Supercharge your Reels strategy with these must-know hacks.

Published February 1, 2022

Creating Reels for your brand or business can be one of the best ways to get more followers and engagement on Instagram — in fact, they’re a real growth hack right now!

From useful tips to our top editing tricks, we’re sharing our favorite Instagram Reels hacks that are guaranteed to make your videos stand out from the crowd.

Discover our top creative hacks by watching this video — or continue reading the full blog post below.

Instagram Reels Hack #1: Create Creative Original Content

If you want to show up on the Instagram Reels tab, creating original content is key.

With thousands — even millions — of creators sharing to Instagram Reels daily, thinking of original ideas is one tall order.

Fortunately, you don’t have to totally reinvent the wheel when it comes to planning your Instagram Reels. The main thing is to create content that is educational or entertaining — with your own unique twist.

By adding your own little spin or perspective, you can take any existing idea and create something fresh and engaging.

For example, if you’re a photographer, this could be a series of camera setting hacks, lust-worthy locations, or your favorite portrait shots like @myparisportraits:

Instagram has confirmed it prioritizes videos that aren’t visibly recycled from third-party apps, so creating original content in the Reels editor could also help boost your visibility.

Creating original content may take a bit of time and effort, but it’s one of the best ways to hack the algorithm and set yourself apart in your niche.

Instagram Reels Hack #2: Include On-screen Text and Closed Captions

We know 85% of video on Facebook is watched without sound, so adding on-screen text and subtitles to your videos is a no-brainer when it comes to reaching more users.

Plus, not only are subtitles great for people who watch without sound, but they’re invaluable for those with hearing difficulties.

To add video subtitles you can use Instagram's closed caption sticker.

Tap on the sticker icon and select "Captions."

It may take a few seconds for the audio to transcribe. Once they've pulled through, you can go through and edit the text to make sure it's all correct.

TIP: Make sure your closed captions are visible in every part of the Instagram app by positioning them in the center of your screen (more on this later).

Instagram Reels Hack #3: Avoid the TikTok Watermark

Instagram has confirmed that they deprioritize Reels that are visibly recycled from other apps — meaning they’re less likely to appear in the Instagram Explore Page and the Reels tab.

With this in mind, the best strategy is to create content directly in Instagram and TikTok – even if you use the same raw footage (from your Camera Roll) across both apps.

If all else fails, you can use a watermark removal app to remove the TikTok watermark from you video – but know that third-party apps can compromise quality.

Instagram Reels Hack

#4: Drive Traffic by Encouraging Viewers to Head to Your Link in Bio

The best way to drive traffic from Reels is by including a clear call-to-action (CTA) that encourages people to head to your link in bio.

This could be with on-screen text placement, a verbal call-out, in your video caption, or all of the above. You can use a link in bio tool, like Later's Linkin.bio, to create a mini landing page with multiple link buttons and clickable images:

This is a great way of getting more value from your link in bio, and it only takes a few minutes to set up.

Make the most of your Instagram link in bio with Linkin.bio by Later — get started today.

Instagram Reels Hack #5: Hop on Trends Fast

Similar to TikTok, Reels come and go quite quickly.

To hop on a trend before it becomes old news, take a few minutes each morning to scroll through the Instagram Reels tab and other creators’ profiles to see what they’re sharing.

Is there anything that seems to consistently pop up — a particular song? An audio clip? A dance trend?

If so, click on the music to see how many other creators have used the audio. Scroll through the videos to get an idea of what the trend is.

Or, bookmark this Reels trends resource updated weekly.

Instagram Reels Hack #6: Share Your Reels to Your Feed

In case you didn’t know, sharing Reels to your Instagram feed is one of the best ways to boost their views and increase their chances of going viral.

So with this in mind, make sure you opt to share your Reels directly to your Instagram feed.

Otherwise, there’s a chance your Reel will go unseen by your community.

If you’re worried about ruining your Instagram aesthetic, you can upload an Instagram Reel cover image so it fits in nicely with the rest of your content.

Plus, you can always decide to remove the Reel from your feed at a later date. If you want to see how your Instagram Reels cover photo will look on your feed, check out this handy Later hack:

Instagram Reels Hack #7: Optimize On-screen Text Placement

Whether you’re adding closed captions or additional text, where you put the on-screen text is extremely important.

If your audience can’t easily see the text, they’re likely to scroll right past your video — which can be a major engagement blocker.

When adding text, make sure it’s within 4:5 dimensions, especially if you’re sharing it to your feed.

This way, when a user clicks on your Reel in-feed, the text will be visible.

While this doesn’t sound like a big deal, carefully curating your text placement makes it a much more enjoyable experience for your audience.

Instagram Reels Hack #8: Find Your Niche and Post Consistently

One of the best ways to gain virality on Instagram Reels is by finding your niche and posting consistently.

There are so many Instagram users with a wide range of interests and hobbies. No matter what your brand or business does, there’s a niche for you!

If you’re a skincare brand, you could product tips tips like @glowrecipe. And if you’re a bakery, you could go behind-the-scenes in the kitchen like @jennaraecakes:

And even if your first few Reels don’t garner a ton of traction or engagement, keep going! Just like anything else on social media, it’s all about trial and error.

Stay consistent by planning ahead of time and scheduling your Reels.

Instagram Reels Hack #9: Provide Value and Share Educational Content

If you thought Reels were only for the latest dance trends, think again. There are tons of creators going viral by sharing informative content.

Creating educational content provides a valuable service for your audience, and helps position you as an expert on a certain topic.

Jera Foster Fell does a great job at this. She has cemented herself as a social media marketing expert by consistently sharing tips, tricks, and behind-the-scenes content for her entrepreneurial community.

Instagram Reels Hack #10: Include 3-5 Hashtags

Including 3-5 hashtags can be a great way to help the Instagram algorithm “understand” your content and serve it to relevant audiences.

For example, using hashtags like #easyrecipes, #mealideas and #dinnerinspiration will indicate to the Instagram Reels algorithm that your content is about food — which may increase the likelihood of it being served to users who are actively engaging with similar content.

Plus, now that Instagram has rolled out keyword search in several countries, users searching for related topics will be able to discover your content:

Instagram Reels Hack #11: Use Music from the Instagram Library or Create Your Own Audio

Using music from the Instagram music library or creating your own original audio is one of Instagram’s top tips for getting your Instagram Reel seen by more users.

Finding the right music for your video can be a challenge, but luckily Instagram has a hefty Instagram music library to choose from.

You can browse music curated just for you, trending songs, categories, or use the search bar to find a specific song.

Having trouble accessing Instagram’s music library? Check out our blog post: How to Add Music in Instagram Stories.

Instagram Reels Hack #12: Share to Your Instagram Story

Last but not least, remember to share your Instagram Reels to your Instagram Stories.

If you’re looking to increase your reach, it’s a good idea to share your Reel in as many places as possible.

Plus, you can always cover part of your Instagram Reel with a GIF or image (like below) to encourage your audience to click and watch the full video.

Creating Instagram Reels is one of the best tactics to grow your following right now.

With these top 12 tips, you’ll set yourself apart from the competition, build a niche, and reach new audiences.

Instagram video highlights

Instagram followers tend to scroll through the feed rather quickly and lose interest in content just as quickly. Your subscriber in the first three seconds should understand that in front of him is not just a picture, but a video. These first seconds are critical in order to interest the subscriber, catch his attention and involve him in watching the entire video. And, perhaps, even encourage you to watch the video with the sound turned on. But you should be aware that your video should be understandable without sound. To do this, use interactive elements, emoji or animations, visual transitions, frames offered by SUPA. nine0005

In the first 10 seconds of the video clip, the main idea of the video must be clear to the user, otherwise he will lose interest. Your video should be bright and dynamic. Try to create it in such a way that it differs from the usual advertising that the user is already used to.

Video ads in the feed are a very organic way to advertise your business/brand. Ads fit naturally into the content and user-consumed information. It seems to fit into his usual routine of scrolling through the Instagram feed. nine0005

Instagram video ad requirements

Instagram allows you to add MP4 and MOV videos. There are also a number of resolution and duration requirements.

Vertical video

Resolution: 600 x 750.

Aspect ratio: 4:5.

Maximum size and length: 4 GB / 120 seconds.

Landscape video

Resolution: 600 x 315.

Aspect ratio: 1:91:1.

Maximum size and length: 4 GB / 120 seconds.

Square video

Resolution: 600 x 600.

Aspect ratio: 1:1.

Maximum size and length: 4 GB / 120 seconds.

The most optimal for video advertising in this social network is still a square video. Vertical can unprofitably "shift" comments and likes. As for the duration of 120 seconds, please note that in order for the user to see the entire video, he must select the “continue watching video” option. nine0005

Read more about Instagram video formats here. If, in addition to video ads, you also want to create videos for stories, then here is a cheat sheet with the requirements for them.

Instructions for setting up ads on Instagram

Creating a video that meets all the requirements of Instagram is an important task. But it is equally important to properly set up an advertising account so that advertising brings customers and sales.

Initially, all promotion on the Instagram network was tied to the Facebook Ads Manager advertising account. Now the social network has decided to allow creating ads on Instagram even without an FB account. This option will become available soon to business accounts, however, it will only be available to those who have not previously promoted their posts on Instagram. nine0005

For those companies that have been using the advertising opportunities of one of the most popular sites for a long time, the algorithm for setting up Instagram ads remains the same:

  • Log in to your Facebook Ads Manager and click the "Create" button.
  • Select the purpose of your ad (Awareness, Consideration or Conversion).
  • Select the target audience by age, geographic location, gender, age, interests, behavior, occupation, or applications they use. nine0052
  • Select the ad format that suits you (in this case, video).
  • Upload the highest resolution video created in SUPA without black bars on the sides, or select a promotional post that you previously shared on Instagram.
  • Optionally add a short description below the video (the first two lines will be displayed).
  • Set the budget and duration of the advertising campaign.
  • Post an ad and wait for your ad campaign to be approved (this may take a few hours or a whole day). nine0052

Blog content about

what it is, how to create and what to shoot

In 2020, Instagram announced a new feature - Reels. It works in countries where Instagram music is available. With the help of Reels create short creative videos. This is an analogue of TikTok, where it is also possible to add music from a large database, apply effects and mount everything right in the application.

Where to find Reels

Click on the Play button, which is located in the center of the bottom menu. You will see the Reels feed, which contains videos of other users. nine0005

When you post your first video, a separate tab will appear. As long as the blogger does not have Reels in their account, this tab will not exist either.

What you need to know about Reels

When TikTok gained popularity, everyone wrote about how easy it is to get followers on this platform. At the same time, Instagram complained that it was necessary to pay the site for displaying posts even among subscribers. Now Reels is the TikTok of the past couple of years. It's less likely to wake up popular the day after a viral video is posted, but right now it's a good channel to get free followers and account attention. nine0005

Here's what it says about Reels' display in the official Instagram summary:

Some more important facts:

  • Users can shoot or upload videos up to 60 seconds long.
  • The Reels feed algorithm doesn't rely solely on your Instagram following. It takes into account your interest in specific topics.
  • The entire database of effects, presets and masks is available in Reels, just like in stories.
  • Popular Reels videos also show up on the Explore page. nine0052
  • Reels has a large database of audio tracks, it is possible to upload your own tracks and sounds.
  • Every user with an open account can share their Reels with other Instagram users. If you post a video to the feed, subscribers will see it.
  • Reels videos are divided into tags: hashtags, music, effects. When you click , you can see all videos with this tag. For example, if you click on an audio track, you'll see all the videos that use it. nine0052
  • If the profile is private, the platform will take into account the privacy settings - only your subscribers will see the video. No one will be able to use your video and audio.

More details can be found in the SMM courses.

How to create Reels on Instagram

There are 4 ways to open the Reels editor:

  • From the Instagram home screen.
  • On the profile page.
  • In the Reels tab.
  • In camera for Stories. nine0052

Let's go from the profile page. To do this, click the "+" in the upper right corner and select "Video Reels". The video editor will open.

When creating Reels, you can choose between shooting a new video clip (Play icon in the center) or loading a pre-made file from the camera album (a square with a plus in the corner): in one frame. You can also mix recorded and downloaded clips. In total, the duration of all parts cannot exceed 60 seconds. If you upload a longer video, it will automatically be cut off. nine0005

There are eight basic functions on the main screen. Of these, 6 on the side menu:

  • audio;
  • duration;
  • speed;
  • effects;
  • retouching;
  • timer.

And two on top:

  • flash;
  • night mode.

First things first.

  • Audio. Here you can add music for Reels. When clicked, the music library will open. Here you can find audio tracks: trending, recommended and categories. Some songs may not be available for business profiles. nine0052

You can also use audio tracks from other users' Reels. Click on the line with music, and then "Use audio track."

Instead of music, you can also use your own sound recording.

  • Duration. Videos can be limited to 15, 30, or 60 seconds. Instagram won't force you to shoot videos to the exact second - it's just a handy feature to help you figure out the length of the video. nine0052
  • Speed. The function allows you to speed up and slow down the video, helps you get into the rhythm of a song or record a slow motion video. You cannot change the speed of the added video, the function is only for videos that are shot in the application.
  • Effects. Here you can add all filters, masks, 3D objects and interactive AR content from the same library as you have in Stories, trending, to change the appearance, etc.

  • Retouch. Smoothes the skin. To change the intensity, drag the slider up/down. nine0052
  • Timer. Helps when there is no way to hold down the button to record. You can set the countdown to 3 or 10 seconds. You can also limit the shooting time using this function. The countdown comes with sound - convenient.

  • Flash. When pressed, the flashlight will turn on. If you are shooting in selfie mode, the screen will increase the brightness to the maximum and illuminate the face.
  • Night mode. The icon appears in poor lighting conditions. If the month is crossed out - the picture will be darker, if not crossed out - lighter. nine0052

If you want to trim or delete any of the footage you've taken or added, click the back arrow to the right of the record button. Click on the passage you want to edit. When you have selected an excerpt, click on the scissors to cut it, or on the wastebasket to delete it.

Preview/edit functionality

Once you have selected or captured a video, you can add stickers, effects, text, and draw or overlay text tools, Instagram stickers are available. nine0005

  • Underline Arrow - Download Reels to your device. If you want to download ready-made Reels with music from the library to your phone, then it will be saved without sound
  • Note - select music, adjust audio. You can adjust the volume of audio from the camera and the volume of audio from the library:

  • Microphone - sound recording for video, "voiceover". Handy if you're telling a story or reviewing a product. If you're shooting a video with voice-overs or dialogue, don't forget to add subtitles to your video. This is useful when your video is being watched without sound. nine0052
  • Asterisks - apply an effect. In Reels, masks can be applied even to already captured videos:

  • Sticker - add GIF, time, temperature.
  • Arc — draw over the video.
  • Text - Overlay text on the video. For overlay, in contrast to stories, this is a detailed functionality. Text can be superimposed on a specific segment of the video. The editor will show all pieces of text as translucent, so that you can understand where and in what gaps to place the following parts of the text. nine0052

When adding text to a video, consider its position. When you share Reel on your Instagram feed, it crops it to a 4:5 aspect ratio. To avoid cutting off important text, place it close to the center of the screen.

When you're done, you can edit the title picture with a thumbnail or add cover art from the camera album. If you want to keep the Instagram aesthetic, upload a brand-appropriate picture from the camera album.

You can add or not add a video to the subscriber's feed at your discretion. If you remove the “Also share in the feed” option, Instagram will show the video to random users.

When posting in the feed, the post can be removed from the main page of the account, leaving it only in the Reels section. To do this, click on the three dots and select "Remove from Profile Grid".

How to view Reels statistics

Statistics are available both in the Insights tab and for individual Reels. To see the effectiveness of a particular Reels, open the video, click on the three dots and click on the “Statistics” item. Metrics are standard: coverage, views, comments, likes, saves, reposts. nine0005
