How to share a YouTube video on Instagram as a post or Story

Half the fun of hilarious YouTube videos is sharing them. And sure, you could send a link out to your friends. But what about the people who follow you on Instagram? While it might not be an entirely seamless process, this can be down on your iPhone. And chances are, if you’ve found this article, that means you also want to share a video from YouTube to Instagram. Don’t worry. Keep reading this article, and you’ll learn everything you need to know about how to share YouTube videos on Instagram.

Can you share a YouTube video on Instagram?

The short answer is — yes, you can share a YouTube video on Instagram. That said, there is currently no native way to do it, which means you’ll have to download the video to your phone and then upload it to Instagram.

The other thing to remember is that there is a reason YouTube doesn’t have a native feature to help you out. Currently, YouTube doesn’t let the general public download any videos off its website for copyright reasons. That’s why before you re-upload any copyrighted material, you should make sure you have the permission of the person who posted the video. And it’s always a good idea to credit them in your post so that people can go back to the source.

How to post a YouTube video on Instagram as a video post or Story

Taking a YouTube video and posting it on Instagram is a reasonably straightforward process, but it’s still a process. There are three major steps to resharing a video, and hopefully, if you proceed step-by-step, it will be smooth sailing.

Step 1. Download the video from YouTube to your iPhone

YouTube doesn’t allow people to download any videos they didn’t upload. The main reason for this is so that users don’t violate any copyright laws. But according to YouTube’s policy, it is perfectly okay for you to download your own videos. To do that, you’ll need the help of a third-party website. Here are the steps to downloading a YouTube video:

  1. Find the YouTube video you want to download.
  2. Tap the Share button and copy the URL.
  3. Go to YT5s.com
  4. Paste the URL into the search box and tap Search.
  5. Select the quality and click Get link > Download.

The video will then download to your Downloads folder, either on your iPhone or in iCloud, depending on how you have it set up. Either way, you can find the video by going into your Files app.

Step 2. Crop the video for Instagram

The next step is to decide if you’re going to post your video on your Instagram Story or in your feed. Once you have that figured out, you can use the Photos app to help you crop it:

  1. Open the Files app and find the video.
  2. In the bottom-left corner, tap the Share button > Save Video.
  3. Go to the Photos app and open the video.
  4. Tap Edit and select the crop icon (it’s the fourth icon on the bottom).
  5. Next, tap the aspect ratio button in the top-right.
  6. Now you can choose your size. If you’re posting in your feed, you’ll want to use Square. If you’re posting in Stories, you’ll want to choose 9:16.
  7. Tap Done.

Step 3. Upload the video to Instagram

If you want to post the video as a Story, you can follow these steps:

  1. In Instagram, tap the Plus icon at the top > Story.
  2. Tap your Photo Library icon in the bottom left.
  3. Select your video.
  4. Tap either Your Story or Close Friends.

If you want to post the video in your feed, here’s how:

  1. In Instagram, tap the Plus button > Post.
  2. Select your video and tap Next > Next.
  3. Type in your caption and tag people or the location.
  4. Tap Share.

How to post a YouTube video on Instagram Story as a link

Rather than going through the trouble of downloading a YouTube video, you can also just share it as a link in an Instagram Story.

Step 1. Design your Story thumbnail

If you’re someone with over 10,000 followers on Instagram (aka, an Instagram influencer), you’ll have the unique “Swipe-up” feature enabled on your account. That means you can post a Story that will let your followers swipe up to take them to another web page.

One of the things you’ll want to consider is creating an attractive thumbnail to use in your Stories. A couple of tips and tricks for making an image that people swipe up for:

  • Visually appealing: This might seem obvious, but make it look nice! Create an image that gets people to stop in the middle of looking through hundreds of other Stories.
  • Make it clear: When people look at your thumbnail, it should be clear what your video is about.
  • Use text: Write just a little bit to help sell the idea of your video.
  • Have a call to action: You can use animated stickers or just type, “swipe up. ” But the bottom line is, you need to have those two words somewhere on your thumbnail to tell viewers to take action.

Step 2. Post the thumbnail with the YouTube link to Stories

Now that you’ve got your thumbnail sorted out, it’s time to post it to Instagram. All you have to do is follow these steps:

  1. Open Instagram and click + > Story.
  2. Tap the chain icon at the top.
  3. Click URL, paste the link, and tap Done.
  4. Finally, tap either Your Story or Close Friends.

Posting YouTube videos to Instagram does require a bit more effort. But the good news is that it’s not impossible. Hopefully, after reading this article, you feel a little bit more comfortable with understanding how to share a YouTube video to Instagram, whether you’ll be downloading the video or posting it as a link in your Stories. You have multiple options, so all that’s left is to decide what’s best for you and your followers.

In the article, we will describe a new way to add a link to a story, and also share other ways to add links. As a bonus, we will tell you how to create a link sticker in your story so that people click on it more often. nine0007

How to make a link in Instagram Stories: all the ways

For greater clarity, let's introduce a few definitions. All links in stories can be conditionally divided into two types: external and internal .

  • External links lead outside the social network - to a website, YouTube channel, Telegram or WhatsApp. Since recently, all accounts can add external links to stories. Also, they can be added when launching ads. External links are shown as a sticker. nine0030
  • Internal leads to objects inside Instagram: account, post or rils. They can be added both in the form of an external link, and in the form of mentions and reposts.

Important : links are available to all users, not just those with more than 10,000 subscribers. At the same time, new accounts, as well as accounts that have repeatedly violated the Rules of the social network, will not receive access to the sticker with the link. Details of what counts as a new account in this context have not been released. nine0006

By the way, the quality of your subscribers is very important to get the maximum coverage of stories. You need to understand who is watching you, how many% of live people, and how many bots and garbage, so we recommend that you conduct a complete analysis of the Instagram audience, for example, through the InstaHero service. And when you find out who is watching, commenting and liking you, you can start keeping stories tightly. And to increase reach, engagement and activity, you can remove bots from Instagram followers.

External links in stories to a website, YouTube or blog

Let's talk about external links first.

Method number 1: available to all users

How to add a link to the story, we told in our video and further in the text.

To attach a link to a Story, follow a simple algorithm:

  1. Start creating a new story. Add a photo or video from your gallery, or take a photo or short video with your camera.
  2. Click on the sticker icon in the top menu. nine0062
  3. In the window that opens, select the "Link" sticker.
  4. You will see a field for adding a link. Copy the link you want to share and paste it here. This can be a link to a website, a landing page, a separate article or product in an online store, a link to a YouTube channel or video, and even to a Telegram channel.
To check the correctness of the entered url-address, click "Preview".
  5. Add additional elements and labels.
Many users don't know how to follow a link in History. Push them to the target action - add a call to the link on the photo or video to learn something interesting. nine0030

After the link is published, in the Stories statistics, you will see how many clicks were made on the link. To analyze navigation in web analytics systems, use UTM tags or other markup.

Method #2: Advertising in Stories

Adding a link when setting up an ad is a more time-consuming, but also more effective process. To set up ads, you must first go to the Facebook profile associated with your Instagram business account, and click on "Create Ads". Or go directly to the Facebook Ads Manager. nine0007

In your account, click "Create ad" and follow the simple algorithm of actions.

Select the purpose of the advertisement. There are 6 goals available for links in stories, including Traffic, App Installs, Conversions. Choose the appropriate goal depending on the format of the business account and the link being promoted.

Select the campaign objective. Clicks or views can be selected here. That is, you will pay either for clicking on the link, or for visiting the page when the user waits for it to load. nine0007

Set up an account. If you have not created an ad on Facebook before, you will be prompted to specify the time zone, country and currency of the ad account.

Set up audience . Choose the place where the link leads - to the site, application or messenger. Then specify the desired parameters of the target audience: gender, age, interests, and others.

Select the ad space. By default, the ad will be shown on three sites. If you only want Instagram Stories, click on "Edit Placements" and check "Instagram, Stories" only. nine0007

Set a budget and select a bid strategy . You can set a daily budget limit or an amount for the entire campaign, and the system will distribute it evenly. Then choose a bid strategy - by default, the system selects the lowest price. If you want, you can set it manually, to do this, click on "Set a bid limit". The lower it is, the less likely it is that the ad will be shown.

Select the ad format. You can select one image or one video. From a marketing point of view, it is better to use video - despite the fact that advertising has a time limit of 15 seconds, it allows you to better convey the idea to users and add a more prominent call to action. nine0007

After filling in the required fields, a preview will open in front of you. On this page, you can upload images or videos for your ad, add a call to action, add or edit a URL. After saving, your ad will start showing to the target audience according to the selected parameters and the set budget.

Instagram Stories ads are quite short. In addition, after viewing, they are closed automatically, and the user will not be able to view them again. Therefore, add a bright call to action, limited in time - this will increase the conversion. nine0007

Internal link in the story to a post, account or IGTV

Once again, please note that such a link will not be formatted as a swipe in the story, it will be just a mention.

Method #3: link to Reels in the story
  1. Open the Reels you want to share in the story and click on the airplane icon in the menu on the right.
  2. nine0027 Select Add Reels to Your Story.
  3. Add text, stickers and other design elements as you like.
Method #4: link to the story in the post
  1. Open the post you want to share a link to.
  2. Repost a story post: click the airplane icon below it.
  3. Select Add Post to Your Story.
  4. Add text, stickers and other design elements as you like. nine0030
Method number 5: link to the account
  1. Start creating a Story.
  2. Open the sticker panel and select the Mention sticker.
  3. Enter the name of the account you want to link to. Design your story and add other elements as you see fit.
Method #6: link to the video

After combining the IGTV format and the video, the link to the video is published by analogy with the repost of the publication. nine0007

How to create a link sticker in Instagram stories

As you already understood, now instead of swiping in stories, a link sticker will be displayed. Accordingly, the approach to design also changes. Now, instead of a pointer to a swipe, you need to select a link sticker and add a pointer to it or make a highlight. You can do this for free with Canva.

  1. Sign up on canva.com and activate your free 30 day trial ( don't forget to unsubscribe later if you want to use the service for free ).
  2. Select the Instagram Story template.
  3. Add any layout available in the menu on the left and change it to your liking. Or create a layout from scratch.
  4. Add a pointer to the layout. To do this, in the elements section, enter in the search [ here ] or [ here ].
Place the element you like on the layout, in the place where the link will be located (you don't need to add the text Place under the link , as in our example).
  5. Go to the story editor and upload the created layout. Then add the link sticker to the desired location and post the story.

If you're posting a live video, just show your followers what to do and point to the link with a gesture.

For internal links, use the story editor. Add text, arrows, and GIFs to show users where to click to navigate.

Conclusion

Link in Instagram story is another way to work with your audience. For bloggers, this is an additional way to monetize your account. nine0007

How to add a link to YouTube on the video, make and insert and insert on the video, make and insert it on the video from the phone

The most effective way not to lose your subscribers on different blogs and channels is to leave active links for a quick transition. All popular bloggers who run several channels in parallel use this convenient scheme, leaving, if possible, direct links to their resources. We will tell beginners how to add a link to YouTube on Instagram and get all their followers on the video channel. nine0007

Where can I leave a link to YouTube on Instagram? So you need to connect sites with each other, the faster, the more effective the visits will be.

However, not all places on the page can insert a link with an active action for a direct transition. Everyone knows that a clickable link is blue and underlined. If it doesn't, then it won't work. nine0007

There are only two places on Instagram where hyperlinks to other resources are allowed:

  1. In the profile header. The method is popular and accessible to everyone without exception. The active url in the profile header is valid for as long as you need it.
  2. In stories. This vacancy will open to every Instagram owner as soon as the number of followers reaches 10,000 people.

Another option is to share the valid url in a direct message. The recipient will receive not only a direct link for the transition, but will visually see the YouTube icon of the resource to which he will be redirected. nine0007

How to create and add an active link on Instagram

Each owner of popular accounts in social networks can, if necessary, correctly use url addresses and link all profiles together. Professional bloggers call this placement relinking, that is, links send visitors to another resource of the same owner.

First you need to determine exactly what needs to be inserted, it can be a direct link to a YouTube channel or a specific video. If this is a link to a specific video, then it is desirable to shorten it. A short url is much more readable and doesn't take up much space. Free online programs are used to reduce:

  • Is.gd;
  • Bit.do;
  • Bitly.com;
  • Tiny UPL;
  • U.to;
  • Cutt. us;
  • Clck.ru.

Services work extremely simply. Copy the URL from the string, paste it into a specific field, click the "Shortcut" button and you're done.

To your YouTube channel in the profile header

This is the most popular method, as it allows you to use the most prominent place for placing hyperlinks. Follow step by step instructions:

  1. Log in to Instagram on your phone or computer.
  2. We go to our profile, next to the profile picture there is a button "Edit profile", click on it.
  3. In the menu that opens, select the line "Website" and paste the url of your YouTube channel.
  4. At the bottom of the page, click on the "Submit" line.

In the same way, you can place a footnote on Instagram on your YouTube channel. At its core, all social networks of one owner contain identical content and complement each other, keeping subscribers on the channels of one blogger. nine0007

Link to YouTube in the photo caption

Another option that is often used is a hyperlink placed under the public. If a copied URL to a channel or a separate video from YouTube is added to a comment, it loses its activity. The footnote under the post is displayed in plain text and it is not possible to quickly navigate to it.

To use the footnote placed under the post, you must first copy it, then paste it into the search line of the browser. Nothing else. nine0007

Post link to Instagram Stories

Most recently, adding a direct link to a video to Stories was only available to verified Instagram business accounts. Today, this privilege is opened to every ordinary user upon reaching a certain number of followers - 10,000 people. Adding algorithm:

  1. Log in to the application on your mobile gadget.
  2. In the upper left corner, click on the icon to add a new story. nine0030
  3. Choose a picture, a video from the gallery or take an instant photo.
  4. A special icon (chain, links) for adding a url address will appear in the edit field that appears in the upper corner.
  5. Copy the desired URL from the YouTube channel, add it to the field, the icon will react (change color to white).
  6. Publish stories with a simple click on "Next".
  7. Optionally, you can add users as usual.

Important! The active life of the post in stories is 24 hours, exactly as long as the added link will be active. At the end of the time, the link, along with the publication, goes to the archive. The owners of the business page are given the opportunity to place a hyperlink in the eternal story.

Errors - why the link to YouTube is not active

Often users of a new Instagram account cannot figure out how to leave a clickable link on their page. There are several reasons for this behavior of the application that do not allow you to leave a link for your subscribers:

  1. You are placing in the wrong place. If the posting goes in the profile header, then this is one place called "Website", but for some reason many users tend to paste the URL in the "About Me" field.
  2. Sad attempt to paste several direct URLs to different resources at once? And only one link is allowed! If you want to place several at once, we recommend using the Linktree service.
  3. Not often, but still there is such an unpleasant moment when the URLs of the page are copied incorrectly, accidentally cut off. In this case, the link will be inserted, but redirected to an unknown direction.
