How to Find and Search Filters on Instagram

Device Links

  • Android
  • iPhone
  • Device Missing?

You’ll often hear people say, “Instagram is not real life.” It is an argument that reminds us not to allow this massive social media platform to affect our self-esteem by comparing ourselves to others.

But choosing to augment and alter your appearance with Instagram filters can also be a fun way to take a break from the mundanity of everyday life.

Have you seen those Instagram filters that give you angel wings, a cool mustache, or freckles? That’s just the tip of the iceberg. If you want to explore Instagram filters but aren’t sure where to start, we offer this handy step-by-step guide.

How to Search for Filters on Instagram on an iPhone

If you’re an iPhone user and want to find a perfect Instagram filter for your next Story, the solution is only a few taps away.

Instagram offers several integrated filters as soon as you open the camera within the app, but you don’t have to use any of those if you don’t want to. There are a couple of ways you can find Instagram filters using your iPhone.

Method 1 – Borrow From a Friend

One of the best shortcuts for finding an Instagram filter is to use one you’ve seen on Stories from people you follow. Perhaps your friend has used a voice-altering filter and you want to try it. Here’s how to grab it.

  1. Go to the Instagram user’s Story.
  2. Tap the filter’s name in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. When a pop-up box appears, select “View effect.”
  4. Select either “Try it” or “Save effect.”

Keep in mind that a single Instagram Story lasts 24 hours, so if it has expired, you might not be able to find the exact filter. You can try browsing the Instagram filter database instead.

Method 2 – Search by Category

This is probably the most fun way to search Instagram filters. But be warned that if you don’t know precisely what you’re looking for, you might spend hours trying out filters—and having a fantastic time.

Here’s how it works.

  1. Launch the Instagram app on your iPhone.
  2. Swipe right to open the camera.
  3. Browse through integrated filters at the bottom of the screen. To find more, swipe left until you see a magnifying glass icon.
  4. Tap the magnifying glass icon to open “Effect gallery.”
  5. Use the search bar icon to enter specific terms, such as “glasses” or “elf ears.”
  6. You can also move the tabs at the top of the screen, which offers several categories.

One of the categories is “Following,” which are Instagram filters created by the people you follow. For example, if you follow the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Instagram, you’ll notice they have many custom filters available.

How to Search for Filters on Instagram on an Android Device

Android users can also enjoy various Instagram filters, augmenting pictures and videos for their followers.

The Instagram app for Android is virtually the same as the one iOS users have, so finding filters is a breeze. There are two ways to go about this quest.

Method 1 – Borrow From a Friend

Has one of your friends used a funny Instagram filter and you want to try it out too? As long as the Story containing the filter is still active, you’re in luck. You can try or download a specific filter from another person on Instagram in no time.

Follow these steps to learn how.

  1. Open the Story with the filter you want to copy.
  2. In the top-left corner of the screen, tap the filter’s name.
  3. A pop-up box will appear. Make sure to tap “View effect.”
  4. Choose between “Try it” or “Save effect.”

By choosing the Try it option, you can test the filter on the spot and see if it’s the right fit. If you select Save effect, the Instagram filter will be downloaded and saved. You can access it every time you open the camera on Instagram.

Method 2 – Search by Category

Thousands of filters are available on Instagram, and more are added daily. You can find the filter you enjoy either by going through different categories or searching by keywords. The process is pretty straightforward.

Here’s everything you need to do.

  1. Open the Instagram app on your Android device.
  2. Swipe right to open the camera.
  3. There are several built-in filters on the left and right sides of the shutter button.
  4. Swipe left to find the magnifying glass icon.
  5. Tap the magnifying glass icon to open the “Effect gallery.”
  6. Tap the search icon in the top-right corner to search for specific terms and keywords.
  7. Move through existing tabs to choose a category of Instagram filters you want to explore.

To check out Instagram filters designed by people you follow, select the “Following” category when browsing the “Effects gallery.”

The Incredible World of Instagram Filters

Indeed, some Instagram filters are designed to hide certain skin imperfections or change the color of your eyes. But most of the available filters are clearly created for laughs, or to create a particular aesthetic.

Nearly all social media platforms offer filters to users because they’re easy to use and people enjoy them. Instagram has elevated its filter game to another level, and searching through and trying out the available options is a great way to show off creativity and connect with friends.

Ethnicity estimate Instagram mask - what is your nationality?

Where can I find the mask Instagram Ethnicity estimate? This is not an Instagram mask, but a separate application Gradient: DNA test (available for both iPhone and Android).

In the application, you upload your (or any other person's) photo with a face, and it will give you a percentage of what nationality you are. Try to upload different photos of the same person - and the nationality percentages will be different! Such an assessment is not particularly scientific, purely for fun.

Masks on Instagram where you can change gender - male / female face and child mask

There are no such masks yet. What you saw is from Snapchat. There you can make a video, changing gender and turn into a child. Then upload this video to Instagram. In Snapchat, these masks are standard. Just download the application and find in the list of filters either a male face with a beard (in a purple frame) or a mask with a female face next to it. And the next mask is a child.

Keanu Reeves with a child mask.

Such a sweet woman turned out from Brad Pitt and a heartthrob from Angelina Jolie. Sex change was successful.

Instagram aging mask - make yourself an old face!

How to make an old man mask on Instagram? This is also a separate application. Snapchat or FaceApp is available on both iPhone and Android.

Snapchat - child mask and old face mask

Snapchat's newest mask can make you a child and old man face. And you can even record a video where the changes will occur before your eyes gradually. You need to turn on the mask and drag the slider at the bottom to the right and left.

FaceApp - aging mask

The most interesting thing is that you can not only make an aging mask out of a young face, but vice versa. There are also functions for changing the face - make-up, hair color, glasses and beards, etc.

How to create your own masks on Instagram?

To make your own masks on Instagram, you need to download and install the program for creating masks "SparkAR". It is only in English, but for creating simple masks it is clear enough. English instruction: https://sparkar.facebook.com/ar-studio/learn/documentation/tutorials/quick-start-guide/

Previously, during beta testing, you could wait six months for a mask to be approved, but now everything is much faster. Anyone can quickly figure out the program and make a simple mask.

Facebook and Instagram masks are downloaded separately.

When uploading the mask, you will need to specify where to publish it - on Facebook or Instagram.

Finding, turning on and adding filters to Instagram

There are about 40 different color correction options on Instagram. Those that have been added to Stories deserve special attention. There is one way to turn on all filters on Instagram and remove unnecessary ones from the list.

Searching for and enabling filters

When creating a publication for the first time, the user is offered a basic set consisting of the first ten effects. Installing third-party filters on Instagram will not work, but you can go to the whole catalog with editing.

Where to find the standard ones:

  1. Log in to Instagram.
  2. Go to section: " Create Publication ".
  3. Add a photo from the Gallery or take a photo.
  4. Press: « Next "- a menu will appear with the addition.
  5. Click again on the selected item to set transparency.

How to find additional filters on Instagram:

  1. When adding a photo, go to "Filters".
  2. Scroll to the end of the list - Control .
  3. Check the ones you need when editing.
  4. Click on top: " Save ".

The list can be returned to its original form if you go back to the "Management" category and indicate the first ten positions.

Using filters for Stories

Unlike the posts section, you can't set transparency percentage in Stories. Also, it is impossible to edit only individual elements of the image: color correction is applied to all images, including text. The collection of effects is limited, so users are more likely to use editing elements from third-party applications.

Instructions on how to add filters to Instagram Stories:

  1. Go to the section: Stories.
  2. Add a photo or take a picture.
  3. Swipe left to open the edit menu.
  4. Scroll through the list - select one of the options.
  5. Place.

To select one, the user only needs to stop scrolling. The editing settings are reset by the "Cancel" button or by switching to the first, original one.

While creating a Story and adding an effect, other functions are available: working with stickers, captions, downloading videos. The filter will be applied to photos and videos added to the Stories section.

Where to find new ones

The catalog is regularly updated in the "Management" section. To test new ones, you need to visit the section again and see the available options. The user can create personal add-ons by specifying certain settings for editing.

But applying the same settings to other images will not work - the preset will not be saved as a separate adjustment layer.

If all Instagram filters disappeared:

  • update or reinstall the application;
  • go to the "Management" settings and see the list of added effects;
  • start editing again.

Such a problem is rare: even in the first version of the social network, there were already effects for pictures. When adding a new photo, you need to check its size and resolution.
