WhatsApp tips and tricks: How to recover all old/deleted WhatsApp chats

Earlier this week we had provided a simple trick to read deleted WhatsApp messages. WhastApp has no official feature that lets you read messages that have been deleted but via third party app called WhatsRemoved+ it is possible for you to read all deleted WhatsApp messages.

Oftentimes, mainly while switching to a new smartphone, we lose old WhatsApp texts, media files and that can be very disappointing for some. Today we will discuss a simple way so no one ever loses their WhatsApp chats no matter how old they are.

We all know that WhatsApp backs up chats every day. For the unaware, WhatsApp creates a backup of all chats at 2AM in the morning by default unless you have changed the setting manually.

Note: If the daily backup is getting too much you can always change the auto chat backup setting and select the option that best suits your requirement. The options available are: Daily, Monthly, Weekly, and OFF. If you choose OFF option, you will never be able to get access to old chats if switched to a new phone.

You will first need to ensure that the chat backup option of your WhatsApp account is set to Daily. This option makes the process smoother as it keeps a backup of your chats on a regular basis and make it easy to recover it whenever required.

We mostly need to recover deleted WhatsApp messages while switching to a new smartphone or deleting the WhatsApp account.

* Click on the Restore option and all your old/deleted WhatsApp messages will be restored on your new smartphone.

Note: You must ensure that any message received after the backup time can’t be restored.

If you are not moving to a new phone but have mistakenly deleted some WhatsApp chats and want to restore it back you can simply uninstall the WhatsApp app and reinstall it and follow the aforementioned process.

While restoring you must ensure to connect the phone to a stable WiFi network so the restore process doesn’t consume all your mobile data.

Much like brands, apps are in a fierce battle to claim some coveted space on your mobile phone, vying for your affection and memory space. Among the many choices for gaming, messaging, social media, education, videos and so much more, there is an app that many of us are familiar with: WhatsApp.

However, right now the most pressing is that the need for space has led you to remove some messages from WhatsApp you didn't really intend to and now you won't have a way to recover those deleted text messages. Course you could have lost the message for the following reasons too:

  • Accidental deletion - While technology is great and easy, it's just as easy to suddenly lose something you meant to keep, like some messages that you've been saving.
  • Transferring woes - This is rather rare but it still happens, when you upgrade to a new Android phone, you could be overwriting or leaving behind some messages on your WhatsApp.
  • Reformatting - Much like transferring, it's almost like you are transferring to a brand new phone! Only it's the same phone, but just wiped off pretty much everything else.
  • Broken Android - A busted phone is nothing to be ashamed of, but at the end of the day is, you need your messages one way or another and a broken phone is stopping you from doing that. Or is it?

At this point in time, you are wondering is it at all possible to recover the messages on your WhatsApp? The truth of the matter is, despite being deleted or removed from your phone, and this does not only pertain to your WhatsApp messages but to all the other details such as messages, contact numbers, call logs and so forth, this information will still be somewhere on your phone just not accessible right away. Thankfully, there are a couple of options to make sure that you somehow get the missing data back onto your Android phone.

How to recover deleted WhatsApp chats

Quick ways through backups or third party software.

How to restore chats on Android

From a Google Drive backup

You can fully restore deleted WhatsApp chats from Google Drive only if you first activate the backup function. To do this, in the application settings, you need to go along the path "Chats" → "Backup of chats", and then set the frequency of creating a backup: daily, weekly or monthly.

The backup will only be stored on the Google account that originally started the backup. To restore correspondence, you need to use the same phone number to which your account in the messenger is registered.

  1. Install or reinstall WhatsApp. Open the app and verify your phone number.
  2. Confirm the request to restore chats and media files from the Google Drive copy.
  3. When the process is complete, click Next.
  4. If there were media files in the backup, the application will continue to restore them in the background after the chats are returned.

From a local backup

Your device stores local backup files from the last week. To recover deleted messages, you need to transfer these entries to the folder with the WhatsApp chat database using a file manager.

  1. Start the file manager on your smartphone.
  2. The files you need are located in the local storage or on the SD card. To find them, follow the path Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp. This folder contains three directories: Backups, Databases, and Media. Migrate content from Backups to Databases.
  3. Reinstall and open WhatsApp. Verify your phone number.
  4. The application will offer to restore chats and media files from a local backup if it does not find a backup in Google Drive. Click Restore.

With a specialized application

There are a large number of WhatsApp data recovery tools. For example, Tenorshare UltData, Wondershare MobileTrans, iMyFone D-Back and similar programs. They should pull up deleted chats and other information both from the smartphone’s memory and from backups.

Almost all apps require a subscription to enable WhatsApp data recovery. At the same time, they do not have extraordinary algorithms for rolling back deleted files. For example, the mobile version of the UltData for Android application uses the same reserves as the messenger itself. Therefore, it is not worth placing high hopes on such programs. But you can use one of these PC utilities if other methods have not worked.

In most cases the sequence is very similar:

  1. Connect your smartphone to your computer with a cable and open the recovery program.
  2. On the main screen, select Restore WhatsApp Data or similar.
  3. Put the device into USB debugging mode. The application will display the appropriate instructions.
  4. After connecting your smartphone, proceed to the next step by clicking the Next or Start button. Most often, at this point, a window appears with a description of paid features and a call to purchase. Pay for a subscription or one-time cost.
  5. Next, the program may offer to make a copy of the data just in case.
  6. The application will search and after a few minutes will display a list of found chats. Check all the ones you need and click "Restore".
  7. Select a location to save data on the device.

How to restore chats on iOS

From an iCloud backup

You can use auto-save to iCloud to back up and restore your chat history. As in the case of Android, you must first activate the backup in the WhatsApp settings.

You can only start recovery with the same Apple ID that you use with iCloud. At the same time, the amount of free space in the cloud and in the memory of your device must be at least twice the size of the backup.

  1. Make sure you backed up your chats in iCloud. To do this, follow the path WhatsApp → "Settings" → "Chats" → "Backup". The date and time of the last save should be entered here.
  2. Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
  3. After verifying your phone number, follow the instructions on the screen to restore your chat history.

Using third party software

For iOS, there are versions of the same software as for Android. All of them require payment, but they do not give guarantees for the full restoration of correspondence. Rather, it's just a more convenient way to selectively search for backups in local storage or the cloud than the full processing of all chats saved in iCloud.

If you decide to use this method, the procedure is almost the same as with Android.

How to restore WhatsApp chat history on Android and iOS

If you have deleted WhatsApp conversations, you can restore them in a few steps. We tell you what you can do on an iPhone and an Android smartphone.

In the article, we consider proven methods of information recovery. Click on the link to go directly to the point of interest.

  • With third party software
  • Using Google
  • From backup
  • Not tied to Google
  • On iPhone via iCloud

Restoring chat using third-party software

One of the reliable and easy ways to restore information in WhatsApp is to use third-party software. But it often requires rooting, and rooting a smartphone is quite risky (read why). Therefore, it is worth looking for programs that can work with standard firmware. For example, Tenorshare UltData.

The program works simply: you need to run it and click the "Restore WhatsApp Data" button.

Then connect the smartphone to the computer with a cable. Before doing this, it is advisable to make a backup copy of messages - just in case.

Although root rights are not required, you need to open access to the developer menu. This is safe (if you do not change the parameters manually). Usually you need to go along the path "Settings> System> About phone" and press your finger on "Build number" until a message appears about entering the mode.

If you haven't created a backup, the program will prompt you to do it yourself. After a few steps, you will see deleted messages and pictures - you can restore them by clicking on the appropriate button.

In the same way, you can restore correspondence on iPhone / iPad, including using a backup copy on iCloud. To do this, you will need to download Ultdata iOS.

How to restore your WhatsApp history with Google

Perhaps the easiest way to save your WhatsApp history is to automatically create a cloud backup. All you need is a Google account and access to Google Drive. If you haven't linked the cloud to WhatsApp yet, follow these steps:

  • Open WhatsApp and select "Settings" by clicking on the three dots in the top right corner.
  • Now select "Chats" - "Backup Chats".
  • In the Google Account section, enter your Google Drive account.
  • Also in the settings you can set how parts will be backed up to the cloud: monthly, weekly, daily, when you click the "Backup" button or never.
  • You can also set whether to download backups only when you are within Wi-Fi coverage or via mobile data.

Now in case of loss of data or smartphone, you can easily reinstall WhatsApp and start recovery via Google Drive. To do this, follow the recovery instructions when setting up WhatsApp.

Restoring WhatsApp chat history on Android

If you have deleted some or all of your chat history, you can quickly restore it.

Delete WhatsApp from your smartphone. When reinstalling, click the "Restore" option. The latest backup copy of the messenger data will be loaded. However, do not forget that messages received or sent during the current day will not be completely restored.

If you have not linked a Google account to create a backup, you have a second option. To do this, the correspondence should not be older than 7 days - any message deleted before that will not be restored.
