How to Make WhatsApp Video or Voice Calls on Mac & PC

A lot of WhatsApp users make use of the desktop client to stay connected and respond to text messages while they’re using their computers. And the latest versions of WhatsApp can also make video calls and voice calls as well, right from a Mac or Windows PC by using the desktop app.

Video calling is considered as an essential feature nowadays as a lot of people use it for organizing classes, online meetings, family gatherings, and more. Sure, it’s super convenient to make video calls on your iPhone using WhatsApp, but in a professional work environment, you’d ideally want to use a fixed webcam that’s connected to your computer. Most social networking apps allow users to make video calls on the desktop, and now WhatsApp includes the capability as well.

If you’re interested in making WhatsApp voice and video calls from a Windows PC or MacOS computer, read along!

The voice and video calling options are only available in the desktop app and not the WhatsApp web client. So, make sure you’ve installed WhatsApp Desktop on your PC or Mac first before you go ahead with these steps:

  1. Launch WhatsApp desktop on your computer, link your account using your phone and set up the client.

  2. Once you’re in the app, select the message thread or open a new chat and then click on the video or phone icon at the top of the chat.

  3. This will bring up a tiny call interface at the top-right corner of your screen. Here, you’ll see the progress of your call and options to mute your mic, end the call, and even switch between voice and video. To access even more options, you can click on the triple-dot icon.

  4. Now, you’ll have the options to change the microphone and webcam used by WhatsApp which can be helpful if you have multiple peripherals connected to your computer.

  5. As for group calls, you cannot do that directly in WhatsApp. However, you’ll be prompted to create a Messenger Room instead. To get started with this, click on the triple-dot icon in the main menu of the app located right above the search bar.

  6. Now, choose the “Create a room” option from the context menu to continue.

  7. When you get the prompt, click on “Continue in Messenger” which will open up a web page in your browser. Log in with your Facebook account and you’ll be able to set up a Messenger Room. You can learn about creating Messenger Rooms right here.

That’s pretty much all there is to it. Pretty straightforward, isn’t it? This is the same regardless of whether you’re on a Mac or Windows PC.

You no longer need to resort to other services like FaceTime, Zoom, Skype, etc. just to make video calls and organize meetings on your computer. Considering tons of people use WhatsApp already, this might be the easiest way to stay connected through video calling.

Apart from being able to make phone calls, you’ll be able to convenient accept all your WhatsApp calls using your computer. From now on, whenever you’re working on your laptop or desktop PC, you don’t have to go grab your iPhone every time you get a WhatsApp phone call.

Of course, if you aren’t impressed with the interface or you have privacy concerns, you have other popular options with multi-platform support too, like Telegram for example. Just like WhatsApp, Telegram offers a desktop app which you can use to make video and voice calls too. Signal Messenger is yet another great option for privacy buffs, but you can also make video calls with WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Skype, and of course FaceTime too.

Hopefully, you’re able to get a hang of WhatsApp’s desktop call interface pretty quickly. What’s your favorite thing about the desktop app? Were you using WhatsApp Web until now? Feel free to share your impressions with us and don’t forget to drop your valuable feedback in the comments section down below.

  • Make sure WhatsApp supports calling from your desktop on your device. This feature is currently only available on macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 or newer.
  • For the best call quality, use an external microphone other than the one on your computer.
  • Give WhatsApp all the necessary permissions to make and receive voice and video calls on your computer.
  • Agree that you cannot make group calls on WhatsApp because the application does not support it.
  • Make sure you are not using any virtual devices for audio or video.

former Yahoo! Whatsapp has been incredibly successful as a completely free way to send texts, files, and make phone calls to anyone using the app.

The application is truly multi-platform and is available for a variety of phones, including iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows. If you're like many users, you might not realize that you can use it in yet another convenient way: on your laptop or desktop.

WhatsApp has been providing a web client for some time now, so you can access the WhatsApp interface from your computer right in your browser window. In May 2016, the creators of the app also launched a standalone desktop client called WhatsApp Desktop, available for Mac OS X 10.9 and up, and Windows 8 and up. You can use WhatsApp from your phone, through the website, and through the WhatsApp Desktop app.

WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop

The two applications are very similar, but the WhatsApp Desktop version offers two unique features and the web client is much more mobile.

With WhatsApp Desktop, you can use keyboard shortcuts while chatting, and notifications can be sent directly to your desktop. It also seems to be more reliable and more like a typical program; after all, it's just a regular program that installs like any other.

WhatsApp Web, on the other hand, is much easier if you're new to the program. All you need to do is enter the site from any browser through their link. All your messages appear instantly, no matter what computer you use, where it is located, be it public or private.

Otherwise, both versions of WhatsApp work the same way and allow you to send images, text, files, and more.

How to use WhatsApp from a computer

If you don't have a mobile app, you need to download it before setting up WhatsApp to use it on your computer.

Then visit the WhatsApp website for the browser version or download the desktop program through the WhatsApp download page.

If you are using the desktop version, select the download link that matches your computer's operating system (Windows or Mac).

When opened, the desktop program and the web client will show a large QR code.

  1. Open WhatsApp from your phone.
  2. Go to Settings > WhatsApp Web / Desktop.
  3. Scroll down and select Scan QR code. Your phone may ask you for permission to use the camera. Allow it.
  4. Hold your phone close to the computer screen to scan the QR code. This will do everything automatically; You just have to point the camera in that direction.

  1. The WhatsApp client will open immediately and show you all the messages you already have on your phone. You can then close WhatsApp on your phone and use it from your computer.

WhatsApp initially generated revenue by charging a download fee - a one-time fee of $0.99 for iPhone users and an annual fee of $0.99 for Android users. However, WhatsApp hit its biggest payday in 2014 when Facebook acquired it for 19billion dollars, and the company did away with royalties. In February 2016, WhatsApp announced that a billion people are using the messaging platform.

WhatsApp offers some fun features that are worth experimenting with. WhatsApp Desktop lets you view photos, videos, and documents on your hard drive, which you can send directly from the chat interface. Make sure the receiver is running the latest version of WhatsApp Desktop to ensure that the latest features are included.

If your computer has a webcam, you can access it directly on the interface to take a photo that you can send via chat. Another feature unique to WhatsApp Desktop is voice messages. Start recording by clicking on the microphone at the bottom right corner of the interface and record a spoken message.

Also, given WhatsApp's huge user base, you probably already have friends who use the service, so you can start chatting and chatting right away.

Limitations
