How to Use Facebook on Windows 8.1
Our notebooks, tablets and desktops enable so much that it’s easy to forget the things we do with them on a daily basis. If you have a computer with internet access, chances are you visit Facebook often.
Facebook has everything. You can instant message people regardless of geographic location or wireless carrier. You can scroll through their status updates, looking for clues to how their life is going. Facebook is where many people upload and store their pictures. With Windows 8.1, Microsoft hoped to make activities we repeat multiple times a day easier. Visiting Facebook is among those things. Here’s how to use Facebook on Windows 8.1.
Primarily, there are three different ways you can use Facebook in Windows 8.1. Two of the those ways are likely very familiar to you and the third is a dedicated feature of the People app in Windows 8.1. You can use a web browser, download the dedicated Facebook app for Windows PCs, and that dedicated People app.
Download the Facebook App
The Windows Store included on your Windows 8.1 device gives you easy access to thousands of apps made by third-party companies and a huge swath of apps dedicated to tasks that you probably do in your web browser now. Facebook has a free app available in the Windows Store. This app includes everything from messaging, to status update browsing, to photo uploading.
To use Facebook on your Windows 8.1 PC, download the Facebook app here. Note that you’ll need to sign up for a Microsoft Account if you haven’t already. You can add a Microsoft Account to your PC from the Settings app under Account. Since the app is free, you shouldn’t need to add a credit card if there isn’t one attached to your Microsoft Account already.
Once you’ve downloaded the app, open it from the Start Screen. Since it hasn’t been pinned to the Start Screen yet you’ll need to add it there by tapping or clicking on the arrow at the bottom of your screen to see a list of all your installed apps.
Open Facebook.
Login with the same username and password that you’d log into the Facebook website with.
Welcome to the dedicated Facebook app for Windows 8. On the left you’ll find the navigation, and easy to browse collection of your events, friends, photos, messages and a news feed. At the top of the screen are buttons for adding Status updates, Photos and Check-In. A list of your favorite friends on the right hand side.
Use The People App
Microsoft attempts to weave your contacts and social network messages into one app. That’s the People app, and it’s available in every version of Windows 8.1 and through the Windows Store.
The People app supports Twitter and Facebook, but it’s the latter we’re focusing on here. Go to the Start Screen and look for the orange People icon. You need to add permissions for your Microsoft Account to access your Facebook Account, if you haven’t already done so. To do that, open the People app and place your finger on the right side of your screen and slide it slowly to the left to reveal the Charms Bar.
Then tap Settings. If you have a mouse and keyboard, place your pointer in the top-right corner of your screen and then click on the Settings Charm. Now tap or click on Accounts.
Welcome to the People app. Tap or click on the Me tile to get a breakdown of all the incoming messages from Twitter or Facebook you’ve received. You can send new messages to Facebook under the What’s New area.
Tap or click on a particular status update to add a comment or like it.
The People app is a great way to take charge of you Twitter and Facebook accounts all from one place. That being said, it’s really limited in what it offers.
Another What’s New area from the apps home page gives you a real-time look at what’s being see on both social networks. Unfortunately, it’s really made to be touch-centric and isn’t ideal on notebooks and desktops.
Use Internet Explorer
Finally, there’s Internet Explorer.
Instead of using the dedicated Facebook app you can open the Internet Explorer app and go directly to the Facebook website. Visiting the website gets you a familiar design and access to the site’s complete list of features. Pin it to your Start Screen for easy access by clicking on the star icon after you’ve navigated to Facebook.
Then click or tap on the Pin icon.
Now click or tap on Pin to Start.
Once you log into Facebook in Internet Explorer you’ll be asked to save your password just like you would in an app.
Good luck using Facebook on your Windows 8.1 notebook, desktop or tablet.
Facebook for Windows 8.1 now available
Hot on the heels of Windows 8.1 itself, Facebook for Windows 8.1 is now available to download in the Windows Store. With Facebook for Windows 8.1, you get direct access to your Facebook News Feed right from your Start screen where you can stay connected with your friends and family.
Facebook for Windows 8.1 will feel familiar because it uses the same layout and visual look and feel you see on Facebook.com – making it super easy to use. You will see new friend requests, messages, and notifications at your top right. Your News Feed is there as you would expect it to be. You can compose a new post, add photos or check in. You can switch between your different feeds (e.g. Group, Photos, Following, Family, etc.) so you see all the news and updates you want to see.
On your right, you have your friends list where you can see who is available to chat. With Facebook integrated into Windows Phone, you can send friends with Windows Phones messages directly from Facebook for Windows 8.1 as if you were sending them a text (that’s assuming they’ve connected their Windows Phone to Facebook). On your left is the sidebar for quick access to things like your friends page, messages, photos, your pages (I manage a page for my puppy Kilo), your groups and the Nearby feature which presents all the recent places your friends have checked in to using Bing Maps.
On your friends page, you can use semantic zoom to quickly sort your friends alphabetically for quick navigation.
You can access all of your Facebook photo albums in Facebook for Windows 8.1. When you click on a photo – either in one of your photo albums or on your News Feed – it will display at full screen where you can pinch or stretch to zoom in on a photo with your fingers on your tablet. You can Like the photo, leave a comment or tag a person.
You can snap Facebook for Windows 8.1 next to another app and keep it up on your screen while you’re writing emails in the Mail app or reading RSS feeds via Digg Reader in IE11. When snapped on the screen with another app, Facebook for Windows 8.1 will automatically update with new posts.
You will also get toast notifications in Windows 8.1 based on your Facebook notifications while the app is running in the background. Your notification count will show up on your lock screen as well as part of Facebook for Windows 8.1’s live tile on your Start screen.
And Facebook for Windows 8.1 supports the new tile sizes in Windows 8.1 for your Start screen. With a large tile – you’ll see high quality images show up based on your notifications (e.g. if someone leaves a comment on a post of yours, their comment and profile picture show up as part of the live tile).
If you haven’t already updated your Windows 8 device to Windows 8.1 – you should! Then go download Facebook for Windows 8.1. It has become a critical app on my Start screen.

Tip : If you just search Facebook in the store, you will find too many results, making it very difficult to find the official app.
The easiest way to find it is to filter by the newest app and limit the category of apps displayed to social.
The application itself is very similar to the Facebook website, but you will notice a few differences. The most obvious of these are that the menu on the left is always displayed in full, search is displayed on top of it rather than in the center, and that the right sidebar does not display sponsored ads but a list of group chats. and best friends instead. nine0005
You'll find status, photo, and flag tabs at the top for easy access to features, and you'll notice that many of the buttons have grown in size to improve the app's usability on touch devices.
The main question that might come to your mind is this: why would anyone use the Facebook app when they can open the Facebook website instead?
The app is optimized for touch, which is a plus, unlike the Facebook website. There are other benefits as well. The app can run in the background and notify you of updates, while you can't do the same if Facebook is open in your favorite browser.
While you can keep a browser window active all the time, it's not the same as running it in the background. nine0005
In terms of power consumption, a native application may also be more beneficial to your system's battery life, but this needs to be tested in tests first.
You can also share photos posted on Facebook using the Share charm, for example, to attach them to an email you are about to write. Posting to Facebook doesn't seem to work right now, or may not have been implemented yet.
Verdict
If you use Facebook regularly and are running Windows 8.1 on a touch device, installing the official Facebook app is a good idea.
Might be worth a try, even if you're not using touch devices, as it gives you other benefits that you don't get with the website version of Facebook.
Windows 8.1 is finally getting a fair share of apps for popular services, something the operating system has been missing since it launched a year ago.
