Identifying the best of this century

The best are now, last year, last decade, last century. They like to determine the best in all industries, be it sports, cinema, science, etc. During the pause, we also decided to start identifying the best. Let's take the last 20 years, which we have seen and know quite well.

Subscribe to our Telegram channel to keep abreast of all the latest news and events via the link.

No long foreplay today. Almost immediately, we will begin to introduce the riders who ended up in the top 10.

Let's just note that it turned out to be quite simple to choose riders for the top ten, they stood out from the others. But it was very difficult to place these ten in their places. In our opinion, the difference between the tenth and fourth riders in the top is minimal. We also spent a lot of time on the distribution of places in the top three, although the leaders of the top still had a slight advantage over the rest.

Below you will find a survey in which you can express your own opinion.

You can get acquainted with the first half of the rating or refresh it in your memory here.

10) Peter Sagan (Slovakia)

Public favorite Peter Sagan opens the top ten in the 21st century. Many probably wanted to see him at a higher position, but it is too early to put him higher.

Sagan is the author of a couple of unique achievements, he became world champion in the group race three times in a row, won the green jersey of the best sprinter of the Tour de France seven times. However, the riders who are higher in the ranking also have their own super records, which are in no way inferior in importance to Sagan's achievements.

Seven green jerseys is really cool and a record, but the sprint standings cannot be compared with the general one. This achievement should not be overestimated.

We consider Peter's 12 victories at separate stages of the "Great Loop" no less significant. To these, he added three stages of the Vuelta, three victories at the Gent-Wevelgem, the overall standings of the Tour of Poland, two first places at the Quebec Grand Prix and one won at the E3 Harelbeck and the Montreal Grand Prix. ". In total, by the age of 30, Sagan has already scored 121 professional victories.

What is Peter missing? Monumental classics, of course. He won the Ronde van Vlaanderen and the Paris-Roubaix once each, but in this century there were riders who did the same much more often. At Milan-San Remo, Sagan was second three times, it is obvious that at the moment he lacks the victory in this classic most of all.

It would be nice to win a few stages at the Giro as well. So far, the Slovak has not looked at the Italian Grand Tour. I planned this year, but emergency circumstances intervened.

Sagan does not have an Olympic title, but few people in road cycling can boast of it. The route of the group race at the next Olympics in Tokyo is not very suitable for Peter.

Milan-San Remo and one extra win each at the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix will put Sagan much higher on the list of outstanding riders. So far tenth.

9) Paolo Bettini (Italy) In ninth place in the ranking is the famous Italian day-traveler Paolo Bettini. He ended his career almost 12 years ago, so the younger generation of fans do not know him very well, although his collection of titles is simply outstanding.

Bettini is the only rider in the history of cycling to win an Olympic gold and a world title in a group race as a professional. Until 1996, only amateurs raced on the highway at the Olympics, who did not yet have contracts with the strongest teams in the world. In 2004, Bettini won the group race at the Athens Games, and in 2006 and 2007, he became the strongest at the World Championship twice in a row.

Bettini is all right and with monuments - two victories each at Liege - Bastogne - Liege and Giro di Lombardy, one at Milan - San Remo. The Italian won one of the two victories at Liege - Bastogne - Liege in 2000, that is, back in the 20th century, but anyway, in this century he has the gold of the World Championship, the Olympics and three different monuments.

Bettini is also doing well on other prestigious ephemeral races. Victory at the "Classic of San Sebastian" and "Grand Prix of Hamburg", two victories at the already defunct "Grand Prix of Zurich", the title of national champion.

Bettini didn't have many titles in the stage races, but he still won the main thing for himself. He has victories at the stages of all three grand tours, and at the Vuelta there are five stages at once. At the Giro, he won the Maglia Ciclamino (analogous to the green jersey of the Tour de France).

Paolo was good on hard terrain, but that didn't stop him from hacking away and occasionally coming out victorious against clean sprinters, even the likes of Alessandro Petacchi or Eric Zabel.

In total, the Italian has 61 professional victories and a well-deserved place in the top ten.

8) Mark Cavendish (Great Britain)

In eighth place was Mark Cavendish, the best sprinter of the 21st century, who is still competing, but has been going through hard times for a long time.

Back in 2008, when he was only 22 years old, Cavendish won four stages of the Tour de France. In the future, he brought the number of stage wins at the main race of the world to 30. Now, in this indicator, he is second only to Eddy Merckx, who has 34 wins.

A couple of years ago, Mark made no secret of the fact that he hoped to break the Merckx record, but in view of recent failures, he talks about this less and less.

All right with the Cavendish record and other important races. At the Giro, he won 15 stages, in the already distant 2009 he became the winner of Milan-San Remo, and two years later he won the world title in the group race. The Briton did not look at the Vuelta too often, but he also has three stages on the Spanish Grand Tour.

In view of his not the greatest versatility, Mark did not conquer victories in the sprint standings of grand tours for a long time, but he managed to solve this problem over time. In 2011, he took the green jersey of the Tour, and two years later he finished the Giro at Maglia Ciclamino.

In the last couple of years, it seemed that problems with mononucleosis and already a fairly advanced age could force Cavendish to end his career, but for now he is still in the ranks. Before the start of 2020, he signed a contract with Bahrain-McLaren.

Considered by many to be the best sprinter in the history of cycling, Cavendish's place in the top 10 is undeniable. In total, he has 146 wins.

7) Tom Boonen (Belgium) In seventh place is Tom Boonen, who can rightfully be called the best rider in Flanders this century.

Boonen at the peak of his career was not only the strongest specialist in the northern classics, but also perhaps the best clean sprinter in the world.

In the 21st century, no one has won Paris-Roubaix more than Tom, the most prestigious monumental classic of all. In 2016, he could have won the Northern Hell for the fifth time and set an absolute race record, but Australian veteran Matthew Hayman sensationally overtook him at the finish line.

Boonen has three titles at Ronda van Vlaanderen. Twice he won this classic with the old route, which was a little easier than the current one, he won his last victory on the new route.

Of course, Boonen also has a world title. He won the group race in Madrid in 2005. After 11 years, in 2016, he was again on the podium, though only in third place. In addition, the Belgian took "Ghent - Wevelgem" (three times) and "E3 Harelbeke" (five times).

At the Tour de France, sprinter Boonen won six stages, to which he added the green jersey in 2007. At the Vuelta, he won two stages.

Boonen did not have enough Italy to rise above. He not only did not win the stages of the Giro, he started only once, but also the Milan-San Remo. At the spring Italian classic, the Belgian was twice in the top three, but he never managed to win it.

Seven monument victories, world title, green jersey, six Grand Loop events and 121 victories in total. This was enough for seventh place.

6) Philippe Gilbert (Belgium) Slightly taller than Boonen was his Walloon compatriot Philippe Gilbert, who not only continues to race, but is still one of the world's best racers at only 38 years of age.

Gilbert is the only cyclist in the 21st century who has won all five monumental classics and won four of them. There are five such victories in total (two at Lombardy and one each at Ronda van Vlaanderen, Paris-Roubaix and Liege-Bastogne-Liège). In terms of the number of victories, he is inferior to Boonen and Cancellara, but surpasses them in versatility.

Gilbert reinforced his monumental successes in other important races. In 2012, he became world champion in the group race, he won four times at the Amstel Gold Race, once at the Strada Bianca, Flesh Wallonne and San Sebastian Classic. All these classics, although not considered monumental, are right behind them in terms of prestige.

In 2011, Philip surpassed the unique record set seven years earlier by Davide Rebellin. Both of them won all three classics of the so-called Ardennes week in one season, but the Belgian added Brabantse Pale to them, which Rebellin did not win.

Gilbert's main successes are related to one-day races, but he also has something to brag about in multi-day races. He won seven stages of the Vuelta, three stages of the Giro and one of the Tour. All in the same phenomenal year of 2011, he tried on the yellow jersey of the leader for one day.

The only thing the Belgian lacks is a win at Milan-San Remo. In his early years, he became her winner, but this is not quite what you need. If the Primavera still submits to Gilbert, he will become the only racer of the 21st century who has won all the existing monumental classics.

5) Chris Froome (Great Britain) In the middle of the top ten, just above or below Gilbert (as you wish) is Chris Froome.

With the Briton from Team INEOS, everything is quite simple. He specializes in multi-day races, he has no achievements in classic one-day races.

Although, Frum still has two Olympic bronzes and one World Championship bronze. He took them in races with a separate start, and to some extent these are also one-day races, albeit in a completely different format.

Okay, let's get to the point.

Froome is one of only three riders to win all three Grand Tours in the 21st century. He has won the Tour de France four times, more people than any other rider in this century. Yes, Armstrong took the Big Loop seven times, including five times in the 21st century, but all these awards were taken away from him.

Frum has seven grand tours in total. He won six directly on the highway, and the seventh was given to him after cabinet proceedings. Victory at the 2011 Vuelta passed from Juan José Cobo to Frum many years after the race ended.

It is important to note that Frum achieved another curious and unique achievement along the way. At one point, he was the reigning winner of all three grand tours. In 2017, he won the Tour and the Vuelta, and in the spring of 2018 he joined the Giro. So the puzzle came together.

Chris has also won seven stages at the Tour, five at the Vuelta and two at the Giro.

Froom also raced very successfully in various weekly races. He won the Criterium Dauphine three times, the Tour of Romandie twice, and a number of other races.

It is obvious that Frum's achievements are clearly lacking in some kind of one-day results. However, you can simply win the "Big Loop" for the fifth time and, due to this, come out on top. True, this will not be easy to do.

Froome has won 46 races throughout his career. The smallest number among all the stars in the top ten.

4) Alberto Contador (Spain) Fourth place went to Alberto Contador, a driver similar to Froome in terms of specialization.

Officially, Contador and Froome have the same number of Grand Tour victories, seven each. But directly on the road, the Spaniard won nine three-week races, and Froome six. It’s just that in the future, due to various doping disqualifications, Contador lost two titles, and Frum, on the contrary, gained one.

Officially, the Spaniard has won the Vuelta three times and the Giro and the Tour twice each. Many may say that Contador often lost to Frum. This is true, but here it must be borne in mind that there is still a slight age difference between them, Contador is three years older. This means that each of them had the peak of their career at different times. For Contador it is 2007-2012, Froome started winning after that.

Contador still has one significant victory over Froome. In 2014, the Spaniard took the Vuelta, leaving behind the British.

At the weekly races, Contador also collected a large number of all kinds of awards and titles. Four victories at the Tour of the Basque Country, two at Paris-Nice and one at Tirreno-Adriatico.

Things are not so fun with one-days, although a little better than Frum's. At one time, Alberto became the winner of "Milan - Turin", and he climbed on the podium of "Flesh Vallon", it was the case.

Contador won the stages of all three Grand Tours, but he has no official wins at the Giro. In 2011, he won two stages during the Italian Grand Tour, but it was those victories that were canceled. In 2008 and 2015, the Spaniard took first place in the overall standings, but without success on some days.

In total, Contador has 68 victories, which is much more than Frum.

3) Vincenzo Nibali (Italy)

In third place is another rider, the third and last to win all three Grand Tours in the 21st century.

In terms of the total number of super stage races won, and he has four of them (two Giro, one Tour and one Vuelta), Nibali is behind Contador and Frum. But he has something they don't have. Contador and Froome are completely useless ephemera, Nibali is much more versatile compared to them.

Two times Vincenzo won the Giro di Lombardia, once Milan-San Remo. The Italian was also close to triumph at Liege - Bastogne - Liege. In 2012, he confidently led and went to victory, but on the last kilometer Maxim Iglinsky unexpectedly passed him.

The Italian had a good chance at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Before the last descent, he was leading the race along with Rafal Maika and Sergio Henao, but then there was a blockage that not only deprived Nibali of all chances, but also led to a rather serious injury.

To the list of Nibali's accomplishments must be added seven stages of the Giro, six stages of the Tour and one stage of the Vuelta. He has won the Tirreno-Adriatico overall standings twice, and he has won the important French one-day Brittany Classic.

Now Nibali is already over 35 years old, but he does not think to give up his positions yet. If he had won Liege-Bastogne-Liège in 2012, he would have been in first place in the rankings. All the grandees + three different monuments - these competitors would not have been able to kill.

2) Alejandro Valverde (Spain) In second place in the ranking is one of the phenomenal centenarians, not only of the 21st century, but of the entire history of cycling.

Yes, Alejandro Valverde cannot compete with Froome, Contador and Nibali in terms of the total number of victories on the grand tours, but he has his own trump cards, which even outweigh.

Four times the famous Spaniard won Liege - Bastogne - Liege, five times Flèche Wallonne (absolute record), seven times was the winner of the group races at the World Championships (absolute record), seven times the winner of the Vuelta overall standings (absolute record), won the overall world tour five times (absolute record).

Valverde has only won one Grand Tour, the Vuelta in 2009, but his Super Race results are still very significant. He became the winner of all three and won the stages at all three, at his native Vuelta there were as many as 12 of them. He has three victories at the Vuelta Catalunya, two at the Criterium Dauphine, one at the Tour of the Basque Country. In total, he has 127 wins. Incredible figure for a racer with a good finish, but definitely not a sprinter.

It would take a very long time to list all of Valverde's titles, it's easier to tell what he still lacks. There are not enough victories in the Giro di Lombardy and the Amstel Gold Race, in both of these classics he won the prize twice. Well, the Olympic gold in the group race is also lacking. It is the Olympics in Tokyo that motivates the almost 40-year-old rider to continue his career. Now he will have to wait another year.

1) Fabian Cancellara (Switzerland)

In the first place in the rating is Spartak (not Moscow), aka Swiss Express, aka Fabian Cancellara.

Yes, the first place in the hard struggle with Nibali and Valverde was taken by a rider who did not qualify for the overall standings of the Grand Tours. But we have a lot of reasons to put Cancellara in the first place.

Three times Fabian won the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix, four times he took gold at the world championships in the race with a time trial, twice he became the Olympic champion in the same type of program. But Cancellara also took Milan-San Remo once, and he also holds the record for the number of victories at Strada Bianca (three). Three times he also won E3 Harelbeke.

Cancellara is the author of a unique achievement, which has no analogues in modern history. Between 2010 and 2014, he rode 13 monumental classics and finished in the top three in 12 of them. The only time he did not appear in prizes was only because of a fall and retirement.

This is despite the fact that it is much harder to show such stability on one-day events than on multi-day events. Tactics decides too much, and sometimes it's just luck.

At the Tour de France, Cancellara won seven stages and spent more than ten days in the yellow jersey. At the Vuelta, he has three victories. There are no victories at the stages of the Giro, but he visited the Italian Grand Tour only once, already at the end of his career.

Fabian also performed well during the weeks. Despite the fact that he was not a mountain racer, he managed to win the overall standings of the Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour of Switzerland. This happened in those years when the route was a little easier.

Many people complain that Peter Sagan is held very tight at the races and not allowed to do anything. So, at one time, Cancellara was patronized much tougher. Letting him go literally 10 meters almost always meant losing the race. He inspired real terror in his competitors in his best years.

At the peak of his career, Cancellara's Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix were reminiscent of some of the junior races of 2018 starring Remco Evenepoel.

Cancellara has a total of 87 pro victories. He finished his career beautifully in 2016, immediately after winning the time trial race at the Rio Olympics.

  2. Select Authentication from the menu on the left. Click Add Identity Provider .

  3. Select Facebook from the drop-down list of identity providers. Paste in the Application ID and Secret values obtained earlier.

The secret will be saved as an application parameter associated with the slot named FACEBOOK_PROVIDER_AUTHENTICATION_SECRET . You can later update this setting to use Key Vault links if you want to manage the secret in Azure Key Vault.

  4. If this is the first identity provider configured for the application, you will also be prompted to complete the App Service Authentication Settings section. Without this, you will not be able to proceed to the next step.

The settings in this section determine how your application reacts to unauthenticated requests, and the default settings will redirect all login requests through the new provider. You can change this behavior now or adjust these settings later on the main screen Authentication by clicking the Edit button next to the Authentication Settings section. For more information about these options, see Authentication Flow.

  5. (Optional) Click the Next: Scopes button and add any scopes required by the application. They will be requested at login time for browser-based streams.

  6. Click the button Add .
