How to Delete a Highlight on Instagram in 2 Ways

Whether it's an individual photo or the entire collection, it's easy to delete your Instagram highlights.

Highlights are a great way to organize your temporary stories so they are always visible on your account profile page. However, you may wish to update them as time goes on. To do so, first tap to view a highlight collection and then choose "More" options to delete an individual post or edit the collection.

In the edit page, you can uncheck multiple photos or videos you've uploaded to your curated highlights. If you uncheck all of them, you'll be prompted with a message confirming you wish to delete the whole thing.

How to delete a highlight on Instagram individually or by collection

1. Head to your profile page in the Instagram app and tap on the highlight you'd like to delete. Highlights are found in the space below your follower numbers and bio.

2. Tap through until you find the highlight photo or video you'd like to remove.

3. Tap the three dots for the "More" option in the bottom right hand corner.

4. Tap "Remove from Highlight" to remove just that one item.

5. This will open a pop-up. Tap the red "Remove" option to remove that item.

6. From the "More" menu, you can also tap "Edit Highlight" to make additional changes. 

7. This will open a details page where you can view all of the stories you've selected for the highlight. (If you tap the "Stories" tab you can see others to add.)

8. Uncheck the selected items you wish to remove. This will change the blue check marks to empty circles.

9. Tap "Done" to complete the process of deleting multiple highlight stories at once.

10. Uncheck all of the selected items if you wish to remove the entire highlight. When you tap "Done," it will prompt a pop-up confirming you wish to delete. Tap the red "Delete" option to complete the process.

It’s been said time and time again that social media usually only shows someone’s highlight reel. Even the most candid of photo dumps was curated from a not-so-glamorous camera roll, and even the most seemingly-spontaneous Instagram story was probably preceded by someone telling their friend, “Wait, do that again. I wanna take a video.” But few spheres of Instagram embody this best-of energy quite like one’s Instagram highlights. Often picked from the cream of the crop of one’s stories, Instagram highlights are a way for users to display a selection of their favorite stories on their profile. Many have even organized their stories into folders with aesthetically pleasing icons and titles like “travel photos,” “my besties,” etc. It’s very much a “best foot forward” way of giving new followers a glimpse of your best stories.

But, no matter how curated your Instagram highlights may be, there might come a time when they start to feel less like a highlight reel and more like your bloopers. Say, for instance, that highlight folder from you and your S/O’s vacation that now has aged like milk post-breakup.

If there’s a certain highlight folder you don’t want pinned to your profile for all to see, you’re not eternally tied to these selections. Here is everything you need to know about deleting Instagram highlights.

How To Delete Instagram Highlights

First, you’ll want to head to your profile tab on Instagram. Find the highlight reel you want to delete entirely, or delete individual stories from, and long-press on it.

If you want to delete an entire highlight folder, all you need to do next is press “Delete Highlight” from the pop-up menu. However, if there are certain stories from this highlight that you’re hoping to cut out of the selection, then click “Edit Highlight.” From here, you’ll be taken to a screen that shows the thumbnails of all of the stories in your highlights under a tab labeled “Selected.” Find the story, or multiple stories, that you wish to delete, and just tap on them to remove the check mark from their thumbnail. Press “Done” in the top right corner, and your updated highlight will reflect these changes.

If there are multiple highlight folders that you wish to delete, or multiple stories within separate highlight folders, then just rinse and repeat. Soon, your profile will be squeaky clean of any undesirable story highlights.

How To Restore An Instagram Highlight That You Deleted

If you accidentally deleted a highlight without meaning to — or, better yet, you and your S/O got back together and now you’re ready to re-launch that romantic vacation highlight — it’s pretty easy to restore a highlight.

If you want to restore a deleted story to your highlight, you can just add it back into your highlight folder in the same way you’d add a new story into the folder. To do this, hold down on the folder, click “Edit Highlight,” select “Stories” next to the default “Selected” tab, scroll back to the story, and select it. As long as you didn’t delete the story from your archive, you’ll be able to recover it to your highlight folder.

If you accidentally deleted an entire highlights folder, well, good luck, Charlie. Just kidding. The process for recovering this is still possibly, just slightly more grueling. Essentially, you will just need to recreate the entire folder like you would while creating a new highlight folder. To do so, click the “New” option with a plus (+) sign icon to the right of your highlight folders. Then, select the stories from your archive that you want to put in the highlight folder. Click “Next,” and type in your title and select your cover photo.

Phew. Just like new.

How to delete messages on Instagram

Deleting individual messages

You can delete individual messages on Instagram. The operation is available from the phone and computer. To delete SMS, you need to go to Direct, enter the dialogue. Your phone must be connected to the internet for the changes to be saved.

Important. On Instagram, you can selectively delete only your own messages. Received SMS will be saved. There are no tools to remove them.

Option 1: On the phone

You can delete messages using your phone. The operation does not take much time and does not require the installation of additional applications. The steps are the same on devices with different operating systems, such as Android and iOS.

How to delete SMS via phone:

  1. Open Instagram.
  2. Swipe the display from right to left to go to Direct.
  3. Find the dialogue in the list and go to it.
  4. Select your message to be deleted.
  5. Press the SMS box for 2 seconds.
  6. In the window that opens, click on the line "Cancel sending a message" .
  7. Press Cancel Send to confirm.

The selected message will be deleted immediately. It will be impossible to restore it. nine0003

Important. Only sent SMS can be deleted. When highlighting received messages, Instagram offers "Report" and "Copy text".

Option 2: From a computer

You can clear the SMS list via a computer. To access Direct, use the mobile version of Instagram installed through an emulator, the official app, or an extension for Google Chrome. The online version does not have access to the chat with messages, so you won't be able to delete them. nine0003

How to delete SMS using PC:

  1. Open Instagram, log in to your personal account.
  2. Switch to Direct by clicking the button at the top of the window.
  3. Select a contact.
  4. Move the cursor over the message, hold down the mouse button for at least two seconds.
  5. A window with options will open.
  6. Press the button "Cancel sending".
  7. The message will disappear instantly for both the recipient and the sender.

Important. In Instagram, you can only delete your own SMS. When selecting a received message using a PC, the Complain and Cancel buttons are available in the options window.

Delete an entire conversation

You can delete an entire conversation on Instagram. To do this, you need to enter Direct and perform a couple of clicks.

A deleted conversation cannot be recovered. You can erase the entire dialogue using a computer and a mobile phone.

Option 1: On phone

To delete an unnecessary dialogue on Instagram on your phone, you need to follow a few simple steps. Even an inexperienced user can handle the operation, you just need to follow the instructions:

  1. Log in to Instagram.
  2. Open Direct by swiping across the screen.
  3. Select an unnecessary dialog from the list.
  4. Press the dialogue for at least two seconds.
  5. In the window that opens, tap "Delete" .

Instagram cannot select multiple dialogs at the same time. To delete all unnecessary correspondence, you will have to select the dialogs one by one and press the button "Delete" . If an error occurs during operation, check your Internet connection or restart your phone.

Important. Deleted conversations cannot be recovered. Before cleaning, copy text from important messages.

Option 2: From a computer

  1. Launch the BlueStacks emulator, click on the application icon.
  2. Open Direct.
  3. Hover over unwanted chat.
  4. Press and hold the mouse button for at least two seconds.
  5. Press the button "Delete" .

You can only delete the entire dialog using the Android emulator. Through the browser extension, you can delete sent messages, but you won’t be able to call the menu to delete the entire dialogue. nine0003

Send messages that disappear

Instagram has a built-in option to send messages that automatically disappear after viewing. A photo is required to submit.

How to send a disappearing message:

  1. Open the integrated Direct chat.
  2. Press the camera button.
  3. Take a photo or select a photo from the phone memory.
  4. Write a message, apply filters.
  5. Press button "Recipients" .
  6. Press the button "Send" , next to the desired person.

The recipient will receive a new SMS notification. The sent message will disappear automatically immediately after viewing. You do not have to delete such SMS yourself.
