How to Share an Instagram Story to Your Story

It is straightforward to share someone else’s Story on Instagram.

The ability to add someone’s Story to your own depends heavily on whether or not the creator tagged you. If the user didn’t tag you, there is no option to add the Story to yours.

There are certainly more options below, but for now, the topic is how to share someone else’s Instagram Story, assuming you got tagged in it.

Open the “tagging notification” you received when tagged in the Story.
Tap on “Add to Your Story” and select “Send” to publish the Story as usual.

How to Send a Story to Someone Else

You could still send an Instagram Story to another user if you weren’t tagged. While this doesn’t post the Story for everyone else to see, this method is helpful if you want to show it to a few friends.

The original poster must set their account to “Public,” or you won’t see the option to send it to another person.

To send an existing Story to another user on Instagram, do this:

Tap on the “Story” at the top of your screen.

Setting Your Stories as Public to Make Them Shareable

Instagram Stories must get set to “Public” to reshare them—the default setting unless you manually change them to “Private.” Ideally, you should keep as much of your account public as practical and only go private if you’re having issues with someone. Otherwise, it defeats the object of being on social media.

A Public Instagram profile is available for anyone to see, and it will appear in searches and suggested lists. A Private account is viewable only by friends that you follow. If you don’t follow the other person, they cannot view your Private profile. It is not enough for them to follow you.

To set your account to public or private, do this:

Tap your “profile” icon on Instagram to access the Menu.
Select “Settings” then “Privacy.”
Choose “Account Privacy.”
Turn “Private Account” on or off, depending on your needs.

Your profile gets set to Public by default, so you only need to follow the above steps if changing to or from a private setting.

The second key component in sharing someone’s post is getting tagged within it. You can only repost a Story when the other person tags you. So, how can you tag someone in Instagram Stories?

Create your “Story” as usual with an image, captions, titles, stickers, etc.
Select “any space” in the image and write an “@mention” using their username.

You can tag multiple people within a Story, and each one receives a notification of the action. You cannot prevent this notification, but you can prevent your Story from getting reposted.

The first limitation is that Instagram won't let you share someone else's story if you're not tagged on it. Unfortunately, there is no way around this, at least for now. If you follow someone and that person posts a story without tagging you, you won't be able to share it. Even if that person also follows you, you still won't be able to share a story if it doesn't have your tag on it.

The second limitation is that stories can only be reposted from public accounts. This means that if you're tagged in someone's story, but that person's account is closed, you can't share it.

Instagram is a very fragmented system, so some features may not be available on some accounts. There are no special options to speed up the appearance of functions, you can reinstall the application, try to log into your account from a VPN, but this almost never helps.

Problem about a year

I have two accounts, one about five years old and one about two years old. Well, the newer function to share you stories works and I can also add my stories from the old account. And on the old account, the function stopped working. On a newer one, it works with both Android and iPhone, on an older one it does not work with both iPhone and Android. I tried switching between business and personal. Did not work out. now I have an iPhone.

Nothing helps me. Switched between business and personal accounts already 20 times. Reinstalling the application and vpn also do not help

My previously working insta account had 2 problems.

The "share in history" button does not work for me, not my own, not someone else's post.
You can't add a video to a story longer than 15 seconds. A 30 second video is not divided into 2 videos of 15 seconds each, as usually happens on working Instagram. It simply cuts the video at 15 seconds and removes the ending.

And I found a way to solve problem number 1, but clumsy! - maybe it will help someone too.

Initially installed the application on the iPhone. Then I switched to Huawei. And immediately the "share to story" option disappeared. Moreover, the new insta account on Huawei performs this function. But you want to keep the old account with posts. So, if you open the old Instagram on the iPhone or iPad, then the share button in the story is there again.

As I said, the method is clumsy, I don't want to jump between devices.
