How does instagram pay influencers

Does Instagram Pay Influencers in 2023?

If you want to share a combination of photos and videos, Instagram is the ultimate social media platform. Owned by Facebook, it’s tied into Facebook’s massive user base. It also attracts a younger demographic separately from Facebook. But why stop with sharing your pictures and videos? Why not take things to the next level and become an influencer?

Companies will often partner with popular Instagram users to promote their products. You don’t even need that many followers. Even a couple of thousand is enough if they fall into a niche advertisers want to reach. If that’s the case, you’ll be able to start earning money from your Instagram account. You can also monetize your videos with ads, promote your own business, or participate in affiliate marketing.

Note: At no extra cost to you, we may earn a commission for purchases using our links. Learn more.

Let’s be clear: Instagram does not pay influencers, at least not directly. Brands and advertisers pay them, though some of that revenue will pass through Instagram in the case of video advertising. Let’s talk more about Instagram influencers and how they earn their money.

What Is an Influencer?

People often confuse influencers with celebrities. This isn’t really the case, though many celebrities are also influencers. But that’s really no different than what celebrities have always done. Long before social media, brands were paying celebrities to promote their products to the public.

In fact, celebrity endorsements go back at least as far as the Middle Ages. If a duke or even a king stayed at an inn, he could choose to allow the inn to fly his heraldry. If you saw a nobleman’s banner hanging on an inn, you knew it gave top-tier service!

Thankfully, you don’t have to be a celebrity or European nobility to become an influencer. In fact, anybody can be an influencer. All you need is a following of people who trust your expertise. In other words, you need to build a personal brand.

Let’s say you’re good at motorcycle repair, and you have your own shop. You might take pictures and post videos to help people with their maintenance. Over time, people would come to know you as a motorcycle expert. They might even share your content, which is good news. It means you’re reaching beyond your followers to your followers’ followers.

As you might imagine, there’s no shortcut to becoming an influencer. You need to post good content that people find valuable. You also need to do this consistently. You won’t build a following by posting every six months. Put out a steady stream of content that keeps your followers engaged.

With as few as 1,000 followers, you can earn your first endorsement. You’ll typically need more than that, but it all depends on your niche and how many people share your content. So, how do you monetize your following? Here are six different ways.

How to Earn Money on Instagram

There are a few main ways that influencers earn money on Instagram. Let’s go over a few of the most popular methods.

1. Obtain a Sponsorship

First things first; let’s talk about sponsorships. This is what most people think of when they think of Instagram influencers, and it’s a reliable way to earn. A brand pays you a certain amount of money to shout out their product, typically with a photo or video. The exact type of brand you would partner with would depend on your niche. For example, if your channel is all about snowboarding, you might partner with a helmet manufacturer.

This is important for two reasons. For one thing, you don’t want to alienate your audience. The snowboarding channel’s audience might be put off by a makeup sponsorship. For another thing, advertisers want to reach people who are already interested in their product. That’s why they want to advertise on relevant channels.

If you’re lucky, a sponsor will seek you out. In practice, that won’t happen unless you have a very large channel with lots of visibility. You’d be better served by working with an agency, who can help you find appropriate advertisers. There are many agencies available, each with their own specialties.

Unless you have a lot of reach, it can be hard to attract “big name” advertisers. Instead, look for advertisers with a particular niche. Let’s go back to the snowboarder example. Maybe your channel is too small to attract a helmet manufacturer. But you might be able to promote a helmet camera mount for a GoPro, for example. Think about what your followers want, and get creative!

Finally, remember that Instagram posts are covered by the same laws as other marketing. This includes laws about truth in advertising, so be careful about who you endorse. You should also go into your account settings and set up branded content, then tag your sponsor. This will display the proper disclosure that your post has been paid for.

2. Promote Your Own Business

You don’t need a sponsorship to make money from your Instagram account. If you have a small business, you can use Instagram to promote it. How you do this will depend on your type of channel. Let’s go back to our earlier example of a motorcycle mechanic. The most obvious thing to do would be to promote your own services. You’d only get business from people in your area, but there’s nothing wrong with that. After all, you probably have more followers close to home than anywhere else.

If you’re selling a product rather than a service, things get even easier. For example, Instagram is a great place to promote artwork and photography. Why limit yourself to selling your work through a local studio? You have the entire internet at your fingertips. And if you have an Etsy or Shopify storefront, you can put a link to it on your profile. That way, you’ll make it easy to find your products.

While you’re doing all this, remember that Instagram is primarily a visual platform. When you post pictures of your products, make sure they’re well-lit and attractive. Enable high-quality photo uploads so people get the best possible look. And make sure to use a relevant hashtag to make your posts more discoverable.

Of course, you’ll get better results when you know your audience well. Use Instagram Insights to see who’s interacting with your posts. You can get information about follower demographics, as well, so you know who’s interested in your content. That way, you can tailor future posts to your core audience.

3. Sell Your Old Stuff

Even if you don’t own a business, you might have stuff you want to get rid of. A lot of people hold a garage sale or yard sale to make a few bucks from unwanted items. But why not offer your items to all of Instagram? Sites like Poshmark make it easy to get rid of old clothes and other things.

As when promoting your business, make sure to take well-lit, good-quality photos. At the same time, be honest about the items’ condition. If your old end table has a scratch on it, include that in the pictures. It’s better to be honest upfront than to deal with an angry buyer later on.

4. Monetize Live Videos and Q&As

Instagram isn’t just for pre-recorded content. You can also put out live videos to share with your followers. Viewers can purchase “badges” with values from $0.99 to $4.99 as a way to thank you for your work.

The best way to encourage people to donate is by providing extra value for those who buy badges. For example, you could host a live Q&A session, and give first priority to those who donate most. For this to work, you’ll want to announce the live video in advance. Otherwise, people might not know it’s happening until it’s already over.

5. Let Brands Run Ads on Your Videos

Like YouTube, Instagram allows you to monetize your videos. Go to your account settings, and turn on the monetization option for video ads. From then on, advertising will appear in your videos, as long as the videos are at least 2 minutes long. Shorter videos won’t qualify for advertising.

You’ll be paid 55% of any revenue generated, while Instagram will take the other 45%. Payments are issued at the end of each month.

6. Try Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a special type of advertising where you earn a commission for promoting a product. Typically, an advertiser will give you a unique code or link to provide to your followers. When followers use that code or link for their purchase, you get a small percentage.

The nice thing about affiliate programs is that there’s no barrier to entry. Even the smallest Instagram accounts can sign up and start promoting products. If you only earn a few pennies at first, who cares? At least you’re making something, and your earnings will grow along with your following.

Final Thoughts

While Instagram doesn’t pay its influencers directly, there are plenty of ways to earn money on the platform. You can promote your own business, sell old junk, or sign up for video monetization. Affiliate marketing is a great way for anyone to start earning. And if you’re an established expert, you can make good money with live videos and Q&As.

Regardless, Instagram in 2023 still proves to be a very lucrative endeavor for some. Whether you have a couple thousand or hundreds of thousands of followers, truth is, you can make some really good money if you monetize your account in the right ways.

Can you make money on Instagram?

Hell yeah. In fact, helping creators make a living on the platform is a top priority for Instagram, especially as competition heats up from TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube.

“Our goal is to be the best platform for creators like you to make a living,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the company’s first-ever Creator Week in June 2021.

In 2021, Instagram was the second-most downloaded app in the world. It’s the 7th most-visited website globally, the 4th most-used social media platform, and has 1. 22 billion users every month. All of which is to say: that’s a massive potential audience. With an enormous and diverse pool of people who could potentially be exposed to your content, there are plenty of opportunities to earn money.

How much money can you make on Instagram?

Numbers are tricky, because creators and brands are notoriously private about how much money they’re making. On top of that, calculating income from Instagram is complicated—if you sing a song on a Reel, the sound goes viral and you get a record deal from that internet fame, then tens of thousands of people buy tickets to your concert, does that count as making money on Instagram? What if you post food videos, then provide a link to your recipe blog, and host ads on your blog that make you money?

It sounds bizarre, but that’s the way most successful creators’ journeys go. How much money you can make on Instagram depends on your credentials, audience size, engagement, strategy, hustle, and a dash of dumb luck.

Here’s how much some creators and celebs have reportedly cashed in:

$901: The average amount of money an Instagram influencer with 1,000 to 10,000 followers can make per post, according to Business Insider

$100 to $1,500: How much a creator can be paid for a swipe-up advertisement on their Instagram stories according to Brian Hanly, CEO of Bullish Studio (a talent agency for influencers)

$983,100: The amount Kylie Jenner reportedly makes per ad or sponsored content post

$1,604,000: The amount Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly makes per post

In 2021, Hype Auditor surveyed almost 2 thousand influencers (most based in the U.S.) about how much money they make. Here’s what they found:

  • The average influencer makes $2,970 per month. “Average” numbers aren’t the best to go by, since there’s so much differentiation between the highs and lows—as is referenced in the next stat!
  • Micro-influencers (accounts with one thousand to ten thousand followers earn on average $1,420 per month, and mega-influencers (accounts with over one million followers) earn about $15,356 per month.

How to make money on Instagram as a business

Being present, active, and engaging on Instagram (and keeping up with trends) is one of the best ways to find business success on the platform in 2022. Here’s how to do it.

1. Promote special offers

The online audience is a sucker for a good deal (and Instagram users love to buy stuff: 44% of Instagrammers say they use the app to shop weekly).

Use Instagram to showcase all the great things about your company—specifically, anytime you’re having a sale. Not only does posting your sale, promo code, or special offer on Instagram advertise a sale to your followers, but it also makes the information easily shareable.

This holiday sale post from clothing brand @smashtess has lots of comments that are just people tagging their friends. It’s an awesome way to promote the sale and also have the sale shared organically.

2. Set up countdowns to new launches

You can use Instagram to give your followers a sneak peek of new releases, launches, or product lines—and using the “Countdown” or “Reminder” functions, you can provide potential customers with a simple way to flag when those new products will be available for sale. This creates some hype around your offer, and once the release happens, users get a notification reminding them to check out the goods (and, hopefully, check out the goods).

3. Set up an Instagram Shop

Instagram Shops are a direct method of making money off of the app. Users can buy products using the platform’s native e-commerce tools, and it’s easy to set up a shop.

Instagram shops are an impulse buyer’s best friend (or worst nightmare, depending on how you look at it). Your shoppable products or services will show up in your followers’ news feeds, along with regular posts.

Hosting an Instagram shop is also a great way to provide quick customer service to folks who use social media (basically everyone—75% of the global population over the age of 13). Customers can DM you or comment on posts to learn more about your brand. (Hint: if you’re feeling overwhelmed in your DMs, consider using a chatbot to support your customer service team.)

When you post something with a buyable item, the little shop icon will appear on the post, letting viewers know that it’s available for purchase.

Home goods store @the.modern.shop uses shoppable tags in many of their posts.

4. Schedule shoppable Instagram posts with Hootsuite

You can create and schedule or auto-publish shoppable Instagram photos, videos, and carousel posts alongside all your other social media content using Hootsuite.

To tag a product in an Instagram post in Hootsuite, follow these steps:

1. Open your Hootsuite dashboard and go to Composer.

2. Under Publish to, select an Instagram Business profile.

3. Upload your media (up to 10 images or videos) and type out your caption.

4. In the preview on the right, select Tag products. The tagging process is slightly different for videos and images:

  • Images: Select a spot in the image, and then search for and select an item in your product catalog. Repeat for up to 5 tags in the same image. Select Done when you’re finished tagging.
  • Videos: A catalog search appears right away. Search for and select all the products you want to tag in the video.

5. Select Post now or Schedule for later. If you decide to schedule your post, you will see suggestions for the best times to publish your content for maximum engagement.

And that’s it! Your shoppable post will show up in the Hootsuite Planner, alongside all of your other scheduled content.

You can also boost your existing shoppable posts directly from Hootsuite to help more people discover your products.

Note: You’ll need an Instagram Business account and an Instagram shop to take advantage of product tagging in Hootsuite.

5.

Set up a chatbot

An easy way to provide excellent customer service and make sales through direct messages is to set up an Instagram chatbot. A chatbot is integrated directly into your Instagram account and website and can answer any frequently asked questions from your followers. If the question is too complicated for the conversational AI chatbot, then it will automatically pass the inquiry to a real live member of your team.

And how can a chatbot help you earn on Instagram? Simple!

An Instagram chatbot can recommend products in your shop, directly to your customers within the chat, leading to faster and more streamlined sales.

If a customer inquires about what color foundation you have in stock, the chatbot can serve up three different options that the user can quickly add to their cart without ever leaving the platform.

6. Partner with creators

Influencer marketing allows you to share your company with the creator’s audience (and the creator also gets a spotlight for your audience—it’s a win-win).

When you’re researching folks to collaborate with, make sure you pay attention to their content and values: you want to pick someone who has goals that align with your own, so the partnership makes sense to customers and doesn’t seem like some oddball marketing scheme.

For example, it makes sense for a plant-based bakery to partner with a vegan influencer (more sense than Bill Nye partnering with Coca-Cola, that’s for sure).

Try to collaborate with creators who would be likely to try and/or like your products, anyway—for example, dancer @maddieziegler has long had a partnership with activewear brand @fabletics. You can offer the creator money, goods, or an affiliate deal (more info on that in the “Join an affiliate program” section of this post, just above!) in exchange for posting about your company.

7.

Partner with other businesses

Like partnering with creators, partnerships with other businesses give folks on both sides of the deal an opportunity to interact with a wider consumer base. Try contacting other businesses like yours and hosting a contest or giveaway—it’s an excellent way to gain followers and tap into a new audience.

This giveaway from @chosenfoods and @barebonesbroth requires entrants to like and save the post, follow both companies, and tag a friend in the comments. Both brands are building their audience—followers just waiting to be converted into consumers.

8. Straight-up advertise

Hey, the basics still work. Advertising on Instagram is one of the ways you can make money on the platform and actually track your progress. You can turn any post into an ad by boosting it, and your Instagram analytics will tell you how much of a difference the boost made.

How to make money on Instagram as a creator

Even if you don’t have a “business” in the conventional sense, there are lots of ways you can use Instagram to make money as an individual. With a solid following and clear niche, you have influence—and can be an influencer.

1. Partner with brands

Partnering with brands is likely the most well-known way that creators can make money on Instagram. Find a small or big brand that aligns with your values (that part is important—partnering with a brand that has nothing to do with your regular content, or even directly contradicts your regular content, will make you seem inauthentic).

Partnerships with brands can take many forms: you might be paid to make an Instagram post that features a specific product or be offered free products in exchange for content. To get started, try making a few posts that feature some of your favorite things—restaurants, skincare, whatever feels true to you—for free. You can then point to those posts as examples when you’re reaching out to brands.

Lots of makeup and beauty influencers participate in these kinds of brand deals. Here’s an example of a paid partnership post from creator @mexicanbutjapanese for Nordstrom.

Hint: when you’re participating in a paid partnership or sponsored post, be transparent. Use hashtags, mark the post as sponsored, and be clear about the partnership in your captions. Not following Instagram’s branded content guidelines can result in posts being removed—plus, it’s sketchy.

2. Join an affiliate program

This is related to brand partnerships, as joining an affiliate program still requires you to connect yourself to a business that sells specific products or experiences. Affiliate programs essentially pay you to market other people’s products (so again, you want to make sure that the products you’re highlighting align with your values). If your followers buy something from the brand through you—usually using a specific link or discount code—you get paid.

This nail artist is an affiliate marketer for a nail polish brand—when followers use her discount code to buy the nail polish, the creator makes money.

3. Enable Live Badges

For creators in the U.S., Instagram’s Live Badges is a method of making money directly through the app. During a live video, viewers can purchase the badges (which cost between $0.99 and $4.99) to show their support.

To turn on Live Badges, go to your Profile and tap Professional Dashboard. Then, enable Instagram monetization. Once you’ve been approved, you’ll see a button called Set Up Badges. Tap that, and you’re good to go!

Source: Instagram

If you’ve enabled Live Badges, make sure to mention it when you go live (remind your followers that if they’d like to show their support with money, it’s easy to do so!) and express gratitude when someone purchases a badge. Saying thank you goes a long way, and will likely encourage other people to pitch in.

4. Sell your merch

Using Instagram as a marketing tool for your other revenue streams is a great strategy for moneymaking. If you’ve curated your personal brand enough to have a certain look, logo, catchphrase, or anything else that’s recognizably you, consider selling merch that’s splashed with that extra sparkle (you’re brand). You can make money from sales—plus score some free advertising when your followers start walking around with your name on their sweatpants.

Drag queen extraordinaire Trixie Mattel sells branded merch and uses Instagram as a platform to advertise.

5. Link to your blog or vlog

Selling advertising space on your own website—or making money from Youtube—can be super lucrative, and you can use Instagram to direct your followers to that external site (hint: use a link tree to make the most of that link in your Instagram bio).

Here are some quick examples:

  • Foodies who post pictures of food they’ve made and also have a blog where they post full recipes
  • YouTubers who post highlights of their vlog on Reels, then provide a link to their Youtube channel for the full video
  • Fashion influencers who post their outfits on Instagram and link to their website, where they share where the clothes came from
  • Outdoor adventurers who post gorgeous landscapes and link to their blog where they detail the best road trip routes

Food blogger @tiffy.cooks posts videos of her making food on her blog, and links to in-depth recipes in her bio. The recipes live on her blog, which also hosts posts that contain affiliate links.

6. Offer paid tutorials or masterclasses

This is similar to linking to a blog or vlog, but instead of making income indirectly (through businesses advertising on your page or Youtube ads), your followers are directly paying you for a service you’re providing.

If you have a particular area of expertise, you could offer an online masterclass that requires a paid ticket. This method of moneymaking is common for fitness influencers, who may post short workouts for free and then link to a full training routine that you need to pay to access.

Film colorist @theqazman offers quick tips on Instagram, but also hosts ticketed masterclasses. This way, his content still appeals to a wide (non-paying) audience, but folks who are serious about learning the ropes will pay him for a full lesson.

You can also offer tutorials or masterclasses for free and simply ask followers to tip you if they have the means—that’s the method athlete @iamlshauntay uses. Her link in bio directs followers to ways they can pay her for her work if they’re able to. This is a good technique to use if you’re looking for maximum accessibility: there’s no financial barrier to your content, but there’s still a clear way for your audience to pay you if they want to.

Here's how it's done if you've ever dreamed of lying on a sunny yacht, sailing calmly in the Mediterranean, and paying for it all with one social media post.

Here are two general rules for calculating bids:

Engagement rate per post + post type bonuses (x number of posts) + additional factors = overall rating of

Influencers earn a percentage of purchases using systems such as LTK and ShopStyle to generate affiliate links or discount codes offered by businesses.

In July 2021, Facebook, now known as Meta, said it would invest over $1 billion in creators by 2022.
Since then, Instagram has introduced several revenue generating solutions for producers. Although the platform's revenue-sharing agreement for advertising aired on IGTV (which has been renamed "Instagram Video") expired in 2022, producers are turning to Reels to make money.
There are many incentive schemes on Instagram that fall under the Bonuses category. For example, Instagram's "Reels Play Bonus" rewards creators based on the number of views their videos receive per month.

Meme author Jackson Weimer told Insider that he was making over $6,000 a month from his drums. Meta has created a bonus scheme and other ways to make money with Reels on Facebook, such as ad revenue. However, these payments are constantly changing for creators as Meta continues to test the program.
These payouts were seen by one designer as the icing on the cake.
Instagram creators can also earn money by earning "Badges" or "Gifts" (tipping features for Live and Reels respectively), setting up Instagram followings, and selling their own items or products within the app.

No. 5. Selling Classes, DTC Items, and Merchandise

How to increase your Instagram followers

As said earlier, you will need followers before you can make money on Instagram. The hardest part is getting 100 followers, then 500, then 1,000. Some people believe that they can buy fake followers and save themselves the hard work, but companies and advertisers are wise - the quality of followers is just as important.

In addition to having a sufficient number of subscribers, your audience must be active and engaged. Engagement indicates that your posts get a lot of likes, comments, saves, and shares. Here are some tips to increase your Instagram followers with Quality Audiences:

    #1. Increase your reach

You probably know that using hashtags, creating an optimized bio, and promoting your Instagram page on other social media platforms are all effective strategies to start building your audience. However, the competition for followers these days is fierce. It is very important to find unique strategies to get subscribers. Here are some suggestions:

    • Make sure your photos are amazing and fit your style.
    • Publish regularly. This is made easier by creating many posts at the same time and scheduling them on a recurring schedule.
    • Organize product giveaways for subscribers who refer others to you.
    • Engage with followers by commenting on posts from larger accounts in your area.
    • Befriend other influencers and ask for—or pay—shouts.

    No.

    2. Engage with your followers

Engagement is just as important as the number of followers. Creating posts that encourage followers to share or comment should be just as important as building your followers. According to Rival IQ, the average brand engagement rate is less than 2% and continues to fall. Available for business and creator accounts, Instagram Insights can help you measure the performance of your posts.

Posting questions or getting advice or opinions are two ways to engage your audience. Don't forget to thank your followers who took the time to chat with you.

    #3. Perform occasional follower support

It's a mystery, but many Instagrammers claim to be followed by vague profiles that appear to be bots. These accounts increase your followers but decrease engagement because they don't comment or like your content.
As your followers grow, you can regularly clear your account and remove inactive followers. This will increase your level of engagement as well as your chances of getting rich sponsorships.

What is the minimum number of Instagram followers required to pay?

Payment on Instagram is usually independent of the number of followers. Brands want product recognition and potential sales, and collaboration can help them achieve both. They look at how well you interact with your audience, no matter how many followers you have. As a result, work on increasing engagement rates and release high-quality content relevant to your field frequently.

    Are Instagram users paid?

Instagram users can be rewarded. There are many ways to make money on Instagram. You can promote your Instagram account and grow it. You can be an Instagram influencer and also build your followers. Thanks to this, you can agree to cooperation, promote products and services, and participate in affiliate marketing. If you are a photographer, you can also sell your photos and other visual content.

Influencer marketing is a great strategy for any marketing manager or business owner. However, there are many moving parts to consider.
You must find the right influencer for your brand and budget. You also need to understand how they set their prices.
You then need to determine how they will be integrated into your marketing approach. And, of course, track your results after your campaign.

How do you know if the influencers you follow are ethical?

Influencers have grown in popularity in recent years, in part because people have discovered how lucrative it can be. Unfortunately, some influencers may act unethically. Here are some tips to help you follow ethical influencers on social media.

What do you need to know about the income of influential people?

Leaving your day job to live on an Instagram influencer's salary is easier said than done because accounts must acquire thousands of followers before they can start making money.
Instagram influencers with less than 10,000 followers can earn an average of $100,000 per post. Those with less than 200.00 followers pay an average of $200.00 per post, although this amount varies greatly by account. Instead, most accounts at this level are given free products or discounts in exchange for posting.

Profiles with 250,000 to 500,000 followers can make big money by posting brand-related content on their profiles, whether it's a static image, a GIF video, or an Instagram story. It's safe to assume that if an influencer reaches a million followers, they're making good money and working hard to keep it.

    Conclusion

Instagram influencers can earn a staggering amount of money just by posting on social media.
Building a successful brand is, of course, easier said than done. It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of luck to really become an influencer.

Also, not everyone aspires to be an influencer on a permanent basis. Many influencers use their celebrity as a springboard to launch small businesses.
Making Instagram your full-time job isn't for everyone.
