How to Make WhatsApp Video or Voice Calls on Mac & PC

A lot of WhatsApp users make use of the desktop client to stay connected and respond to text messages while they’re using their computers. And the latest versions of WhatsApp can also make video calls and voice calls as well, right from a Mac or Windows PC by using the desktop app.

Video calling is considered as an essential feature nowadays as a lot of people use it for organizing classes, online meetings, family gatherings, and more. Sure, it’s super convenient to make video calls on your iPhone using WhatsApp, but in a professional work environment, you’d ideally want to use a fixed webcam that’s connected to your computer. Most social networking apps allow users to make video calls on the desktop, and now WhatsApp includes the capability as well.

If you’re interested in making WhatsApp voice and video calls from a Windows PC or MacOS computer, read along!

The voice and video calling options are only available in the desktop app and not the WhatsApp web client. So, make sure you’ve installed WhatsApp Desktop on your PC or Mac first before you go ahead with these steps:

  1. Launch WhatsApp desktop on your computer, link your account using your phone and set up the client.

  2. Once you’re in the app, select the message thread or open a new chat and then click on the video or phone icon at the top of the chat.

  3. This will bring up a tiny call interface at the top-right corner of your screen. Here, you’ll see the progress of your call and options to mute your mic, end the call, and even switch between voice and video. To access even more options, you can click on the triple-dot icon.

  4. Now, you’ll have the options to change the microphone and webcam used by WhatsApp which can be helpful if you have multiple peripherals connected to your computer.

  5. As for group calls, you cannot do that directly in WhatsApp. However, you’ll be prompted to create a Messenger Room instead. To get started with this, click on the triple-dot icon in the main menu of the app located right above the search bar.

  6. Now, choose the “Create a room” option from the context menu to continue.

  7. When you get the prompt, click on “Continue in Messenger” which will open up a web page in your browser. Log in with your Facebook account and you’ll be able to set up a Messenger Room. You can learn about creating Messenger Rooms right here.

That’s pretty much all there is to it. Pretty straightforward, isn’t it? This is the same regardless of whether you’re on a Mac or Windows PC.

You no longer need to resort to other services like FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, etc. just to make video calls and organize meetings on your computer. Considering tons of people use WhatsApp already, this might be the easiest way to stay connected through video calling.

Apart from being able to make phone calls, you’ll be able to convenient accept all your WhatsApp calls using your computer. From now on, whenever you’re working on your laptop or desktop PC, you don’t have to go grab your iPhone every time you get a WhatsApp phone call.

Of course, if you aren’t impressed with the interface or you have privacy concerns, you have other popular options with multi-platform support too, like Telegram for example. Just like WhatsApp, Telegram offers a desktop app which you can use to make video and voice calls too. Signal Messenger is yet another great option for privacy buffs, but you can also make video calls with WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Skype, and of course FaceTime too.

Hopefully, you’re able to get a hang of WhatsApp’s desktop call interface pretty quickly. What’s your favorite thing about the desktop app? Were you using WhatsApp Web until now? Feel free to share your impressions with us and don’t forget to drop your valuable feedback in the comments section down below.

How to Use WhatsApp on a Mac

WhatsApp is arguably the most popular messaging platform on the planet, with the Facebook-owned company boasting back in 2018 that it processed an eye-watering 64 billion messages processed on its servers on its most successful day (we’ll give you a second to let that sink in).

But what if you want to use WhatsApp on your Mac to reply to the messages on your iPhone? Is there a way to do that? It turns out, there are handfuls of way to access WhatsApp on a Mac, and here is where we outline your best options.

This article therefore explains how to access, send and receive messages via WhatsApp for iPhone (or Android!) on your Mac. Oh, and if you want to use WhatsApp on your iPad, we’ve got a tutorial for that too.

Update 24 August 2021: The good news is that a Whatsapp app for iPad is coming soon, which may well mean that a Mac app will follow shortly after.

WhatsApp Web

Back in 2015, WhatsApp started to offer a version of WhatsApp for PC & Mac users dubbed  WhatsApp Web. It’s essentially a browser-based WhatsApp app, allowing users to log in from virtually any device and be able to access their WhatsApp messages.

  1. Head to the WhatsApp Web website on Safari, Chrome, Opera or FireFox.
  2. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  3. Tap on Settings
  4. Select WhatsApp Web/Desktop.
  5. Tap on Scan bar code and wait while your browser connects to your WhatsApp.

Note that because WhatsApp connects to your iPhone to sync messages you should make sure it’s connected to WiFi or you might use up your data.

You’ll be able to access all the conversations available on your smartphone. In addition to this, you can send and receive media, participate in group chats, send and receive voice notes and even receive notifications whenever a new message is received.

You can even record voice notes to send to friends. Beside Type a message you’ll see a mic icon, click on that and (after approving the use of your microphone) you can record an audio message.

WhatsApp Desktop

Following the success of WhatsApp Web, the company launched its very own desktop app for Mac and PC users. It can be downloaded for free through the WhatsApp website or from the Mac App Store here and is extremely simple to set up.

  1. Download WhatsApp Desktop, install and open it.
  2. As with the web-browser version, you will need to open Whatsapp on your iPhone and scan the QR code so tap on Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop and scan the QR Code.
  3. You’ll see all your WhatsApp conversations appear in the app window.

Once you’ve paired your PC or Mac to your mobile device, you’ll have your WhatsApp contacts and conversations directly synchronised to your desktop! Any messages sent or received are reflected on both your phone and the desktop app in real-time. Therefore, if you delete a conversation on your phone, it will delete it off your desktop app and vice versa.

Just like the Web app, you’ll need to have your phone’s data or Wi-Fi enabled, so ensure you’ve got a mobile data plan to cater for your demands or that ensure you’re on a Wi-Fi network. If your phone is not connected, you won’t receive messages and your sent messages will be put on hold.

If you ever want to stop your desktop app sending and receiving your messages, simply log out of the desktop app.

Once you have logged in to the Desktop app you will see an alert to ask if you want to log out of the browser version.

How do I video call on WhatsApp on the Mac?

The iOS version of WhatsApp lets you place video calls just by tapping on the video camera icon at the top of a message thread. YOu can even add up to four more participants.

Unfortunately this isn’t replicated by the desktop or browser versions of the app, so you can’t make Whatsapp video calls on the Mac.

Or at least you can’t officially. There is a workaround if you are able to install an iOS or Android emulator on your Mac.

If you have Xcode you may be able to emulate iOS WhatsApp there.

Alternatively, you could try the following Android emulators for example:

  1. AndY
  2. Nox
  3. BlueStacks

How to use WhatsApp audio/video calls on Mac

Oleg Voronin —

WhatsApp in the face of fierce competition is constantly working on the capabilities of its service. The desktop (for PC and Mac) WhatsApp application also does not stand still and is gradually turning from a showcase product into a good communication software. In particular, now it can make and receive audio and video calls. The company assures that all calls use end-to-end encryption, so that third parties cannot listen to your communication.

If you're an active WhatsApp user and you're not ready to leave, but you haven't installed the Mac app yet, welcome. Now we'll tell you everything.

Install WhatsApp for Mac
Since Apple allows you to install software from third-party sources, Mac software developers very rarely list their products in the AppStore. However, WhatsApp can be found both in the Apple app store and on the messenger's official website - go to the download page and download the installation dmg image. WhatsApp supports macOS High Sierra or later.

When the file is ready, double-tap it and drag the WhatsApp icon to the folder next to it. Wait for the copy process to finish. Ready! Messenger can be found in the Mac application list - in Launchpad or in the Applications folder in the Finder.

WhatsApp activation and making calls
Launch WhatsApp from the application list. You will see a welcome window that contains prompts for activation. Follow this guide to link your smartphone to your Mac.

After activation, you will immediately see all your chats and contacts in the WhatsApp window. For the application to work, there are several conditions:

  • WhatsApp must be installed on the smartphone with a current account;
  • The smartphone must be constantly connected to the Internet.

It's not very convenient, but it's a fact. Perhaps in the future, developers will make the desktop application more independent.

To make calls, in addition to the conditions above, you need a microphone, speakers and a video camera. To start a call:

  • Select a chat from the list and click the audio or video call icon at the top of the window, next to the name of the interlocutor;
  • If the desired chat is not available, find the subscriber in contacts and open a new chat with him.
  • During a call, you can switch from audio to video by clicking the camera icon. The interlocutor must accept the request for video.

If the call cannot be started or is interrupted during communication, check the Internet connection on your smartphone. At the moment, audio-video calls are only available in private chats. WhatsApp is working on launching group calls.
