It sure was a long time coming, but Facebook dark mode officially launched last year and while it was initially limited to PCs, you can now get dark mode on your iPhone and Android devices too - hurrah!

Facebook dark mode is a new look for the social network that replaces its usual bright, white interface with black and shades of gray for both desktop and mobile. Although that may not sound like a big deal, if you were one of the first to get Google Chrome dark mode, you likely already know the benefits it can bring.

Whether you have one of the best Windows laptops or a more a fan of the best MacBooks and Macs, using Facebook dark mode can help make the text easier to read, which protects your vision by reducing eye strain. Plus, although research is still somewhat limited at this time, there is evidence to suggest that cutting down on blue light in the evenings can help you sleep better.

If you have the best iPhone or one of the best Android phones, there's even more good news for you, with research from Google showing that pixel color has a direct effect on power draw , with black pixels using significantly less energy than white ones. This means that swapping Facebook's bright, white interface with Facebook dark mode could help your mobile device to last longer between charges.

You'll find Facebook dark mode super easy to activate across all of your devices, but just in case you need some instructions on how to do it, we've compiled some guidelines below for both desktop and mobile devices. Let's take a look...

Facebook dark mode for desktop

Facebook rolled out a new design for its desktop site earlier this year, including an optional dark mode. It took a long time for the new design to be rolled out to everyone, but in October 2020, the process was finally complete.

To access Facebook dark mode for desktop, simply click the menu button at the top right (a downward-pointing arrow), select 'Display options', and then use the switch to toggle dark mode on.

If you preferred the old-style Facebook layout and chose not to switch to the new version when given the option, you can still get a similar experience by using Google Chrome to 'force' dark mode on Facebook. The effect isn't as slick as the official dark mode, but it's similar.

First make sure you have the latest version of Chrome. If you're not sure, open the main menu, select 'Help' and then 'About Google Chrome', and the browser will find and install any available updates automatically.

Now visit chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark in the address bar, and change the first drop-down box you see from 'Default' to 'Enabled'. You'll be prompted to re-launch the browser, so make sure you save any work first.

When Chrome re-opens, you'll find that every site you visit, including Facebook, now has inverted colors where appropriate. It's not yet perfect (sometimes white parts of images are turned black incorrectly), but it works quite well overall.

To change back, simply return to chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark and change the setting back to 'Default'.

Facebook dark mode for iPhone and Android

It was a long time coming, but dark mode is also available for Facebook on iOS and Android. To enable it, tap the menu icon at the top right of the app (for Android) or the three lines in the bottom right-hand corner (for iPhone) and select 'Settings and Privacy' (represented by a cog icon).

Here, you'll see the 'Dark Mode' option (with a moon icon). Tap this, and you'll see three options: on, off, and use system settings. The first two are self-explanatory, and the third will pick up whichever color scheme you've chosen for your phone's operating system.

Dark mode is also available in Facebook Messenger. To activate it, simply tap your profile picture, then tap the 'Dark mode' switch.

How to Enable Facebook's Dark Mode on iPhone and iPad

When it came to adding a Dark Mode option to its iOS app, Facebook was late to the game. The social network announced it was coming in June 2020, but dragged its feet for months before eventually rolling it out to mobile users in November the same year, over 400 days after Apple first introduced the feature in iOS 13.

‌Dark Mode‌‌ has been available on the social network's website for a while now, and some of Facebook's other apps, including Messenger and Instagram, have long featured ‌‌‌Dark Mode‌‌‌, so it's unclear why the company's flagship app took longer to gain the feature. If you've only just learned that the Facebook app has a ‌Dark Mode‌ and you'd like to give it a go, follow these steps.

Launch the Facebook app on your iPhone or iPad.
Tap the Menu tab (the three lines icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen).
Tap the Settings & Privacy section to expand it.
Tap Dark Mode.
Tap On to enable ‌Dark Mode‌.

Note that there's also a System option on the last screen. Selecting this will adjust the appearance of the Facebook interface based on your device's system settings (Settings app -> Display & Brightness).

Dark mode for the Facebook Android app is now slowly rolling out, albeit very slowly. Dark mode for Facebook on Android should be coming to everyone in 2021.

If you can't wait that long, download the beta version of the Facebook app for Android instead - it will have dark mode built into it.

Enable Facebook Dark Mode iOS - iPhone, iPad, iPod

On iPhone, enabling Facebook dark mode is the exact opposite - dark mode can be enabled in the iPhone app with just a couple of clicks.

To do so, open your iPhone's Facebook app > Settings > Settings & Privacy > Dark Mode > Turn on Dark Mode.

That's it, you are now using Facebook in dark mode on iPhone. Everything is simple, right?

Please note that the above method works for ALL iOS devices, including iPad and iPod. Just follow the instructions and you will have dark mode running.

Enable Facebook Dark Mode on Mac and Windows

Facebook is predominantly a web app, so the web version of Facebook tends to get new features earlier than the Android or iPhone versions of the apps. And Dark Mode for Facebook is no exception.

Enabling dark mode for Facebook on Mac and PC works exactly the same. All you have to do is go to Facebook > click the down arrow in the right corner > Settings > Enable dark mode

This will switch the browser version of Facebook to dark mode. Switching to dark mode for the browser version of Facebook will change ALL Facebook apps and features, including Facebook Messenger.

This means that once you have switched Facebook to dark mode in your browser, all of its apps will now show up in dark mode configuration - from Messenger to Facebook apps and games.

If you are using the Google Chrome browser and are familiar with Chrome Flags , you can use this flag (chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark) to force all sites you visit, including Facebook, to appear in dark mode.

What about Facebook Messenger dark mode on iPhone and Android?

Because Facebook for Android and iOS is NOT a web app, it is a native app designed specifically for iOS or Android, you have different feature sets for each version of the app.

For the most part, the Facebook app for iPhone is the most complete and up-to-date version. The Android Facebook app works fine, but it lacks some of the features found on the iPhone.

The most notable of these is the ability to switch Facebook Messenger to dark mode.

Enable Facebook Messenger Dark Mode on iPhone

On iPhone, switching Facebook Messenger to dark mode is as easy as opening Facebook Messenger > Clicking on your profile picture > And then enabling dark mode.

Enable Facebook Messenger dark mode on Android

On Android, everything is about the same. Just open Facebook Messenger > Click your profile picture > and then enable dark mode.

Your Messenger app will now display everything in black, including all of your discussions, emoji boxes, and search features.

I don't see the dark mode option on Facebook

If you followed the steps above and you don't see the Dark Mode option in your Facebook app settings, it means that the version of the app you're using doesn't support dark mode.

If you are using an iPhone, make sure you are using the latest version of Facebook. You can do this by going to App Store > Click on your profile icon > See all updates > If Facebook needs an update, click Update.

This should bring dark mode to the Facebook app on iPhone.

If you're using Android, dark mode doesn't work inside the app yet. It is said to be coming soon and some users have access to it, but the rollout is currently very slow.

The only sure way to get Dark Mode in the Android Facebook app is to download the beta version of the app - you can do it here .

But remember: this is a beta version, so there may be bugs and problems. For this reason, my advice would be to just wait until Facebook officially launches it.
