By default, new users subscribe to the most popular subreddits, but you'll have a lot more fun if you take the time to subscribe to the subreddits you like. After that, the main page will change according to your interests.

Who are moderators?

Moderators are redditors just like you, but they perform some tasks within certain communities:

They configure community settings, such as writing a description of it or deciding whether it should have the status "Over 18".
They set their own logo and style, if any.
They can mark their links or comments as a community moderator post by appending "[M]" to them and changing the title color to green.
They can remove links or comments from the community if they find them controversial or off topic.
They can ban users within the community. (This has no effect on other pages of the site).
They can make other users moderators.

Moderators are not appointed by Reddit and have no special privileges outside of the community they moderate.

Why does reddit need moderation? Isn't it possible to just decide everything by voting?

The reason why there are many subreddits is the possibility of different communities forming instead of one single community. These communities differ in their unique goals, appearance, and politics: what is on topic and what is not, whether people should be calm or allowed to let their feelings run wild, and so on.

One of the problems is that new or short-term visitors to certain communities often do not know the rules of these communities.

Let's take /r/swimming (swimming) and /r/scuba (diving) as an example. People can read about one topic or another (or subscribe to both). But since divers love to swim, casual users might start posting swimming links on /r/scuba. And they will likely get a lot of upvotes, especially from people who look at the links on the main reddit page and don't pay attention to where they were posted. If left as is, /r/scuba will simply become another /r/swimming, and there will simply be no room for diving-related news.

To avoid this, /r/scuba moderators remove off-topic links and ideally let those users know about /r/swimming.

What if the moderators are bad?

In some cases, when a moderator abandoned a community, another redditor created the same community, and subscribers chose a new subreddit over the old one.

If you have a complaint with a moderator, first try contacting that moderator to see if there is a misunderstanding. You can contact all moderators at once by sending a message to /r/[subreddit name]. But please note that moderators have the right to manage their subreddits as they see fit, as long as it is within the rules of reddit. So if it's an ideological issue or a personal grudge against a moderator, consider creating your own subreddit and arranging it however you want, rather than organizing a boycott or bullying.

If you create a subreddit, you automatically become its moderator. If you want to become a moderator of an existing subreddit, ask its moderators about it! Posting may take several minutes to appear in New. But it may happen that a moderator or an automatic spam filter considers your post to be spam. If you think this is a bug, try sending a message to the moderator of the relevant subreddit. If you don't get a response within a day, post your question to /r/help.

What is the "complain" button?

The "report" button shown on all links and comments is a way to indicate to moderators that something is spam or violates the rules, such as pornography posted on a non-adult subreddit or a PDF file in /r/videos.
