How to post a video on Instagram: Tricks you didn’t know

There is no content format quite as entertaining as video.

For years, Instagram advertised itself strictly as a photo-sharing platform. In fact, it wasn’t until the (formerly) popular six-second video-sharing app Vine went viral in 2013 that Instagram finally decided to get with the times and allow 15-second videos.

Nowadays, video is one of the most compelling components of the app. Whether you’re going live on your Instagram Stories or posting an hour-long cooking tutorial on IGTV, video is a great way to post engaging, evergreen content for your followers. In this guide, we’ll cover sharing YouTube videos, uploading high-quality clips, and everything else you need to know about how to post on Instagram.

How to post a video on Instagram

The days of 6- and 15-second video clips are long gone, but that doesn’t mean we’re all able to share full-length feature films. Instagram has a couple of restrictions and rules regarding video length that everyone should keep on their radar.

How long of a video can you post on Instagram?

When it comes to what the length restriction is for videos on Instagram, the answer varies depending on where you’re posting it. The rules regarding length differ for Stories, posts, and IGTV.

Let’s break them down:

  • On Instagram Stories, you can only capture or upload a 15-second video. However, you can post or shoot an unlimited amount of 15-second videos back to back to essentially create one long video.
  • On Instagram posts, you can upload a video that’s up to 60 seconds long. However, you could get around this by posting up to 10 60-second clips on a carousel post to create a video up to 10 minutes long.
  • On IGTV, you can upload a video up to 15 minutes long when doing so from your iPhone. However, when you’re uploading from a computer, the maximum length increases to 60 minutes.

How to post a 3-minute video or longer on Instagram

If you want to post a video that’s three minutes or longer on Instagram, the best way to do it is through IGTV. While there is a separate app for IGTV, you can upload videos just fine through the Instagram app itself.

Here’s how to upload a video on IGTV through the Instagram app:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Press the magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Press the IGTV button at the top-left of the screen.
  4. Press + at the top-right of the screen.
  5. Select the video you want to upload.
  6. Press Next.
  7. Choose your cover image from the video or upload a new one from your Camera Roll.
  8. Press Next.
  9. Fill in the title, description, and other details.
  10. Press Post.

You can also add a link to your IGTV video, which we’ve covered in an earlier article.

How to share a long video as an Instagram post

As we mentioned previously, Instagram only allows 1-minute videos on posts. However, there is a way to get around this rule by using the app’s carousel feature, also known as the multiple photo feature.

Unfortunately, Instagram doesn’t make it easy to do this. If you want to post a long video (up to 10 minutes) on Instagram using the carousel feature, you first need to break the video up into sections. Each section can be up to 1 minute long.

Here’s how you can turn your long video into a bunch of short videos:

  1. Open your Photos app on your iPhone.
  2. Navigate to the video you wish to use.
  3. Press the Edit button at the top-right corner.
  4. Use the sliding arrows below the video to create your first clip.
  5. Press Done.
  6. Press Save Video as New Clip.
  7. Repeat the steps above until you’ve created all of your clips.

Now that you’ve got your video clips ready, it’s time to turn them into a long video via carousel. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Press the icon for your profile at the bottom-right of the screen.
  3. Press + at the bottom-center of the screen.
  4. Press the multiple photos option at the right of the screen above your photo library.
  5. Select the video clips you made out of your longer video. You can choose up to 10.
  6. Press Next.
  7. Edit the color of the clips and choose a filter for all of them if you wish.
  8. Press Next.
  9. Fill out the details of the post.
  10. Press Share.

It’s important to note that since you can only add up to 10 photos and videos to a carousel, your video will be a max of 10 minutes long.

Can you post a video to Instagram from your computer?

Instagram is a mobile-only app, which means that you can’t directly upload new content (including video) to your account through the webpage on your desktop browser. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. There are plenty of third-party apps and services that allow you to upload videos to Instagram through your computer.

Here’s how:

Now, if you want to post a video to your Instagram feed or Stories from your desktop, you’ll have to use a separate tool. Thankfully, Facebook made posting to Instagram from a computer easier with its Creator Studio.

Within the Creator Studio, you can check your analytics, measure your engagement — and post photos and videos to your Instagram feed. However, you have to have a creator or business account to use this tool, and it doesn’t let you post to your Stories.

If you want to post a video to your Stories from your computer, you’ll need to download a third-party tool like Storrito. The free version allows you to post up to 10 Story posts a month, while a paid subscription offers anywhere from 100 to 500 posts.

quoting and other means - n'RIS

There are no so-called "google pictures" or "copyright free music" that can be used without the permission of the author or copyright holder - everything published on the Internet has its own author by default , since these materials were created by someone and once. Copying, borrowing, displaying someone else's work, regardless of whether you want to receive financial benefit or not, is prohibited - civil, administrative and even criminal liability may follow for copyright infringement. But there are ways to legally use other people's work - we tell you how to use copyright photos, videos, music, literary works and other content so as not to violate copyrights.

Using someone else's content: quoting, piracy, plagiarism

According to Art. 1274 of the Civil Code, quoting is allowed without the consent of the author and payment of remuneration to him - this is the direct use of an excerpt from someone else's work with an indication of the source of borrowing. But quoting the works of other authors is possible only if this is done for scientific, polemical, critical, informational and educational purposes to reveal the creative concept or idea that the author wanted to display. The volume of citation must be justified by its purpose, otherwise such borrowing can be qualified as a copyright infringement.

Illegal use of the results of someone else's work, its distribution without the permission and knowledge of the copyright holder is considered piracy. Often, attackers "pirate" the author's object in order to obtain commercial benefits, for example, by reselling pirated copies of films or music albums. If the user also assigns authorship to himself, such actions will be considered plagiarism - it is expressed in the publication of a complete work or excerpts from it without mentioning the source of citation.

It turns out that if a person excessively quotes the work of another author, this can be considered a copyright infringement. At the same time, the pirate simply copies or otherwise appropriates the work and makes it available for use, and the plagiarist signs his name instead of the author's name.

Difference between commercial and non-commercial use

Personal (non-commercial) use of a work refers to the reproduction of the author's work in a narrow circle of friends and relatives, for example, watching a movie at a house party or listening to a music album on the way to work. If the same music album is included as background music in a cafe, bar or restaurant, this will already be considered commercial use, that is, using the object in this way can bring commercial benefits. Commercial use is not allowed without the permission of the copyright holder!

To use the object of copyright for commercial purposes, for example, to print pictures on a T-shirt, you can enter into a license agreement with the author for a certain period, according to which part of the proceeds from the sold T-shirts will go directly to the copyright holder (it all depends on how the parties agree and what terms of use of the object will be agreed) - this way copyright will not be violated. Regardless of the nature, purpose and motives of using other people's works, n'RIS service experts recommend that you always obtain the written consent of the author or copyright holder.

How not to violate copyright using someone else's content

and a year of publication under the work, so as not to allegedly infringe copyright on the Internet, is not enough. This method is common on the Internet, but is not sufficient to respect the rights of the author. By using this mark, you only indicate that the material is protected by copyright, but such use does not imply consent of the author.

The easiest way to obtain a document expressing the consent of the author and containing the conditions for using the object is to sign an agreement on the alienation of the exclusive right in full or a license agreement - the use of the object is subject to restrictions: to what extent it is permissible to use the work, in what territory and in for how long, whether it is necessary to indicate the name of the copyright holder, whether there are any restrictions, and so on.

Contract with copyright holder

The author owns personal non-property rights (the right of authorship, the right to a name, the right to publish the work and the right to protection from distortion), which are inalienable and cannot be transferred to other persons. The author also has a property (exclusive) right that allows him to dispose of his work in one way or another, as well as transfer it to other persons. It is this right that can be transferred by contract.

It is impossible to buy copyright, but you can get exclusive rights to a work both partially (under a license) and in full by concluding one of the types of agreements with the copyright holder:

  • Agreement on the alienation of the exclusive right.

The author transfers the rights to the work in full to another person, after which he can use the work in any way. It turns out that the work has a new owner.

  • License agreement.

The license may be exclusive, in which the author or right holder cannot grant similar licenses to other persons and cannot himself use this object of intellectual property in the way, for the period and in the territory indicated in the issued license, as well as non-exclusive where the right holder retains the right to grant similar licenses to others.

Citation rules

The law allows citation. It can be direct (literal) or indirect, when the text is retold in the words of the author for informational, scientific, educational and cultural purposes. When using someone else's text, you can put it in quotation marks and indicate a footnote to the source of borrowing.

When borrowing other people's words, it is allowed to shorten the sentence or passages - in this case, the entire passage is taken in quotation marks, and the omitted parts are replaced by ellipsis. Such a citation design allows you to give a concise excerpt with individual thoughts of the author from large parts of the text.

Despite the fact that the legislation does not provide for a clear amount of citation, you should not use unreasonably large pieces of someone else's text, otherwise it may be recognized as plagiarism and copyright infringement. Also, you can not insert a quote without a link to the source and pass off other people's thoughts as your own. Read more about what quoting is, why use it, and what you should beware of when using quoting in our other material.

Public License Content

Are there objects that are safe and easy to use? Yes! Usually in such cases we are talking about content that is provided under an open license - this is a license agreement concluded in a simplified manner, popular all over the world. As a rule, an agreement with a license is placed in the public domain on the site, and agreement with it is confirmed by clicking on a special checkmark in the browser window - the license is considered granted from the moment you agree to the terms of use. What conditions an open license must meet, we have already described in our blog.

There are different types of public licenses, but the most common is Creative Commons, under which content is distributed completely free of charge, without any royalties to the author or copyright holder. The essence of an open license is that everyone can use the work at their own discretion and an unlimited number of times. This type of license has subspecies, which, in particular, may impose a ban on the commercial use of the author's object, these are:

  • СС BY

A work with this marking can be distributed, edited and even used for commercial purposes, but the author must be indicated in the credits to the project.

  • CC BY-SA

May be distributed, modified, and used for commercial purposes, but a derivative work based on someone else's work will be distributed under the same license.

  • CC BY-ND

May be distributed and used for both commercial and non-commercial purposes, but may not be edited or translated into another language.

  • CC BY-NC

Permission is granted to rework, correct and develop the work only on a non-commercial basis, that is, you can create a derivative work based on this license and show it to others, but distribution for commercial purposes is prohibited.

  • CC BY-NC-SA

May be distributed, edited and used as a basis for creating a new work for non-commercial purposes, provided that the derivative work is distributed under the same rights.

  • CC BY-NC-ND

The license has the most restrictions of all. Others may receive and distribute the work as long as they credit and credit the author, and modification and use of the work for commercial purposes is prohibited. With this mark, you should not use someone else's work in your project.

Works in the public domain

According to Art. 1281 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, the exclusive right to a work is valid throughout the life of the author and another 70 years after his death, counting from January 1 of the year following the year of the author's death. Related rights to phonograms, productions and performances are valid for 50 years from the date of the recording. After the death of the author, exclusive rights pass to his heirs or copyright holders, and after 70 years it becomes an object of the public domain - such a work can be freely used by any person without anyone's consent or permission and without payment of royalties in accordance with Art. 1259and Art. 1282 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation.

Despite the fact that a work that has entered the public domain can be used by anyone and implemented in their projects, it cannot be modified that will defame the honor and dignity of the author or distort the author's intention. You can rework a work, because as a result of processing, you do not make changes to an existing original work, but make a new one based on it.

Peculiarities of using someone else's content

In Russian law there is a concept of "free use", according to which, without the consent of the author and copyright holder, it is allowed to use someone else's content:

  • For quoting that is justified by scientific, polemical, critical, informational or educational purposes without commercial use. For example, when used in abstracts and dissertations, for implementation in medical organizations, institutions of the penitentiary system, and so on.
  • For use by blind and visually impaired people.
  • For commenting and sign language translation.
  • When creating works in the genre of literary, musical or other parody or in the genre of caricature.

But we remember that you cannot take someone else's work without the author's approval, and you must obtain permission to use the author's work so as not to violate anyone's rights. In addition to the methods of registration of rights described above, you can go the other way, for example, write to the author or copyright holder directly via social networks or email. But it is desirable that a document with a living signature of the author remains on hand, since in the event of disputes, the examination of documents received electronically will be quite expensive.

Many pictures, videos, texts, and even software with games are distributed under the Creative Commons open license, which allows you to use the content completely free of charge. Usually such content can be found on special stock sites. To make sure that this is possible, read the rules or regulations of the platforms that host the content that interests you. Also, in the "footer" or footer of each site, there is usually information about the license under which the content is posted - you can write to the site owner by e-mail and ask for permission to use the posted material.

Images: photographs, illustrations and collages

Every photograph always has an author, whether or not he has given a name. Popular misconception: if you put down the source where the photo was taken, then it can be used. Indeed, it is good form not only to mention the name of the site from which the photo was borrowed, but also to have an active link to it. But do not neglect the requirement of the law on the need to obtain the consent of the author. If the author finds his work on a third-party resource, he may demand to remove it or pay compensation, he has all the rights to do this.

Cropping an image does not relieve you of the obligation to respect copyright. Cropping a photograph or using part of it may distort the author's intention, which means that the right to the inviolability of the work will be violated. For such cases, in addition to the consent of the author to use, permission is required for its processing, even for color correction.

Collage is a composite work of many independent ones. To include an image in a collage, you must also obtain the consent of the author, or purchase a license to include it in a composite work.

Earlier we wrote that you need to check the image for copyright before using it. The image can be used in several ways without the author's permission:

  • For personal purposes, for example, you downloaded a photo of a painting to find it in a museum.
  • When creating cartoons and parodies, that is, the processing of a work for humorous purposes.
  • For citation, for example, a photograph was included in a study in which one author relied on the work of another author - so too copyright will not be violated.

The legal way to use photos is to subscribe to photobanks, which are intermediaries between the authors of the images and their buyers. Photobanks have a huge number of legal images, their services are used by almost all publishing houses in the world.

Dozens of specialized sites distribute photos under a Royalty Free or Creative Commons license. Such photos can be downloaded and used free of charge without any additional royalties. Most popular free photo sites:

  • Shutterstock;
  • Free Stock Photos;
  • Pixabay;
  • Free Digital Photos;
  • IM Free;
  • FreeMediaGoo.

Video and music

Along with texts, photos, music, quoting video excerpts without the permission of the copyright holder is allowed - this will not be considered a copyright infringement. For example, YouTube allows fair use of excerpts from works for educational, scientific, informational, polemical purposes, but a clear amount of borrowing (quoting) has not been established, so it is difficult to say how long a borrowed video is allowed. It is possible that using a 5-second segment from someone else's work in a training video will not block it

If you need music for videos for social networks TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, you can use their free music libraries. When using songs from these libraries, the posted video will not be blocked, as the authors or copyright holders have provided a license to use their music under a license agreement.

Free music can be found under the Public Domain license, which provides compositions that have passed into the public domain, or the authors transferred the rights to their work to the public during their lifetime. Under the Creative Commons license, compositions are distributed completely free of charge without any royalties to authors and copyright holders - music under this license can be found on SoundCloud, ccMixter, Free Music Archive, Freeplay Music.

A license that allows you to pay only once per song and use it indefinitely - Royalty Free. But the selected composition can be included in their work by other persons, which means that it will also be found in the work of other authors.

You can also look at sites with paid content, such as Shutterstock, Epidemic Sound, Audiosocket, where you can buy the rights to use the song. But pay attention to the terms of use: is it allowed to be sold for commercial purposes, in which country is it available, what is the license term, is it necessary to indicate the name of the author in the description of the video, and so on.

Since you cannot buy copyright, you can purchase the right to use music, for example, by contacting the copyright holder directly or a society for the collective management of copyright and related rights (OKUP), for example, in RAO (Russian Authors' Society) or WIPO (All-Russian Organization of Intellectual Property). Organizations act as intermediaries between the right holder and the buyer, conclude relevant agreements and charge a fee for the use of objects of copyright and related rights.

If you need a composition for a limited time, you can contact the copyright holder or their representative directly and agree on a license to use it for a certain period of time. One of the conditions should provide for the payment of remuneration, for example, a one-time payment, in the form of monthly deductions or percentages of sales income, and so on.

Musical works that can be freely used without asking the author's permission include national anthems and works that have fallen into the public domain. In other cases, the permission of the copyright holder is required.

Texts and literary works

Many authors put a copyright symbol at the end of their work - it only informs third parties about who owns the work, but this does not mean that it can be freely used. The indication of the mark does not imply the consent of the author with such publication. Without the permission of the author, it is allowed to quote the text for scientific, polemical, critical, informational, educational purposes to reveal the author's creative intent. But even this should not be abused: the amount of citation must be justified by its purpose.

Any texts on the site are also someone's property, even if there is no copyright symbol at the bottom. Since copying and rewriting these texts without the permission of the site owner is a violation, you can acquire the right to publish the text in several ways without violating copyright:

  • Under the terms of an open license posted on the site. You are only allowed to copy content from the site, but you cannot change it.
  • Under a license agreement on granting the right to use the work is limited.
  • According to the agreement on the alienation of the exclusive right, the rights are completely transferred from the author to the new copyright holder.

Another option is to have the text written by a full-time or freelance writer. In the first case, the text will be an “official work”, which is created on assignment under an employment contract, so the rights to it are transferred from the author to the employer, unless otherwise provided by the contract. When working with a freelance writer, you can conclude an author's order agreement, according to which the performer must prepare the required text within the specified time frame - this agreement must include a condition on the transfer of exclusive rights.

You can use someone else's content without violating copyright, but you need to be careful. Always check who is the author or owner of the intellectual property. Even if it is presented under an open license and is available for free use, you need to study the rules for its implementation. You cannot buy copyright on someone else's content, but you can always purchase a license to use the work.
