Instagram Stories: Everything you need to know

Instagram Stories have become a staple on the social media app since the feature's launch in 2016. Instead of posting carefully curated photos that will stay on your feed indefinitely (unless you delete them), Stories lets you post several images that play like a slideshow and disappear at the end of the day.

You can upload photos, videos, text or posts from other accounts to your Story. Since Stories don't show up on your main grid of photos, they're perfect for an image or message you want to share with your followers without having to commit to making a full, captioned post. 

Stories function as an alternative way to see the most current activity from the people you follow (though you can now bring back chronological feeds). Stories are placed in a horizontal line directly above your feed: If someone you follow has posted a Story in the past 24 hours, their profile image will appear with a colored circle around it. Tap the image, and you'll see that account's Story. Keep tapping, and you'll see all of the day's Stories posted by accounts you follow.

Navigating through Stories is simple. While browsing the Stories of your friends, swipe right to go to the previous one, left to go to the next one and tap to skip the current photo or video. If you want to linger on one photo, you can pause a story by tapping and pressing the screen. To start the story again, just lift your finger. This also works for video. You can swipe up on a Story to react to it, or you can simply press the heart on the bottom right corner to Like it.

Making an Insta Story is a lot like Snapchat

Stories are temporary videos, photos or text that are strung together to form a slideshow gallery that, well, tells a story.

You can save your photo, send it to friends or add it to your Story.

There are a few ways you can start an Instagram Story: You can swipe right or hit the blue plus sign on your profile picture, or go to the top right side of the screen and hit the plus sign there. Once you've done one of these, follow the steps below. 

1. Tap the circle button at the bottom of the screen to take photos or tap and hold to record a video. To add photos or videos from your gallery, swipe up on the screen or tap the photo icon in the lower-left side of the screen.

2. Edit the photos or videos with text (the Aa button) or add a drawing (the button with three dots).

3. Tap Done to save your Story.

4. Tap the Your Story button to share it to your Story, or the Close Friends button to share with a customized list of accounts.

I used the color picker (a little eyedropper that shows up next to the color options) to make the text and star match other colors found in the photo.

If you click the Arrow icon, you can shoot your image or video to one of your friends at the same time as it posts to your Story. Just tick the bubble by Your Story, then Message and the person you want to share with. The image will disappear after your friend sees it.

Repeat these steps if you want to add more than one photo or video to your Story. Each photo you add within a 24-hour period will be placed in your Story.

You can select up to 10 photos at a time from your gallery or use the multi-capture feature (Go to the camera screen, hit the downward carrot on the left). 

After you share your new Story, a colorful circle will appear around your profile photo to let your followers know you've posted new content. Your profile picture will also pop up at the top of your followers' Feeds. All they need to do is tap your face to see your Story.

If you have a habit of adding things to your social media accounts that you later regret, good news! Stories can be removed. Tap on the three dots at the bottom right of the photo or video you'd like to delete and hit Delete.

Boomerangs, hands-free and live video, oh my!

Aside from regular photography and videography, Instagram provides several options to mix things up on your Story.

Boomerangs

Boomerangs are fun, short videos that play forward and backward. 

1. To start a Boomerang, swipe right from your feed. This will take you to the Stories camera. 

2. Select Boomerang on the left.

3. Tap record to shoot a short burst of photos.

Hands-free

No need to press and hold to make a video anymore. The Hands-Free option in the left menu lets you record a video without, well, hands. 

1. Swipe right from your feed to open the Stories camera.

2. Hit the downward carrot on the left. 

3. Tap the Hands-Free button.

Live video

You can make live videos in your Stories, too. It works a lot like Facebook's live video feature. 

1. Swipe right from your feed to open the Stories camera.

2. Scroll among the options on the bottom and select the Live option.

3. Options on the left let you title your Live video, schedule it and set it to public or private.

When you go live, a Live tag will pop up on your Instagram Stories bubble to alert followers. 

Spice up your shots with filters, stickers, GIFs and text

One of the best things about Snapchat is the ability to add fun and flair to your photos. Instagram Stories have a bevy of customization features, too. After shooting a photo or video, swipe across it to add a filter. You can choose from options like Lagos, Los Angeles and Abu Dhabi.

If you see someone else using a filter on their Story and you want to give it a try, tap the name of the filter (below their username). A menu will pop up allowing you to try it instantly or save it for later.

Stories also let you add augmented reality filters to your pictures, just like Snapchat. Here's how to try them out. 

1. Go to the Stories camera. 

2. On the bottom, scroll across the different filter options. (Scroll to the end and tap the magnifying glass to browse even more effects.)

3. Tap the filters to try them on.

4. When you find a filter you like, snap a photo or take a video. These filters also work on Instagram Live.

Once you've picked your filter, add some stickers. You'll find a stickers button with a smiley face on it in the top right corner next to the text tool. Tap the button, and you'll be able to jazz up your Story with customizable stickers. Some options include the weather, the day of the week, holidays, quizzes and polls. Once you add a sticker, you can add another, move it around and resize it. 

You can also make your own stickers from images in your gallery. Here's how:

1. Take a photo or video, then tap the stickers button.

2. Scroll until you find a circular icon showing your most recent camera roll photo.

3. Tap that icon, and select one of your images to use as a custom sticker.

4. Once the custom sticker is on your story, tap the sticker and it will transform into shapes like hearts and stars. 

Hashtag stickers are another customization option. Just tap on the sticker that says Hashtag and customize it with your own hashtag. Other people will be able to tap on the sticker and find other photos with the same hashtag. You can also add a hashtag to regular text on your Story and it will be clickable, too.

If you want a sticker for something specific -- like, say, cats -- search "cat" and you'll be presented with both emoji options and gifs. To add a GIF sticker to your post, go to the sticker option and tap on the GIF icon. A library of the moving photos will open, provided by Giphy. When you find one that you like, just add it like you would any other sticker. Searching the word "Effects" will get you sparkles, hearts and other fun additions for your subject's environment.

Once you have your stickers added, go crazy with some snappy text. To add text simply tap on the text icon in the upper right side of the screen and tap on your color of choice. If the colors just aren't right, don't despair. Swipe left on the color palette to reveal more options, or tap the eyedropper icon to pick a color from the image.

Don't want to share a photo at all and just need a blank canvas for text? Go to the Story camera and hit the Aa button on the left. Tap the colorful button on the bottom right to change the color of the canvas.

Swipe through the icons on the bottom to see options for gifs, countdown widgets, quizzes, question prompts your followers can answer, and more.  

The results may be frightening.

Tag your friends and followers

When adding text to a Story, all you have to do is include the @ symbol followed by the username to tag someone. The tag is a live link to the person's profile and you can tag up to 10 people.

Share Stories with Direct messaging

You can share other people's Stories by tapping the Direct icon (it looks like a flying paper airplane) on the bottom right of the Stories' screen, choose the friend you want to share with, write a message and tap Send.

When you get a Story sent to you, it will come to your Direct inbox. Be quick, though. When the story disappears after 24 hours, you won't be able to look at it.

If you don't want people to share your Stories, just turn off the sharing ability. Go to your Story camera > Settings icon > Story and toggle Allow Sharing to Messages off.

Flipping through Stories is pretty easy

Navigating through Stories is super simple. While browsing the Stories of your friends, swipe right to go to the previous one, left to go to the next one and tap to skip a photo or video.

If you want to linger on one photo, you can pause a story by tapping and holding your finger on the photo. To start the story again, just lift your finger. This also works for video.

Banish annoying people

If you cringe every time you see a certain someone's Story in the lineup, you can mute it. Simply tap and hold on that person's Story icon when it appears in your Story lineup. A window will pop up that will give you the option to mute this person's stories.

Muting doesn't hide the Story totally. It just moves it to the last of the lineup and it won't automatically open while you're playing Stories. You'll need to manually unmute people to get their stories back in the normal mix. Just tap and hold on that person's Story icon and tap the unmute option.

You can also choose who gets to see your Stories and who doesn't. Want to prevent your parents from seeing that epic Friday night out, for example?

1. Go to your Story camera.

2. Tap the Settings icon.

3. Choose Story.

4. Tap Hide My Story From. Select your parents (or whoever else you want) from the list and tap Done. They will still be able to see your posts and profile, but they won't see your Story.

You can prevent certain people from sending you messages from your Story, too. In your Story settings, select an option from the Allow message replies list. You can choose Your followers, Followers you follow back or just Off to prevent anyone from commenting.

Curious to see who's looking at your story? Open your story and swipe up on the screen. At the bottom of the screen will be a view counter and the names of the people who viewed it, plus a heart next to the people who Liked it. Only you can see this information.

Your Stories don't have to disappear forever

If you've become attached to your Story and don't want it to lose it forever, you can download it to your phone. Open your Story and tap the More icon bottom right of the photo or video. Then tap Save.

You can easily save your Stories to your camera roll, automatically, too. Go to your Story camera, find your Story settings and slide the Save story to Camera Roll option on. Every time you create a Story, the videos and images will be automatically saved to your camera roll on your phone.

If you decide you want everyone to see your photos or videos more permanently, you can add them to your profile grid. Simply open your Story, tap the three dots at the bottom right of the photo or video and tap Share as Post. The photo or video will appear in your profile grid. Just beware, whoever can see your profile grid will be able to see the photo or video. It will no longer have special protections that you can add to Stories.

Skip, Rewind, Pause, Re-post, and Respond.

At one point, Instagram  simplest of all social media out there. There were no sponsored posts and, most notably, there were no Stories.

Instagram actually made quite a bold introducing the Stories feature. There were a lot of people who thought it ludicrous, but it is now evident that they made a good call, as everyone uses stories today. With so many stories out there to go about, you’ll want to be able to pause a story, either to take a better look at it or to take your eyes off the screen for a moment.

On Instagram, you’ll find yourself spending a lot of time scrolling through people’s Stories. Having to watch all of them every day might be somewhat excessive, but this is exactly what Instagram wants – the more Stories you view, the more other users will be inclined to post them.

Skipping and Rewinding and Instagram Story

If you are an Instagram user who scrolls through stories only to make sure that you’ve “seen” them all, you probably know that tapping the right part of your screen will just skip through each item in a Story. Tapping the left part of the screen will, of course, take you to the previous photo or video, while swiping from right to left will take you to the next user’s Story.

Pausing and Rewinding an Instagram Story

If you need to take your eyes off the screen while watching a Story, tap the screen anywhere and don’t release. When you want the story to continue, simply lift your finger.

Re-posting an Instagram Story

Instagram is all about the visuals and you’ll want your posts and Stories to look the best they can. Re-posting Stories is a popular thing on the platform. It’s like retweeting, but with Stories. However, in order to have a simple option to click ‘re-post’ and be done with it, you’d have to be tagged in the Story. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case with Stories that you want to re-post, especially if we’re talking about celebrities.

Taking a screenshot is a legitimate way of reposting a Story. However, if you land your finger anywhere on the screen to see the Story, you’ll see that the user who posted it will be essentially watermarked, as well as the Send message bar and the story “timers” at the top of the screen. What many Instagram users don’t know is that taking an ideal, clean screenshot of a Story is very easy. Just be careful when tapping the screen not to move it, and you’ll see everything but the story itself will disappear.

Responding to an Instagram Story

This isn’t the most advanced and useful way of pausing a Story, but when you swipe up or tap the Send message bar, the story will pause and your keyboard will show up. Of course, this isn’t convenient for screenshots and usually doesn’t work if you want to take your time to see the actual content, as the background is dimmed and the keyboard covers nearly half the screen.

However, this way to pause a Story is useful because it allows you to send a direct response to the poster of the story. By tapping the bottom of the screen, or swiping up, you can send a message or an emoji response to the poster.

Tagged Photos

Yes, this is an even stranger way to pause a Story, but people do tag other people on the Stories feature. You’ll recognize the tags by the “@” in front of a username. Just tap on any tag on a story and a small card will appear above the name, not even dimming the story’s background or covering a large part of the screen with a keyboard.

However, not all photos feature tagged users, which doesn’t really make this a good solution, but rather a hack for the Instagram-savvy people who know what to tap and when at all times.

Double-Tap on iPhone

This solution may be a bit ‘out there’, but if you are an iPhone owner, there is another hack that you can use to essentially pause a Story. You should double-tap the home button to bring up the active app list and find the Instagram app without tapping on it.

Insights from research on the effectiveness of Instagram Stories

The Instagram stories format has become popular among users in two years - today 500 million people from all over the world watch stories every day.
But brands and bloggers still have questions: how to evaluate the effectiveness of this format? How to work with him?

What is the reach of Instagram Stories?

The team at Delmondo, a social media analytics tool, conducted a study to determine the key parameters for evaluating the effectiveness of stories. The study was conducted for six months, with a sample of more than 5,000 Instagram accounts.

One of the most interesting questions answered by the authors of the study: what should be the reach of Instagram Stories in relation to the number of subscribers?

As you can see from the table, the average Reach Rate for Instagram Stories is 7. 2%.

This number is highly dependent on the subject and features of your account. And yet, the result of the study will help you navigate how successful your stories are.

On average, an Instagram post gets 3 times more reach than a story. Firstly, because the post remains in the account forever, and the stories disappear after 48 hours. Secondly, Instagram has a billion active users, and the Stories format, as we wrote above, has 500 million. At the same time, Stories open in full screen, so the value of one contact in this format is higher.


How many stories can you post per day?

According to the Delmondo study (and common sense), a small number of stories work better. However, with a very large number of publications, the engagement of the audience remains: people have already spent a lot of time viewing the content, so they are interested in scrolling through all the published stories to the end.

As you can see from the graph, the view rate remains almost the same between 21 and 50 stories.

These figures are relevant for stories from events, when real-time content immerses users in the atmosphere of an ongoing event.
So if you don't fit into the top 10 stories with the best view rate, keep filming: engaged users will watch the next stories as well.


Involvement in Stories

The first and last frames get the most engagement.

This is true not only for stories, but also for the video format in general. To make the user look further, he needs to be interested in the first frame. If this does not happen, it will simply close your page.


Best Time to Post Stories

Algorithmic feeds allow you to forget about the time of publishing content. And for the Stories format, this advice is not entirely objective, because a significant part of the content is created in real time.

Still, the Demondo team analyzed which hours and days of the week give the best results for reaching Instagram Stories.

It turned out that late night and early morning are good for posting: few users create content at this time, so you have a better chance of showing up to the user. And the leader in terms of engagement are stories published during the Easter holidays (in Europe). The authors of the study explain this by the fact that during the weekends, users have more time to view content.

Snapchat Stories Ad Creation Rules

Snapchat's story format appeared earlier than Instagram's. Although the platforms differ, Snapchat's research and recommendations for creating ads for stories can be trusted, because the platform has a lot of data about this format.

Stories are more like TV than newsfeed: content in full screen, sound automatically turned on. Therefore, in advertising, you need to show the advantage as quickly as possible.

Hello friends! Today we have very exciting news! Many people asked me to talk about a new update on Instagram, so I am writing this article 🙂

So, in early August, a new feature appeared on Instagram - "Instagram Stories" or, translated into Russian, "Instagram Stories". In fact, on Instagram itself, this feature was called “Instagram Stories”, but this name reminds me too much of school literature lessons, so I will use the term “Instagram Stories”. I like him better!

It turns out that the latest Instagram update is not just a small option, but a solid extension of the functionality. Who cares, this feature is not unique to Instagram, as it was previously created and launched by the developers of the popular Snapchat chat application. You know, I have been closely following Instagram for several years, but such an open rip off of the functions of other applications, and even directly with the name, has never happened in the entire history of the application. This feature caused a lot of enthusiasm among users of Snapchat, and Instagram, apparently, decided to drag the blanket over itself first results for companies and brands.

When will I have Instagram Stories?

So far, the US is the first, as always, but Instagram says that within two weeks (but according to the situation that I see, even longer) “Instagram stories” should appear for all users! I know that many of them already have them, regardless of the type of device and geographic location.

I waited a long time, but hooray hooray hooray! My stories appeared today, that is, August 26, 2016. So, friends, wait for detailed updates in this article! As soon as I get comfortable, I will add new, additional information. If you have any questions about the stories, ask in the comments and I will try to add all the answers to this article.

Now let's talk about the function itself and what it is.

What are Instagram Stories or Instagram Stories?

Instagram Stories allows users to share the main events of the day in a convenient slideshow format, i.e. "Your Story". You can add several photos and/or ten-second videos to this slideshow at the same time, which will be automatically combined into a single slideshow.

To put it quite simply, Instagram stories are the same circles with the faces of friends / logos of accounts that you follow and that appeared at the very top of your news feed. Each such circle represents the daily history of this account, but if the circle is circled in color, then this means that something new has appeared in the history of this profile.

If you want to view someone's story, you can either click on the circle of the desired profile at the top of the news feed, or go to the profile of interest and view the story from there. When you click on a circle, its history will open in full screen and you will be able to view all the photos and videos uploaded there in the order they were added, that is, from oldest to newest.

Your unique story every day!

So, guys, if you have a busy day, then with the new feature you will not bombard your followers and friends with a string of photos and videos. Now you can add everything you want to a convenient slider, where everyone can see what happens to you during the day. By the way, again, a function from Snapchat, you can add emoticons, text, as well as your own drawings to photos from Instagram Stories . Pay attention to an important thing! Your photos and videos from Instagram Stories will only exist for 24 hours . After this time has passed, your story is deleted along with the photos and videos that were added to it - they will not end up in your gallery!!!

With the launch of the new feature, Instagram developers hope that users will share more "real" photos and videos, as at the moment Instagram is more like a photo exhibition, where only the best, retouched photos go. While Instagram Stories should encourage users and companies to publish less "delicious" photos that no one dares to publish in their official gallery for fear of losing face. And here the story lives only 24 hours - it’s not so scary that there is something not so mega artistic, made according to the latest technology and trends. In a word - life as it is, without pretense 🙂




Distinctive features of Instagram stories

I think that until we can try the new feature ourselves, it's not so easy to understand how it will work. In order to make it easier to understand her work, at least theoretically, I created a list of distinctive features of Instagram Stories that are important to know about.

I have divided the list into sections to make it easier to navigate. This function is very large, one might say, an application within an application, so it has a whole lot of possibilities.

Main details:

  • You can add as many (I don't know if this is true?!) photos and 10-second videos to your story, which will be shown as a slider.
  • story lives only 24 hours. New day, new story.
  • You can add photos and videos both from the gallery and take new photos and videos directly for stories. Note that Instagram will not officially allow you to use old photos and videos in stories, so if you need to trick it, you are here.
  • You can add filters, emoji, text and pictures to your photo. For drawings, we have three brush options available with a large selection of color shades: from custom to arranged palettes.
  • Since photos and videos from stories disappear after 24 hours, you can save them to your phone or publish them manually in the profile gallery. This must be done, of course, before they disappear for good)) Unfortunately, there is no way to save the entire story - only individual photos and videos.

Stories display:

  • the user will be able to view the stories as they wish, without any imposition from the app, as the stories will not be pushed to the news feed (see below where you can see the stories).
  • stories in the news feed (remember the circles?) will be displayed in the order of your interaction with the profiles of other users, i. e. first you will see your "favorite" accounts, and then all the others will follow. Simply put, the Instagram algorithm also works here.
  • when something new appears in the user's history, the circle is circled in color.
  • You don't need to follow a profile to view its stories, except for private profiles of course (see below).

User interaction with stories:

  • if someone wants to comment on a photo or video in your story, you will receive a private message via Instagram Direct. After 24 hours have passed, the photo / video will disappear from the correspondence, but the correspondence itself should remain.
  • Instagram stories will not have likes and public comments.
  • You will be able to see the number of views of photo and video stories, as well as see the names of everyone who watched them (see the next section of the article with a screenshot).

Privacy and other settings:

  • if you have a private profile, only the subscribers you allow will see your stories.
  • for others - stories will be open to everyone, but you can choose to block stories from certain people in your privacy settings. So, you do not block the user completely, he simply will not see your stories.
  • You can also prevent certain people from sending you private messages through Instagram stories.

You can also simply swipe left anywhere in the news feed to start creating a story. Everything will be very easy! You just need to wait for the feature to appear!

Instagram has made it possible for a user to find out who has watched their stories. To see who saw your story, you need to open it and swipe up on the screen. Here you will see the number of people, as well as the names of those users who viewed the photo or video of in your story. Please note that this is not public information! ONLY YOU can find out who has seen your stories!

Adding pictures and text to photos is easy! In the upper right corner you have the corresponding icons, by clicking on which you can draw something or add text.

How do I post a story from Snapchat to Instagram?

Guys, a small update, as so many in the messages asked to add this information. You can add snaps from Snapchat to Instagram, but for this you will have to complete a rather long series of actions, since, unfortunately, we do not have an easy way.

Addition: Recently I came across an interesting Face Snap application that allows you to add Snapchat masks to photos. I personally have not tried the application, but if this option is interesting, then the application can be viewed here.

Below is a video in English showing how this is done. Just in case, I also added a step-by-step instruction in Russian, if something is not clear.

Step 1: Create a Snapchat story.

Step 2: Click on "load/save" in the lower left corner of the screen.

Attention! In order to make the task a little easier , you can click on the load/save icon with a long click. This will save the snap immediately to the phone's gallery. This way you can skip steps 3-7 .

Step 3: Exit the snap by clicking on the "x" icon in the upper left corner.

Step 4: Click on the memory icon at the very bottom.

Step 5: Under the Snaps tab, select the Snap you want to upload to Instagram.

Step 6: Swipe up to open the editor.

Step 7: Click on the hamburger button in the upper left corner and click on the "Export Snap" → "Save" photo/video.

Step 8: Open Instagram.

Step 9: Go to the Instagram home page (house tab) and swipe right. Alternatively, you can access Stories by clicking on the "Create Story" option, which is located in the upper left corner of the home page.
