Receive Music Suggestions Through Your Instagram Story & More

December 18, 2018

Starting today, you’ll see new ways to interact with your friends and form a deeper connection with the people you follow on Instagram. You can now use the questions sticker for music recommendations in Stories or to connect in the moment with people you follow on Live. You’ll also see a new interactive sticker in Stories that lets you count down to exciting moments together with your friends.

Connect through music on Instagram Stories

Now, your friends can respond to your questions sticker with a song from the music library, and you can share your favorites to your story. Whether you want fresh music to get in the holiday mood, or new tunes to get you through the last few weeks of school, your friends can now help you find the perfect tracks.

You’ll see the new music icon when you use the questions sticker. When your friends respond, they can choose a song directly from the music library to share with you. Open the viewer’s list to see all their responses, and tap the play button to listen to the songs. When you share your favorites to your story, you’ll be able to capture a photo or video as the music plays in the background. You’ll also see new effects in the camera that respond to the beats and sounds of a song. To try the new effects, swipe to “Music” in the camera and you’ll see the new icons above the camera capture button.

The music features will be rolling out on the latest version of Instagram for iOS and Android starting today in regions where our music library is currently available. To learn more, check out the Instagram Help Center.

Connect with the people you love on Instagram Live

You can also use the question sticker in Live, which makes asking questions to people you admire more exciting and interactive. Ask your favorite beauty blogger how to do their holiday makeup look and they can give you a how-to in the moment, or your favorite basketball player how to get that perfect shot and they can show you in real time.

To ask a question and have it answered Live, go to someone’s story and respond to their questions sticker as you normally would. If they go Live to answer, you’ll see “Q&A” in your stories tray. Join the Live video and you’ll see the question they’re answering at that moment. If you want to ask more questions while they’re already live, you can go back to their story to ask a question and it’ll appear in their questions list. People going Live can also share photos and videos from their camera roll to their Live video, so you can see behind-the-scenes content from the creators you love.

Questions in Live will be rolling out on the latest version of Instagram for iOS and Android starting today, and the ability to share photos and videos in Live is available for broadcasters on iOS and viewers on both iOS and Android. To learn more, check out the Instagram Help Center here.

Countdown to your Moments

We’re also introducing a new interactive countdown sticker in Instagram Stories. Build excitement with friends while you count down to any upcoming moment, like the New Year or the end of day on a Friday.

Add a countdown sticker to your story by selecting it from the sticker tray after taking a photo or video. Name your countdown, add an end date or time and customize the color before sharing to your story. After you’ve created a countdown, it will be available in your sticker tray to reuse in new stories until the countdown ends. Your friends can tap on your countdown to follow or share it to their own story; anyone who follows or shares your countdown will get a notification when the countdown ends. The countdown sticker is available globally on iOS and Android – you can learn more about it in the Instagram Help Center here.

As the year comes to a close, we’re excited to see how you’ll use these features to connect with your friends and loved ones. Happy Holidays!

Introducing New Ways to Collaborate and Create with Reels

How to add music to Instagram stories: how to overlay videos and photos

It's done! Instagram has finally launched music in stories in Russia. By the way, this means that we should expect the appearance of Reels soon.

In the meantime, here's how to use the new feature and how to add music to Instagram stories. Now officially and without third-party apps!

To add music to stories, follow the video prompts:

Or our text instructions:

Step 1 . Open the story editor. Create a story as you normally would: add a photo, video, or picture.

Step 2 . Click the sticker icon on the top bar.

Step 3 . Select the "Music" sticker from the menu that appears.

Step 4 . Select the track you want to add to the story. This section has two tabs and a search section. nine0003

For you : popular and recommended tracks.

Browse : Search music by category. If you scroll to the very bottom in this tab, then there will be a division into genres, moods and topics.

Also, some have a more advanced music selection panel, with the ability to add tracks to favorites.

Step 5 . Next, you need to select a fragment of the track that you want to overlay on a photo or video. This is done in the panel at the bottom, on the audio track. To do this, hold the central element with your finger, and move it to the right or left. At the same time, the lyrics of the song will be shown on the screen, which will allow you to quickly find the right moment. nine0003

For comparison, in Tik-Tok, you can use only a small fragment added to the social network by default, and on Insta, any fragment from a song is available to choose from.

Step 6 . We choose the design. You can do this using the toolbar above the audio track. There are several options: the appearance of the words of the song ( karaoke effect ) or the text of the song on the screen, or a sticker, when clicked, opens a minute excerpt of the track at the bottom of the screen. nine0003

Step 7 . After adding music and other design elements, publish the story. Ready!

How to find out what music is playing in stories

If you watched someone's story, you liked the music in it and want to know who the performer is. Then in the upper left corner, under the author's nickname, you will see the name of the track that is used in the story.

Important , this is relevant if the music was added to the story through the editor, and not a third-party offer. nine0003

Conclusion

The appearance of music in stories significantly expands the possibilities of Instagram, both for bloggers and companies, and for ordinary users. In addition, on Insta, at least for now, does not have restrictions on the use of music by commercial organizations, as in Tik-Tok.

Earlier, Instagram explained how its algorithms work and also began testing Reels ads in more regions.

overlay on videos and photos, how to use music stickers

*Instagram and Facebook social networks belong to Meta, an organization whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the territory of the Russian Federation

listens to music on Instagram*

Author profile

Users of Instagram and Facebook* from Russia since June 23 have access to music stickers, a feature that allows you to add song fragments to Stories. nine0003

Music stickers on Instagram* appeared back in 2018, but before users from Russia they were not available: they could not be added to their stories and they could not listen to music in others. Now everything has changed, and now we will tell you how to use it.

Step 1

Go to Instagram* and select a photo or video

Before adding a music sticker, you need to create a post in your story. Go to the Instagram app*, swipe left and either take a photo or video in the app's camera or add it from the gallery. This also works with text stories created by the "Create" button in the side menu of the camera, but not with posts in the feed. nine0003

Process your post - add filters and other stickers - you can at this stage, or you can after adding music.

The button with the image of a note allows you to quickly add a music sticker, but you may not have it on the screen. It's safer to click on the add stickers button and find a sticker there that says "Music"

Step 2

Add a music sticker

Click on the add stickers button and find the item "Music" there. A list of recommended tracks will appear, but there is a search bar at the top of the screen - you can use it to find the song you are interested in. Click on the track you want to add to your story. nine0003

Facebook*, which owns Instagram*, does not disclose the size of the music database, but there are definitely popular performers there. For example, Artur Pirozhkov, Elka and the King and the Jester group.

/guide/youtube/

How to make money on YouTube

Judging by the list, Instagram* forms the “For You” tab based on the user’s subscriptions: I see in the list of musicians that

is subscribed to

Step 3

Select song snippet

After you have selected a song, you will be prompted to set up a sticker. Globally, there are two settings: which fragment will sound in stories and how the sticker itself will look. nine0003

First, select a fragment - it can be up to 15 seconds long. To do this, move one of the two sliders at the bottom of the screen left or right. Next to the sliders there is a button for changing the duration: if 15 seconds is too long, you can trim a fragment of the song.

/guide/tiktok/

Is it possible to make money on Tiktok without songs and dances

The button adjusts the duration of the fragment over time. It does not work for stories with videos: the fragment will last as long as your video. The dotted slider allows you to precisely select a section of the song, and the slider above it is useful for quickly moving through the track

Step 4

Customize the appearance of the sticker

If the Instagram database* contains the lyrics of the song you have chosen, then animated lines will appear on the screen, just like in karaoke. By switching between the buttons at the bottom of the screen, you can customize the font and animation associated with it. The colored round icon at the top of the screen is needed to change the color of the text.

If there is no text in the Instagram database* or you don't want to display karaoke in stories, you can choose one of two static sticker options: they show the album cover, artist name and song title. nine0003

/guide/insta-maska/

When you're done with the settings, click the Done button.

Click on the rainbow button to change the color of the text. If Instagram* doesn't know the lyrics of your song, only static stickers

will be available to you

Step 5

Place the sticker on the screen

You finally got a music sticker! Now you can move it around the screen, tilt and resize it, just like with regular stickers. Pick the perfect location and post what you've got. nine0003 This is what the story will look like after posting

What if I don't have a music sticker?

As a Facebook representative* explained, music stickers will gradually appear among Russian users. This means that you will probably have to wait a few days or weeks - the exact timing is unknown.

To brighten up the wait, you can:

  1. Update the Instagram app* to the latest version.
