Why Was My Instagram Account Banned?

To use the platform without interruptions, you need to respect the Terms of Use and Community Guidelines—which is a rule of thumb for most other online community apps such as Twitter, Reddit, and Grindr.

You can be banned from Instagram for:

  • Using an automation tool to like/comment on content aggressively or to follow/unfollow users
  • Buying likes and fake followers
  • Selling or buying accounts
  • Creating duplicate accounts
  • Posting inappropriate content
  • Infringing on someone's creations
  • Using Instagram if you are under 13 years old
  • Selling or promoting illegal products or services
  • Using broken or banned hashtags
  • Writing more than 60 comments in an hour—or 30 if your account is new
  • Sending the same messages or posting the same comments
  • Using violent, aggressive, or offensive language

Instagram can also ban you if another user reports your account—even if you did nothing wrong.

How To Know if Instagram Suspended or Banned My Account

Instagram may be strict about its rules, but it also wants to keep its users. If the platform detects behavior that goes against its policy, you won’t be banned right away. Your account will be suspended first. The suspension can last from one to 48 hours. It all depends on what you did to get banned. You can appeal the suspension to get it lifted more quickly.

There are also three types of bans on Instagram:

  1. Blocked action—If you like content repeatedly or follow and unfollow users, Instagram can block that action for a certain time period. You can take more than 140 actions per day. Such repetitive activity can come from a spam account, which is why the platform issues a warning by blocking the action
  2. Shadowban—When you use banned tags or post too much, your account can be shadowbanned. You’ll be able to use your account, but your posts won’t be visible in the Explore section or on hashtag pages
  3. Ban—If you violate the terms or repeat the same action that got you suspended, you can be banned for good. In this case, you won’t be able to use the same username, email address, or even the same IP address to access the platform

How To Tell if Your Instagram Is Banned

If Instagram banned your account, you won’t be able to log in, like, comment, or share photos. All the activity on the app will be blocked.

You’ll also get a notification—a message will pop up on the screen informing you that you’ve been blocked. You can ignore it or click on the button that encourages you to tell Instagram if it made a mistake.

How To Get Unbanned From Instagram

If your account gets blocked, you can:

  • Wait for the ban period to pass
  • Contact Instagram

To discuss your problem with a representative, you can click on the Tell Us or Appeal buttons on the ban notification. If you only have the Learn More option, choose that. Click on Let Us Know at the end of the notice.

You can also go to the Help Center or call 1-650-543-4800.

Don’t forget to review your hashtags and remove autobots if you use them so you don’t get your account blocked again.

How To Know If Instagram Banned My Account

Most users have faced a rough time when they get their Instagram accounts banned. It starts with an Instagram notification telling you your account has been banned. Also, it could be that you were using your Instagram for various activities, and you get the “Action Blocked” message limiting you from your activities.

When your account gets banned, the message will explain whether the block is permanent or temporary.

If it’s temporary, the message will contain the hours after which you can access your account. You may get banned to avoid using features like commenting or posting.

Why Instagram Banned My Account?

Getting banned is one thing, and understanding why that happened is another. Everyone complains that Instagram wrongfully banned their accounts, but today’s guide explains the common factors that Instagram considers before banning an account.

Take a look at the causes below.

Reason #1: You Posted Inappropriate Content

Instagram is very keen on what you post to ensure it keeps every user safe on the platform regardless of age.

If your account is flagged for posting inappropriate content, such as sexual or nudity, it will be banned.

Inappropriate content goes against Instagram’s community guidelines and violates its terms of use.

Reason #2: Promoting Violence

Any account found to advocate for violence gets flagged.

It could be you are posting weapons, advocating self-injury, showing bloody content, or advocating using illegal substances.

Anything you post on Instagram shouldn’t be traumatizing.

You must consider everyone’s emotions before posting something.

Reason #3: Using Banned Hashtags

Instagram bans some hashtags that it deems inappropriate, violent, or harmful.

Such hashtags include those advocating for violence and other radical movements that can cause chaos.

If you post something and associate it with such hashtags, you would be risking your account.

Reason #4: Copyright Issues

One thing that can immediately make your account get banned is using someone’s content as your own.

Instagram is stringent on copyrights, and when your account gets reported for violating that, your post will get removed, and your account will be reviewed and probably banned.

Reason #5: Using Bots

Some Instagram users try to use bots to automate following users, commenting, and liking posts.

There is a limit to the activities you can do per a given time.

When Instagram suspects that you’ve integrated a bot to run your account, it will ban you from the platform.

How To Get Unbanned from Instagram

It’s never good news to get your Instagram account banned. Nonetheless, before you enter panic mode, there are various solutions that you can try to get your Instagram account unbanned.

Method #1: Be Patient

If your account got banned for 24 hours, there is no harm in staying away from Instagram and waiting for the period to end.

Once the period ends, you can then access your account and be keen to avoid getting banned again in the future.

Method #2: Report a Problem

If you can still access your account, consider reporting the problem to Instagram using the steps below.

  1. Open your Instagram account.
  2. Tap on your picture to open your Profile page.
  3. Click the three dots at the top and select “Help”.
  4. Click the “Report a problem” option.
  5. Tap the “Something Isn’t Working” option.
  6. Fill out and submit the provided form.

Instagram will then reach out to you.

Method #3: Contact Instagram

Click the “Tell Us” option when you get the “Action Blocked” message indicating your account has been blocked. That way, you can follow the on-screen instructions and offer the required details to get your account back.

Note that you may be required to verify your details, including sending a selfie.

The world of social networks has its own rules. And this world clearly does not like it when they are violated. Especially Facebook. So he created a bot that controls the order in Instagram. The funny thing is that the algorithm of its work is unknown. So, the block can be caught even by accident.

If the robot doesn't like your content, then the account is automatically checked. Then it goes to Facebook representatives for consideration. And they already choose the type of blocking.

Consider also how conditions have changed since the pandemic. In 2021, user requests are processed more slowly by the administration. Plus, there is a risk that the decision will not be in your direction. For example, if the administration used to check applications within 3-4 hours (the maximum review time is a day), now we are seeing a different story. An application for account recovery can be processed from a week to two months.

The term for blocking an account by the administration can vary from three hours to two weeks. At the same time, there is a risk that you will lose your account forever. The duration of the ban and the likelihood of recovery depends on how serious the violations were.

There are three types of blocking:

  1. Random: well, who doesn't make mistakes? Such moments happen often. But in this case, the account is quickly returned with a cover letter and an apology.
  2. Temporary/Shadow Banned: User account is being blocked by Instagram due to questionable activity.
  3. Permanently blocked: the user account is blocked and cannot be restored.

If your account has received a permanent ban, then you may no longer be able to access your account. A permanent ban only occurs if the user commits an extreme violation of the terms. Such violations, for example, include the distribution of prohibited content. The entire list of rules can be found here.

We found out the reasons, we are moving on to solving the problem. It is clear that unlocking an account is possible only in the event of an accidental or temporary ban.

Previously, you could restore your account through a computer or mobile device. It was enough just to write to technical support, fill out a standard account recovery form and wait for the administration's decision. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way now.

Here are two ways to recover your account:

  1. Solve the problem through the official mobile application.
  2. Contact Facebook support chat.

Now for more details.

The procedure looks simple. A detailed description can be found on the support site.

  1. Open Instagram on your mobile device.
  2. The login screen has a "Help Login" section located below the "Login" button. We select it.
  3. Alternatively, there is a "Need more help?" option located in the upper right corner. Select it and follow the next instructions.
  4. To unblock an account, you must provide information about the company or your own (if the account is personal). Then enter the current e-mail to which the account is linked.
  5. If the email address is correct and you have done everything correctly, you should receive an email with further instructions. If not, we recommend checking your spam folder. The letter could be there.

You can find a short form for filling in information about yourself or the company here.

In this option, at 99.9% you will need to upload two or three photos from your account page without processing. If there are no such photos, forget it. Your account will not be returned. Uploading a photo to pass off as your own will not work, because the verification is carried out using EXIF technology.

Here the percentage is lower, but you may also be asked to send a photo with a sheet that will contain personal information and a verification code. Where to get this code? It will be sent to your mail.

This method will only work in the case of temporary blocking. Please note that three temporary bans will be followed by a permanent ban. Instagram sees that the "warnings" pass by and deletes the profile without the possibility of recovery.

Important! It is possible that you log into the application, but see only a message about blocking your account. Nothing else happens. In this case, we are looking for a technical support window and trying to contact the operator directly.

Here it is based on Facebook-enabled chat. Link to start. It's simple:

  1. Click "Get Support".
  1. Next, Facebook will offer to “Select the object for which you need help”.
  1. After that, you need to indicate the problem. You need to choose from the proposed list. But do not bother, choose the one that you like. Next, you will be asked to describe the real problem, attaching a photo or screen to it - “Give us information that will help us investigate the problem.”
  2. Next, click on the “Start Chat” option.

Support Facebook will email you within three minutes. He will guide you and answer your questions. It will help you access your account and tell you what to do next.

  1. Specify the current e-mail to which you have constant access, and do not forget to write down the passwords in your notes.
  2. Do not forget to link your contact and current phone number to your account. It will receive SMS with a code to confirm your rights to the page.
  3. Enable two-factor authentication. Two minutes of time, and the data and the page will be safe.
  4. Link your Instagram account to Facebook. It is also important that the page must have your photo. This will add chances when removing the ban and help you get your account back faster.
  5. If this is a business page, and not a personal one, then having documents confirming this fact will help.
  6. Do not download the application for cheating and generally keep an eye on the applications on your phone.
  7. And don't break the ground rules of Instagram. A link to them is in the first paragraph on recommendations for recovery.

Don't make life difficult for yourself by breaking Instagram laws. Do not be indifferent to the recommendations above. And you will be happy and not blocked personal online album.

How to unlock an account / Unlock an Instagram account / General / SocialKit

In the course of working with Instagram, under certain circumstances, you may encounter a so-called permanent ban. This is a blocking in which access to the Instagram account is limited indefinitely, however, the account itself is not deleted from the Instagram database, i.e. if desired, access to it can be restored in most cases.

First of all, you need to decide on the type of permanent blocking. The type is directly related to the type of offense.

1). For suspicious activity. A typical variant of permanent blocking, which is issued by the robot when the likes, subscribers and other indicators are too actively boosted to your account, as well as when recommendations are not followed when automating the process of placing likes, signatures and other things to other users of the social network.

2). For content complaints from users. Issued sometimes by humans, sometimes also by robots. This is usually the result of regular complaints from users about the regular publication of inappropriate materials or about the account as a whole. In the first case, the robot often simply removes the invalid image with a corresponding notification. In the second case, if the decision is made by an Instagram employee regarding the account as a whole, then it will be a complete blocking of it, and not individual media.

3). For copyright infringement. The most difficult type of blocking. Instagram is the most fiercely protective of legal entities and objects of copyright. If individuals or legal entities repeatedly report violations of their copyrights, the page will most likely be blocked by an Instagram employee.

The first type of lock is the easiest to remove. This usually takes no more than 2-3 days. It is this example that we will consider in the case below, since this is the most common type of permanent blocking.

The second type of blocking is more difficult to remove. Most likely, you will need to prove the same thing in a circle for a long time and tediously to different Instagram employees responsible for solving such issues. It is possible that in addition to the photo with the code, you will need to send some other scans of documents.

The third type of blocking is extremely difficult to remove and, alas, not always. Everything will depend on who acts as the object whose copyright has been violated. If this is an individual, then the probability of removing the block after a long and tedious correspondence is higher. If it is a well-known corporation or brand, then the chances are low.

    TYPICAL PERMANENT BLOCK

    1. Log in to the official Instagram client on your smartphone (iOS or Android - it doesn't matter) and try to log into the blocked account using your username and password. If the account is indeed blocked, then on the smartphone screen you will see something like the following message, as shown in the screenshot below.

If you successfully logged in, you may have encountered an error from Instagram (see below).

An example of a blocked notification when logging into an Instagram account from an Android smartphone.

    2. In the pop-up window, click the " Learn More " button, then you will be taken to the Instagram help page, select the link " tell us about it ", as shown below.

Point to send a request to restore access to your account in the Instagram help system.

In some cases, instead of the page listed above, another page may be displayed where there is no such link. This usually happens when the reason for blocking was described in p2 and p3 above. Then, to apply for an unlock, you can use this link .

    3. Clicking on this link will open a form for making a request to unblock your account. To the question " This account is used to represent a company, product or service "click" No ". After that, you can randomly fill in the field" Full name and surname ". But it is important to fill in the following three fields exactly: indicate the exact login of the account, the E-Mail associated with it and the country from which you send this request. The country of registration of the account does not play a role.If you do not remember the associated E-Mail, but the blocked account was once promoted in SocialKit and you have a SocialKit database file where the required account is present, then you can spy the associated E-Mail in account details via double click or find mention of E-Mail in logs.0168

IMPORTANT! You must have access (login and password) to the E-Mail associated with the Instagram account. Otherwise, you will not be able to complete the procedure for unlocking your Instagram account.

An example of filling out a form to restore access to a blocked Instagram account.

    4. After all the fields are filled in, press the button " Send ". If you did not make a mistake in the email address and this address is working, then within a minute (depending on the loading of the Instagram service), an email with further instructions will be sent to E-Mail, as shown in the example below.

Instagram's response to the generated request to unblock the account.

From the content of the email, it is clear that Instagram wants to get a reaction from you, which is difficult to automate. It has been experimentally established that the developers are not interested in your face and there is no real verification of whether you are in the photo or someone else is not carried out. Such an unlocking system is made in order to exclude the fact of mass automated unlocking of profiles.

    5. So, if you are trying to unblock your page and are not worried about your photo going into the Instagram database, then you can safely follow the steps outlined in the letter, namely:

    - Take a clean sheet paper (for example, a notebook in a box or a standard A4).

    - Write with a dark marker large and legible the code indicated in the letter, below the name and surname in accordance with what you indicated when filling out the form in paragraph 3, even below the account login. If writing with a pen, then circle the code and other data several times so that they are clearly visible.

    - Take a picture of yourself so that your face is clearly visible, as well as your hand with a piece of paper.

    - Rename the resulting image so that the file name contains the account login and the code from the letter through the character " _ ", for example, " dmitry_sidorov_18181.jpeg ". The file extension must be " .jpeg " and nothing else. Otherwise, the letter may not reach.

    - Reply to the letter received from Instagram, and attach your jpeg file as an attachment. Nothing more can be written in the letter. Send a letter and be patient for 2-3 days.

IMPORTANT! The image with the code must be sent only by return mail, because for each such unblocking request, Instagram creates a special unique email address.

If you don't want to send your face, you can do the trick - send someone else's face with a piece of paper embedded with the code from the letter. Oddly enough, this trick works great.

    - Search the Internet for a male or female photo (depending on what data you entered when filling out the account recovery request in paragraph 3 above) with a piece of paper in hand. Don't take high quality studio photos. Look for photos taken with the selfie cameras of phones, tablets. In social networks (for example, VKontakte) there are a lot of such photos - the so-called "signs". An example is shown below - we have hidden the author's face.

Selecting an already finished photo for further manipulations in Photoshop.

    - With the help of a graphic editor (we used Photoshop), remove everything superfluous from a piece of paper in the original photo so that a blank sheet of paper remains - you need to paste the code from the letter into it.

An example of a photo taken by us for later editing.

Only a piece of paper with a code, full name and login is important in this photo.

    - Write with a dark marker large and legible the code indicated in the letter, below the name and surname in accordance with what you indicated when filling out the form in paragraph 3, even below the account login. If writing with a pen, then circle the code and other data several times so that they are clearly visible. Then take the sheet in your hand and take a picture of it with your smartphone. Try to arrange the lighting so that it roughly matches the original photo.

Editing process: combining two photos in Photoshop.

The author's face and login are intentionally hidden for the article. You don't have to.

    - Match the original (foreign) photo with your photo as carefully as possible. The data from your piece of paper should be on a piece of paper in the original (someone else's) photo and it should look as natural as possible.

The original image and the photo of the sheet embedded in it with the code and login.

The author's face and login are intentionally hidden for the article. You don't have to.

    - Save the resulting image so that the file name contains the account login and the code from the letter through the symbol " _ ", for example, " dmitry_sidorov_18181.jpeg ".

In our example, we got the following letter:

Forming a response letter with a photo for Instagram.

We used a fake photo with an embedded image of a sheet with the code:

The image file must be attached as an attachment to the response letter.

The reaction from Instagram was not long in coming - on the second day the account was already unblocked.

Instagram notification that the account was unblocked - the fake photo worked.

As you can see, you don’t need to make any special efforts to unlock your Instagram account, everything is quite simple. If you plan to unblock several accounts in this way, then do not forget to change the original (foreign) photos and IP addresses from which you send requests to unblock.

If you haven't received a positive response after sending the email with the code, don't lose hope. The human factor plays a big role in unlocking. Continue to request an unlock through the appropriate form and send response emails with the code.

    ERROR PERMANENT BLOCK

As you know, Instagram is famous for a large number of errors that occur when working with certain functions of the social network. Problems have not bypassed even the algorithm for issuing and removing permanent locks.
