It’s a question that elicits a lot of conflicting opinions from social media managers, creators, and solopreneurs alike. 

So, as a leading social media scheduling and management platform, we took matters (AKA data!) into our own hands and analyzed over 22M Instagram feed posts (images, videos, carousels, and Reels). 

Here’s what we found.

Does Posting Frequency on Instagram Really Matter? 

Short answer: yes.  

While “consistency” is the buzzword du jour, being consistent on Instagram is a great way to grow on the app. 

“The more consistent your posts, the more your audience will get to know you — which in turn builds trust. They’ll also know what to expect from you, giving them a reason to follow and engage with your content,” says Later’s Social Media Manager, Christine Colling.

But it has to be manageable.

Rather than posting just to post, be more strategic and consider what’s achievable for you (or your team). 

“Consistency doesn’t have to mean posting every single day. Set your own pace and create a reasonable schedule — even if it means starting with just one or two posts a week,” adds Christine.  

Plus, not every post type is created equal.

How Often Should You Post on Instagram Every Week in 2023? 

After analyzing over 22M Instagram feed posts from January 1, 2022 to October 12, 2022, we found that users with:

  • Nano accounts (0-10K followers) post an average of 3 feed posts per week 

  • Micro accounts (10K-100K followers) post an average of 3 feed posts per week 

  • Mid accounts (100K-500K followers) post an average of 5 feed posts per week 

How does that stack up against Instagram’s recommendations? 

In June 2021, Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, suggested posting, “a couple feed posts a week, and a couple stories a day. ” 

Yes, that advice is a little vague, but remember: one size doesn't fit all.

As for Later’s social team?

With over 470K Instagram followers, we post an average of 10 feed posts a week (around 1-2 a day).

But how often should you post for optimal engagement and reach by post type — for example, how many Reels a week? How many carousels? 

Keep reading, we’re breaking down all the data below. 

How Often You Should Post on Instagram in 2023 for Reach & Engagement — According to Post Type

Depending on your specific Instagram goals, your post type could be the ticket to increased reach, engagement, or a combination of both. 

Reach rate is a valuable indicator of your exposure, while engagement rate can indicate how well your content resonates with your community.  

Based on our analysis, here’s how often you should post on Instagram — for optimal reach and engagement — according to post type: 

How Often Nano Accounts Should Post on Instagram— According to Post Type 

According to our analysis, Nano accounts (0-10K followers) see the highest average engagement rates with Reels.

1 Reel = an average engagement rate of 3.95%. 

And if you’ve got even more time (and resources) on your hands, posting 14 Reels = an average engagement rate of 4.73%.

However, carousel posts get a ton of engagement too. Posting just 1 carousel a week = an average engagement rate of 3.36%: 

When it comes to reach rate, posting more Reels reigns supreme:

How Often Micro Accounts Should Post on Instagram — According to Post Type 

Micro accounts (10K-100K followers) tend to see high average engagement rates with Reels and videos.

If you want to go big, 20 Reels = an average engagement rate of 2.99% — the highest of all post types.

In comparison, 1 Reel = an average engagement rate of 1.05%.

But carousel posts come in strong too! Posting anywhere from 1-5 carousels a week can see an average engagement rate of 0.9% or higher:

How Often Mid Accounts Should Post on Instagram — According to Post Type 

Mid accounts have between 100K-500K followers, so it comes as no surprise that their engagement rates are lower than their Nano and Micro counterparts.

However, a healthy mix of Reels and carousels — for example, 5 of each a week — can see an average engagement rate over 0.74%:

So, How Often Should You Really Post a Week on Instagram?

If you want to reach new audiences, posting more Reels — paired with an effective hashtag and keyword strategy — is always a good idea.

However, if engagement is the name of the game, consider using a variety of post types — carousel posts and single images have decent engagement rates too. 

But most importantly, try not to get caught up in the numbers — creating quality content trumps quantity. 

Instead, use this data as a starting point to gather insights and experiment with your own account to find what works best.

However, to make it easier for you to figure out a suitable Instagram posting schedule for your business or personal account, I've compiled some general guidelines and statistics from different industry reports on how often to post on Instagram and when.

Instagram Posts Per Day: On Average

On average, businesses post 4 posts per week across all industries, which is equivalent to publishing 0.57 posts per day for good engagement.

More popular accounts can consider posting twice a day. But anything beyond that will most likely decrease the engagement levels on your individual posts.

The optimal number for how many Instagram posts per day will also vary based on the type of content formats you use. And, it’s always better to include all different formats offered by the app in your Instagram posting strategy.

Why?

Because image posts do well with hashtags, Reels have their own feed, Carousels help you drive more conversions, and Lives let you collaborate with others. Instagram Stories are great at generating engagement and are easier to create.

Every different format you use increases your chances to engage more Instagram users.

If you want to increase your brand awareness and get more people to see your content, you should publish more posts. Whereas, to generate more engagement per post, you should not share too many posts.

Posting too much content on Instagram may lead to:

The Best Times to Post on Instagram

Now that I've shared the different guidelines on how many Instagram posts per day you should be publishing, let's talk a little about when you should be sharing your content.

Based on findings from various research reports, I’ve curated this data about the best times to post on Instagram each day of the week. You may use it as your baseline and then experiment a bit to find the sweet spots for your Instagram account.

How Are Hashtags Related to the Optimal Number of Posts Per Day on Instagram?

Instagram allows you to add up to 30 hashtags to each of your posts. However, most experts recommend that you put relevance over quantity. That being said, the optimal number of hashtags to use on Instagram is 10.7 (or 11) per post.

Why 11?

The reasoning behind this number is that it allows you to reach the maximum number of people without coming across as spammy. Some marketers also suggest that you use only 3-7 hashtags that are highly relevant to your post and niche.

Now imagine posting any more than two times a day. How many hashtags will you use altogether if you post thrice or more?

You guessed it – a ton!

This is where things can start to look spammy real quick.

And that’s why I recommend that you stick to a maximum of two posts per day if you want to avoid looking like a spammy account.

Of course, this all depends on how often you post quality content as well.

If you only post 2-3 times a week, then 2 posts in one day won’t look as bad. But if you’re posting multiple times a day and all days of the week, then using too many hashtags will cause people to view your account as spammy.

So, to recap, it's best that you use a maximum of 11 hashtags per post and you post 1-2 times per day.

If you are constantly posting new content, it can be overwhelming for your followers and they may start to unfollow you. Additionally, if you are only posting content that is promotional or self-serving, your followers may get tired of seeing it and will also unfollow you.

It's important to mix up the content you post on Instagram and to make sure that each of your posts is providing real value to your followers. If you can do this, then posting 3 times a day shouldn't be a problem.

However, 1-2 posts per day work great for most people, so if you're not sure what to do, start there and see how it goes.

If you've been looking for the secret formula to find the exact answer to this question, we're going to have to disappoint you: best practices vary by industry and company type. Much depends on the preferences of your audience.

Only one thing is universal - you need to study your subscribers and find out how often they want to see you in their feed. Below you will find recommendations from marketers, most of whom have been blogging on Instagram for more than three years (>40% of respondents), which means they have had enough time to test different strategies and find out which ones work best.

Daily posts

Some companies benefit from publishing new posts every day. This may depend on your goals, or whether you work in B2B or B2C, or what other channels you use to promote your products or services.

If Instagram is your main social media platform for finding new potential buyers, then according to experts, posting every day can be especially beneficial for your company.

There are three reasons for this:

1. Instagram algorithms might reward you

You may have heard complaints about Instagram's algorithms: if you take a moment to distract yourself, your audience reach shrinks. While it's not true that all activity on an app is tracked by a single algorithm, frequent and regular posts do get more attention.

John Frigo of Best Price Nutrition says, "Instagram's algorithms, and indeed most social media, reward frequent posts, so it's best to post daily."

2. Increase visibility

Many companies benefit from publishing one post each day. Marketing experts believe that this frequency of posts is optimal: they do not overload the audience and at the same time do not let you be forgotten.

Only 10% of survey participants have an audience between 25,000 and 50,000 subscribers, the majority (more than 30%) have less than 1,000. In order to attract more, increase visibility and expand your reach, it can be beneficial for you to post every day.

This frequency of posting helps to attract the attention of new followers: “Instagram is a very visual platform. Therefore, to get the most out of it, you need visuals that represent your company so that customers and potential buyers can see you all the time.”

Harriet Chen of CocoFinder also believes that daily posts increase visibility on Instagram. It can be useful to post even a few posts a day: “Experts believe that you need to post new posts every day. But for maximum engagement, you need three posts a day. This frequency increases the visibility of your brand and helps boost sales of your products.”

3. You keep the attention and interest of the audience

Daily posts give engaged audiences exactly what they want. If your followers enjoy interacting with brands, posting daily will help keep them engaged and allow followers to enjoy new content all the time so they don't lose interest.

“For years, we have been experimenting with post frequency and choosing the best strategies for our business Instagram account,” says Jonathan Ofrey of Growth Hackers Agency. "We've found that daily posts work best because by providing content regularly, we keep engagement without overwhelming our community."

Chloe Sisson of Zen Media agrees that posting more than once a day can overwhelm subscribers unless the posts are related to each other. “If Instagram is your main marketing tool, it is recommended to post once a day. Set a specific time for this so your followers know when to expect your content. We post once a day. We have found that this frequency works best for our audience.”

Posting 3-5 times a week

What if you can't post every day? Or, for example, is your audience dissatisfied with an overabundance of content? Do not worry. Some experts recommend posting once or twice a week, as well as posting on weekdays rather than weekends.

Once again, it all depends on your audience. If your target followers commute during the week and spend the weekend with their family without looking at their phones, you'll schedule your schedule so your best posts don't go unnoticed.

The majority of survey participants (more than 30%) name an engagement rate of 1-3%, and this is good for Instagram. The majority of those surveyed only post a few times a week because such a schedule increases engagement. The audience has more time to explore the content and interact with it.

2. Ability to improvise

Sometimes something unexpected happens that you want to tell subscribers about. If your schedule calls for two or three posts a week, you can always cram in an announcement or post something impulsively without overwhelming your audience.

A strict schedule also robs your profile of authenticity. Authenticity is important because people want to get to know you, feel your energy, and see if you're the right fit for them. People want to talk to people, not robots.

What if you post a post a day and have nothing prepared for today? Will you post anything just to stay on schedule? Frequency is important, but not enough to post irrelevant content.

Dennis Hancock of Mountain Valley MD thinks you shouldn't post just to tick off a plan. The best practice is to “post often enough for your audience to remember your brand, and if your posts are engaging, Instagram will reward you with a wider audience reach. Posting once a day is good if you share something important. No need to post irrelevant or weak content.”

Charlotte Spence of Mattress Nerd says, “Posting 3 times a day is annoying for most users and will quickly lead to unfollowing. Make a schedule and post anywhere from 5 posts per week to 2 posts per day, but only if you're sharing high quality content. Create your posts ahead of time when you have a good idea, and if you don't have a good post ready, don't post anything. Better to remain silent than to post irrelevant content."
