As the fourth most popular social media platform in the world behind Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp, Instagram is a great place to share video content. But like every other app, it’s always rolling out new features, and it can be hard to keep up with all of the different options for posting videos. How do you decide between a regular Instagram video post, a reel, or a story? Below we break down each video type and how to post them, plus how to add extras like location tag, music, and gifs to keep eyes on your content.
Our full-featured video editing tool is as powerful as it is easy to use.

3 types of videos on Instagram
There are three different types of videos you can upload to Instagram.
- Instagram videos. Instagram videos (replacing the former IGTV) are essentially regular video posts that live on your profile alongside photo posts, and within their own video page on your profile. So a regular video post is a great option for content that you want to appear permanently on your page (or at least until you delete it). Instagram now allows 10-minute long videos for regular users, and up to 60 minutes long for blue checkmark-verified users.
- Instagram reels. Often thought of as a competitor to TikTok, Instagram reels are best for attention-grabbing videos, and high-performing reels might even get your content in front of new viewers. You can embellish reels — which now have 90-second time limit — with music, text, and graphics. Instagram reels appear in your scrolling feed, and can also be found on the tab between your regular feed and Instagram video section.
- Instagram stories. Instagram stories are short video clips, up to 15 seconds long, and are usually more casual and less-produced. They only show up on your page for 24 hours before they disappear. But you can also save your content as a story highlight, which will pin the clips to the top of your profile permanently (or until you remove them). Videos that exceed the 15-second limit (but are less than 60 seconds) will automatically separate into 15-second video clips when you upload them as a story, for up to four videos. You can watch Instagram stories by clicking the profile avatars that appear across the top of your main feed — your own story will always appear first in the queue, even after you’ve watched it.
How to post an Instagram video
The optimal aspect ratio for an Instagram feed video is 4:5 (for portrait mode) and 1.91:1 for landscape mode (though both can be adjusted to a 1:1 ratio by double-tapping the preview screen or single-tapping the double arrows in the frame’s bottom-left corner). The minimal frame rate for videos is 30 frames per second (FPS), and for dimensions, the optimal size is 1080 x 1350p. All videos under 10 minutes have a maximum file size of 650 MB, and videos up to 60 minutes have a max file size of 3.6GB.
To upload a video to the Instagram app:
- Open your Instagram app. If you’re not already logged into your Instagram account, enter your username and password on the login screen.
- Navigate to the upload screen. Click on the “+” sign at the top right of the screen, whether you’re on your home scrolling feed or profile page. Click “Post.”
- Find your video. After you click “Post,” a screen will pop up with an album of your most recent photos and videos. To browse a different album, select the drop-down where it says “Recents” and choose another option. Select the video you want to post. You can also click the icon with two squares to select multiple videos and make an album, or click the camera icon to record a video to post.
- Adjust your video frame size. Double-tap the video preview or (single-tap the double arrows) to expand or shrink the size of your video frame. When you’re finished adjusting, click the “Next” button in the top right corner.
- Edit your video. Instagram provides several editing features you can use before you upload your post. Select from a number of image filters, trim the length of your video, or turn off the sound completely using the “Volume” button at the top middle of the screen. Click “Next” when you’re done.
- Add any final details. After you’ve made your final edits, click on the video preview (where it says “Cover”) to choose the part of the video you want to use for the thumbnail. On this screen, you can also tag other Instagram users, add a location, create a promotion, share to Facebook, and more.
- Upload. Once you’re ready to post, click the blue “Share” button at the bottom of the screen. To edit or delete your post after uploading, click on the ellipses at the top right of the post, then select your option.
How to post an Instagram reel on your profile
Reels offer a number of fun flourishes you can add to your videos. Video reels are meant for vertical viewing, so a 9:16 aspect ratio with dimensions at 1080 x 1920p works best when posting content. To post a video reel to your Instagram profile:
- Navigate to the upload screen. Click on the “+” sign at the top right of the screen, then click “Reel.”
- Select your video. To record a new video, click the center button on the reel upload screen. To select an existing video, click on the blue plus sign on the bottom left of the screen.
- Adjust your video. After selecting your video, you can trim the length by using the tool at the bottom of the screen, or adjust the speed using the left sidebar. Click “Add.” If your video is less than 90 seconds, it will move to your post queue and you’ll return to the upload screen where you can record or add another video segment. If you only want to post a short video, click “Next.”
- Edit your video. On this screen, add music, filters, captions, drawings, stickers, and more to your post. After you’re done adding flourishes, click “Next.”
- Tag and share. On the share screen, you can edit your cover image, add a caption, tag other users, rename your audio selection, and add a location. You can also choose whether or not your reel will display in your regular feed. When you’re ready to post, click the blue “Share” button on the bottom right of the screen.
How to post a video on your Instagram story
The optimal size and dimension for Instagram stories is 1080 x 1920p, with a 9:16 aspect ratio for portrait mode, and 16:9 for landscape mode. To post a video to Instagram stories:
- Navigate to the upload screen. Click on the “+” sign at the top right of the screen, then click “Story.”
- Choose your video. Record a new video by tapping the first “Camera” panel, or choose a video from the album of your choice. If the video is over 15 seconds, it will automatically separate at each 15-second mark of the video for up to one minute.
- Edit your video. On the preview screen, you can toggle the audio on or off, turn the video into a Boomerang, add captions, filters, stickers, music, gifs, and more. Click the ellipses in the top right corner to draw on your video or save it to your camera roll.
- Upload your video. Click the bottom left button to upload the video directly to your story feed, or hit the “Close Friends” button to only share with a select group of users.
Before you publish to Instagram
Before you start posting videos on Instagram, here are a few tips to ensure it all goes smoothly:
- Consider using hashtags. Using trending hashtags in your video captions can help expand the reach of your content and attract new viewers to your page.
- Follow the guidelines. Instagram has a few rules pertaining to posting content. For example, they do not allow content containing full nudity, hate speech, or threats of violence. Read through Instagram’s community guidelines before posting your content.
- Keep your videos to the point. If your videos are too long without a lot going on, people might lose interest in your content quickly. That said, if slow-moving content is your thing, go for it.
- Check the audio. If your video contains copyrighted music, there’s a high chance Instagram will remove your video. However, using the music feature on the app will let you overlay music to your video without risk of violating their guidelines.

How to edit video for Instagram: quick tips for Stories, Reels and Posts
(Image credit: Meta/Future)If you want to edit video for Instagram, you have a number of options for doing so. However, the first thing to establish is what kind of video you’re planning to post. Instagram has taken a while to figure out its video offering, and you currently have a few options for where and how you can post videos.
Currently on Instagram, you have three main methods of posting videos – Stories, main feed posts and Reels. Until recently there was also the long-form IGTV app, however Instagram’s parent company Meta announced that it would be shutting down IGTV as of March 2022, due to lack of interest and a desire to simplify the platform’s video offering. You can also go Live, but since we’re talking editing here we’ll leave that alone for now.
UPDATE July 2022: video posts are (almost no more) – an Instagram Reels update means that all videos less than 15 minutes in length will now automatically be shared as Reels.
In this guide, we’ll take you through each type of video you can post on Instagram, explain the requirements and how best to edit and optimise your videos for each one. For more powerful video editing options, check out our guide to the best video editing software, as well as the best free video editing software if you’re on an extremely tight budget. Also, bearing in mind that Instagram works best on mobile, our guide to the best video editing apps might also be helpful.
Posting video on Instagram
(Image credit: Jon Stapley/Future)The easiest way to get started posting your video on Instagram is to hit the + symbol at the top right of the screen. This will take you to the menu where you can select what type of content you want to post. The top three options will be Post, Reel and Story. Select which one you want to post, and you'll be taken directly to the editing and uploading interface.
So, let's look at each one in turn.
How to edit video for Instagram feed posts
(Image credit: Jon Stapley/Future)An Instagram feed post is the simplest way to share a video. The in-app editing functionality here is quite limited, meaning that if you simply want to share a video on your feed, you may want to edit it beforehand in a separate app or program. Here are the key things to remember.
Set the dimensions: You can post a video in Instagram’s traditional square format, or in the dimensions it was originally shot. When selecting your clip from your gallery, click the two-arrows icon on the bottom left to toggle between these options.
Remember the time limit: You’ve got a maximum of 60 seconds when posting video clips to your Instagram feed.
(Image credit: Jon Stapley/Future)Trim and add filters: In-app, you can use the uploader to trim your video clip, or to add one of Instagram’s famous filters (though they are a bit passé these days). If you want to add music, text or effects, you’re best off either doing it beforehand or using either Reels or Stories, as the post editor doesn't offer this functionality.
How to edit video for Instagram Stories
(Image credit: Future)Instagram Stories are short, ephemeral photos and videos that show up at the top of a user’s feed, and disappear after 24 hours. Originally introduced to compete with Snapchat, Stories have since become a key part of the Instagram experience. Here are some tips for editing Instagram Stories.
Think in 15 seconds: An individual Instagram Story is 15 seconds long. If you upload a longer video, it’ll automatically be split into multiple stories, but this can make for a disjointed experience for the viewer. You can individually select parts and remove them to isolate a 15-second section, but the breaks may not be where you want them. It’s best to plan in advance and trim your clips to 15 seconds or less before upload – your phone’s native video app will likely be able to handle this.
Stay vertical: Instagram Stories are almost exclusively viewed full-screen on a phone display, so portrait format dimensions (1080 by 1920 px) are what you need to be thinking in. If you do have video that’s a different orientation, you can always zoom in manually in the interface like you would with a photo, but remember that this will have an impact on the quality.
(Image credit: Jon Stapley/Future)Remember what you can do in the app…: The Instagram app makes it easy to add simple things to your Stories. You can overlay text, add music (the app links up with Spotify), rotate video, zoom in, move the video around the canvas, add a background, overlay photos from your gallery, and more. If you have simple tasks like these in mind, the easiest thing to do is probably handling it in-app.
… and what you can’t: The Stories interface isn’t much for colour correction. There are Instagram’s well-known filters named after cities, which you can access by swiping left or right in the Stories interface, but honestly these are pretty lame. For simple colour correction or stylish presets, you’re best off looking into an app like Adobe Premiere Rush.

How to edit video for Instagram Reels
(Image credit: Jon Stapley/Future)What Stories were to Snapchat, Instagram Reels are to TikTok. These are short clips that can be posted to the main feed, or continually scrolled through just like TikToks.
Create in-app if possible: You can add pre-recorded clips to a Reel by tapping the camera roll icon at the bottom left, but unlike TikToks, Reels don’t let you add many effects to these clips. You can add text, stickers and music in a similar interface to Stories, but the more advanced stuff is fenced off unless you’re shooting in-app. Simply tap the centre button to start recording, or use the clock icon to start a recording timer.
Set the length: Reels can be set to 15, 30 or 60 seconds – they don’t have to be exactly these prescribed lengths, but they cannot exceed them.
Use transitions: In the Effects panel (accessed by tapping the stars icon), you can find some useful Transitions to get you from one clip to another. These include effects like Warp (whip between clips when you turn your head left or right), Spin (trigger a spinning transition by tilting your head), Zoom (tap a section of the frame to transition by zooming in on that area) and more. They can be really handy for stitching clips together smoothly.
Save effects: The effects interface on Reels is a big sprawling mess. If you find an editing effect you like, save it using the bookmark icon so that you can easily access it again.
(Image credit: Jon Stapley/Future)Align your clips: Once you’ve added your first clip, you’ll notice a new icon on the left-hand menu bar. This is the Align tool – selecting it will bring up a ghost overlay of the end of your previous clip, which you can then align the next shot to. This is useful for smoothly transitioning between clips.

Open the main page of Instagram*. Go to your page or immediately look for the “+” icon in the upper right corner. You will be prompted to create a new post.
There are two ways to add a video to a future post:
- Drag the desired videos to the download window. You can drag them one at a time or several at once. The clips will appear on the screen.
- Click on "Select from computer". A window will appear in which you can select the path and the desired files to download.
When the files are uploaded, they will appear on the screen.
You can crop the edges of the clip and center itEach video can be trimmed or the order of the clips can be changed if it was disturbed during loading, and the video that should have been the first turned out to be the second or third.
You can change the order of videos or add more videosTo change the order, click on the white square in the lower right corner. You can also add a few more videos - for this, just click on the plus in the circle.

- turn off the sound.
The settings apply to all downloaded clips. To switch between videos and adjust the next one, click on the arrow in the center of the right edge of the video.
You can see how each video will look after publicationIf you like everything done, click on "Next" and find yourself in the next window. This is the post creation window. Here you can add finishing touches before posting.

How to add video to stories from phone
Instagram features are roughly the same for Android and IOS devices, so the instructions are identical. Buttons and options have the same name, the difference may lie in the installed versions. Step-by-step instructions for the mobile application:
- Launch Instagram.
- Swipe right or tap on your profile photo.
- Click on the camera to start recording or upload a video from the gallery.
- Set the necessary parameters (sound, effects, labels, stickers, inscription).
- Click Next.
- Choose who will see the story (at this stage, you can limit the circle of people for viewing).
The video has been added to the story. If it is long, the story will automatically split into several parts. To make the content bright and attractive, it is recommended to use filters and masks. They are located to the right of the record button. Swipe right to find the lucky effect.
To post a video with music, use the reels option. It allows you to add popular music from Instagram without copyright infringement. To add music to the story, use third-party editors.
Recommendations for making high-quality videos
- Use a good camera, Instagram users are demanding, a low-quality video will cause a mass unsubscribe.
- To shoot a video directly from the story editor, hold down the camera and start shooting. Release the button to stop.
— Move your finger up/down to zoom in or out.
— The red moving outline shows the time until the end of the recording.
- Once the video is up, click next to share.
- Specify the circle of faces to view, apply effects and an inscription (if necessary).
- Post a story.
When one slide is completed, the second slide will be automatically recorded. No need to interrupt to continue shooting. If the video is unsuccessful, reset everything and start again.
Shooting modes
Instagram offers a range of tools for capturing varied and high-quality videos.
Boomerang
This is a kind of GIF-ca. The mode allows you to take a series of photos that turn into an endless video.
Level
This mode helps you to see and adjust the level of the camera for high-quality and smooth shooting. This avoids skewed and inverted frames.
Hands free
This is a remote shooting mode. You just need to press the record button, without holding. Suitable for shooting with a tripod. To stop recording, press the button again.
How to post a story from the gallery
In addition to instant shooting, you can upload a ready-made video from your phone:
- Open Instagram.
- Go to the stories section.
- Tap on the gallery icon or swipe up.
- Select a file.
- Edit and publish.
The option helps to publish pre-edited videos or previously recorded ones.
How to upload a story from a computer
There is no possibility to add stories in the web version of Instagram. To do this from a computer, you will have to install a mobile space emulator on your PC. One of the most popular is Bluestacks. How to work with it:
- Download the program to your computer.
- Install Instagram.
