If you’ve ever wondered how to mute stories on Instagram (or how to hide Instagram Stories from other people), we’ve got you covered!
Instagram’s mute feature lets you silence stories from accounts you follow without having to actually unfollow those accounts — which is perfect if you’ve ever had a friend who posts *way* too many Instagram Stories!
But did you know that you can hide your stories from other users as well?
In this post, we cover everything you need to know about how to mute stories on Instagram + how to hide Instagram Stories from other people:
How to Hide Instagram Stories From Other People
You have a few different options when it comes to hiding your Instagram Stories from other people.
If you want to prevent someone from seeing anything you post to your story in the future, simply head to your profile and open your account settings.
Next, tap Privacy.
And then Story.
Tap the number of people next to Hide Story From.
Select the people you’d like to hide your story from, then tap Done.
You can also choose to hide your story from specific users from as you’re looking at who’s seen your story.
Just tap the ellipsis button to the right of their name and select Hide Story From [Username].
If your story is appearing on a location or hashtag page, you’ll see it at the top of the list of people who have seen your story. You can tap “x” to the right of a location or hashtag page to hide your story from it.
Note: When you hide Instagram Stories from certain people, they won’t be able to see anything you post to your story in the future.
Hiding Instagram Stories from someone is also different from blocking them and doesn’t prevent them from seeing your profile and posts.
To mute an account’s Instagram Stories, all you have to do is tap the ellipsis button (“…”) in the top-right corner of any post and tap Mute.
From there, you can choose whether to mute posts or mute posts and stories from an account.
You can also mute posts and stories by pressing and holding on a story in your tray or from a profile.
This moves the account’s story to the end of your queue and prevents it from auto-playing.
Note: The accounts you mute will not be aware that you’ve muted them — and you can always unmute an account to get their stories back in your tray! Just re-follow the steps above and select Unmute.
Why You May Want to Mute or Hide Instagram StoriesWe all have one… an irritating Instagram account that clogs your stories with photos and videos you have no intention of engaging with.
It could be an old friend or recent ex, but whatever the social dynamic, the ability to hide an accounts’ Instagram Stories from appearing in your tray without actually unfollowing them gives you way more control over the content you see!
It’s also a lot less drastic than unfollowing someone.
With the ability to mute stories on Instagram, you can avoid seeing the content you dislike (or prefer not to see) without affecting your real-life relationships with those users.
There’s also a possibility that Instagram algorithm takes this information into consideration when deciding what kind of content to serve up in your feed and Explore page.
Finally, it can also be helpful for mental health. Muting other people’s Instagram Stories gives you a greater ability to personalize your feed — so you can focus on engaging with content that has a positive impact on your mental health.

How to Hide Instagram Stories From a User or Group
- You can hide your Instagram stories from one of your followers or a group of followers.
- To hide your Instagram story, you need to access your account's privacy settings and add them to the "Hide Story From" list.
- To grant a follower or group of followers access to your Instagram stories in the future, you must remove them from the list.

Instagram stories are a fun, interactive way to share a reel of your favorite moments. This slideshow feature lets users animate and caption multiple photos, videos, and gifs to tell a "story" beyond their carefully curated photo board. Similar to Snapchat's timed messages, Instagram stories disappear unless you add them to your profile as Highlights.
If your profile isn't private, your stories are visible to anyone, even people without an Instagram account. The only way to completely restrict the public from viewing your Instagram stories is to make your account private.
But if you just want to prevent specific followers from viewing your stories, you can add them to a select list located in your Instagram's privacy settings.

How to hide your Instagram stories from your profile from a single user1. While viewing your Instagram feed, tap on the profile icon for the user you want to hide your story from.
2. Once on their Instagram page, select the menu icon in the upper right corner of your profile.
3. Select "Hide Your Story" from the menu that appears from the bottom. Your story will now be hidden from this Instagram user.

You can hide your story from certain people. To do this, follow the steps below.
Instagram app for Android
Tap the or icon on your profile picture in the lower right corner of the screen to go to your profile.
Click the icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select Settings.
Click Privacy and select History.
Click on the number of people under Hide history from.
Select the people you want to hide the story from, and then tap in the upper left corner of the screen. To show your story again to a specific person, click next to their username.
You can also select the people you want to hide your story from by viewing the list of people who have seen your story. Click to the right of the person's name, select Hide my story, and click Hide.

Tap the or icon on your profile picture in the bottom right corner of the screen to go to your profile.
Click the icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select Settings.
Click Privacy and select History.
Click on the number of people next to Hide my story from.
Select the people you want to hide your story from, and then click Done. To show your story again to a specific person, click next to their username.
You can also select the people you want to hide your story from by viewing the list of people who have seen your story. Click to the right of the person's name, select Hide my story, and click Hide.

What happens when you block someone on Instagram
In the past few years, Instagram, also known as Insta, has taken the world by storm and is now the place most people worship. From rekindling old friendships to being tolerant of someone spamming your schedule, everything happens on a daily basis. But when it gets too much, Instagram will let you take drastic steps.
Well, you can take the help of the block option.
You might be curious what happens when you block a user on Instagram? Simply put, a blocked profile will not be able to see your posts and stories. But is it? What happens to everything else like comments, likes, messages, biography and other things?
Don't worry We will answer all questions like this in this post where we will help you understand what happens after blocking someone on Instagram.

Your profile is available through a search
Actually, no. Sometimes, due to a cache issue, a blocked user or you can view each other's profile using search, but this will stop after a few days.
Can a blocked person see your Instagram profile and followers
Yes. A blocked person can see your profile, but not any of your posts, stories, or notes on your profile. You may be wondering how. Well, sometimes through search results and mostly from previous comments, tags, or group posts.
Because Instagram doesn't delete previous comments, clicking on them will block the person on your profile. They will be able to see your profile photo, bio, number of photos, and number of followers/followers. To reiterate, they won't see your posts or stories. The area will be blank as shown below.
The same applies to your side. You can also visit the blocked person's profile, but you won't be able to see any interesting content like posts or stories.
Can a blocked person see changes to their profile and biography
Yes. If they can access your profile from previous comments or posts, or even through your username, they will be able to see it - whether you have a public or private profile. What happens to likes and comments
Blocking does not remove old comments or likes from each other's profiles, as already mentioned on Instagram. That is, a blocked person will be able to see your old comments in his profile, and you will also be able to see his comments in your profile. However, likes disappear from each other's sight until you unlock them.
Since you can't view each other's profile, you won't be able to comment/like old or new photos during the blocking period.
When it came to likes and comments made on other profiles, I couldn't see them for either the person who blocked me or anyone I blocked. But Instagram says otherwise, and I quote: "People you block can still see your likes and comments on posts that were posted on public accounts or accounts they follow"
Can the blocked person mention or tag you
Surprisingly, a blocked person can mention or tag you using your username anywhere on Instagram.
However, Instagram will not notify you of this. But if you change your username, they won't be able to mention you because they don't have your new username. Similarly, you can also flag a person as blocked (for whatever reason), but the mention will not appear in their Activity.

What Happens When You Block Someone in Instagram Messages (DM)
You may have noticed that the blocking option is also available in Direct Messages. However, unlike Facebook, where blocking on Messenger is different from blocking on Facebook, it uses the same blocking feature that blocks the entire profile, not just messages.
Can you see the old messages
No. Blocking hides your private chats from each other in DM. This means the thread will disappear and you won't be able to view the posts (until you unlock them).
Can the blocked person message you
Yes and no. Although the old chat thread disappears from each other's profile, as mentioned above, you can use the "Send message" option available in the profile to view past messages and even send new messages.
To do this, open the profile of the person who blocked you using the previous tags or comments, and then click on the three-dot icon at the top. From the menu, select Send message.
Note . This method can also be used by the person who blocked someone to view previous messages.
However, this is useless. This is because Instagram will not notify the other person of incoming messages. But, when you unblock a person, the messages will appear in the chat thread.
Can a blocked person see online status
Last year, Instagram launched a deadly last active status feature in Direct Messages. When you block someone, they will be denied it, and so will you if it was enabled.
What happens to group messages
If a blocked person and you are in the same group chat, blocking will not remove you or remove you from the group. You will still be able to send and receive messages.
However, you won't see each other's new messages in the group, unlike the WhatsApp block where group messages are not affected. Old messages from each other can still be viewed and this gives you another way to access the profile. Hidden messages will reappear when you unblock the person.
Blocks Instagram story
Well, you can't block someone from Instagram story. You can only disable or hide stories. Muting the story will hide the other person's story on your profile, and with the hide option you can restrict your story from being seen.
Does Instagram block and blocks a person on Facebook
No. If your Instagram account is linked to Facebook (FB), blocking a user on Instagram will not affect your relationship with them on Facebook.
When you block someone from commenting, can they see your posts
Yes. Blocking someone from commenting on your posts does not block them from accessing your new or old posts, stories, and posts.
Their old comments will also remain.
If you don't know how to prevent someone from commenting on your posts, go to Instagram Settings > Privacy & Security > Manage Comments. In the "Block comments from" section, add the people you don't want to comment on your posts.
Does Instagram inform people when you block them
No. Instagram does not send notifications of any kind to the blocked person.
Blocks whether to unsubscribe from a person
Yes. Blocking a person will automatically prevent you from following them. This will also remove them from your followers. If you unlock them later, the two of you will have to follow each other again.
Do your followers know that you blocked someone?
No. Only you and the blocked person will keep this deep dark secret unless they tell someone.

The only difference is that a blocked user can create a new Instagram account or use someone else's profile to view your posts and stories since they are public.
How do you know if someone has blocked you on Instagram
There are many ways to determine this. First, open their profile with tags or comments and see if the profile shows the number of posts without posts. Secondly, if their previous messages have disappeared from your inbox, but their profile still appears in group messages, this may also indicate that you are blocked. And finally, the easiest way to find out is to check out another profile (yours or your friends).
What happens when you unblock someone on Instagram
As mentioned earlier, blocking someone removes the two of you from each other's following. So when you unlock them, you will have to follow them again. Now, if it's a public profile, you'll be able to see their posts and stories. For a private profile, they will need to accept your request first.
You can then start liking and commenting on each other's profiles again.
In the case of messages, the message thread with that person will reappear and you can start writing to them again. Both past messages and new ones received during the block (if they sent one) will also be displayed.
In short, two profiles will act like two regular profiles that do not follow each other.
How to block or unblock someone
Follow these steps to block a profile.
Step 1: Open the profile you want to block.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon at the top. Select "Block" from the pop-up menu.
To unblock a person, repeat the steps mentioned above and select the Unblock option. Also, if you can't access their profile, go to Instagram Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Accounts. Click on the profile you want to unblock. You will be taken to their profile. Hit Unlock.
