How to make a WhatsApp audio/video call on the Mac

WhatsApp launched last week the ability to make calls on its Mac app version. For those who rely on WhatsApp to communicate with family members, coworkers, and friends, it’s now easier than ever to do so. Here’s how to make a call on the service with a Mac.

Before anything else, make sure of these three things:

  • You must have the most recent WhatsApp app version on your Mac
  • Your Mac must be running macOS 10. 13 High Sierra or newer
  • You’ll need to have an audio output device, microphone, and camera connected to your Mac for calls. Video calling isn’t supported on devices without a camera

WhatsApp suggests a headset for the best audio quality. You can use the AirPods or any other headset you have at home.

Making a video or audio call

  • Open the individual chat with the contact you’d like to call
  • Click the Video Call icon on the right top corner of the screen

During the call, you can mute or unmute your microphone by clicking the microphone icon or turn your camera off or on by clicking the camera icon. To end a call, click “End” call.

Switching between voice and video calls

While on a voice call with a contact, you can request to switch to a video call. The contact you’re voice calling can choose to click “OK” or “Switch” to switch the call or “Cancel” to decline.

  • Hover over the Camera icon during the call
  • Click the Camera icon
  • The voice call will switch to a video call if your contact accepts the switch

Remember that for now, you can only make audio or video calls with a single contact. WhatsApp is working to deliver the best experience with this new function on the Mac app, but it has promised to release an updated version with the possibility to make group calls.

Remember that all calls and messages sent on WhatsApp have end-to-end encryption.

How to use WhatsApp audio/video calls on Mac

Oleg Voronin —

WhatsApp in the face of fierce competition is constantly working on the capabilities of its service. The desktop (for PC and Mac) WhatsApp application also does not stand still and is gradually turning from a showcase product into a good communication software. In particular, now it can make and receive audio and video calls. The company assures that all calls use end-to-end encryption, so that third parties cannot listen to your communication.

If you're an active WhatsApp user and you're not ready to leave, but you haven't installed the Mac app yet, welcome. Now we'll tell you everything.

Install WhatsApp for Mac
Since Apple allows you to install software from third-party sources, Mac software developers very rarely list their products in the AppStore. However, WhatsApp can be found both in the Apple app store and on the messenger's official website - go to the download page and download the installation dmg image. WhatsApp supports macOS High Sierra or later.

When the file is ready, double-tap it and drag the WhatsApp icon to the folder next to it. Wait for the copy process to finish. Ready! Messenger can be found in the Mac application list - in Launchpad or in the Applications folder in the Finder.

WhatsApp activation and making calls
Launch WhatsApp from the application list. You will see a welcome window that contains prompts for activation. Follow this guide to link your smartphone to your Mac.

After activation, you will immediately see all your chats and contacts in the WhatsApp window. For the application to work, there are several conditions:

  • WhatsApp must be installed on the smartphone with a current account;
  • The smartphone must be permanently connected to the Internet.

It's not very convenient, but it's a fact. Perhaps in the future, developers will make the desktop application more independent.

To make calls, in addition to the conditions above, you need a microphone, speakers and a video camera. To start a call:

  • Select a chat from the list and click the audio or video call icon at the top of the window, next to the name of the interlocutor;
  • If the desired chat is not available, find the subscriber in contacts and open a new chat with him.
  • During a call, you can switch from audio to video by clicking the camera icon. The interlocutor must accept the request for video.

If the call cannot be started or is interrupted during communication, check the Internet connection on your smartphone. At the moment, audio-video calls are only available in private chats. WhatsApp is working on launching group calls.
