How to set up WhatsApp Web on your iPhone
WhatsApp Web was first introduced by the company back in January 2015, and was welcomed by users of the popular messaging client. However, the functionality wasn’t available to iPhone users, and while the rest of the WhatsApp community enjoyed the benefits of a desktop WhatsApp client, iOS users were left behind – until now. How to set up WhatsApp Web on your iPhone: What is WhatsApp Web?
WhatsApp Web is a relatively new web client, announced by the company on 21 January 2015, and offers WhatsApp users the opportunity to access their WhatsApp messages on a PC or Mac. It also meant that users of the popular messaging client could directly save received media to their computer, instead of having to first save it on their smartphone and then transfer it.
There were a handful of restrictions with WhatsApp Web when it first launched; first of all, you were only able to use Google Chrome to access the WhatsApp Web website, and secondly, it wasn’t available for iPhone users due to “Apple platform limitations”. This meant that Android, Windows, Blackberry and even Nokia Symbian devices could access the service, but iOS users were left in the lurch.
However, as of August 2015, the company has enabled WhatsApp Web for iOS devices, meaning that iPhone users can now send and receive WhatsApp messages on their Mac or PC. It’s quite peculiar that the company added support without announcing it, with the news breaking via a WhatsApp user on Reddit. The company now allows the use of other browsers to access the WhatsApp Web client, though it’s suggested when accessing the site via Safari to switch to either Google Chrome, Opera or Firefox.
Even though WhatsApp now allows the web client to be accessed via any browser, you can’t access it via Safari on an iPad.
If you try to access WhatsApp Web via an iPad, you’re redirected to the WhatsApp home page. We’re not quite sure why WhatsApp has put this restriction in place, as many iPad users would love to have some kind of WhatsApp client available to them. It may be due to “Apple platform limitations” as noted before, but until WhatsApp explains itself, it’s anyone’s guess. We’ve reached out to the company for comment, and will update the article if/when we hear back.

How to set up WhatsApp Web on your iPhone
Step 1: Make sure you’re running the latest version of WhatsApp on your iPhone. While many new features require an app update, there’s not an update available to enable WhatsApp Web. All you need to do is make sure you’re already running the latest version of the app, which at the time of writing is version 2.12.5.
Step 2: Open WhatsApp and access the Settings menu.
There should be a new menu underneath “Tell a Friend” named “WhatsApp Web” – tap it.
Step 3: On your Mac, head to web.whatsapp.com. You can technically use any browser to access the client (we’re using Safari), but WhatsApp recommends using either Google Chrome, Opera or Firefox.
Step 4: on your iPhone, within the WhatsApp Web menu, tap ‘Scan QR code’. Follow the instructions on your iPhone and align your QR code scanner with the QR code displayed on the WhatsApp Web website. Once aligned, you should see a pop-up on screen confirming the setup was a success.
Step 5: You’re all done! You can now send and receive WhatsApp messages as well as access all received media (including voice notes!) on your Mac.
One issue we thought we were going to have when using the WhatsApp Web client was a huge build up of WhatsApp notifications on our iPhone. However, we were pleased to see that as soon as we’d read the message on our Mac, the notification disappeared from our iPhone’s lock screen/notification centre.
Deleted messages should also sync between the two clients, though some users have reported issues with this feature, with deleted media still appearing in a chat window.
The WhatsApp Web client will also display chat notifications whenever you receive a new message, which is a great feature to have, but not if you’re using a shared computer.
Don’t fret though, as there’s a way to disable notifications. From the WhatsApp Web interface, tap the menu button (three dots) and select the Notifications sub menu. From here, you can disable the notification pop-up and the accompanying sound, or alternatively, you can disable notifications for a specific amount of time (one hour, one day or one week).

How to set up WhatsApp Web on your iPhone: Install a third-party WhatsApp client for your Mac
Although the introduction of a WhatsApp Web client is a great addition, we would also like to have a WhatsApp app for Mac (and iPad too!).
Though currently there are no plans for the company to create either app, there is an unofficial WhatsApp app available for Mac users, created by a fan. It’s basically the WhatsApp Web interface, but in a separate app instead of a page in your browser.
It offers the same setup process and options available in the web client, so if you’d prefer an app to a web interface, head over to the Github page now and download it!

WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop function as extensions of your mobile WhatsApp account, and all messages are synced between your phone and your computer, so you can view conversations on any device regardless of where they are initiated. Here, we’ll walk you through how to use the WhatsApp browser app.
The process and interface are identical in iOS 14 and iOS 15.
Similarly, the Android 12 interface is the same as the previous version.
How to use WhatsApp Web for iOS 15
Using WhatsApp for iOS 15 is easy, just follow these steps.
Step 1: To launch WhatsApp Web, just click on its URL in Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, or Edge and scan the QR code on the page with the WhatsApp mobile app from your phone. WhatsApp Web automatically launches in the browser and remains active until you log out on your computer or phone.
Step 2: Go to the WhatsApp website to link WhatsApp Web with your mobile phone app.
Step 3: Launch WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android mobile phone.
Step 4: Scan the QR code that appears on the site with your phone open to WhatsApp.
Step 5: On the iPhone, select Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop.
Step 6: Choose Scan QR code and hold your phone up to the code to pair it.
How to use WhatsApp for Android 12
For Android 12, here are the steps to follow after opening the WhatsApp website on your computer:
Step 1: On Android phones, launch WhatsApp and select the three dots at the upper right from the Chat pane.
Step 2: Select Linked devices and then select Link a device.
Step 3: Hold your phone up to the QR code on your computer to pair it.
Step 4: Your smartphone account is now linked to the web version of the app.
Step 5: From there you can send and receive messages from your computer’s desktop browser.
WhatsApp Web features
After scanning the QR code, you can view your WhatsApp chat list directly on the web page. On the left, you can see your chats by clicking a contact to open the chat and your message history, if you saved it.
On the top left of the Web page, three icons are available: Status, New chat, and Menu, which offers a list of nested options.
The Status option reveals all statuses posted by your contacts along with the ability to respond from the reply area at the bottom of the pane. Clicking New chat opens the contacts list on the left side of the page. From here, you can create a new group or begin a conversation.
The three-dot drop-down menu lets you create a new group, change information in your profile, search archived chats, view starred messages, change settings like notifications and chat wallpaper, or log out.
Sending messages
WhatsApp Web is as easy to use as the mobile app, and the interface will look familiar.
Step 1: To send a message from your desktop, click on an existing chat or click on the New chat icon and select the contact you wish to interact with. Here, you can see previous chats, if they are saved, or alternately you see the message bar at the bottom.
Step 2: Click on the Type a message bar and start chatting.
Step 3: When you’re done with your message, click the Enter key on your keyboard to transmit — or just click on the Send icon.
Step 4: If you want to include documents, images, or recordings, just attach the files from your desktop and send them as you would any other message by clicking on the paper clip Attach icon at the bottom of the current chat.
Install WhatsApp on your system
Additionally, WhatsApp gives users the option to have a Windows or Mac desktop client that you can download directly from the app’s website.
Step 1: Follow the installer’s instruction prompts once you download the app (which is essentially just a replica of the web-based app) on Windows. If you’re using a Mac, you can launch WhatsApp once you drag the icon to your Applications folder.
Step 2: Launch it, and you’ll receive a message asking you to scan a QR code on both the web browser version and the web app.
Remember that WhatsApp keeps you signed in until you manually sign out.
Step 3: When you’re ready to sign out, navigate to the WhatsApp menu on your cell phone and select Log out from all devices. If you’re on a computer, you can click the three-dot icon at the top of the message and select the Log out button.
Desktop video calling on the horizon
WhatsApp has announced exciting new plans to employ multi-party desktop videoconferencing in its web app. This endeavor will allow a maximum of 50 participants in each call. These plans will make WhatsApp an effective alternative to Zoom, Skype, and Google Meet, offering a fantastic convenience to WhatsApp users worldwide. Unfortunately, users can’t take advantage of this feature just yet since it’s still in the unreleased beta version. But if you have the app’s mobile version, you can set up a group video chat.
