How to create voice chat in telegram

How to Host a Voice Chat in Your Telegram Channel

Voice chats are a great way to stay connected with your friends and family. And, just like many other social media platforms, Telegram has developed a Voice Chat feature that enables you to do just that.

In this article, we explain how voice chats work and show you how to host one in your Telegram group or channel.

How Does Telegram Voice Chat Work?

Voice chats are a feature on Telegram that allows you to create voice chatrooms in groups and channels where you’re an admin.

Telegram launched the feature globally in December 2020 and it brought an entirely new dimension of communication on the platform. Telegram released a major voice chat update in 2021 with new capabilities that improve the overall voice chat experience.

The update, dubbed “Voice Chat 2.0”, allows you to record voice chats, raise a hand, and create unique invite links that other friends and channel members can click on to join your chatroom right away.

But that’s not all there is to the Voice Chat 2.0. The update also allows invited participants to choose to join a chatroom with their personal profile or appear as one of their channels. This comes in handy for users who want to participate in a voice chat without drawing too much attention to their personal accounts.

If you want to add members to your voice chat, tap on Invite Members in the chat window. Another window will be opened and you’ll be presented with options to either send a Speaker link (for hosts) or Listener links.

The difference between the Speaker and Listener links is that Listeners are automatically muted on joining while Speakers aren’t.

Other group or channel members can also join your chatroom by tapping on the special bar at the top of the group or channel that shows who is talking at the moment.

How to Keep Control in Your Voice Chat

Voice chats are a great way to engage with your friends and followers, but it can be difficult when someone is talking over another person or background noise interrupts them. Here are some tips for keeping control of the conversation:

  • If you’re having guest speakers on the chat, make sure to send them the Speaker link so you won’t have to scroll to unmute them when they join.
  • Invite other participants with the Listener link.
  • Encourage participants who wish to speak to use the hand-raise feature, so you can easily find and unmute them.
  • If you’re hosting an exclusive chat, be cautious about how you share your invite link as non-channel members can gain access.

Why You May Want to Host a Live Voice Chat

There are several reasons why you may want to host a voice chat in your Telegram group or channel.

Connect With Your Followers on a Deeper Level

Voice chats can be very engaging as they offer more interactive communication than the traditional text-based posts or photos in your channel. Thus, hosting a voice chat on your group or channel is beneficial as it helps you connect with your followers on a deeper level.

Host Real-Time Conversations

Voice chats also provide an opportunity for real-time audio interaction among the group or channel members. Participants can get and share information on the fly like they would on public radio.

This can be a great way to create and sustain a sense of community among your group or channel members.

A Flexible Alternative to Group Calls

While voice chats are not group calls, they can achieve the same goals, and with greater flexibility. Group chats can last for days and active users can join and leave as they please.

Voice chats can also provide serendipitous opportunities for talking to people.

Host Your First Voice Chat Today

Whether you just want to have a quick drop-in chat with friends, or host an interactive session with your followers without having to worry about your set or outfit, Telegram voice chats can help you out.

However, you don’t have to use Telegram in order to have live voice chats. Other platforms like Clubhouse, Discord, and Twitter also have a live voice chat feature you can use to host live audio conversations.

From Twitter Spaces to Slack, to Facebook, practically everywhere you turn, you'll see something similar, but it's not limited to traditional social apps. Even messaging apps are getting in on the fun. Telegram has actually had a voice chat feature for a while now, but over the past year, it's been promoting the option as a way for small groups or large public channels to communicate in discussion groups or even as an alternative to traditional podcast recording and distribution. If this sounds interesting or exciting to you, we'll show you how to use Telegram's voice chat feature to start up some dynamic group conversations.

Voice chats in Telegram: creating, setting up, recording

It seems that the Clubhouse service, which has become insanely popular, has overtaken the same karma as Tik-Tok - other services urgently needed their own voice chats. They also appeared in Telegram, although, in fairness, it should be noted that in TG the first version of chats was launched back in December 2020, that is, when the Clubhouse was not at the peak of popularity in Russia.

In the article we will tell you what voice chats are in Telegram, how to create your own chat, and what you can do in it.

Reduce the budget of targeted and contextual advertising with click.ru

Click.ru will return up to 15% of advertising costs.

  • Transfer your advertising accounts to click.ru.
  • The more you spend on advertising, the more percentage of the expenses we will return.
  • This is real money. And click.ru will pay them to the card, to e-wallets, or you can reinvest them in advertising.

We understand the process of creating a chat and its settings.

It is immediately evident that there are no exclusive invites and applications for registration with a long wait in the TG - chats can be created by the owners and administrators of groups (and after the last update of Voice Chats 2.0. and owners of channels), and subscribers of these can participate in them groups/channels. That is, all that an ordinary listener needs is to be registered in the TG and subscribed to the group.

And this, by the way, is a strong competitive advantage of Telegram over Clubhouse — if all voice lovers switch to the messenger, then the very idea of “chosenness” of Clubhouse members will melt before our eyes.

Step 1. Create a chat.

To create voice chats, you must have your own group or channel. If they are not there yet, we advise you to read our instructions on creating a group in Telegram and on creating a channel. From these articles, you will also understand how channels differ from groups.

P.S. Creating voice chats in Telegram is possible both from the phone and in the desktop version, although not all functions work correctly on the desktop yet, we hope that these errors will be fixed in future updates.

To start a voice chat, you need to go to the group / channel menu (3 dots, where the description is) and click "Voice Chat" (on iOS).

On Android, the steps are the same, but the button is called "Start Voice Chat".

Chat can be launched under the name of a personal account or on behalf of a group/channel. Select an account and click "Continue as".

The voice chat window starts. It contains a list of participants, an invitation window and buttons for voice communication.

This is what it looks like on iOS:

To turn on the microphone, you need to click once on the blue microphone button, and it will turn green (under the button there will be an inscription "You are on air"). To turn off the microphone, you need to click on the button again, and it will turn blue again.

P.S. The second way is to hold down the button and speak while it is pressed. If you release it, the recording will stop. From the desktop, you can also hold down the space bar.

In TG, you can turn off the voice chat and continue using the messenger. In this case, the broadcast is not interrupted. To collapse the chat, you need to click on the rectangle button with a dot.

To open the chat window back, you need to click on the blue circle with a microphone on the right in the group. By the way, the circle hangs not only in Telegram, but also on the device, that is, you can fully use the device, and the broadcast will go in the background.

A small window will open with minimal settings - speaker, microphone and exit button. To go to the full window, click on the small one.

Step 2. Voice chat settings.

To open the settings, click on the 3 dots in the voice chat window.

Here you can change the display of the chat author - for example, you started the chat on behalf of the group, but then you can speak on your own behalf, for this we change the account in the chat settings.

Next, you can change the name of the chat. Click on the button "Change the name of the chat", write the name, then "Save". The default is simply "Voice Chat".

Permissions can be changed. There are only 2 of them - "All participants speak" and "New participants do not speak." By default, the first option is set, and this is a minus, since spammers and trolls can get into the chat, or simply the participants themselves will start talking and there will be chaos. We advise you to immediately after creating a chat, configure it so that newcomers cannot use the microphone without the permission of the owner/admin of the chat.

Also in the settings you can get a link to invite participants (more on invitations below).

You can record a voice chat and put it in a group for those who could not attend the live broadcast. Click "Record audio" in the settings.

Come up with a name for the audio file. Other participants will see that the chat is being recorded.

Recording buzzer will sound and a red circle will appear next to the name.

If we do not want to record the entire broadcast (but only a part), in the same settings, click on the "Stop Recording" button. You can also see the countdown - how long the recording has been going on.

The audio file is saved to the Favorites folder, and then it can be dropped from there to the group.

You also need to close the chat correctly - this can also be done in the settings by clicking on the appropriate button or by clicking on the red "Exit" button in the chat window. Be sure to check the box next to the “End voice chat” item, otherwise you will exit, and all the other participants will remain, but the broadcast will not end - you will have to re-enter the chat and already exit correctly. Also add to the collection of minuses.

Important: after the broadcast ends, all chat settings are reset - the name and permissions. When creating a new chat, everything will need to be configured again.

Step 3. Invite participants.

There are 3 ways to invite participants:

1. If the participants are in a group, they will receive an automatic notification immediately after the recording starts. They can go to the group and click "Join".

2. Invite from the voice chat window. Click on the invitation line (Invite participants) and select from the list.

You can choose from both group/channel subscribers and personal contacts. But this method, like the first one, helps to attract only those who have already registered in Telegram.

P.S. When an invitation is sent, its status will be "Invited" in the list of participants. But this does not mean that he listens to the broadcast. He can ignore the invitation. If the participant has entered the voice chat, then the status “Listening” will be under his name.

3. Invite by link. We go to the chat settings, click on the "Invite by link" button, at the bottom of the contact list, click on the "Copy link" button and send it wherever possible.

There is also a button with a link in the invitation window directly from the voice chat (as described in the second version of the invitation).

Important: when you invite a participant to a chat who is not subscribed to a group/channel, he automatically becomes a subscriber to the group/channel. And this is also a minus, since some channel owners can abuse this feature and sign people without their consent. Moreover, after the end of the broadcast, the participant still remains in the subscribers of the group / channel. If he does not want to be there, then he will need to leave the group on his own, but he can be invited an infinite number of times until he changes the privacy settings in his Telegram profile and indicates who specifically can invite him to groups / channels.

A participant can be excluded from the chat, to do this, click on his profile in the list, then on the "Exclude" button. It is important that in this case he will be automatically unsubscribed from the group, and this is also a minus. Therefore, it is better not to exclude people for no reason, but simply turn off their microphone + set a ban on the use of a microphone by beginners at the very beginning.

Step 4. We give the floor to the participants.

If you have not set up a barring for newbies, then to start a conversation, the participant needs to turn on the microphone and start talking. When the microphone is on, the gray icon in the list of participants is not crossed out; when it is off, it is crossed out (this is if the participant turns the microphone on / off himself, and not you).

Important: even if the microphone is on, but the participant is silent, the list under his name will say “Listening” in blue. As soon as he starts talking, the caption will change to green and "Speaking" will appear.

The participant can mute the microphone or adjust its volume. Click on the profile. The green plate is 100% by default. If you move it to the right or left, then you can make the speaker sound quieter or louder (in percent, how much is indicated). This is a cool feature, since not all participants can have perfect equipment and the absence of unnecessary noise.

To turn off the microphone, in the same place in the participant's profile menu, click on the "Mute microphone" button.

The participant will not be able to speak in the chat without permission. Its microphone icon will be highlighted in red in the list.

And for the person himself, the microphone button will change to pink-purple and it will say “You are a listener. Click to request a word."

The participant can click on this button and in the list opposite his name a little man will start jumping (this means that the participant has raised his hand).

To give him the floor, click on the participant, then click "Allow to speak."

Why voice chats in Telegram are better than Clubhouse

To summarize:

Anyone can register in Telegram. There are no waiting lists, no need to search all over the world for a precious invite, no need to consider yourself inferior because you have an Android (Clubhouse is only on iOS, although the developers claim that it will be on Android too. TG works with both operating systems).

You can record the broadcast. It is forbidden to record live broadcasts in Clubhouse and you can get banned for the fact of recording from your phone. This is done so that users hang more in the application, afraid to miss important broadcasts, but the motivation is so-so. There is no such thing in Telegram - if the author decides to make a record, any participant will be able to listen to it later.

There are, of course, also disadvantages: in the TG there is no list of rooms, as in the Clubhouse, where you can freely move around - if you are not in a group, you will not know about the recording until you are invited or posted an announcement (for example, on Instagram with an invitation to join the group and participate in the broadcast). But, most likely, in the future this issue will be resolved - for example, they will create a bot with a list of broadcasts or a website.

Conclusion

Telegram seems to become, if not the "killer" of Clubhouse, then a serious competitor to the newly minted service. Of course, while there are small cons and errors (for example, glitches from the desktop), access to the microphone for all participants by default (each time you need to change this setting manually and, most importantly, remember this until a lot of people run into the air), no chat directory, the voice chat does not automatically close when the group owner leaves. But the pluses still outweigh and, judging by the fact that the first update of voice chats in Telegram has already been released, they took the tool seriously. Let's see what this will lead to and how the audience will be divided between Clubhouse and Telegram.
