- Go to your Instagram profile, and click on the + button in the top right corner. Choose Story from the list of options.
- Select the image or video you want to add music to from your camera roll. Click on the sticker icon on the top of your screen.
- Tap on the Music sticker.
- You’ll get a list of trending music based on the kind of content you consume. Choose your preferred track from the Instagram music library or search for a specific song using the search bar at the top. Click on the play icon next to the song name if you want to hear the music before selecting it for your video.
- After selecting the track, you’ll see a prompt to adjust the part of the music you’d like to take up for your video. Use the slider to select the exact portion you want, and click on Done at the top right corner.
- You can also choose how you want the music sticker to appear on your stories—as the song name or as lyrics in different fonts.
And just like that, you’ve successfully added music to your Instagram story for your audience to enjoy!
[#TOC2]How to add music to Instagram Reels[#TOC2]Think about Instagram reels, and the first thing that will come to your mind is trends. And what are trends without the music that makes those trends viral in the first place? Besides, many creators who create original reels with talking-head videos use music in the background to cash in on trendy music, make the reel more catchy, and rake in more views.
Here’s how you can do it:
- Open your profile and click on the + icon at the top right. Choose Reel from the list of options. Add your video from the camera roll or record one using the camera feature.
- Once your video is ready, tap on Audio on the right side of your screen.
- Choose from the recommended music tracks—many of which are trending music that can help you get more views. You can also search for your preferred track in the Instagram music library using the search bar.
Use the play button beside each song to hear the track before using it in your reel.
- Once you select your music, use the slider to adjust the exact part of the music you want to use in your video and click on Done in the top right corner (just like for stories).
- Click on Next to watch your video with the music.
- Click on the music icon at the top if you want to add a voiceover to your video.
- Tap on Voiceover at the bottom.
- Begin recording your audio by clicking on the red button in the middle. Once you’re satisfied, click Done.
- You’ll see the Original Audio, Camera Audio, and Voiceover volume levels. Use the slider to adjust the volumes according to your liking and hit Done at the top right.
- Once you’re satisfied with the video, click on Next at the bottom right.
Choose your cover from the video frames, or add one from your camera roll. Add an exciting caption and find relevant hashtags—and you’re ready to take your reel live!
[#TOC3]How to add music to Instagram video feed posts[#TOC3]While Instagram allows you to add music to your Instagram feed videos (within 60 seconds), there’s a difference between editing tools available on reels and stories vs. feed posts longer than 60 seconds. On stories and reels, you can add music through the in-app Instagram editor. But with feed posts, when you select the video you want to upload or record using the in-app camera, you won’t have an option to add music.
However, you can easily add sound effects, and non-Instagram music through an easy-to-use and feature-rich video editor like VEED.
Later in this article, we’ll also show you some platforms you can use to find third-party music for your feed videos.
Let’s look at how to add music to post on Instagram through VEED’s online editor:
- Sign up if you haven’t already, or log into VEED. Click on Create new project.
- Upload your video, drag and drop or enter a YouTube URL for the video you want to add music to. You can even record a fresh video from within the app.
- Go to the Media tab on the left-hand side menu. Click on Upload to import the track from your device.
- The audio will get added to your video, and you’ll see the track right below the video in the timeline at the bottom. Click on the track, and you’ll get a list of audio options on the left side of your video. From here, you can adjust the volume, speed, and duration and replace audio.
- (Optional) Customize your video to make it more attention-grabbing. Add sound waves from the Elements tab, add subtitles, resize your video, add text, progress bars, etc. You can also resize your video for all Instagram post sizes with a click of a button using VEED’s canvas resize.
- Once you’re satisfied with the video, click on Export in the top right corner, choose your resolution and click on Export again to download and share your video on Instagram.
If you’re not adding or editing your music from Instagram’s in-app editor, you can use external, third-party editing tools. However, Instagram bans videos with unlicensed music. So, it’s best to use an in-app library or a reliable source to get music, so your time and effort creating amazing content don’t get wasted.

put it on video in Stories and posts
To add music to Instagram Stories in Russia, the “Music” sticker finally appeared (and you can make Reels with music). And you can add music to any Instagram posts (photos and videos) using video editing applications or special applications for creating beautiful Stories.
Content:
- How to add music to Instagram Stories for free using the Music sticker
- How to Add Music to Instagram Videos in Stories and Posts (Android and iPhone Apps)
- How and where to download free music for Instagram photos and videos without copyright
It's best if the music is copyright-free. Especially if you have a large account and a lot of followers. And if the account is personal and “for friends”, then there is also a way to overlay any song so that the post or Stories are not blocked for copyright infringement.
How to add music to Instagram Stories for free using a sticker
Add music to photos and videos in Instagram Stories is very easy with a sticker. Finally, in June 2021, he appeared in Russia.
But attaching music to Stories in applications, which are discussed later in the article, is also very simple.
Select the track you want.
- Open the Instagram Stories camera. Take a photo / video or upload from the gallery.
- Press the "Sticker" button
- Select the Music sticker. You can search for a specific song, or choose by genre/mood/popular. You can listen to the song and rewind to the desired passage before adding music to Instagram Story.
- You can change the excerpt of the song that will be on your Stories with music and choose the design (sticker with the name of the track, the text of the song that appears, etc.).
The "Music" sticker for photos and videos in Instagram Stories is now available in Russia. If you haven't got it yet, update Instagram.
Add music to photos, videos and Stories easily with video editing apps: Videoleap (iPhone) and InShot (iPhone and Android) .
How to add music to Instagram video in Stories and posts (photos and videos)
The easiest way to add music to a photo or video is to turn on the music on your phone or computer while recording. But the sound quality will not be very good. And the video itself can be blocked on Instagram due to copyright.
And even if you bought the song officially (in iTunes, for example), and not just downloaded it for free, it will still be blocked. Because you are buying for personal listening. And the rights to use in public videos are much more expensive.
Videoleap application: how to insert music on photos and videos (iPhone)
In this application, you can add music to Instagram posts (photos, videos) and Stories for free. Or, directly in the application, record voice acting from above.
First upload the desired photo or video. Then four options to add music:
- Press the red plsik at the end of the video and download the desired audio file on your phone.
- If you have a Mac, then the song can be downloaded on your computer and then sent via Airdrop to your phone. If at the same time you have the desired video open in Videoleap, then you can immediately add it to this video via Airdrop.
- Press the "Audio" button. Then choose "Music" or "Sound Effects". The choice will be from a library of music and sound effects without copyright.
- Press the "Voice" button. After the red round button and start talking, the recording will start.
We recommend that you embed music on photos and videos in posts and Stories only without copyright. This is a guarantee that Instagram will not block for copyright infringement. But if you have a small personal account, closed and you are sure that no one will complain about you (suddenly someone out of resentment wants to block you) - there is a way to make sure that Instagram does not recognize a popular track.
In Videoleap, you need to click on the desired audio track (or on a video that has sound). Then the "Audio" button and after "Change. Tone". So Instagram algorithms will not recognize original music and will not block it for copyright infringement. But if suddenly someone complains, then a person will check.
InShot App: How to Add Music to Photos and Videos for Instagram Posts and Stories (Android and iPhone)
You can add music to Inshot for free on both Android and iPhone.
First upload the desired photo or video. Then three options to put music :
1. Press the "Music" button and then "Songs". Here you can choose to overlay music from a catalog of free music without copyright, extract from another video, add from iTunes (on iPhone), or insert a sound effect.
To select from the songs already downloaded and stored in "files" on your phone:
"Imported"
2. If you have a Mac, you can download the song on your computer and then send it to your phone via Airdrop. If at the same time you have the desired video open in InShot, then you can immediately insert it into this video via Airdrop.
3. Press the "Music" button and then "Record". Allow the application to access the microphone and start recording background speech.
StoryBeat app: how to add music to Instagram Stories (Android and iPhone)
StoryBeat app is tailored specifically for Instagram Stories. And it not only allows you to add music to photos or videos for Instagram, but also has a catalog of cool video effects.
Click Add Music to Photo or Video. Download what you need.
A round button with a plus sign will appear at the bottom:
- You can add music from the free catalog - "Search Music". You can select the excerpt you want to attach. After that, you will have a sticker with the name of the song at the bottom of the screen. It can be deleted by clicking on the cross.
- Upload "a song from Apple Music" (iPhone) or "Add a song from your library" (Android).
- Add sound effect.
- Record a song - can be used to record a voice over a photo / video (iPhone).
Where can I download free music for Instagram?
If it is very important for you that your video is guaranteed not to be deleted, add copyright-free music to the video. For example, this YouTube channel often posts such music. It can be downloaded, all music is free (links are in the description of the video). On our channel, we use songs from there.
The free music library is also available in the video editing and Stories apps.
Adding music to photos, videos in Instagram publications is more difficult than in Stories or, for example, in Tik Tok. You need to download music without copyright, overlay it in a separate application, and only then upload it to your Account. But still, you can make a post or Stories with music for free and not be afraid that you will be blocked if you post photos and videos with music to your account.
