7 Tips for Choosing Your Instagram Profile Picture

Your Instagram profile picture is the first image that tells visitors who you are and what you do.

Here are seven tips for making a lasting impression:

  1. Use a Headshot or Brand Logo

  2. Choose a Clear High-resolution Image

  3. Crop the Perfect Size

  4. Incorporate an Eye-catching Pop of Color

  5. Favor Good Lighting

  6. Use Contrast to Stand Out

  7. Factor In Your Brand Identity

Tip #1: Use a Headshot or Brand Logo

When it comes to social branding, your profile picture is what people recognize most.

If you’re a company or product-based business, you’ll want to ensure that everyone who lands on your Instagram page is quickly introduced to who you are. So, have your logo front and center.

On the other hand, if you’re an influencer, creator, or offer a personal service — such as a photographer, or life coach — you might want to use a headshot.

Why? Because you are the main aspect of your brand, and you should introduce yourself to visitors right off the bat.

But if a headshot isn’t your vibe, that’s cool too — lifestyle photos are the next best thing to communicate your brand. Keep it authentic!

Take creator Alexandra Nikolajev for example, whose profile picture features her hanging out in her comfy clothes (spot the pup!).

This day-in-the-life photo fits perfectly with the casual nature of her feed.

It may sound simple, but using a headshot, logo, or lifestyle photo can help make your brand more recognizable on Instagram.

Tip #2: Choose A Clear High-resolution Image

When it comes to choosing a high-resolution image, the rule of thumb is: the higher the number of pixels, the larger the image.

If it’s too big, it’ll be blurry. So, 110 x 110 pixels is the sweet spot

It’s okay to float a little above, but try not to go too high as Instagram will compress your image.

Take a look at drag queen Kim Chi’s headshot for the resolution you’ll want to aim for.

To check the resolution of your image, there are a few ways to do it. iPhone, Macbook, and PC users — check out this guide!

Tip #3: Crop the Perfect Size

When it comes to your profile picture, there’s not a ton of space to work with.

Instagram profile photos are circular, so it’s best to use images with an aspect ratio of 1:1.

A subject that’s too far away, or awkwardly cropped, won’t do much for instant brand recognition.

With that in mind, if you’re a creator, crop from the shoulders up so you’re at the forefront of the frame.

See how content creator DonYe Taylor embodies an ideal profile stance:

If you’re using a company logo or product, the same rules apply. Keep to the center and be sure to use a clear, high-res image, just like Mailchimp:

NOTE: Be mindful that your profile picture shows up small in Instagram’s Home feed. So unless text is bold and easy to read, stick to imagery.

You can crop your Instagram content to the perfect size when scheduling posts with Later. Try it on desktop or mobile for free, now!

Tip #4: Incorporate an Eye-catching Pop of Color

Color can be a powerful communication tool used to convey a mood or show your personality.

So if you want to stand out from the crowd, consider adding a vibrant pop of color to your Instagram profile picture.

This could be through clothing, a background, a product, or text. Not only does this grab a user’s attention, but, with the right shade, your image will visually pop alongside other accounts.

See how blogger and dentist Josie Dental uses a burst of neon in her profile picture:

Experiment with different variations of color to see what works best — just remember to stick to your overall Instagram aesthetic.

TIP: Curating your feed aesthetic alongside your profile picture is a great way to sell your value and entice followers right from the jump.

Later’s Visual Planner makes it super easy to see how your feed will look in advance:

This way, you can make sure upcoming content fits in seamlessly with your existing Instagram content.

Tip #5: Favor Good Lighting

Lighting can make a subtle but big difference to the quality of your profile photo, making it more eye-catching and appealing.

*Blurry, grainy visuals need not apply*

When shooting a profile picture, opt for a location that’s well lit with natural light (during the daytime, if possible) and avoid harsh shadows.

Turn to digital creator Vic Styles for inspo:

If natural light is hard to come by though, no sweat.

Artificial lighting, such as a ring light, is the go-to for many content creators because it provides continuous and balanced lighting.

Tip #6: Use Contrast to Stand Out

While you can always play it safe with a neutral backdrop, juxtaposing color and creating contrast has the power to stop users in their tracks.

Just take a look at the contrast in Qveen Herby’s Instagram profile picture:

Her matchup of blue, red, and white makes her photo visually pop.

Play around by mixing and matching colors and textures (that represent your brand) to create contrast in your headshot or company logo.

Keep in mind, you want to strike a balance with standing out — through bold colors, or a feature wall — without detracting from the focus of the image.

Your profile picture should be selling you (or your logo), not the backdrop.

Tip #7: Factor In Your Brand Identity

Your Instagram profile picture is a small, yet mighty component to your Instagram bio.

It’s a key visual opportunity to introduce what you’re all about, and can serve as an extension of your content.

Digital creator Kay knows what she’s doing. With soft tones front and center, you can gauge her warm, cozy aesthetic right away.

If you’re known for bright pops of color, steer clear of dark, moody photos for your Instagram profile picture — it will feel ingenuine and send visitors mixed signals about your brand.

TIP: Keeping the same picture across all platforms makes it easier for followers to find you and identify with your content.

And that’s it!

A perfect Instagram profile picture is the first step in getting your brand off the ground. The next step? Adding a customized landing page to the link in your Instagram bio.

With Linkin.bio by Later, you can create a fully customizable mini-website for your link in bio — so you can continue your brand experience and drive traffic to your latest campaigns, blog posts, products, and beyond.

Whether you’re an influencer, creator, or business, pairing a strong profile picture with an on-brand link in bio landing page can elevate your brand identity, encourage new followers, and attract those all-important clicks.

The profile photo displays 110 x 110 pixels on mobile devices, and 180 x 180 pixels on desktop.

It also displays as a circle, so you’ll want to upload a square photo with a 1:1 aspect ratio. A photo of 200 x 200 pixels is a safe size to upload for clear quality.

8 Rules to Live By For the Best Instagram Profile Pictures

These are Tailwind’s expert tips for choosing cute Instagram profile pictures that work with your brand and Instagram aesthetic!

These tips are good to keep in mind for profile pictures on any social media platforms. In fact, you should consider using the same profile picture for all of your branded social media networks.

1. DO Decide Between a Personal Photo or a Brand Logo

First, you’ll need to decide whether a photo of yourself or a brand logo or icon makes the most sense for your Instagram account.

Some things to consider:

A logo makes sense for business accounts with multiple owners or employees. It’s also easily recognizable in the feed and in Instagram Stories to your loyal followers!

Types of businesses that benefit from a logo profile image:

  • Retail
  • Media
  • Professional Services

A personal photo makes sense for a brand or business built around just yourself.

Types of businesses that benefit from a photo profile image:

  • Bloggers
  • Lifestyle photographers
  • Influencers
  • Solopreneurs

2. DON’T Use an Off-Center Photo

Playful angles and creative shots work great in your regular Instagram photos but can make cropping and centering your profile pic difficult.

Remember, you’ll need to upload a 1:1 square that is then cropped into a circle for your Instagram profile picture.

To get an eye-catching profile shot, you’ll want the focus of your photo (whether it’s a headshot or a logo) to be centered and as large as possible in that limited space.

3. DO Choose a Photo with Good Lighting and Clear Contrast

Muted, subtle shades in Instagram profile pictures can be hard to make out in a thumbnail unless there’s a clear difference between the background and the subject.

You can use all white, all black, or any color that your outfit (and you) pop against!

4. DON’T Choose a Trendy Photo You’ll Have to Update Frequently

With Instagram challenges taking off, it seems like theming your profile photo after seasons, holidays or current events is a good way to get in on the fun.

However, in the long run, this just means you’ll be switching out your photo more frequently. Who has time for that?

Followers also can identify your brand from your profile pic, so changing it often can cause followers to get confused and not view as many of your stories, etc.

Stick with a photo or a logo that’s timeless, and requires updating only every once and a while.

5. DO Take Your Aesthetic and Profession Into Account

A picture is worth a thousand words, and your profile picture is your first calling card to new and potential followers.

Make sure it clearly conveys the aesthetic of your Instagram posts and Instagram Stories and communicates what you do!

For example, photographers might hold a camera as a prop, or a baking blogger might hold a mixing bowl or a scrumptious dessert.

Your Instagram profile photo color palette should also match the brand colors that show up most prominently in your feed. You can even add an extra snap to your profile by changing your Instagram bio fonts and keeping them aligned with your brand too!

6. DON’T Use a Full Body Photo

Refresher: your profile pic is a 110 x 110 circle on mobile, and a 180 x 180 circle on desktop. In the feed, it’s a tiny 40 x 40 circle!

That’s a small space, and it makes the full body and distance shots almost impossible to make out.

So when you take your profile picture, focus on framing your head and shoulders in the shot.

Pro tip: If you’re using a logo and your brand name is particularly long, think about using initials or a recognizable icon in your signature brand Instagram color palette to save space and create a recognizable detail.

7. DO Crop and Resize Your Photo Before Uploading

You can save yourself a lot of headaches by preparing your photos before you upload them.

Crop your photo into a square (and resize if necessary. ) 200 x 200 works great! We wouldn’t suggest over 500 x 500 at max, as IG will compress the image.

By doing this, you can double-check centering and framing to ensure important details aren’t lost when your new profile picture displays in the Instagram circle frame.

8. DON’T Take Only One Shot

You may be tempted to call it one and done, but take at least 5-10 different options for your profile photo. Test different props, expressions, and poses to find what brings your personal branding on Instagram to life.

Plus, if you don’t want to use the same photo across all your social media channels, you can use some of these other shots!

Just remember to make sure your profile pic doesn’t clash with cover photos on your other social media channels (think LinkedIn and Facebook!)

How to take beautiful photos for Instagram*

March 11, 2013 Photo Android

A few simple tips to improve your photography.

Remember the basic rules

— 1 —

Try to photograph in good light, ideally it should be natural. Experiment with light, try to focus the camera on different parts of the frame: bright and dark.

— 2 —

Take several shots in a row, in which case you can choose the best one. nine0003

— 3 —

Use horizontal format unless circumstances require otherwise. People often forget to turn their smartphone around and shoot in portrait mode, which makes photos look like cropped stripes. For the most forgetful, there is even a special Horizon Camera program that aligns the horizon.

appbox fallback https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hvt.horizon&hl=ru&gl=ru nine0003

— 4 —

Take pictures with the volume key. The physical button is more convenient, it is easier to press it at the right moment. And thanks to the physical feedback, you will immediately understand that you have taken a picture.

— 5 —

Always look at the subject or scene with the naked eye before taking a picture before looking through the screen. It helps to choose the angle.

- 6 -

Subscribe to famous photographers. Let them inspire you and be a good example. So, look at the work of brahmino, thiswildidea, mikekus or natgeo. nine0003

- 7 -

Shoot a lot and diligently - only in this way you can awaken the photographer in you. But don't fill your personal Instagram* with all the frames in a row. Choose the best.

Get the most out of your phone

— 1 —

Crop your shots, cut out unnecessary details that ruin your photos.

— 2 —

Stylize photos with built-in filters, but choose wisely.

— 3 —

Make sure that the maximum frame resolution is set in the camera settings. Sometimes users forget this detail and shoot with a camera set to medium or low quality. nine0003

— 4 —

Use additional programs and services that enhance Instagram*. For example, create original collages in Layout or edit finished shots in the Snapseed editor.

— 5 —

Use the grid in your camera settings to help you compose according to the rule of thirds.

— 6 —

Don't forget the optional accessories. For example, an attached lens or a tripod will bring your photos closer to professional ones. A waterproof case will allow you to take spectacular pictures underwater. nine0003

Try different ideas, angles, scenes

— 1 —

Avoid clichés: cats, food, selfies of the same type… Too banal for you, isn't it? But if you decide to take a self-portrait, then use scientific tricks.

— 2 —

But try to take less pictures of yourself. Instead, try to shoot other people, unusual situations, interesting objects and places more often.

— 3 —

Always look for new stories. Try to fill the pictures with artistic value, creativity, humor, in the end. nine0003

— 4 —

Capture not only the picture, but also the feelings, try to convey the mood.

— 5 —

Experiment with angles.

How to take a beautiful photo on Instagram: from theory to practice

You must have heard that Instagram* is a social network for visuals, and photos are of paramount importance here. Not without exceptions, but that's how it is. What to do if you want to conquer Instagram *, but you have never been a photographer? How to take cool photos on Instagram*? Don't be upset, believe in yourself and read this article! nine0003

Advantages of Instagram* for non-photographers

If you have long been attracted by the art of photography, but are afraid of the number of complex words, technical nuances and long processing, your time has come - Instagram* will solve problems and wake up dormant creative potential. After all, everyone can take cool photos on Instagram* and upload normal, high-quality content to their profile!

A phone is enough

You don't have to buy a big expensive camera to take cool photos for your Instagram account*. You can get by with a smartphone with a good camera. nine0003

Single photo format

By default, there are two types of photos on Instagram*: square and rectangular. This means you don't have to worry about cropping, weight, or photo size. The social network will think about it for you. Catch cool shots and upload to your account by publishing a post or story.

Read our blog about the nuances of uploading photos to Instagram* without cropping.

If you make it a rule that your profile will only have Instagram photos*, that is, square ones, you can do it in the following ways:

Set the frame format to 1:1 in the phone's camera settings Crop the photo to square format when publishing a post

No need for Photoshop , you have to try. Pictures will have to be uploaded from the camera to a computer, deal with processing programs (Photoshop or similar), learn a lot of complex words, like “exposure” or “trimming”. It's easier with Instagram. nine0003

The application itself has a shooting function. You can edit brightness, contrast, saturation and other parameters in the application by moving your finger along the scale. Here, on Instagram*, there are many filters that are superimposed on the photo with a touch, even a child can handle it.

When standard photo editing tools are no longer enough, check out our articles for more applications:

Insta photography theory

When deciding how to take good photos on Instagram * on your phone, follow a few simple rules.

Daylight

Light from a chandelier and lamp makes the photo yellow and distorts colors, so if you are new to photography, shoot only in daylight - it is the most advantageous. Daylight doesn't mean sunny day, it's just daylight hours. In this light, the photo turns out “as if alive”: with natural colors and shadows. nine0003

You don't have to go outside to take a photo on Instagram* in daylight, you can also take pictures at home. If it's dark at home, get closer to the window, shoot on the windowsill, or set up a photo zone next to the window.

Compose

The social network is not an online store, and photos of items on an etched white background that look great in a store window on Instagram * usually do not arouse much interest. Here they love photos with details and textures that are interesting to consider. In this case, you can use a white background, but if it is a sheet or a blanket, the frame will become more interesting. In addition to them, you can use a special photophone. Backgrounds come in different textures and colors: under the tree, under the concrete, under the brick - choose any. nine0003

The photophone itself, of course, is not very interesting. To make it interesting, you need to put something on it. It can be postcards, books, magazines, cookies, flowers, travel magnets - all that junk that gathers dust on the shelves and it's a pity to throw it away.

But if you are thinking about creating an online store, read “How to take a professional photo for Instagram *”, “Hand-Made. How to make a selling photo of a product” on our blog.

Clean lens

It may be obvious and funny, but it is the smudged lens that often prevents you from taking normal photos on Instagram*. One day I decided that my phone was broken: all the photos turned out to be cloudy. A few hours separated me from buying a new phone, when I realized that I just needed to wipe the lens.

Wipe the lens. Always clean the lens.

Focus on

There may be more than one subject in the frame. The most clear should be the main one. To "catch the focus" it is enough to poke your finger into the desired object on the phone screen. nine0003

Take a lot of shots

Back when everything was shot with film cameras, every shot was worth its weight in gold. Now, in the digital age, we can click the shutter until our phone runs out of space. Then remove the excess and click again. This is good, because it is not always possible to "see the frames" the first time.

Tip: Take multiple shots at once. Swap items in places, add new ones, remove unnecessary ones. Then choose the best option and publish a post or story. nine0003

The practice of insta photography

In theory, everything is simple and clear, but in practice, accounts are full of trash pictures. Why? Because after the lecture it is necessary to work out seminars to consolidate the material. And if “just a photo” in stories is still somehow appropriate, then beautiful photos should always be taken for posts on Instagram *.

Find examples

Taste can be trained like a muscle. Perhaps now you don’t know what a “beautiful photograph” is, how to build a frame, how to lay out small things on a photo background. But there are many who know and post cool photos on Instagram* - find them! Subscribe to accounts that you like, whose style is close to you. Let their photos constantly flash in your feed. nine0003

Practice

You can't use other people's photos. But you can take your photos "based on". At first, this will help you to “fill your hand” and feel the insta-style in photography. Do not worry that you are repeating, because you are unlikely to get exactly the same photo.

Over time, you yourself will learn to invent and see shots, and the need for repetition will disappear by itself. Repetition is only needed at the very beginning while you are learning. I myself went through this, learning to photograph from other people's photographs. nine0003 Friend / foe

Gather the base and ideas

Among the pictures you look at, there will most likely be those that you can hypothetically repeat for your profile. Surely you also have beautiful bedding, or a cool mug, or you can also lay out dry leaves in a book, or it’s interesting to gut a bouquet. If you like the frame and you understand that it is not difficult to recreate it, take a print screen and save the idea for creating a photo in the Instagram format*.

Change your angle.

The simplest thing you can do. What is the point? You are asked to take a picture of a person. You take your smartphone, stand in front of it and press the button. Do not do like this.

Squat or stand up so that your faces are at the same level to prevent the person in the photo from turning out to be short-legged. For the next shot, climb somewhere higher and take a picture from above. Squat down and take a picture from below. Come closer and again from below. Take a photo from the side. Go behind the tree and take a couple more shots through the leaves. This is called changing perspective. nine0003 lissa.zn and _lsvln_ just put a smartphone in an unusual place for shooting, and the result was not “just a photo”

When you look at cool pictures on social networks, not necessarily people, think for a second where was the photographer at the time of the shoot. And how would the frame turn out if the photo was taken in a standard way, from a height of human growth.

You can't say better about the importance of the angle.

The technique is also suitable for subject shooting. You can take a beautiful photo of a mug on a table on Instagram* from a dozen angles: from the side, placing the smartphone on the table, just from the side, from the side of the handle, from the top in the center, slightly tilting the smartphone from above, and so on. nine0003

Reflection.

Also an easy trick. Look for reflections: in shop windows, in puddles, in mirrors, in sunglasses, and even in broken glass, if you're not superstitious.

irenaponaroshku and kristikut experimenting while relaxing on the beach and taking Instagram photos* for posts and stories

Get deeper.

Cool trees, flowers, grass, children's climbing frames? Don't stand in the background, go inside if possible. nine0003 akmaral_bekmaganbetova and analim_oni were not afraid to go deeper into the thickets

Seasonal photos.

There is something beautiful in every season. If you get stuck with ideas, remember what is now, what will not be later, and take a picture with it. In winter, it is snow, snowmen, a fairytale forest, garlands in the city and cool shop windows, snow fun. In the fall ... yes, you yourself will continue this list better than me!

In spring, nature wakes up and photographer.victoria28 takes a photo with everything that woke up, filling the feed with spring content

Focus on one subject .

Often, seeing something cool, we take and take a photo thoughtlessly. Tip: Your shots will look more professional if only a small part of the beauty is in focus, and the rest goes into the background.

An example from my dacha. Pay attention to the grid - the main object is better placed along the lines or at the intersection points of the lines. The eye is so pleasing

A part of myself.

The picture will attract more attention if you shoot not just an interesting street or forest, but insert a part of yourself into the frame. Let it be your legs, or a hand with a hat or ice cream, it doesn't matter.

There is a story behind such shots...

Shoot life .

When you blog and look for footage, walk the streets of the city and take a closer look at your surroundings. We all often hurry somewhere, and do not notice many interesting things. You can also ask to take a picture of you "in the crowd." Here you are going somewhere, or sitting on a bench thinking, and people, bicycles, cars are hurrying around. Just make sure the focus is on you. nine0003 Tip: if it's difficult, imagine that you are a reportage photographer, and your task as a newspaper editor is to capture the life of the city :-)

Natural frames .

Arches, a large mesh fence, an art object, even an inflatable swimming ring can become a kind of photo frame.

When shooting outdoors, just think about what could serve as a frame for a photo, and most likely, you will quickly find the right one. v.olga3 and krutikova_yana found Instagram photo ideas*

Repeating objects, symmetry .

A row of identical cars, a long fence, even identical white sneakers lined up - all this attracts attention with its repetitions. The same with symmetry: the eye automatically begins to look for inconsistencies in ideality, and you have earned attention to your photo.

monika0305 sees symmetry in architecture, red_apple_photo in nature. When there is no symmetry around, create it yourself like ya.shedow

Use shadow .

Difficult but interesting technique. An ugly shadow will spoil even a beautiful shot. Do you want chic? Train your eyesight and repeat like a pro.

little_studio and irenaponaroshku and their shadow games

Funny shots .

The main rule is not to overwork.
