How do you feel about groups in text messaging apps? Telegram is one of the best texting apps for creating both private and public groups. Perhaps you’re part of some online communities created through Telegram groups and are thinking about starting your own.
Or you just want to start a group chat for you and your besties to both keep things private and safe and be as goofy as you want to be. But are you ready to take the role of the Telegram group administrator? First, you have to create a Telegram group.
Creating a Private Group
The only prerequisite to creating a Telegram group is that the people you’re going to invite to join must have Telegram accounts. If they don’t, you can send them the invitation link via email, for example, and then they can download the app and join. For those who already have, they should have the last updated version of Telegram.
If you want your Telegram group to be private, and keep it only among friends, this is how you go about it:
- Open the Telegram app. Tap on the pencil icon in the lower right corner.
- At the top of the screen, you’ll see “New Group”.
- Tap on the names from your Contact list to add.
- Once you’re done selecting people for your private group, you can change the name of the group and the group icon.
It’s important to remember that you’re the group’s administrator now, and you can choose to add more people to the group or remove those already added. A private Telegram group can’t be found on the Telegram search and it’s meant to be used more internally. It doesn’t have to be only you and your close friends. Telegram private groups are convenient for co-workers or event planning.
Private Group Invitation
It’s a simple process to add people from your contact list in a Telegram private group. But what do you do when you want to add someone who’s phone number you don’t have listed in the contacts? Telegram solves this dilemma by allowing you to send an Invite Link to anyone. Provided they use Telegram or are planning on using it in the future. Just follow these steps:
- Open your private Telegram group.
- Tap on the group’s name at the very top.
- Tap on the pencil icon at the top right corner.
- Tap on “Group Type”.
- You’ll see the Invite Link. You can:
- Revoke Link
- Share Link
- Select “Copy Link” or “Share Link” to send the invite to whoever you want to join your group.
You can also add an Admin for the group if you want to share the responsibility. In addition, you can add Telegram Bots to engage in the conversation. Furthermore, you can pin messages, ban users, delete any messages you want, and change the group info at any time.
Creating a Public Group
A public Telegram group is meant to be used more externally. And public group first started out as a private group. If you’re ready to take your private group to more people, or if that was your intention all along, here’s what you need to do:
- Open your Telegram group.
- Select “Group Type”.
- Switch from “Private Group” to “Public Group”.
- Now you have to set the permanent link. You can use all letters, numerals, and underscores. Minimum five characters.
When you’re done setting your permanent link, your public group is ready to be found by other users. Unlike private Telegram groups, public groups can be found on search and any user can join them. You can also copy the permanent link and send it to those who might like to join the discussion.
Adding a Bot
Public groups could benefit immensely from adding Telegram bots. You can add a weather bot, news bot, or a bot that does polls. It’s a good way to test people in the group on where they stand on certain questions or issues. Here’s how you add a bot to Telegram group:
- Open Telegram and go to search (top right corner).
- Type in the bot you’re looking for and select.
- You can test the bot first if you want and then tap on the name of the bot on the very top.
- Tap on the Menu (three vertical dots). And select “Add to group”.
- Select the group where you want for the bot to go.
Public Telegram group can have up to 200,000 members and every member of the group can use the permanent link to post it anywhere on the internet and to invite other people to join.
Choose Your Reach
Creating a public and private group on Telegram is surprisingly similar. But what each ends up having as a purpose is drastically different. You can have as many private groups as you want and stay in touch with all of your cliques. And you can join many public groups to see what’s going on. As is the case with everything else, Telegram groups can be something helpful and fun, but it can also turn into a bit of a burden.

In the first issue, we explain in detail with illustrations where to click to create and set up a group / channel in Telegram.
Channel vs group: what to choose
There are two entities in Telegram - a channel and a group. Both can be used as a place to distribute content, but there are important differences.
The mechanics of the channel is similar to the public Vkontakte, where one or more admins publish messages, and the rest read. A business, media or blogger distributes information, and subscribers consume it: they read posts, watch pictures and videos, participate in polls, put reactions and comments.
The group is more like a WhatsApp chat where everyone can speak. This format is suitable for supporting students of an online course, access to classified information, communication within a team, and organizing large thematic communities.
The article below demonstrates the process of creating a group and a channel on the desktop version of the Windows application.
The appearance and layout of the buttons on the macOS and smartphone versions will differ. If you can't find something or have other difficulties - write in the comments. We will try to help)
How to create and set up a group
1. Open the menu in the upper left corner.
2. There you will see the first two buttons. Click on "Create Group".
3. A box will appear asking you to enter the name of the group. You can also set an avatar here if you click on the camera icon. When you're done, click "Next".
4. In the next window, Telegram will offer to add people from the contact list to the group. You will need to select at least one member for the "Create" button to become active. A maximum of 200,000 people can be invited this way.
You can also manually invite members to an already created group. At this stage, it is enough to add one to move forward.
5. After clicking the "Create" button, your new empty group will open.
6. To change the group settings, click on the three dots in the field with the name and select the "Group management" command.
7. A block with settings will open. At the top, you can change the name and avatar, as well as add a description of the group. Below are other group settings.
8. If you click on the "Group type", you will find yourself in the privacy settings. Here you can make the group public so that anyone can join it. Or leave the group private so that you can join it only by invitation link.
Here you can also copy the link to the group or share it with Telegram users. In a private group, the link acts as an invitation for new members to join the group.
If you click on the three dots to the right of the link, additional options will appear:
- "Generate a QR code" - this code can be placed on a business card / banner / handouts so that people consider it their phone and go to the group,
- "Reset" to deactivate the previous invitation link and create a new one.
If in a private group Telegram itself generates an invitation link, then in a public group you will need to register it yourself.
For example, you can make a link that is consonant with the name of the group
Below is the Manage Invites button. By clicking on it, you can create additional links with a limit on the validity period and the number of transitions.
This link may be needed in advertising. For example, if you post a selling post on a popular Telegram channel and indicate that only 1,000 people will click through. This will provide additional excitement.
To create such a link, go to Manage Invites and click the Create New Link button.
Inside you can:
- set the expiration date of the link and limit the number of group members,
- give a name to the link that only admins can see - can be useful to distinguish links from each other,
- switch the toggle switch "Application for membership" - if you make it active, the admin will need to approve each application for membership manually.
Click Add to save the link.
Under "Manage invitations" there is a block "Content saving". If you activate the toggle switch, none of the participants will be able to copy, save or forward materials from the group.
When you have made all the changes in the "Group Type" settings, do not forget to click "Save" so that the settings are not reset.
9. If you click "Chat history for new members" in the group settings, you can choose whether previous messages will be visible to new members or not.
10. By clicking on "Reactions", you can set the emoji that group members will put on each other's messages.
Here you can completely disable this feature or select allowed emoji.
This is how the reactions to messages look like. This is a cool thing that allows you to express your attitude to content without words. Mechanically similar to reactions in Instagram Stories*
11. In the "Permissions" block, the capabilities of the participants are configured.
Here you can choose which actions will be available to group members and which will not. If you disable all features for members, only admins can post content to the group.
You can also set "Slow Mode" here so that members can only post one message per limited period.
At the very bottom there are two more buttons:
- "Exceptions" - allows you to limit the opportunities for a particular participant for one day, a week or forever. This function can be used as a punishment in case of violation of the community rules,
- "Black list" for exclusion of participants from a group with a ban on re-entry.
12. The "Invitation Links" block duplicates the "Manage Invitations" button in the "Group Type" settings - we talked about it above.
13. In the "Administrators" block, you can assign additional group admins and set up their range of capabilities.
To appoint a new administrator, go to the "Administrators" block and click the "Add Administrator" button. Telegram will open the list of group members. Choose among them the one you want to appoint as an administrator.
If the person is not in the group, enter their name in the search bar. When you click on the found user, Telegram will offer to invite him and appoint him as an administrator. Press "OK"
When you add an administrator, you can immediately configure his capabilities - leave the necessary ones and disable unnecessary ones. For example, if the new admin will be a moderator, you can leave the ability to delete messages and block members, and turn off the rest.
You can rename the admin position below. Write, for example, "moderator", "manager" or "murketologist".
To reconfigure the capabilities of an existing admin, you need to go to the list of administrators and click on it. The same window will open as when adding a new admin.
14. In the "Participants" block, you can view the profiles of current participants and add new ones.
To open a group member's profile, click on it in the member list. From the participant's card, you can go to a chat with him if you click "Send message".
To add new members to the group, click on the "Add Members" button.
This can be done by force - without the prior consent of users, add them manually. Or intelligent - send out an invitation link to the list of contacts and give them the opportunity to decide whether to join or not.
15. Recent activity block will be needed to control admins.
You open it and see what your admins have done in the last 48 hours.
16. At the bottom left of the settings window there is a button "Delete group". She deletes the group.
How to create and set up a channel
Steps 1 and 2 are the same as in the group creation algorithm.
3. Already at the creation stage, Telegram offers to choose whether the channel will be public or private. The differences are the same as in the case of groups: the materials of public channels are available to all users, the materials of private channels are available only to subscribers.
Also, for a public channel, you will need to immediately register a link, and for a private one, it will be created automatically.
Both the channel type and the link can be changed later in the settings.
The next window to add the first subscribers to the channel will open. Manually at this and subsequent stages, you can add up to 200 users, but no more than 50 in one day.
4. When the channel is created, click on the three dots in the line with the channel name and click on the "Manage Channel" button
5. The "Edit channel" window will open, in the upper part of which you can change the name and avatar, as well as add a description.
The "Channel type" block contains the same options as the similar block in the group settings. Read more here.
6. The function of internal comments for the channel is sewn into the "Discussion" block. If you want subscribers to be able to comment on posts, discuss them and communicate with each other, connect.
The first thing to do is to click on the "Discussion" button.
Telegram will offer to create a new group in which all comments on posts will be saved, or select an already created one.
To link an existing group, click on it and in the pop-up window click "Link Group".
If you decide to create a new group, the same window will appear as when creating a group normally. Change the name of the group if necessary and click "Create". Settings, avatar and description can be adjusted later according to the instructions described above.
Done. Now you can comment on your posts.
7. If you activate the toggle switch in the "Sign messages" block, each post will be signed with the name of the admin who published it.
It looks like this
8. Blocks "Reactions", "Administrators", "Subscribers", "Black List" and "Recent Actions" are configured and work similarly to the same blocks in the group. See links for instructions.
The Delete Channel button deletes the channel.
Bonus: in this video tutorial you can see how to set up comments for a channel from your phone.

What is a Telegram group and how it differs from the channel
A channel is a microblog for publishing informational content - texts, links, media files. Suitable for news feed, author's notes, announcements for articles. You can see how it looks on the example of our Telegram channel - @postiumru (by the way, support us by subscribing).
A Telegram group is essentially a chat where people communicate with each other. The group unites participants according to their interests - they can be motorists, employees of the same enterprise, classmates, close friends.
The group can accommodate up to 200,000 people .
Both the group and the channel can have administrators, but in the group they are usually more loaded - if there are a lot of people there, you need to constantly monitor what users write, delete spam, block annoying members who violate the rules.
You can have both a channel and a group - in the first one, participants will receive interesting information, and in the second, they will discuss it among themselves.
How to make a Telegram group and manage it
On the example of the desktop version of the messenger.
Create a group
Click on the menu icon (3 bars).
Next, click on "Create Group".
We come up with a name and click "Next". You can immediately upload an avatar for the group, for this you need to click on the blue circle with the camera.
You can immediately add members from the list to the group, or invite them later. The selected participant is marked with a checkmark. They are added forcibly, that is, without consent, but later they can leave the group. At the stage of creating a group, you can invite 50 people this way.
After adding participants, click "Create". The group is created, Telegram will show a welcome window with its capabilities.
Group management in TG
Group management and configuration is done through the menu, these are 3 dots to the right of its name. There are several sections here, let's go over each and tell you what they are responsible for.
1. Group information . In this section, you can see the name of the group, the number of participants, change the avatar. Enabled notifications mean that each message from the chat will come with sound to all its participants. If there are a lot of participants, this is annoying, so the creator of the group can immediately turn them off by moving the slider to the off position. Group members can turn off notifications themselves.
2. Disable notifications . This is the same as what we just described above, only this button enables / disables notifications in 1 click - you do not need to specifically go to the group information section.
3. Group management . Here you can change the name, description and photo of the group. Below is the group type - Private (closed) or Public (open). Chat history can be hidden for new members - then they can read up to 100 recent messages or open - they will have access to the entire history of correspondence since the group was created.
Even lower is setting permissions for members and assigning administrators.
3.1. Setting permissions
These are the actions that chat participants are allowed to:
- send messages;
- sending media files;
- sending stickers and GIFs;
- preview for links;
- creating surveys;
- adding other participants;
- message pinning;
- Group profile change.
By default, all 8 permission types are enabled for everyone in the group. They can be disabled or assigned an exception for specific users through the exceptions tab.
You can also set the message interval, for example 1 message per minute.
3.2. Adding administrators
Administrators are needed to keep order in the group, the subsection is located in the "Group Management" section. We click on it.
Next, click "Add Administrator". Select the person you want from the list and click on it. We immediately indicate the level of rights available to him and the name of his position.
Please note that if there is a lock on the slider, then this permission is specified in the group settings as enabled for everyone, and it cannot be canceled for the administrator. First you need to disable it in the general settings, and only then for a specific admin. The same works in the opposite direction - you can disable the ability to add other members in the group settings, but leave this permission for the administrator.
4. Adding participants . This section allows you to add new members from your contact list if you didn't do it right away when you created the group.
Those already added are shown with a gray checkmark.
5. Create survey . Polls are needed to be interested in the opinion of the audience. Created in a couple of clicks in the group menu.
You need to come up with a question, answer options (up to 10) and the type of voting - anonymous, multiple choice or quiz mode.
The survey can be pinned, stopped or deleted. Also, each participant can cancel his vote.
6. How to pin a message . In the chat, messages constantly replace each other, if you need to pin someone's message to a prominent place, you need to right-click on it and select "Pin message".
It looks like the screenshot below. If you need to unpin it, just click on the cross.
7. Reactions . If you want people to be able to like posts in a group, you need to enable reactions. To customize reactions, open your profile and click "Edit". Then select Reactions. On the page that opens, you can enable and disable reactions under posts.
8. Export chat history . Allows you to save the chat to a separate medium. We choose what to export (for example, only a photo), for what period and the saving path. By default, it is exported to the default Telegram folder.
9. Clear history . Everything is clear here - we erase the history of correspondence.
10. Deleting a group. And finally, if the group is no longer relevant, you can delete it - to do this, click on the appropriate section in the menu.
How to make a group private
How to make a group private and how to make an invitation link? In general, now the group is created closed by default. But you might want to make it public and then close it again, so we'll show you how. First, click on the 3 dots to the right of the group name.
Here we find the item "Group Management", click on it.
In the “Group type” item, we have “Private” by default, that is, it is already closed. To change its status, click on "Private" and select what you need. For example, if you want to open a group, click "Public". Then it can be found in the search. If you need to close again, click "Private" again, then "Save".
How to make an invitation link?
After 50 members, people can only be invited to a closed group using a special link.
