Do you have a great Instagram post or Reel you want more people to see? Are you looking to boost engagement on your existing posts? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then it might be time to promote your posts and Reels. Instagram promotion (a.k.a. Instagram boosting) is a great way to get your content in front of more people and rake in those precious likes, comments, and shares.

In this post, we’ll give you some tips on how to promote Instagram posts for maximum reach and impact. Plus, some top-secret industry tips you won’t get anywhere else.

Let’s get started!

What is Instagram promotion (a.k.a. Instagram boost)?

Instagram promotion is the act of paying to have your post seen by more people. When you promote or “boost” a post on Instagram, it will appear in the feeds of users who don’t follow you. Promoted posts can also appear in the Stories or the Explore tab.

Instagram boosts and promoted posts are a type of Instagram advertising. You’ll have the ability to target your audience by interest, location, and more.

The benefit of promoting your post is that you can reach a larger audience and get more engagement on your posts, which can lead to more followers.

Promoted Instagram posts also give you insights into how well your content is performing and who is seeing it, beyond just your regular audience.

How to promote an Instagram post

To promote or boost an Instagram post, you’ll need to have an active Instagram Professional account. Once you have that setup, follow these steps. (And also watch our video, below!)

1. Go to your Instagram Feed and click the post you want to boost. Then, click Boost. Keep in mind, Instagram recommends only boosting posts with images smaller than 8 MB to ensure the best quality.

2. Next, fill in details about your ad like the Goal, Audience, Budget, and Duration. The goal is the results you hope to see from this ad while the audience is who you want to reach with your message. The budget is how much you’re willing to spend on this ad per day. The duration is how long you want your ad to run.

3. Once you finish these steps, click Next. If you haven’t already connected your Instagram account to a Facebook Page, you’ll be prompted to do that now. Choose an existing account or click Skip to move on.

4. Complete your boosted post by clicking Boost post under Review.

From there, your ad will be submitted to Instagram for review and begin running once it’s approved!

Bonus: You can also boost Instagram Reels with a few clicks using Hootsuite. Watch our video below where we go over how you can promote your Instagram Reels:

Instagram post promotion cost

One of the biggest benefits of IG promotion is that the cost is completely up to you. Promoted posts can cost as little as $0.50 per click, and you can set a daily budget so you never spend more than you’re comfortable with.

If you’re unsure what kind of budget to use for your promoted post, try setting up a draft campaign in your Instagram Ads Manager. Here, you’ll be able to see Audience Definition and Estimated Daily Results metrics which will give you an idea of whether your budget settings will be sufficient to reach your target audience.

Benefits of promoting an Instagram post

Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms with over 1 billion monthly active users. Of those users, 90% follow business accounts, which gives you an opportunity to reach a highly motivated audience.

On top of that, Instagram has high engagement rates with posts averaging around 1.94%. By contrast, Facebook and Twitter have engagement rates of 0.07% and 0.18%.

Promoting your content on Instagram can help you reach a larger audience, get more engagement, and encourage people to take action on your posts.

There are a few reasons you might want to promote an Instagram post:

  • To increase brand awareness: If you’re trying to reach new people who are likely to be interested in your products or services, promoting a post is a great way to do that.
  • To get more engagement: Promoted posts can help you get more likes, comments, and shares, which can lead to organic reach and new followers.
  • To drive traffic to your website: If you’re promoting a post with a link to your website, you can track how many people are clicking through to your site. Promoted posts can also lead to more sales or sign-ups.
  • To reach your target audience effectively: Instagram’s targeting lets you choose who sees your promoted post. You can target by location, age, gender, interests, and more to better reach more interested customers.
  • To collect data on marketing strategies: Every boosted post will come with data on how well it performed. You can use these metrics to see what’s working and adjust your strategies accordingly.

5 tips for Instagram post promotion

It’s easy to promote Instagram posts to get your content in front of more people. But as with any paid promotion, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure you’re getting the most out of your investment.

Here are a few tips for promoting Instagram posts.

1. Use Instagram-specific features

While Instagram made its name as a photo-sharing app, today it’s so much more. Promote Instagram posts using all of the platform’s features, from Stories to Reels to Live.

The more you make use of Instagram’s features, the more chances you have of ranking in its algorithm. Not only will this help you reach more people, but it will also help you build a more engaged following.

Bonus: Download a free checklist that reveals the exact steps a fitness influencer used to grow from 0 to 600,000+ followers on Instagram with no budget and no expensive gear.

2. Think about your target audience

One of the benefits of boosting Instagram posts is that you already have a built-in audience. But that doesn’t mean you should take them for granted.

Before you promote your Instagram post, take a step back and think about who you’re trying to reach.

  • Who are you speaking to?
  • What are their interests?
  • What kind of content do they respond to?

If you don’t know the answer to these questions off the bat, try digging into your Instagram analytics to see how your previous posts were received. If you notice your Reels get the highest engagement or that carousel posts have the most shares, promote those first.

Your Hootsuite dashboard contains all the information you need to tailor your promoted Instagram posts to your audience. Use Hootsuite Analytics to figure out what time of day to promote your post and measure the impact after its live.

3. Promote carousel posts

Research has shown that carousel posts increase engagement rates on Instagram. Static carousel posts can boost engagement by as much as 5%! Add a video to that carousel, and you’re looking at an almost 17% increase.

To make the most of this format, try creating a carousel post of 8-10 images or video clips. On the first slide, ask your audience a question or include a powerful call to action. This will entice users to swipe left to see the rest of your content.

Don’t forget, you can create Instagram carousel ads quickly and easily with Hootsuite! Plus, track, optimize, and grow your Instagram presence directly from your dashboard.

4. Make use of product tags

If you’re set up for Instagram Shopping, you can promote Instagram posts that feature product tags. Doing this will drive people directly to a product details page on Instagram, where they can learn more about the product and make a purchase.

This is an especially effective way to promote your products if you’re running a promotion. Promote Instagram posts with product tags to let your audience know that there’s a special deal going on, and make it easy for them to take advantage of it.

5. Promote your best posts

Image and video quality is an important part of the Instagram user experience—and it’s also a major ranking factor in the Instagram algorithm.

That means, if you want your content to be seen by more people, you need to make sure that the images and videos you’re promoting are high quality. Promoting your best posts will ensure that, not only is your audience seeing your best content but that it’s well-received.

When you’re looking for posts to promote, consider the following:

  • The quality of the image or video
  • The engagement (likes, comments, shares)
  • The overall reach (how many people saw it)

Pick your best posts and share them with the world!

How Often To Post On Social Media: 2022 Success Guide

Wondering how often to post on social media?

Great question. The short answer is, “As often as you can consistently post quality content.”

Quality and consistency are key to social media success.

This has not changed for 2022, and I don’t expect it to ever change!

But you want more… you want tips and suggestions! A place to start.

We got it.

The longer answer is: Recent studies have shown that there really are optimal posting frequencies for the different social media platforms.

And the good news is, it’s probably not as often as you may have heard!

That Facebook Page posting hourly, or Twitter account posting every 15 minutes? Forgetaboutit.

Maybe it works for accounts with 100,000’s of followers, but it doesn’t work for the average business using social media marketing.

Whew!

We will cover:

  • How often to post on Facebook
  • How often to post on TikTok
  • How often to tweet on Twitter
  • How often to pin on Pinterest (updated for 2022)
  • How often to post on Instagram
  • How often to post on LinkedIn
  • How often to upload to YouTube

Pinterest has changed! What you were doing in 2020 may no longer be working. It certainly wasn’t for me!

You’ll find everything summed up on a colorful infographic at the end, PLUS a free content guide to keep your social media posts engaging!

Is how often you post on social media important?

YOU BET! As Neil Patel says,

If you post too infrequently, your audience will forget that you exist and you will quickly fade into the deep dark recesses of their minds. However, if you are posting too often, you will become a complete nuisance and they will dread seeing your posts overcrowding their feed.

So here’s what the research says, to help you get this right.

I share my own posting frequency. Don’t try to max out every platform – unless you have unlimited time or funds. Or use a magical scheduling tool, like Missinglettr, mentioned below (my secret weapon!).

Disclosure: Some links below are affiliate links, which means I’ll get a small commission if you purchase. I only recommend social media management tools I use and love!

How Often to Post on Facebook

Most studies agree that once per day is optimal, with a maximum of two posts per day.

Hubspot found that pages under 10,000 fans experienced a 50% drop in engagement per post if they posted more than once per day.

At a minimum, you should post to your Facebook Pages 3 times per week.

As far as when to post to Facebook, I keep seeing studies that tout early afternoon. That’s never worked for me. It may be that more people are online and sharing then, but I think that just means I’m lost in the crowd.

I find it best to post before 6:30am Pacific, or after 8:30pm. I post 2–3 times per week.

When your audience is online will determine when you should post. Be sure to check your Facebook Insights.

For engaging, viral content scheduled in a snap, you should try PromoRepublic. You can edit and add your branding to their clever, pre-made content – or just post it as-is!

PromoRepublic also schedules to Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, but the content is most needed on a platform like Facebook, where users are looking to connect and have fun.

Disclosure: I’ll get a referral fee if you purchase a plan.

So, how often should you update your Facebook Page?

Bare minimum: once a week. Better: 3 times a week. Optimal: once a day.

Avoid: Sharing a bunch of posts in quick succession. Allow at least 3 hours between posts. “Too many updates” is the #1 reason people unfollow Fan Pages.

Action points:

1 | Get some Facebook content ideas and plan a week or month’s worth of posts.

2 | Discover the best time to post on Facebook 2022.

3 | Schedule your Facebook posts for free.

4 | Or find ready-made content and schedule it in PromoRepublic.

How Often to Post on TikTok

TikTok is the new kid on the block. I didn’t find any studies – but I did find plenty of TikTokers willing to share what’s working for them.

What’s great is they generally agree!

You should really try to publish at least one quality video per day.

Most users have found that 3 per day is optimal!

While I’ve seen some suggest that more than 4 or 5 would be too much, at least one popular TikToker disagrees.

With 1.3 million followers, Grant Beene says, ““There is no such thing as posting too much on TikTok.”

He says that every time you post, TikTok shows your content to different people. Which may or may not be true, because (let’s face it) the social platforms don’t reveal the intricacies of their algorithms.

It does appear that, unlike Facebook, TikTok doesn’t penalize you for posting a lot.

Still, if you have less that a million followers (like, a lot less lol) and something else to do with your day than hang out on TikTok, there likely is such a thing as posting too much.

But if you’ve got the time, please test it and let us know. 🙂

Here are a bunch of TikTok video ideas to get you started.

So, how often should you post to TikTok?

Bare minimum: several times a week – once a day.

Optimal: 3 times per day.

Action points:

1 | Not a TikToker yet? Learn how to make your first TikTok video!

2 | To increase your chances of going viral, be sure to add the best hashtags for TikTok and the best TikTok captions.

3 | Learn the best time to post on TikTok 2022.

How Often to Post on Twitter

This seems to be a big controversy these days! I was recently taken to task for “only” posting about 10 times a day on Twitter. The top accounts are posting 100 times a day, I was told.

Can you imagine?

Well, that’s just not necessary. But the studies I found did vary wildly – anywhere from once per day to 51 times a day!

More helpful is a general consensus of 3 to 30 times a day. Tweets do have an incredibly short shelf life, so it’s important to spread your tweets through the day.

If you blog, you’ll adore using Missinglettr to automatically create visual content and schedule your blog posts.

How often should you Tweet?

Bare minimum: once a day. Better: 3 – 6 tweets a day. Optimal: 15-23 tweets a day.

In addition to HubSpots’s findings, Dan Zarella found that the most-followed Twitter accounts averaged 23 tweets a day, with no decline in followers as tweet counts rose. When I was most active on Twitter, I tweeted links almost every hour, and a quote about every 3 hours.

Avoid: Disappearing from Twitter for weeks or months – you’ll lose followers.

Action points:

1 | Learn the right image size for tweets.

2 | Discover the best time to tweet.

3 | Try Missinglettr to schedule new blog posts to tweet out on different days and times for a whole year. The Twitter feed moves so quickly, you’ll be lucky if your followers see it once, let alone multiple times!

How Often to Post on Pinterest

The recommended minimum is 3 Pins per day, with a maximum of 25 Pins per day – a new recommendation direct from Pinterest.

Pinning often is easy with Tailwind. You tell it how many times you want to pin per day, and it sets up recommended time slots for you.

Save a Pin to Tailwind, and it falls into the next slot (or you can customize the times, if you wish).

I started with about 5 Pins per day and worked my way up to about 12 scheduled Pins a day in 2016.

Posting this often did amazing things to grow my followers – I more than tripled my account in 2016, to 14K followers. And…

  • Added 5,000 followers in 2017.
  • Almost 10,000 more in 2018.
  • Close to 20,000 more in 2019.

But I no longer Pin that much!

Why? After encouraging up to repin our own content for years, in 2019 Pinterest decided to give preference to NEW Pins.

Rarely giving exposure to repinned Pins.

Requiring lots of time to create NEW Pins!

I drastically cut back on my repeating Pins in late 2019 and am once again pinning only about 5 Pins per day.

If you can’t keep with the new content creation, cut back on pinning.

I cut from 30+ a day to FIVE with NO loss in engagement, follower growth, or traffic.

This is why you have to keep up with the social platforms’ ever-changing whims!

And especially, your account analytics.

I’m a huge fan of automating everything Pinterest with Tailwind. And their analytics are the best, bar none. So you’ll always know how your account is doing, and what to tweak.

• • • Try Tailwind Forever Free plan now! • • •

Disclosure: I’ll get a referral fee if you purchase a plan.

So, how often should you Pin to Pinterest?

Bare minimum: once a day. Better: 3 – 5 Pins a day. Optimal: 10-25 Pins a day.

The optimal amount for your account will depend on how much time you have to dedicate to making fresh, quality Pins. 3 “fresh Pins” will perform better than 25 repeated Pins.

Avoid: Repeating Pins frequently or to more than 10 Pinterest boards.

Action points:

1 | Catch up on the current Pinterest best practices.

2 | Learn how to make Pinterest Pins that get seen and clicked.

3 | Determine your best times to pin on Pinterest.

4 | Or, make it easy. To schedule your Pins, try Tailwind.

How Often to Post on Instagram

It’s generally recommended to post at least once per day, and no more than 3 times per day, on Instagram.

I’ve found similar times of day to Facebook effective: my stats showed that 8pm was my best time, closely followed by 6am. This was when I lived on the West coast, so that’d be 9am and 11pm Eastern time.

I don’t use any schedulers here, but you can read about approved partners for Instagram scheduling. These can auto-post for you safely!

How often should you update your Instagram?

Bare minimum: once a week. Better: 3 times a week. Optimal: once or twice a day.

Avoid: Sharing a bunch of posts in quick succession, or disappearing for weeks at a time.

Action points:

1 | Get some Instagram post ideas and plan a week’s worth of posts.

2 | Consider the best Instagram image sizes.

3 | Pick an effective group of Instagram hashtags to increase your posts’ exposure.

4 | Figure out the best time to post to Instagram 2022.

How Often to Post on LinkedIn

This one’s easy. At least twice a week, and no more than once each business day, which is optimal. Post in the mornings.

I share my new or updated blog posts here, and I was only posting once or twice a week, but now I use Missinglettr. This recirculates my blog posts and keeps them in front of my connections – because some may have missed them (or not had time to read) previously.

How Often to Post on YouTube

Once again, consistency is key.

According to Filmora, you’ll grow your channel faster if you:

  1. Create a specific YouTube posting schedule.
  2. Post your upload schedule on your YouTube account.
  3. Don’t overcommit! Creating YouTube videos takes time.
  4. “Bank” YouTube videos so you have them ready to upload on your schedule.

I was asked for more specifics, so here you go: Try to upload a new video weekly.

If you create a stash of videos as recommended above, you’ll get an idea of how long your video creation will take, and if that’s a realistic goal.

Don’t abandon YouTube because you can’t post weekly, and don’t post junky videos just to get something uploaded.

I know it sounds like a broken record, but it’s really all about consistency, quality, and what works for your audience.

Here are some fantastic tips on posting frequency from Business Film Booth.

I jumped you right to that part of the video, but the whole thing contains important advice.

How often you should post a video to YouTube depends on a whole heap of things. There is not a set answer. This video will talk you through everything you need to consider before you produce one video a week, day or month.

The best times to upload to YouTube are Thursdays and Fridays between 12 and 3pm in the time zone of the majority of your subscribers.

Monday and Tuesday are the worst days to upload to YouTube.

How Often Should You Blog?

Some quick thoughts here, since blogging is sometimes lumped in with “social media.”

Bare minimum: once a month. Once weekly is ideal, and if you can post two or three times a week – even better.

If you’re new to blogging, more content will definitely move you up in the search rankings. Established blogs with plenty of content should focus less on how much new content they can create, and more on updating and optimizing their current content.

Avoid: Posting low quality content to meet a “quota.” Publishing a ton of blog posts when you have time to write, and none when you get busy. Consistency will help the search engines – and your readers! – know what to expect. But be sure it’s quality.

Action points:

1 | Choose a comfortable frequency you know you can keep up with.

2 | Learn some SEO basics for beginners.

3 | Start writing, and get a few posts scheduled in advance.

4 | When – and if – you can, increase your posting frequency.

5 | Once you have a library of content, be sure to keep it updated.

Conclusion: How often should business post on social media?

Now you’ve got the latest research on:

  • How often to post on Facebook
  • How often to tweet on Twitter
  • How often to pin on Pinterest
  • How often to post on Instagram
  • How often to post on LinkedIn
  • How often to upload to YouTube

Hat tip to CoSchedule, Buffer, and Neil Patel for data.

Here are more considerations from Amy Landino!

I included my own thoughts and frequencies, and suggested scheduling tools.

→ PromoRepublic if you need fast, viral content for Facebook.

→ To automate blog post sharing, Missinglettr.

Choose your pace and stick to it, so your followers know what to expect. Consistency is key to attracting and retaining followers! Of course, high quality content is a must.

Posting more does not mean your content will be seen more!

Different social networks’ algorithms work differently, but engagement and relevance is key to all!

Here’s a great overview from Brafton, with stats from Social Media Today:

  • Facebook ranks meaningful interactions highest.
  • Instagram’s algorithm orders content by popularity, relevancy and a user’s relationship with the account that posted it.
  • Tweets are sorted by time posted and relevance to the user.
  • LinkedIn content is ranked by engagement and the degree to which you are connected with someone on LinkedIn or have mutual connections.
  • Pinterest places content based on previous user interactions.

Don’t forget these key points on how often to post on social media:

  • Posting consistency is more important than posting frequency.
  • Content quality is more important than content quantity.
  • Set an objective for social media, so you know if your posts are successful or not.
  • And always check your stats to see what works best for your account!

It’s not just how often you post, but posting quality content your audience craves.

What does the “Promote” button mean and how does it work

If you need a quick launch of an advertising campaign, then promotion of an Instagram post is exactly what you need. The "Promote" button below the posts will appear when you switch to a professional account: a business profile or an author account.

What does the "Promote" button mean? When you click on the "Promote" button, an advertisement is automatically created with the selected post. This function can also be called, raise a post or bring a post to the TOP, because it will be shown one of the first in the feed.

The button looks like this :

How does it work? This feature allows you to create and run ads through Instagram without using Facebook Ads Manager.

At the same time, promotion will not be available for some posts, in this case the “Promote” button will be displayed, but will be inactive.

How to promote a post on Instagram: step by step guide

Step 1:

Choosing what to promote

Decide what problem you need to solve with the promotion of the post and what would be the best solution. Here are 3 types of content that can be promoted:

  • regular post with photo - suitable in most cases;
  • video - if you want to get coverage;
  • gallery - for the presentation of several products.

If the goal is to attract customers, prepare a sales post for Instagram, if the goal is to get feedback, then make an engaging post. After selecting a publication, open it and click the "Promote" button below.

Tip: Prepare your promotional publication in advance. Use an image that catches the eye easily or post a photo with a caption.

The most important thing in the text is the first line. This is what the user sees when scrolling through the feed. Try to interest from the very beginning, and end with a call to action: leave a comment, go to the site, register.

Step 2:

Select the promotion goal

Next, you need to select the promotion goal: site visits, profile transitions, or Direct messages. Let's choose "More site visits" - suitable if your main sales go through the site. To set the desired address, click edit and specify the desired URL.

Select the action that suits your ad campaign. If you want to attract new subscribers, then we select transitions to the profile. If you need more contact with customers - messages. If advertising is the first stage in an auto funnel, then send traffic to a lead magnet or give a checklist as a gift.

Step 3:

Action Button

Different call to action buttons will be displayed depending on the target of the ad post:

  • The "More profile visits" target is the "Go to profile" button.
  • The More Posts target is the Write to Direct button.

For the button that will accompany the advertising publication leading to the site, you can change the label on the button. Available options: Learn more, Shop, View more, Contact us, Book and Register .

When choosing an action button, rely on what you are promoting. For events and online services, the "Register" button is suitable, for hotels, cafes and restaurants - "Book".

Step 4:

Create an audience

You can leave automatic audience selection, select a previously created audience or an audience for retargeting, or set it up manually. Consider the last option - click "Create your audience".

We come up with a name for the audience and set up targeting: location, interests, age and gender.

To properly target, first create a portrait of your target audience.

Step 5.

Budget and duration

To begin with, it is worth setting a small budget for a short promotion period.

To change the budget and duration of an advertising campaign, simply move the slider left or right. At the same time, you will be shown the approximate coverage that you will receive.

Step 6:

Checking the publication

At the final step, see how the promotional publication will look in the feed - the "Publication Preview" button. Check if all options are set correctly.

Here we set up payment. Click "Payment", a section opens where we replenish the advertising budget from an already linked card or add a new one.

Finally, click "Promote Post". The advertisement will go to moderation, upon completion of which you will receive a corresponding notification. How long does it take for a post to be reviewed? Usually results come within a day.

Advertising publication statistics

To view statistics on the promotion of a publication on Instagram, go to the advertising publication - click "View promotion" and then "View statistics".

Since our advertising campaign has not been launched yet, there are zero indicators here. When the statistics data is updated, it will be possible to calculate the cost of a click, the cost of one application or registration.

Instagram post promotion via Facebook

In the same way, you can set up promotion of an Instagram post via Facebook. If we compare this method with the method described above, then setting up through Ads Manager gives more options. For example, launching a promotion from a computer and more accurate targeting.

We will not describe the whole process in detail, we already have a corresponding article: Setting up advertising on Instagram through Facebook. Start setting it up.

Next, when creating a creative, you need to select "Use an existing publication".

Then click the "Select a post" button

In the window that opens, switch to the "Instagram" tab and select the post that we will promote.

After selecting the publication, you will need to select the action button and provide a link to the site (if selected as the goal).

At the end, click "Publish" and the advertisement goes to moderation.

If the “Promote” button on Instagram does not work or there is no permission for advertising, then ...

There may be several reasons:

  • No administrator access to the Facebook page linked to the Instagram account. Solution: ask the page owner to give you admin rights;
  • account is not linked to a Facebook page;
  • Facebook glitches. On the territory of the Russian Federation, the Facebook advertising account in conjunction with Instagram does not always work stably, so the problem with the “Promote” button can literally arise out of the blue. Solution: from a business profile, go to a personal profile, and then connect the business account again;
  • there is no "Promote" button - you have not switched to a professional account;
  • If none of the above helps , but you need to run ads from your phone, install the free Facebook Ads Manager app and run ads from it.
  • Conclusion

So, I hope this manual was useful. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments.
