Question from Peggy L.: I know my question will probably make me sound dumb but I have to ask it anyway.

Several old friends from my school days had trouble finding me on Facebook because they were searching for my maiden name.

How do I add my maiden name to my Facebook profile but have it separate from my married name? In other words display my married name like it is now with my maiden name underneath it?

I know this can be done because I see it like that on other people’s profiles, but I can’t figure out how to get it onto mine. (I know, I’m a dummy when it comes to this techie stuff.)

Rick’s answer: That question doesn’t make you sound dumb at all, Peggy. Lots of other folks have asked me the very same thing.

I’ll be glad to help you get your maiden name on your profile page. Luckily, it’s actually very easy to accomplish. Just follow the steps below for the device/app you use to access Facebook.

If you use Facebook in a web browser on a laptop or desktop computer:

1 – Log into your Facebook account.

2 – Visit your Timeline page.

3 – Click the About link that’s located on the menu bar just below your cover photo.

4 – Click the Details About You link over in the left-hand column.

5 – Click Add a nickname, a birth name…

6 – Click the word Nickname in the box, then select Maiden Name from the drop-down menu.

7 – Type your maiden name into the text box, then check the little box beside Show at top of profile.

8 – Click Save.

If you use the Facebook app on a mobile device:

1 – Log into your Facebook account.

2 – Visit your Timeline page.

3 – Tap Profile Settings icon (it looks like three dots).

4 – Tap Edit Profile.

5 – Scroll down and tap Edit Your About Info.

6 – Scroll down to the “Other Names” section and tap Add Other Name.

7 – In the “Name Type” field, tap the word Nickname.

8 – Tap Maiden Name.

9 – In the “Name” field, tap What’s your maiden name?.

10 – Type your maiden name into the text box.

11 – Tap the Save button.

That’s all there is to it. From now on your old friends should be able to find you on Facebook by searching for your maiden name.

Classic version for mobile browser

Add another name

Click the icon in the upper right corner of the Facebook window, and then select your name.

Select the View Info section.

Scroll down and under Other names, click Enter your nickname or birth name.

Next to Name Type, select the one you want.

In the Name section, enter your other name.

Select the Show at top of profile check box to display a different name at the top of the profile.

Click Save.

Change or remove a different name

At first glance it seems that the task will not cause any difficulties, but there are some details and nuances that you need to know about. The first thing to do is to enter your personal profile. To do this, you need to enter your username and password in the appropriate fields.

Next, in the header of the site (top right) there is a small icon in the form of an arrow, which we click on and then find in the "Settings" menu that opens.

Go to the settings, move the cursor to the line "surname" and select "edit".

Then you need to fill out a new form, enter a new surname (the name and patronymic can also be changed in this section). Then click on "Check Changes".

Symbols, numbers, incorrectly used capital letters, repeated symbols or punctuation marks.
Symbols from different languages.
Any rank (eg professional, religious).
Words or phrases instead of a name.
Offensive or obscene words.

Some important rules:

Your profile should be the name your friends call you in everyday life.
You can use a pseudonym as a first or middle name if it is somehow related to your real name (for example, Misha instead of Mikhail).
You can also add a different name to your account (such as your maiden name, nickname, or professional title).
Profiles are for individual use only. You can create a Page for a company, organization, or idea.
Fake pages are not allowed.

If your profile does not contain the name you use in everyday life, update it.

If you would like to enter a name on your account that is different from the name on your ID (for example, maiden name, nickname, profession), go to facebook.com using a browser and sign in.

When you are signed in:

Tap More.
Touch your name.
Tap Update Info.
Scroll down and tap Add Nickname, Birth Name... under Other Names.

Next to Name Type, select the type of name you want to add.

In the Name field, enter your alternate name.
Check the "Show at the top of profile" checkbox to have a different name appear on your profile.
Tap Save.

Keep in mind that if you don't check the box to make your other name appear at the top of your profile, it will still appear in the Info section of your profile and in search results.

Take the change of first and last name seriously, because in a social network it is the first thing that other users pay attention to.
