Instagram’s mute feature lets you silence stories from accounts you follow without having to actually unfollow those accounts — which is perfect if you’ve ever had a friend who posts *way* too many Instagram Stories!
But did you know that you can hide your stories from other users as well?

How to Hide Instagram Stories From Other People
You have a few different options when it comes to hiding your Instagram Stories from other people.
If you want to prevent someone from seeing anything you post to your story in the future, simply head to your profile and open your account settings.
Next, tap Privacy.
And then Story.
Tap the number of people next to Hide Story From.
Select the people you’d like to hide your story from, then tap Done.
You can also choose to hide your story from specific users from as you’re looking at who’s seen your story.
Just tap the ellipsis button to the right of their name and select Hide Story From [Username].
If your story is appearing on a location or hashtag page, you’ll see it at the top of the list of people who have seen your story. You can tap “x” to the right of a location or hashtag page to hide your story from it.
Note: When you hide Instagram Stories from certain people, they won’t be able to see anything you post to your story in the future.
Hiding Instagram Stories from someone is also different from blocking them and doesn’t prevent them from seeing your profile and posts.
To mute an account’s Instagram Stories, all you have to do is tap the ellipsis button (“…”) in the top-right corner of any post and tap Mute.
From there, you can choose whether to mute posts or mute posts and stories from an account.
You can also mute posts and stories by pressing and holding on a story in your tray or from a profile.
This moves the account’s story to the end of your queue and prevents it from auto-playing.
Note: The accounts you mute will not be aware that you’ve muted them — and you can always unmute an account to get their stories back in your tray! Just re-follow the steps above and select Unmute.
Why You May Want to Mute or Hide Instagram StoriesWe all have one… an irritating Instagram account that clogs your stories with photos and videos you have no intention of engaging with.
It could be an old friend or recent ex, but whatever the social dynamic, the ability to hide an accounts’ Instagram Stories from appearing in your tray without actually unfollowing them gives you way more control over the content you see!
It’s also a lot less drastic than unfollowing someone.
With the ability to mute stories on Instagram, you can avoid seeing the content you dislike (or prefer not to see) without affecting your real-life relationships with those users.
There’s also a possibility that Instagram algorithm takes this information into consideration when deciding what kind of content to serve up in your feed and Explore page.

How To Mute Someone’s Instagram Stories Without Them Knowing

We’ve all got that friend who insists on posting the entirety of the concert they’re attending.
Their Instagram story looks like this: ---------------. Each story as equally blurry, dark, and blown-out by them loudly singing along as the last. (This comes from a place of zero judgment. We’ve all been that friend.) If you’re wondering how to mute someone’s Instagram stories, so you don’t have to tap through or swipe past, you are in luck. The Instagram gods/programmers have given you an out.
Muting someone’s stories is pretty simple. Here it is in bullet points to make it even easier:
- First, you’ll need to see their story pop up at the top of your feed.
- Now, tap and hold down their profile picture. You doing it? Good.
- Then, you’ll be prompted with two options: Mute and View Profile. Select Mute > Mute Story.
- Voila! Their stories are muted. Now, continue scrolling and double-tapping without the temptation or distraction of that person’s story.
If you’ve made a muting mistake or you know your friend is no longer posting indistinguishable concert stories, you can unmute someone’s stories the exact same way.
Repeat the steps above, and when you get to step three, you’ll select “unmute” instead of “mute.” Easy peasy.

(For the record, I would never Mute the Lisa Frank Instagram account. It is a sparkly and nostalgic treasure.)
“Stories you've muted will appear at the end of the bar at the top of feed, and won't have a colorful ring around them when they're updated,” a post on Instagram’s help page states. However, “muted stories won't automatically play when you watch stories.” So, you’ll still know they’re posting stories; they just won’t automatically play.
“Muting someone's story is different from unfollowing them,” Instagram’s post clarifies, “and you'll still see their posts in feed.” You’ll see any posts they chose to make in the grid. Those will appear in your feed as per usual. You just won’t be privy to their stories.
If your big question is does someone know if I’ve muted their Instagram stories? The answer is no.
They may notice your username isn’t among the handles of people who’ve viewed your story, but they won’t get any kind of notification that they’ve been muted.
Let’s say you want to hide your Instagram story from certain people. You can do that too. Here are some helpful bullet points on that:
- Go to your profile and tap the three horizontal lines in the upper corner. This is also known as the “hamburger” despite its obvious lack of condiments.
- Then, tap Settings.
- Now, you’ll select Privacy > Story.
- Here next to “Hide Story From” you’ll be able to tap the number of people you want to, as the tab suggests, hide your story from.
- Now, select the people you want to hide your story from. Bye, Aunt Deb who doesn’t need to see me doing karaoke. Later, Kid I Babysat For In High School Who I Begrudgingly Let Follow Me.
- Finally, tap Done. You are now free to post bonkers-level stories without the judging eyes of Aunt Deb.
“Keep in mind that hiding your story from someone is different from blocking them,” Instagram states.
It also “doesn't prevent them from seeing your profile and posts.”

Instagram first added the mute feature back in May 2018. “Mute can make your feed even more personalized to what matters to you,” an Instagram spokesperson said to CNBC. “We’ve also heard it may be a useful tool for managing complex social dynamics.” “Complex social dynamics” is the kind way to say “I don’t want to see every second of your beach trip, David.”
Let’s say you want to fully mute someone. They’re going to vacation to Cabo and you know don’t want to subject yourself to the FOMO. When you see a post from the person you want to mute, tap the three dots that are next to their account handle. Then, select “Mute” and hit “confirm.” You can also choose to mute but posts and stories if your FOMO is through the roof.
Again, no one will know if they've been muted. So, you're free to unshackle yourself from the FOMO as your please.

The fact is that when you have an open account, it means that all your Stories are available to any user. In the same way, you see all the stories, the people you follow, and you can go to the page of any user and see his stories.

How to hide other people's stories on Instagram
If you don't want the stories of a certain person to be shown at the top of the Instagram feed without unfollowing them, you can hide them.
To do this, open the Instagram app on your smartphone and navigate to your feed.
Tap and hold on the avatar of the user whose stories you want to hide. A small menu will appear where you need to select "Switch to silent mode."
In the next window, tap "Hide History".
You have hidden other people's stories, now they will be at the end of the stories feed. When updating, they will not be highlighted and will no longer open during automatic viewing of stories.
Please note that hiding stories is not the same as unfollowing a person, so you will follow him and see his posts in the feed as before.
To allow the display of other people's stories again, repeat the same steps and select: "Unblock story".

How to hide my stories on Instagram from a person

Again we draw your attention to the fact that hiding stories does not block the user and does not close access to the profile or posts. In the same way, it works in your direction, so it is also impossible to find out who hid your stories.
Also, you should consider the privacy settings of your account. If you have switched to a private account, then only approved followers will see the story you post.
