files by Google is a good option if you don't have one installed), and navigate to /WhatsApp/Databases. Depending on your device, the WhatsApp folder may appear under /sdcard/, /storage/, Internal Memory, or similar.

Within that WhatsApp folder, you'll find the various chat backup files. The latest one is named msgstore.db.crypt12, while the others look like msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD. 1.db.crypt12. As you'd expect, YYYY-MM-DD represents the year, month, and date (respectively) that the backup file was created.

To retrieve WhatsApp messages deleted sometime between two backups, simply do the following:

  1. Rename msgstore.db.crypt12 to msgstore-latest.db.crypt12. This changes the latest backup file, since you're about to give an older backup its name in order to restore it.
  2. Next, rename the msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 file that you want to restore to msgstore.db.crypt12.

3 Images

After this, uninstall WhatsApp. If you've enabled Google Drive cloud backups, open the Google Drive app, slide out the left menu, and select Backups. You'll see a WhatsApp backup file with your phone number in it. Tap the three-dot Menu to the right of this and choose Delete backup to erase it.

Doing this prevents WhatsApp from using the backup file in Google Drive instead of the local file you want to restore.

3 Images

Now, reinstall WhatsApp from the Play Store. During the setup process, you'll be prompted to restore from the backup file you've just tweaked—it will show as X days old instead of the most recent backup file. Confirm restoration from this file.

That's all you have to do in order to retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages from older backups. Once you've restored those messages, feel free to start using WhatsApp as normal again.

How to Export Retrieved WhatsApp Messages and Return to the Latest Backup

When you walk through the above, you'll lose any messages created since the backup you restored. If you only performed that process to restore a few deleted messages, and don't want to lose recent messages, you can export the retrieved chat messages and then restore WhatsApp to the latest backup. You'll have to run through the entire process again, but it's not difficult.

To export messages, open the chat containing the messages you want to save. Tap the three-dot Menu button at the top-right, followed by More > Export chat. If the chat has media, you'll see an option to export Without media or to Include media.

Including media will add all recent images as attachments, which obviously increases the size of the export file. You can export up to 10,000 messages with media, or 40,000 messages without media.

After you make your choice, choose an app on your phone to share the text file (and attachments, if applicable) containing your messages. You can email this to yourself, add it to cloud storage, or similar. Repeat this for any other chats with messages you want to save.

3 Images

Once you're done exporting, follow the steps in the above section again to access your WhatsApp backups. When you come to renaming the backup files, reverse the process:

  1. Rename the existing msgstore.db.crypt12 (which contains the messages you retrieved) to msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12, using today's date. In case there's already a file with today's date, use DD.2 instead.
  2. Next, rename msgstore-latest.db.crypt12 (the latest backup created when you started) back to msgstore.db.crypt12.

Uninstall WhatsApp, delete your Google Drive backup again if needed, and reinstall the app. After you restore from backup, your latest chats will reappear. The messages you exported won't appear inside WhatsApp, but you can at least see them in the text file whenever you need them.

An Advanced WhatsApp Backup Strategy for Android

Because you can easily view and edit WhatsApp chat backup files on Android, it's easy to manipulate them. Renaming them allows you to keep as many backup files as you want.

All you need to do is rename a backup in the msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 format to something else, such as oct11.db.crypt12 or 2021-June-Backup. Because this file doesn't use WhatsApp's naming convention, it's now protected from WhatsApp overwriting it.

Consider creating your own backup file in this way once every month or so. That way, you won't lose tons of messages if you have to restore from an older backup. For even more safety, you should copy these backup files to cloud storage or your computer so that they're safe in case your phone stops working or you lose it.

Recover WhatsApp Messages to Preserve Memories

As you can see, it's fairly easy to recover deleted WhatsApp messages. However, this is only the case if you've backed up your messages ahead of time. This is why the advanced backup strategy is worth setting up if you're an Android user. iPhone owners don't have as many options.

Now that you know you won't lose any WhatsApp messages in the future, it's a good idea to discover some of WhatsApp's other cool features that aren't immediately visible.

Updated: 01/09/2022, author - Ilya

Ilya is the editor-in-chief of the site softdroid. net. He is the author of several hundred guides and articles on Android setup. For about 15 years he has been repairing equipment and solving technical problems for iOS and Android. I dealt with almost all more or less popular brands of mobile smartphones and tablets Samsung, HTC, Xiaomi, etc. I use iPhone 12 and Samsung Galaxy S21 with the latest firmware version for testing.

Information about the author

Whatsapp photos are stored not only in correspondence. A file that you accidentally deleted from one location is likely to be found elsewhere: in a chat, backup, device file storage. If the search was unsuccessful, try to restore the image using recovery programs for Android and Windows.

Contents of :

    Which folder contains Whatsapp photos

All photos sent from the device or sent (received) via WhatsApp are automatically saved. Where are Whatsapp photos placed? On Android devices, you will find messenger media in a folder called WhatsApp in the internal memory.

    How to find "lost" photos:

    1. Open File Manager + (or another file system navigator).
    2. Navigate to the Media folder. Full path: Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media
    3. Within the WhatsApp directory there are three subfolders
    4. Open Media, look for WhatsApp Images in it and see its content:
    • WhatApp images - folder with photos
    • WhatApp video - video folder

As a rule, if a photo is deleted from the correspondence, but not from the Smartphone Gallery, it can be found in the specified folders.

Note . On some models of smartphones and tablets, the folder with files from WhatsApp may not be located on the internal, but on removable media - a microsd memory card. This is usually found on Chinese devices with a modified (rooted) firmware.

Recovery method if photos are left in chats, but not in Gallery

New versions of the WhatsApp application announced a new feature: if you deleted a photo from the Gallery, then by going to the chat where this photo was, you can download it back to the gallery. However, this method of “rescue” is relevant only on the condition that you have not cleared the chat itself, the correspondence with its contents.

How to restore images from a backup file

In addition to Media, there is a Backup directory inside the WhatsApp folder where backups are stored. The messenger generates them automatically once a day/week/month (if this feature was previously enabled in the settings). By default, backups are made every night.

If you deleted a photo sent more than a day ago from the Android Gallery and chat, try restoring it from a backup copy. To restore files and correspondence from backup, you need:

    1. Delete the WhatsApp messenger.
    2. Download and install it again.
    3. Enter a phone number to log into your account.
    4. When the system prompts you to restore data from a backup, agree to the offer (click the "Restore" button).
    5. Wait for installation and recovery to complete.

It is important to consider that the copy will contain files from 1 to 7 days old. It is possible that the documents you are looking for will not be in the archive.

In addition, it is desirable to set up a backup copy every day (to prevent accidental deletion of data). You can do this in the settings, section "Chats" → "Backup copy of chats".

How to recover photos from WhatsApp chat

In the latest version of WhatsApp, media files and documents are stored on the server. Any of them can be re-downloaded if the correspondence in which they were transferred was saved directly. You can do this in the mobile and browser versions of the messenger.

To open the browser version on a computer:

    1. Go to web.whatsapp.com in a browser.
    2. Open the app on your phone and scan the QR code (Settings → WhatsApp Web) .
    3. Please wait until all data is loaded - the messenger can be used.

DiskDigger or Undeleter to search for a deleted photo on the phone's sd card

DiskDigger or Undeleter applications are useful when the correspondence with the desired image has not been saved, but it was previously downloaded to the smartphone's memory. The above applications allow you to find deleted files that have not yet been overwritten. The fact is that when deleting a file, it is not destroyed, but only marked as “suitable for overwriting”. Thanks to this, accidentally erased documents and multimedia can be found, especially if not much time has passed since the erasure.

The algorithm of actions in the mobile versions of DiskDigger or Undeleter is the same (but consider the first option):

    1. Install and launch the DiskDigger application.
    2. Choose the scanning path, in this case, the address of the folder with WhatsApp media files on the memory card (media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media).
    3. Select the scanning method: "Dig even deeper".
    4. Select the file types to be scanned (eg jpg, png).
    5. Waiting for the search to complete.
    6. View the results, mark suitable files for recovery.
    7. Choose where to save the recovered files and click "Save selected files".

Photo recovery on iPhone via Dr.Fone

I should note that this method is ineffective and will work in rare cases (if root access to the file system is provided, which is now rare for modern Android devices). For iPhone, the procedure is as follows:

    1. Download Dr. fone (available for Windows, Mac OS) and run it on your computer.
    2. Connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB cable.
    3. Check "WhatsApp & Attachments".
    4. Click the "Start Scan" button to scan the deleted WhatsApp images in the iPhone memory.
    5. After the scan is completed, the recovered items (all found photos, videos) will appear in the categories.
    6. Select from the list the files you want to recover from the chat
    7. Click the Recover to Computer button.
    8. Check the results.

    Restoring video from WhatsApp chat

We often get questions like this:

“In connection with the purchase of a new device, I transferred all information from Android to PC, made a WhatsApp backup, deleted the application from Android. All photos and videos were deleted, after I found out that they were not on the PC either. I downloaded WhatsApp again - photos and chats were restored, but no videos, covers remained in the gallery, and they have weight, but they are not reproduced! There were very important videos with the first steps of the child and family videos…”

Step-by-step instructions for recovering video from Whatsapp:

    1. Open any file manager for Android.
    2. Go to the internal storage and find the Whatsapp folder. It stores photos, videos, audio and other media objects.
    3. Open the Whatsapp folder, find all the media files there and check their content.
    4. If you don't find anything, go to your internal storage folder at Whatsapp > Trash.
    5. If you can't find the video in the Trash, your content has been permanently deleted (and most likely cannot be restored on your phone).
    6. Recuva You don't need root to recover photos with it, but it only works with the phone's sd card.

Recuva analyzes the memory of the gadget connected to the computer and finds files with the required extension in it. Upon completion of the analysis, you can select the appropriate images and restore them in a couple of clicks.

How to use Recuva and PhotoRec (video):

      The procedure for recovery is:

      1. Download, install and run Recuva.
      2. Select the medium on which the document was deleted.
      3. Start analysis.
      4. Select the desired file and restore it via the appropriate function.

The last option is to ask the sender or recipient for a copy of the photo.

Forwarded media is saved on the devices of all participants in the WhatsApp conversation. Therefore, if all else fails, there is one obvious and simple way - to contact the one with whom the correspondence and file exchange were conducted. The sender or recipient of the image you need can send it again, and you will save time: searching, configuring and trying to deal with Recuva and its analogues.

How can I prevent accidental deletion of files in the future?

The best way to recover photos is not to delete or lose them. If you follow these steps, you will reduce to zero the likelihood of losing valuable information.

      Simple steps:

      1. Make regular Whatsapp backups (instructions).
      2. In the backup settings, enable the "Add video" option to save a copy of this type of file.
      3. Synchronize Whatsapp with your Google account by connecting it through the messenger settings.
      4. Copy media files (photos, videos) to a safe place on your hard drive to avoid accidental deletion from your phone or when copying to Whatsapp.

The bitter irony is that these steps should be taken BEFORE you delete something, not afterwards. So we advise, if you are already faced with the unpleasant problem of losing Whatsapp data, then take appropriate measures.
