Can you recover deleted WhatsApp messages?
Programs for Windows, mobile applications, games - EVERYTHING is FREE, in our closed telegram channel - Subscribe :)
Technically yes, but not in the way you think. You can restore deleted messages using a cloud or local backup if the latest backup is available to you.
However, if the latest backup is older than when you received/sent the deleted message, you will not be able to restore the deleted message. If you haven't set up a backup yet, you can't restore messages because you don't have them in any of your backups.
You may come across some third party applications that claim to recover your deleted messages, but this is simply not possible.
Whatsapp messages are end-to-end encrypted, which means the app will either need to access your encryption key or, in short, bypass the encryption.
This will put your personal data at risk indefinitely, so we do not recommend using such utilities. What's more, there is no evidence or reviews that currently show that any of these companies are delivering on their promises.
You can restore your messages either from a cloud backup to Google Drive or iCloud, or restore your messages using a local backup.
Let's look at the procedure for each of these methods.
Open WhatsApp on your iOS device and tap " Settings " at the bottom of the screen.
Click on " Chats ".
Now select " Chat Backup ".
You will now see information about your latest iCloud chat backup. If that backup is within the deleted message timeslot, then you're done.
Close and delete WhatsApp from your iOS device.
Now reinstall the application.
Once installed, log in to your WhatsApp account. Make sure you are using the same phone number as before.
After signing in, you will be prompted to restore the chat backup from iCloud. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your chat backup.
Your deleted message should now show up in chats if it was copied within the specified time period.
iOS does not allow or store any local WhatsApp chat backups, so unlike Android, you cannot restore deleted messages from a local backup on your iOS device.
Open WhatsApp on your Android device and tap the 3 dots menu icon in the top right corner of the screen.
Press and select " Settings ".
Click on " Chats ".
Click on " Chat Backup ".
In the Latest Backup section, find the latest backup information. If the latest backup is within the timespan of your deleted message, then you're done.
We also recommend that you determine the latest backup on your device.
In most cases, cloud backups and local backups are created at the same time, but sometimes you may need to restore an older backup from local storage, depending on the backup frequency.
However, if your cloud backup is the latest one, just close the app and continue deleting from your device.
After uninstalling, reinstall the app from the Play Store. You can use this link to quickly access the application page.
Open WhatsApp and sign in with your phone number. Make sure you are using the same phone number that you registered earlier.
After verifying your identity, you will be prompted to restore your Google Drive backup. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your backup.
Click " Next " when the backup is restored and your chats should appear on the home screen. Your media backups will be restored after all message backups are restored.
That's it! You should now be able to access the deleted message from recently restored chats on your device.
If your local backup has data that you want to restore, you can skip the cloud restore method altogether to have the best chance of recovering deleted messages. Follow the guide below to help you along the way.
First we need to delete all cloud backups created after the local backup you want to restore.
These backups will be difficult to restore, so make sure you identify the backups correctly before deleting them.
Download and install the Google Drive app on your device. Once installed, launch the app and sign in with your Google ID that you use to create WhatsApp backups.
After logging in, press the menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
Now click " Backup ".
Click on the menu icon with three dots next to the latest WhatsApp backup. Click and select " Delete Backup ".
Confirm your choice by pressing " Delete " again.
Now you can follow the guide below to restore the latest local WhatsApp backup on your account.
Open the desired file manager app on your android device and navigate to the following path given below.
Now you need to rename the following files in the current directory.
YYYY-MM-DD is the date used to refer to an older local backup on your Android device.
Now uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp on your Android device.
After reinstallation, launch the app and log in with your registered phone number.
When you sign in, you will be prompted to restore your WhatsApp backup. WhatsApp will automatically identify the renamed backup as the latest backup. Just continue with the restore process to restore the selected local backup.
After restoration, you will be able to access all your chats reserved for you. Your media backups will be restored once the chat restore process is complete.
That's it! You should now be able to access your deleted messages from an older WhatsApp backup.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to recover deleted messages. You can try third party utilities that claim to achieve this result at your own risk.
However, you can now enable backup on your device so that you can restore any deleted messages in the near future. Let's see how you can enable backup on your device.
First you need to enable iCloud Drive on your device so that your data can be backed up to the cloud. Once enabled, you can enable WhatsApp backup.
Open the Settings app on your device and tap your Apple ID at the top of the screen.
Now click " iCloud ".
Scroll down and turn on the " iCloud Drive " toggle.
Wait a few seconds and all apps that have permission to use iCloud Drive should appear in this section. Make sure that the toggle for WhatsApp is enabled in this section.
Alternatively, you can also turn off the toggles for any apps that you want to stop using your iCloud drive at this point.
That's it! You are now ready to enable cloud backup for whatsapp. Follow the guide below to get started.
Open WhatsApp and tap the " Settings " icon at the bottom of the screen.
Now press " Chats ".
Click and select " Chat Backup ".
Click " Automatic Backup " and select the backup frequency that best suits your needs.
That's it! Now you can log out of WhatsApp and be sure that all your data will be automatically saved to the cloud.
If you want to immediately backup all your current data, you can click on "Back Up Now".
Open WhatsApp on your Android device and tap the 3 dots menu icon in the top right corner of the screen.
Now click and select " Settings ".
Click on " Chats ".
Click and select " Chat Backup ".
Click on " Google Drive Backup ".
Now select the backup frequency that best suits your preferences.
If you have multiple accounts set up on your Android device, you will be prompted to select the one you want to use to back up your chats. Click and select the account you want to use for WhatsApp backup.
Also, click "Backup" at the top to backup all your current data to your Google Drive account immediately.
That's it! WhatsApp backup should now be enabled on your Android device.
Unfortunately, you can't restore your WhatsApp messages if you don't have a backup without choosing a third party utility. Since Whatsapp is an end-to-end encrypted messaging service, your backups are also encrypted.
In addition, the servers store minimal data from your chats, making it difficult to retrieve, let alone decrypt for normal viewing. Therefore, if you don't have a backup, you are unfortunately out of luck in this case.
If you're desperate and ready to try a third-party utility, we recommend starting with "Dr. Fone" by a Wondershare user. Wondershare is a respected name in the data recovery market that should help keep your privacy while recovering deleted messages.
Unfortunately, you can't restore your WhatsApp messages online either, whether you've used the desktop app or want to do it from a cloud backup.
As stated earlier, your Google Drive and iCloud cloud backups are encrypted by Whatsapp with a key unique to your registered account.
In addition, services such as iCloud additionally apply an encryption layer to keep data secure on their end.
While you can restore an encrypted copy of your Google Drive backups, you can't do it with iCloud. Hence, there is no way to recover deleted WhatsApp messages online.
Also, there is no way to recover deleted messages from your desktop app, but there is a neat trick that might work in some cases. Let's take a quick look at this.
You must have Whatsapp web notifications turned on for this trick to work properly. Also, this will only work with messages deleted in desktop chat since turning on your PC/Mac.
No fiddling with this procedure. Windows just shows you a preview of your notification content whenever you receive a Whatsapp message.
If you're like many other Internet users, you probably don't pay attention to these notifications. Consequently, they can accumulate on the right sidebar, especially if you have enabled Focus Assist.
Focus Assist will not notify you of incoming notifications, keeping them in the sidebar. If your message was recently deleted, chances are that you can still view its contents in a desktop notification. Just enter the notification area by clicking the icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.
Also, if you have enabled the Windows Timeline, your unread notifications will also be displayed there. If the notification area can't help you, it might be worth taking a look at the timeline.
Simply swipe up on the touchpad with three fingers to open the Windows Timeline. You can also press "Windows + Tab" on your keyboard to access the timeline.
Note: is the last method and only works in rare cases under ideal conditions. If you're desperate to recover your messages, it might be worth a try.
Restoring whatsapp messages from old device is quite easy if whatsapp is still active on the device.
Even if Whatsapp is not active, you can use an old local backup to restore messages from your old phone.
Keep in mind this will only work if you haven't deleted old backups or formatted local storage on your old phone.
First you need to create a backup to get started with this method. Follow the guide below depending on your device.
Open Whatsapp, click on the menu icon with three dots in the upper right corner and select "Settings".
Now click Chats.
Tap and select Chat Backup.
Click Backup if you already have a Google account.
If not, click Google Drive Backup to set up your account.
Once configured, click "Backup" at the top to create a recent backup.
You can now follow the Android recovery guide below.
Open Whatsapp and tap "Settings" at the bottom of the screen.
Click now on "Chats".
Click on Chat Backup.
Click "Back Up Now" to create a recent backup of all your chats.
You must have iCloud enabled for this to work on your device. You can follow our guide at the top of this post to enable iCloud Drive. In short, you need to go to the following path: Settings -> Apple ID -> iCloud -> Enable switch for iCloud drive -> Enable switch for Whatsapp on iCloud drive .
Once you have backed up, follow the instructions below to restore your messages.
You need to sign in with the same Google account on the new device that you used to create the WhatsApp backup. If you're already signed in, you can skip the first few steps and continue restoring your cloud backup.
Open Settings and tap Accounts.
Click on "+ Add Account".
Now click "Google" and sign in to your account.
Once logged in, download and install Whatsapp on your Android device.
Now just launch Whatsapp and register using your old phone number.
If you are using a new number, you will not be able to restore your messages. You will need to restore your messages using the old number and then change to the new number from WhatsApp in order to keep the old messages.
Once you log in, Whatsapp will automatically detect your cloud backup and ask you if you want to restore it. Click " Restore ".
Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your account. That's all! All your old messages should now be available on your new device.
For this to work, you will need to sign in with the same Apple ID you used on your old device. Start by downloading and installing Whatsapp on your device.
Now sign in to WhatsApp using the phone number that was registered on your old device.
Whatsapp will prompt you to restore messages from iCloud backup. Proceed with the recovery and subsequent setup of the account.
That's it! Your old messages should now be available on your new iPhone.
Open your old android device and navigate to the following path using a file explorer.
Internal Storage / WhatsApp / Databases
Here you will find a list of all the latest local backups on your Android device. Copy the latest version and transfer to a new device. We recommend that you simply email the file to yourself.
You may want to manually create a recent backup from WhatsApp in order to transfer all your recent messages.
Now go to your new Android device and install Whatsapp on it. Sign in with your phone number that you used on your old device.
Manually create a temporary local backup after logging in.
Now upload the file you emailed yourself to your local storage. The file will be downloaded to the "Download" folder, which is fine for now.
Navigate to this location on your new phone using the file manager.
Internal Storage / WhatsApp / Databases
Now copy the name of your latest backup to this folder.
Go back to downloads and rename the backup we just downloaded from the old phone.
Copy the newly renamed backup to the location below.
Internal Storage / WhatsApp / Databases
You will be prompted to replace the file or skip the transfer. Choose to replace the file.
Now uninstall and reinstall Whatsapp on your device.
If you also backed up your Whatsapp on your new phone to the cloud when you created the dummy local backup, you MUST delete your cloud backup before proceeding with the next steps.
You can follow our guide above or follow these instructions: Google Drive -> Menu -> Backups -> Whatsapp Backup -> Delete Backup -> Delete.
Log in with your registered phone number.
You will now be prompted to restore your messages from a local backup. Click "Restore" to continue the process.
Continue setting up your account.
That's it! If everything works as intended, all your chats from your old phone should now be available on your new device.
Sender messages are notoriously difficult to recover once they have been deleted by the sender and there is currently no safe and reliable way to do this. Unfortunately, if you want to recover deleted sender messages, you're out of luck.
You may have come across apps that claim to do this, but most of these apps are variances from the official WhatsApp app with minor modifications to add these features and more.
Since their code has been redacted, you cannot rely on their encryption or trust their privacy, even if they claim to send data through Whatsapp servers, as you will still be logging into a third-party Whatsapp using your original details, which is rather dubious at its best and very intrusive at its worst.
We do not recommend the use of such applications in order to maintain your privacy and the security of your data.
Databases are local backups and encrypted chat data available in your local storage. In most cases, you can restore your chats from existing databases if you use the same number that was registered at the time these databases were created.
However, keep in mind that this is only possible on Android devices, as you need access to your file system, which is still behind closed doors in iOS, and recent improvements to the Files app don't count.
Just follow our # Method 2 to recover whatsapp messages from old phone to recover your messages from whatsapp database.
You need to essentially rename the database to look like the latest and vice versa.
After renaming, you can reinstall Whatsapp and the app will prompt you to restore the backup you just renamed, which should help you get back all the lost messages from the particular database.
We hope that with the help of this guide you were able to at least restore your backup copies of deleted messages. If you're desperate and have opted for a third-party utility, we recommend that you be careful about granting root user permissions, to say the least. If you have further questions feel free to contact us using the comments section below.

5 billion users and more than 65 million messages are sent daily. As with any other data on your iPhone, WhatsApp chats are important and losing them can be a problem. Luckily, there are several different methods that you can use to restore or transfer your WhatsApp. This article will help you recover and transfer WhatsApp data in three different ways. If you want to transfer WhatsApp messages from one phone to another, using the ChatStorage.sqlite files, go to Method 3 to guide you through the process.
When iCloud is enabled, WhatsApp can back up messages directly. This approach only works when using the same phone number and iCloud account. Methods 2 and 3 in this guide can be used for different numbers and accounts.
Although this is the most direct way to access your messages, this method does not allow you to choose which messages you restore: this is an all-or-nothing restore. Thus, using WhatsApp backups directly is best used when transferring messages to a new iPhone if WhatsApp messages have not been transferred using the normal iPhone backup and restore process.
You can access the WhatsApp chat archive in the WhatsApp app itself by following these steps:
Open WhatsApp and tap Settings in the bottom right corner.
Select Chats then Chat Backup
View WhatsApp backups
Here you can see when the last backup was made.
To restore from an internal backup, you need:
Make sure you have a recent WhatsApp backup. You can select Back Up Now to create a new backup (though note that this will delete data from the previous backup.).
Delete WhatsApp from your iPhone.
This will delete all chats that have not been saved to WhatsApp.
Install WhatsApp from the app store.
Set up WhatsApp as usual with the same phone number you used before.
WhatsApp will ask if you want to restore chat history from iCloud; to continue, click Restore Chat History .
If you want to access your WhatsApp messages as a whole or individually, you can use this method to do so. We describe how to transfer WhatsApp messages from one iPhone to another in method 3 below.
Deleted WhatsApp messages can be quickly restored from iPhone backup in 3 steps:
WhatsApp conversations are not stored on WhatsApp servers, so restoring them directly from the application itself is not possible.
The good news is that your iPhone has most likely already saved your WhatsApp chats in an iTunes or iCloud backup - and you can retrieve the messages you've saved on your iPhone or iPad.
Restoring an iCloud backup on your iPhone may result in data loss because it will delete everything created after the backup. We do not recommend doing this if you are interested in getting only WhatsApp data and not restoring your phone to the state it was backed up.
Before starting, make sure that your device does not overwrite your last backup. To do this, make sure your device is not charging or connected via USB (iCloud backups can be updated and overwritten automatically if the device is connected to Wi-Fi, charging and locked).
You can get it for Mac or Windows PC.
iPhone Backup Extractor will automatically check for backups in the default folder.
If your backup is located elsewhere, select a folder by clicking Add backups`.
Access iPhone backups using iPhone Backup Extractor
Click "Add iCloud Backups" in the app's iPhone backup browser on the left side of the app, and then sign in to iCloud with the pop-up window. You will need your iCloud username and password.
Sign in to iCloud
If there are multiple backups available from iTunes or iCloud, select the one that contains your WhatsApp messages from the list of backups shown on the left side of the app. If you have an encrypted iPhone backup, you will be prompted to enter your backup password now.
Once your iPhone backup is uploaded to iPhone Backup Extractor, you can see the number of WhatsApp messages found in your backup in the Overview panel .
Restore WhatsApp Data with iPhone Backup Extractor
If you want to extract all your messages, click on the WhatsApp icon to extract your messages.
iPhone Backup Extractor will extract messages in PDF format by default, although you can also save your files in CSV or HTML format. We recommend that you extract your data in PDF format, as this format is easier to share and read across devices. Saving as CSV files will save all your messages as text in one file with images extracted to a separate folder, while HTML files will be saved as separate files that can be opened in a browser). To extract files in CSV or HTML format, click " Extract in the top bar, then select Whatsapp from the dropdown and select the file type you want to use.
Recovered WhatsApp messages in PDF format
When extracting your messages, you can choose the location where you want to export the files. the saved messages folder will open automatically after the export is completed.
Alternatively, if you prefer to extract individual chats, you can do so using panel Preview iPhone Backup Extractor.
Here's how:
Open your iPhone backup and select panel Preview . Scroll down to find the WhatsApp icon in the left list and select it. Select all the chats you want to export. Click Extract to extract the selected messages as a PDF.
iPhone Backup Extractor preview showing WhatsApp messages
The latter method can be used to transfer WhatsApp message data between phones as described in the walkthrough below, or by other methods if you have a copy of these backups stored in a safe place. For example, you can use these instructions to restore your old WhatsApp messages database on the same iPhone, or simply transfer your WhatsApp history to another device. You can even convert your iPhone's WhatsApp database and import it to your Android device.
The walkthrough below uses two devices:
Here is how to recover your WhatsApp messages on iPhone:
Back up your iPhone to the device that contains the messages you want to restore.
After logging in, you will be able to select and download any backup file that exists in your account. If you already have the latest backup, you can skip this step.
