How does WhatsApp use your phone number? That’s probably the number one question on everyone’s minds, as the messaging giant continues to dominate people’s mobile devices. As a Facebook-owned entity, privacy-conscious people wouldn’t be blamed for wondering what part their phone number plays in WhatsApp.
QUICK ANSWER
On WhatsApp, your phone number acts as your unique account identifier. On other services, you would have a username such as johnsmith223, but WhatsApp instead identifies you by your phone number. This means the service is unusable without a functioning mobile number, and you cannot hide your number from your WhatsApp contacts.
JUMP TO KEY SECTIONS
WhatsApp doesn’t assign you a unique number, so your WhatsApp phone number is just your mobile phone number. But you can view the number associated with your account by going to Settings and tapping your user picture to open your profile.
At the bottom of the screen is the number registered to your WhatsApp account. But seriously, who forgets their mobile phone number?
If you swap the SIM card on your phone and start using a new number, you will have to change the number associated with your WhatsApp account. Otherwise, your previous chat history and media will become inaccessible, and you’ll start again from scratch.
First, put the new SIM card into your phone. Then on WhatsApp, go to Settings—>Account—>Change number.
Now type in the old phone number and the new phone number. Don’t forget to include the international dialing codes.
You will receive a confirmation that you are transferring from one number to another. Select whether or not you would like your contacts to be notified of your new number.
Finally, tap DONE at the bottom of the screen to have an SMS message sent to the new number to verify it belongs to you.
First, you need to backup your entire chat archive on the old phone. On Android, this is done via Google Drive. On iPhone, it is backed up to iCloud. Head to Settings—>Chats—>Chat Backup and tap Back Up.
Now on the new phone, install WhatsApp, and when it asks you for a mobile number, enter it. It will also invite you to restore a previous backup, and your messaging history will eventually appear. Just follow the on-screen prompts. On Android, ensure you’re logged into the Google account where your backup is stored. On iPhone, make sure you’re already logged into the iCloud account where the backup is stored.
When setting up WhatsApp on your phone, you may receive a message telling you that WhatsApp has blocked your number. WhatsApp says they block any numbers which violate their terms of service.
This can include sending spam, adding excessive people to groups, creating too many groups (although they don’t say how many you’re allowed in total), and various other unspecified behaviors that the system may flag.
If you believe your number has been mistakenly blocked, WhatsApp advises you to email them, and they will review your case.
Only if someone has added you to their WhatsApp contact list. The person needs your phone number to do this, which you would have to give them. Once they have added you to WhatsApp, your phone number will appear along with your name.
There is no unique WhatsApp-assigned number. Only your mobile phone number is used on WhatsApp.
No, this is currently not possible.
Install WhatsApp, and when it prompts you to enter a mobile number, put in the number you think may be already connected to an account. If the phone number is being used with a WhatsApp account, it will tell you.
You can’t. However, since they need your number to start messaging you on WhatsApp, they already have it.
So why bother hiding it?

2. Register the new phone number you want to be associated with your WhatsApp account.

You'll also need to set up an entirely new WhatsApp account.

Now that you have received your temporary phone number, you can proceed and install the WhatsApp app from the Google Play store.
If you are trying to set up two different WhatsApp accounts on the same device, here is a guide that can help you.
Open WhatsApp and go to a screen where you will be asked to enter a phone number.
Make sure select the country from where you generated your temporary phone number. Copy your phone number from the 2ndLine app, paste it on the whatsapp screen and press Next .
WhatsApp will start connecting to the service and you can immediately get a verification code in the 2ndLine app, otherwise you might get an error message.
In case of error, select ' Call me ' and wait for a phone call or voice message from WhatsApp containing a verification code.
In our case, we received a voicemail, after which the WhatsApp account was immediately verified.
That's all you need to do! When the process is complete and your virtual number is ready to go, you can use your truly anonymous WhatsApp account to prank your friends, talk to loved ones in a private chat, or keep a separate window for business conversations.
Obviously, the use of a temporary number is in no way limited to WhatsApp, so you can use it for free to create additional accounts for almost any service.
Are you rushing to 2ndLine to create your virtual number and get an anonymous whatsapp account right now?
The 2nd line app above seems to have been geo-restricted for some users recently. If you are unable to download the application, then there are various alternatives available in the market at present, which you can download using the links below. Most of these apps work similarly to the 2nd line, when you create an account, you are given a temporary phone number, which you can then register with Whatsapp. Let's look at some alternatives to the 2nd line application.
Note: While US users can also use the apps listed for global users, unfortunately it won't work the other way around. However, you can use a VPN to run US-only apps, or even download .apk from third-party sources.
But these practices come with their own risks and setbacks, so only resort to American alternatives if none of the global alternatives work for you.
Note: When you use Burner, your phone number will remain on your device until you release it, in favor of a new virtual number. They also have a subscription-based model and only offer a 7-day trial, but that should be enough to activate your second WhatsApp.
Note: Hhed also has a 3-day trial after which you will need to get a subscription if you want to continue using your virtual phone number.
Note: Both apps above usually work, but at best have tons of ads and mediocre customer support. Proceed with caution and perhaps try them as a last resort if nothing on the list works for you.
There are many disadvantages and, frankly, risks associated with virtual numbers. Let's take a brief look at each of them.
Virtual numbers are not associated with specific users for a long time unless you pay for them. Therefore, if you plan to miss a payment, keep in mind that you will have to constantly use the number on a daily basis in order to keep it active and always with you.
Because most virtual numbers are reused and assigned to new users, you risk getting a number that is already in use.
If a previous user signed up for WhatsApp, you will not be able to use that account unless you delete the previous one.
Another serious risk is that someone else can access your Whatsapp account. If you get rid of your virtual number and someone else signs up for Whatsapp using it, you won't be able to get your account back. They will be able to see all your saved chats, as well as data from backups, if any. What's more, any contact that tries to reach you will be redirected to the new user.
Few virtual number services come from reliable sources such as Google. Even then, breaches happen that can lead to your data being stolen. Considering that most of these vendors are credit card dependent and do not have a reputation for their name, the prospect of exposing your payment information to such vendors becomes increasingly risky.
If you're concerned about invitation calls, random numbers, and ads, a landline subscription will help you bypass all of these drawbacks.
