Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff.

Instagram Stories are a handy way of sharing fleeting moments from your life without immortalizing them on your feed. But sometimes you might want to shield those ephemeral experiences from certain followers – family, partners, bosses, groups of friends your other groups of friends don’t know about, you name it.

Well, there’s a simple way of picking and choosing who can see your Stories. No, scratch that, there are three simple ways of doing it:

Directly from the Stories menu

The quickest way of doing that is directly from the Stories menu. Indeed, Instagram first introduced this feature two years ago.

  • Once you’ve posted a story, click on the ‘More’ option
  • Select ‘Story Settings’

  • In the ‘Story Settings’ menu, you should see the ‘Hide Story from’ segment
  • If you haven’t used this setting before, it will say ‘0 People’ (the number will depend based on how many people you’ve hidden your stories from)
  • Click on ‘0 People’
  • This should pull up your list of followers as well as a search field where you can filter them by their username

  • Select the people you want to hide your Story from and click the ‘Tick’ sign at the upper right corner
  • Boom! You’re done

A quick heads-up: once you’ve hidden a story from a certain user, your next stories will remain invisible to them until you update your Story Settings.

Hiding Stories from certain profiles

Now, while the previous method works just fine, it only works with people that already follow you. This still leaves your Stories open to random people that come across your profile.

Fortunately, Instagram also lets you hide Stories from profiles that don’t yet follow you.

  • Head to the profile of the person you want to hide your Stories from
  • Click the “Burger” menu in the upper-right corner
  • That should pull up a number of options, including one to ‘Hide Your Story’ from that account

  • Click ‘Hide Your Story’
  • Confirm you want to do so by clicking ‘Hide’
  • Done!

Show your Stories only to a small batch of pre-selected ‘Close Friends’

There’s one more way to hide your Stories from select people: by building a list of ‘Close Friends‘ pre-approved for screening your Stories.

  • Go to your profile and hit the “Burger” menu in the upper-right corner
  • Select ‘Close Friends’
  • This should open a list of suggested contacts you can add as ‘Close Friends’
  • Click the ‘Add’ button to include users in that list

  • When you’re done adding ‘Close Friends,’ head to Stories and chose an image you want to post as usual
  • Post the story by clicking the ‘Close Friends’ button – this will only send that Story to your pre-approved list

  • Done!

That’s it, now you know three different ways to selectively choose who can see your Stories.

And in case you’re getting sick of seeing other people’s Stories – here’s how to block them from appearing on your feed.

Instagram Is Testing A New Feature That’ll Let You Hide Specific Stories From Specific People - Tech Skip to main content

Instagram has been testing a lot of features for its platform. And a new one has been added to the list. Instagram is reportedly testing a new feature that would allow users to hide specific stories from specific people (yes, finally!).

The feature has been spotted by popular researcher and coder, Jane Manchun Wong, who posts regular updates on new features. Wong shared a screenshot on her Twitter account. She revealed that the new feature was spotted in Instagram’s backend. As per the screenshot shared by Wong, there’s a search bar under their stories which will allow users to select the users that they would want to hide their story from.

Currently, you can block people from seeing your stories but this applies across all stories and they won’t be able to see any of the stories pushed by you. With the new feature, you’d be able to block people out from seeing your few specific stories. There aren’t any details yet about whether the feature would actually be launched and we’ll have to wait for that.

Other features that the app is testing out includes the ability for users to restrict or block multiple accounts directly from the comments section. The move is aimed to help deal with cyberbullying over Instagram comments. Similarly, just last month, Wong posted on Twitter regarding a feature that’ll allow users to remove followers directly from their profile. It was spotted by Wong in the backend of the app on an Android device. The feature is already available for iOS users and the company now wants to release it for Android users too.

Wong also tweeted about another feature in mid-feb 2020, that allowed users to check out the latest posts that they might have missed while they were off Instagram.

How to hide a post on Instagram

Some posts, photos or stories need to be hidden from multiple people. Let's consider three cases.

Single user

The way to hide your entries from a specific user is as follows:

  1. Post an entry on the page.
  2. Open settings and navigate to viewing options.
  3. Find the person who is being restricted.
  4. Mark it with a tick and confirm the changes by clicking on the save button.

To all subscribers

To hide Instagram stories from each subscriber, just use the first method: go to settings and close access. To hide content partially:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile.
  2. Call up the additional menu and go to the best friends.
  3. Select the group of users who need access.

Now, when creating new entries, specify access to your best friends. This will hide your content from persons not marked by you in the program settings.

All but one

This is required if you want to leave access to the account only for the best friend or girlfriend. There are two ways to hide Instagram posts from most followers except for one or a few:

  1. In the stories settings, close access by checking the appropriate box, and then uncheck it next to the selected person.
  2. Select a person as a best friend in the system settings and, when publishing a post, share it only with best friends.

Hide your Stories from a specific person

The page owner can hide Instagram Stories from some users: there will be no update notifications or access is completely denied.

The ban can be set in this way:

  • block other users;
  • go to Stories settings: Privacy and security.

In the second case, you can add a group of users or just one visitor.

Instructions on how to hide Stories from the viewer:

  1. Log in to the Instagram application.
  2. Go: Settings - Privacy .
  3. History Options – Hide From – Specify Nickname .

Users who previously viewed Stories will appear in the search bar. Even those that appeared once. Enter a nickname, check the box - a blue icon will appear next to the line.

Or - temporarily block publications for display. You need to go to the user page and click on the top three dots. A list will appear with the item " Hide My Stories ". Works if this person is subscribed.

How to hide only one story

You can't hide a post separately, but you can create a second account to post there. In this case, other users, subscribers will not be able to view the photo or video. Now, only subscribers will be able to view Stories.

To use the second option:

  1. Log out of your profile - Register .
  2. After the registration and confirmation procedure, subscribe to the second profile.
  3. Settings - Best friends .
  4. Add a second page to the list.

You can hide individual Stories using "Archive", but if automatic saving is specified and the photo has been available for 24 hours. The "Archive of Stories" section saves publications that were posted earlier.

You can re-show them in pinned Stories by going to the edit category of Relevant. If you open access again and publish in pinned - the photo will not disappear after 24 hours.

How to block access to your Instagram posts for an unwanted subscriber

To block someone's account, go to his page and, by pressing the "Options" button in the upper right corner of the display, you will be taken to the list of available actions. Select "Block". From now on, the unwanted subscriber will lose access to all your posts.

A person will not be able to determine that he was blocked, unless he tries to go to your page. In this case, he will not see a single publication, but only the inscription: "There are no photos or videos yet."

Is it possible to make your publications invisible to strangers? In Insta, this is possible if you put your page in private mode, make it private.

How to send a photo via Direct

The private messages section will open. Here you can create a chat (conversation) for your favorites. Chatik will appear when you press the "+" (it is on the top right), and select the interlocutors from the list of your subscribers.

To write to one person, even if you are not subscribed to him, go to his profile menu and select "Send message". After that, a new conversation will appear on the Yandex.Direct page. The process of sending photos in Direct is described in detail in a special article.

How to hide other people's stories on Instagram

If you don't want the stories of a certain person to be shown at the top of the Instagram feed without unfollowing them, you can hide them.

To do this, open the Instagram app on your smartphone and navigate to your feed. Tap and hold on the avatar of the user whose stories you want to hide. A small menu will appear where you need to select "Switch to silent mode."

In the next window, tap "Hide History".

You have hidden other people's stories, now they will be at the end of the story feed. When updating, they will not be highlighted and will no longer open during automatic viewing of stories.

Please note that hiding stories is not the same as unfollowing a person, so you will follow him and see his posts in the feed as before.

To allow the display of other people's stories again, repeat the same steps and select: "Unblock story".

How to hide your stories and why to do it

By default, your stories are in the public domain, any visitor can go to your page and see the publications. If you have a closed account activated, then only subscribers and friends can view the content.
