Instagram is a fantastic social media platform that we all love for sharing visual content, and discovering exciting visual content from others. Like all social platforms, however, Instagram content can be fleeting and fast-moving, so knowing how to download or save photos and posts is a really useful skill to learn.
Perhaps you want to save your own Instagram photos, either for safe keeping or to share them elsewhere. Maybe you want to download content other users have posted. Or you might want to save your old photos, change your Instagram username, and start fresh with an empty feed. Heck, maybe you're just tired of the app and want to save your memories before deleting your Instagram account altogether.
Whatever your reasoning for wanting to save Instagram photos may be, here's a helpful, step-by-step guide that will teach you how to save photos from the platform.
How to save Instagram photos you've created to your phoneInstagram makes it very easy for you to save photos that you've captured, filtered, and edited in the Instagram app to your phone's photo library.
Open the Instagram app, and head over to your profile by tapping the person-shaped icon or your profile photo shown at the bottom of your screen. (What you see will depend on which version of Instagram your phone has.)

Once the menu appears as a pop-up, select to go into "Settings," it's the first option at the top of the list. Next tap on the "Account" option, then finally hit up the "Original Photos" option which will show if you're using an iOS device. Android users will see the option for "Original Posts".

The Instagram app now gives you the option to automatically save down your Instagram imagery. Hit the blue toggle to "Save Original Photos/Posts.

Now that this option is turned on, every photo you post on Instagram will also be saved to your phone's photo library. How convenient!
How to save other users' Instagram photosIt's really easy to save an Instagram picture or video posted by anyone (as long as the user is public) to a private area of your Instagram app so that you can view them again at a time that suits you. It's worth noting as well that when you save a post from someone, whether they follow you or not, they will not be able to tell that you've saved it.
To save a post, tap the bookmark icon that appears below it. This will add the post to your generic "Saved" folder.

Alternatively, if you want to save a post to a certain collection within your private saved area, tap and hold the bookmark icon. This brings up a pop-up of the Instagram collections you've already created.
It also gives you the option to create a new collection. This is done by tapping the "plus" symbol.

Now, to see the picture or video you've saved and the collections you've created, go to your profile by once again tapping on the person-shaped icon or profile photo at the bottom right of your screen. Then tap the "Saved" option that appears in the pop-up menu. This will show you all the saved content that you bookmarked.

As we've stated already, only you can see what you've saved, and the collections that you've created. As a reminder, other Instagram users will not know you have saved their content.
How to download Instagram photos using your desktop browserBecause of very valid copyright issues, Instagram does not let you download other users' photos, either on a regular desktop browser, or on an iOS or Android mobile device.
However, there is a slightly sneaky workaround that makes it possible to do it on a desktop browser. Do not use this for evil.
To download any image on Instagram open the image in a fresh browser tab. (Note: If you're trying to open without being logged into your own Instagram account, you'll need to right click on the image and select "Copy Link Address.") Now land near the image and right click your mouse or other input device. You will see a menu pop up. Select "View Page Source."

This will bring the page source code up in a separate browser tab. Scroll down through the code, or use your browser's "Find" tool, until you see the first .jpg link you come to.

Copy just the URL text that appears between the two speech, or quotation marks. Paste this URL into another fresh browser tab. Once the image has loaded you can right click to download it to your computer as you would a normal photograph on the internet.

How to Download and Save All Your Instagram Photos
If you've used Instagram for a while, you've probably built up quite a collection of your own photos, as well as those you've saved from others.
You can always view them on your Instagram page, but what if you want to save copies as a backup?
Thankfully, it's pretty easy to save Instagram photos. We'll show you how to download and save photos from Instagram on iPhone, Android, and your computer.
How to Download All Your Instagram Photos at Once
If you want to download everything you've posted on Instagram in one go, you can use Instagram's simple tool on your computer or phone. To use it, first log into Instagram on your desktop or laptop, or open the mobile app.
On mobile, tap the Profile icon in the bottom-right, followed by the three-line Menu in the upper-right. From the menu that appears, choose Your activity. Then scroll down and hit Download your information. While you're here, note that this page is useful for managing what you do on Instagram.

On desktop, it's a similar procedure.
Click your profile picture in the upper-right corner to open a menu, then choose Your activity. On the resulting page, choose Download your information on the left side.
Either method will take you to Instagram's download request page, where you can get a copy of everything you've posted on Instagram.
Instagram says this includes all "your photos, comments, profile information, and more." This can take up to 14 days to send, but shouldn't take more than a few minutes to an hour in most cases.
Your email address should already be in the field, so click Next to continue. On desktop, you can choose HTML or JSON for the format. You'll need to then enter your password, and Instagram will start generating the data.
Soon, you'll get an email with a link to everything you've ever shared on Instagram. It's only valid for a few days, so download your data quickly before it expires.
This is the best way to save an archived copy of your entire Instagram profile in a short amount of time.
How to Download Instagram Photos on iPhone
Instagram doesn't provide an official way for you to download your own photos individually on iPhone, Android, or the web. You might be tempted to download an app that claims to do this for you, but you should stay away from most of these. Never enter your Instagram password into a third-party app, as doing so could lead to your account getting stolen.
However, some downloader apps are safe to use because they don't require your credentials. One is iGram, which works on mobile and desktop. It has some ads, but they aren't overly intrusive. If the service isn't available, you'll find others like it that perform the same task.
To use it, find the Instagram photo you want to download—whether it's one of yours or someone else's. Tap the three-dot button at the top-right of the post and choose Link to copy the URL to your clipboard.
Next, open iGram in Safari or another browser. Tap in the URL box and choose Paste to add the link to your photo. Then press Download. After a few moments, you'll see the image appear below.
You can tap on the Download 1080px or other buttons to quickly download the file in a variety of sizes. If you prefer, long-press on the image and choose Save to Photos or Share > Save Image instead.

For future reference, you can also toggle a setting in the Instagram app to save a local copy of everything you post. To enable this, tap the Profile icon in the bottom-right corner of Instagram, then open the three-line menu in the top-right. Choose Settings in the list that appears.
Choose Account > Original Photos from the list here. If you enable Save Original Photos, Instagram will save a copy of the unedited version of any photos you take with the Instagram camera.
This is a good way to make sure you don't lose anything, and saves you from doing the manual method above every time.

How to Download Instagram Photos on Android
The process for downloading Instagram photos on Android is quite similar to the above process for iPhone. We'll cover it again here with Android screenshots, due to a few minor differences.
Open Instagram and find the picture you want to save. Tap on the three-dot Menu button above the post and choose Copy Link to add it to your clipboard. Next, open Chrome or another browser and go to iGram.
Press and hold inside the text field to show the Paste option and tap that. Then hit Download and wait a few moments for the image to process. Scroll down and tap Download 1080px or one of the other buttons to immediately download it. If you prefer, you can also long-press on the image and choose Download image.
To find your downloaded image, tap the three-dot menu button at the top-right of Chrome and choose Downloads to view it. You can also use a file explorer app to navigate to the Downloads folder and check it there.

You'll find the same option on Android for saving a copy of all future Instagram posts, too. In the Instagram app, tap your Profile icon in the bottom-right of the app, then open the three-line menu at the top-right and choose Settings from the resulting window. On the next menu, choose Account > Original Posts.
Enable the options here to save copies of everything you post to your phone's storage. In addition to saving unedited photos, Instagram on Android lets you also choose to save the posted images and videos you put on your account.

How to Download Instagram Photos on a PC
iGram (and similar services) will work fine on your desktop or laptop too.
To use it on a desktop browser, just click the three-dot menu button on an Instagram post and choose Copy link. Paste the link into iGram to access a downloadable copy of the image, just like on mobile.
If you'd like to take a more technical route, you can use a trick to access and download Instagram images through the page's source code. To do this, first click a photo's timestamp near the bottom of the page (such as 2 Days Ago) to open its permanent URL. Once on that page, right-click the image and choose View page source.
In a new tab, you'll see a bunch of HTML code, but don't worry if you're not familiar with this. Press Ctrl + F to search, and enter og:image to jump to the only line that contains this text. On that line, find the URL that appears after content=. It will usually have .jpg somewhere in it; you'll need to copy the entire URL for it to work.
Copy this URL and open it in a new tab to load just the image. Then you can right-click and choose Save image as to download a copy.
How to Quickly Download Many Instagram Photos From a Profile
If you want to download many photos from one account, it's pretty slow to use the above methods for each image. There are other Instagram downloader websites that let you quickly download many images from a profile.
They're not perfect—most of them don't let you download more than a handful of images in one session, or charge you to download everything from an account. But if you want to download a few recent posts from an account, it's faster to use a service like Toolzu.
This offers a Download profile option that loads all recent images from a user and lets you click Download to grab their photos in quick succession. Give it a try if you find the above too slow. You can download more photos at once if you sign up for an account.
Don't Forget About Bookmarking Images on Instagram
While it's not the same as downloading, you can also hit the Bookmark icon on a post to save it for later. You can access all your saved Instagram bookmarks by tapping on the three-line menu on your profile page and choosing Saved.
Bookmarking on Instagram allows you to jump back to a photo without copying the link or downloading it. These are only visible to you; nobody else can see your saved posts on Instagram.
Keep in mind that bookmarks are only shortcuts to existing posts on Instagram. If the owner takes down a photo you've saved, the bookmark won't work anymore.
Unfortunately, there is no way to download all your saved photos on Instagram at once. Some third-party software exists for this, but as mentioned, you should be careful about trusting these apps since they can compromise your Instagram account.
In addition to the default Saved list, you can create and manage additional Collections on this page.
These are handy for collecting posts around a certain theme, such as ideas for a wedding.

When you tap the Bookmark icon on an Instagram post, you can then choose Save to Collection to put it somewhere else. Tap a collection from the list that appears, or hit the Plus icon to make a new one.

How to save photos or videos to albums on Instagram
To save a post (video or photo) to an Instagram album (collection), click on the bookmark icon under the post. In this case, the author of the publication will not know that you have saved it.

Instagram has powerful features that make it easy to upload your own photos and tag other people's photos, but it prevents you from trying to download any user's photo the way you normally would on other sites. Saving copies of photos from your own Instagram account before posting
If you uploaded a photo to Instagram without using the filters built into the application, then of course you have a copy of it on your device. But for those who take photos directly through the Instagram app and edit them using the built-in filters, the result to be posted can be easily and automatically saved with one simple setting.
Here's what to do:
- Navigate to your profile tab.
- Click the gear icon in the top right corner to go to settings.
- Scroll through the tab until you see an item called Save Original Photos (in the Settings tab) with a button next to it.

If this setting is enabled, all of your posts will be automatically copied before being posted to a new album or directory named "Instagram" in your mobile device's Gallery. This applies to all posts, including photos taken directly from the Instagram app, uploaded from your device without editing, or uploaded from your device and edited using the in-app filters.
Saving photos (and videos) of other users for re-viewing within the application
Instagram now has a built-in save feature. While it allows you to tag a post with a photo or video, doesn't download anything directly to your device, is better than nothing. Until recently, the only way to tag another user's photo or video in the Instagram app was to "like" it and then view the list of posts you've "liked" in the settings tab.
The Instagram save feature has two major drawbacks:
- To re-view a post marked ("saved") in the post application, you will need an internet connection.
- The saved image may disappear if the author decides to delete it. Remember, the tag is just a label for the photo - nothing is stored in your account or on your device.
On the other hand, if you want to follow the comments on a popular post, you can save the post and come back later to read the latest comments - at least you have this very useful tool. nine0003
How do I use the new Save tab on Instagram?
The new Save tab is indicated by a small bookmark icon above each user profile right above the feed photo in the horizontal menu. You can't see the save tab on other users' profiles, but you can see it on your profile. This is to ensure that you only see what you have saved.
To save any post you find on Instagram, search for bookmark icon in the lower right corner and click on it.
The post will be automatically added to your Save tab, no notification will be sent to the post author.
Saving photos of other users from Instagram - several ways
If you have ever tried to call the context menu and select the option Save as ... on an Instagram photo from your computer or tried to do the same on your mobile device, by pressing and holding a photo while viewing through a mobile browser, they noticed that nothing was happening. nine0003

View the page code and search for the image file
If you have access to a computer, you can save an Instagram photo by finding the image file in the page code. nine0003
You can simply click the three dot icon on any photo post in the Instagram app to copy the URL and then paste it into an email addressed to you. And if you're already browsing Instagram from a computer, but you can click on the icon with three dots at the bottom of any post and then click Go to post - to go from the feed to the page of this post.
Then access the URL address of the photo on the computer by calling the context menu with the right mouse button and selecting item View Page Source , which will open the page source in a new tab.
The image file has a .jpg extension. You can call the search function with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + F or Cmd + F and enter . jpg in the search query field.
The first .jpg file you find should be an image file. Using the cursor, highlight the entire line from https :// instagram . to . jpg and copy it. Then paste it into the address field of your browser and you will see an image that you can save with a right click by selecting Save As ... .
Try third-party apps (if you're desperate)
If you've already wondered about this, you may have found third-party apps that claim to let you save or download Instagram photos. However, there is no guarantee that the app will work as you expect, as Instagram looks at all API requests and rejects any that interact too deeply with their app or violate their terms of use.
