How do we change our name on facebook

How to Change Your Name on Facebook

  • You can change your name on Facebook in the Settings section of the website or mobile app.
  • You can only change your Facebook name once every 60 days.
  • Nicknames can be used if they adhere to Facebook's community standards.

Whether you've recently changed your last name or want to add a fun nickname, changing your name on your Facebook profile is a fairly straightforward process.

Note: You can only change your Facebook name once every 60 days, though, so if you're going for something humorous, make sure you can live with it for at least two months.

Here's what you need to know about Facebook's name change policy and how to  change your name on a desktop browser or the Facebook mobile app.

What is Facebook's name change policy?

While you don't have to use your full legal name on Facebook, there are rules as to what types of names you can and cannot use.

Facebook prefers its users to use the name they go by in everyday life. Facebook names cannot include the following:

  • Symbols, numbers, nonstandard capitalization, repeating characters, or punctuation
  • Characters from more than one language
  • Titles of any kind (whether professional, religious, or something else)
  • Words or phrases instead of a name
  • Words or phrases that go against Facebook's Community Standards
  • Words or phrases that represent organizations instead of people. Facebook Profiles are for individuals, while Pages are for businesses, organizations, and ideas

As far as nicknames go, Facebook allows them for first or middle names as long as they are a variation of your actual name (like Abby instead of Abigail). Impersonating other users is not allowed on Facebook and violates their Community Standards.

Note: Choosing a name that matches an ID or document on Facebook's approved ID list can help you regain access to your Facebook account

Reinvent Yourself (or Disappear): How to Change Your Name on Facebook

(Credit: Bob Al-Greene)

Facebook has long required people to use their real names; it's even penalized people(Opens in a new window) for using real names that sounded fake to the social network's algorithm. But if you change your name, go by a nickname, or just want to try to game Facebook's system, you can change the name that displays on your profile with just a few clicks (though there are some restrictions(Opens in a new window)).

Change Your Name

Click your profile image, then open Settings & Privacy > Settings. Select your name in the sidebar, then click the Edit link next to your current name.

Mobile users can tap their profile icon in the app, then select the gear icon. Open Personal information, then choose Name to reach the same place.

You can then change your first, middle, or last name in the appropriate field. Select the Review Change button and enter your Facebook password to make it final. Facebook will warn you that your name can only be changed once in a 60-day period, so make sure you have it right.

This change will also synchronize with Meta-owned Instagram, if you have that turned on in Settings, so you don't need to worry about changing it there as well. If you need to turn that on, choose the Manage sync settings link above the name fields.

On the web, you can enable Sync profile info on the next page. Mobile users must tap Profiles, then choose the correct profile. Tap your Instagram profile, then enable Sync profile info.

Add Alternate Names

You can also add additional names to your profile, like nicknames, married names, maiden names, legal names, or any other moniker someone may use to find you on the platform.

To add an alternate name, open to your profile, then click the About tab and choose the Details about you option. On mobile, go to your profile and tap Edit profile. Scroll to the bottom and tap Edit Your About Info. Select Add a nickname (Add Other Name on mobile) and select the type of name you want to add from the drop-down menu. Type the name and hit Save.

Alternate names are automatically public and will help others find you on Facebook. If you want the new name to be part of your display name, enable the Show at top of profile option.

In order to make sure everything is as it should be, you'll want to view your profile from the eyes of your friends. You can do this from your profile by selecting the three-dot menu under the Edit Profile button. Choose the View As option to see what information is public and make sure your new name is visible to all.

Facebook is the largest social network in the world. The number of its users has already exceeded 1.5 billion. Anyone can register their own profile here. The information entered by the user when registering an account is not permanently linked to the page - personal data can be changed if necessary. At the same time, it is important to indicate information that is true - this is the only way you can be verified by the moderators. In this article, we'll show you how to change your Facebook name from your phone. nine0003

In addition, we recommend that you study the video instruction, which clearly demonstrates the process of changing personal data on Facebook from a smartphone.

Requirements and restrictions

Before proceeding with the change of name, consider the requirements and restrictions, we consider the requirements provided by the social network. There are several in total:

  1. The name must not contain obscene words.
  2. Personal data cannot contain punctuation marks, symbols or numbers.
  3. Each word must be written in one language (no foreign characters).
  4. Full name can be changed only once every 2 months, only 4 times in the entire history of maintaining the page.
  5. Full names, which are indicated in personal data, must correspond to real ones - otherwise the site administration may require verification by passport (if the data does not match, then the account will most likely be blocked). nine0020

The restrictions have been sorted out, you can proceed to the procedure.

Changing the name from the phone

Further instructions will be divided into two blocks, since one part of the users works with Facebook through the official mobile application, and the other through the mobile browser version.

Via the app

Since most of the users access Facebook through the mobile app, let's consider this option first.

To change personal data, you need to perform the following sequence of actions:

  1. Launch the official mobile application and click on the icon with three parallel lines.
  2. In the "Help and Settings" menu, find the "Account Settings" item and go to it.
  3. Move to the "General" section and click on the arrow opposite the "Name" block.
  4. Change the full name to a suitable one (available if it has not changed in the last 60 days). Save changes.

As practice shows, the old full name will be stored for a day - no need to think that you did something wrong. This delay is due to the fact that the new data must be verified by the moderator. As soon as the information is approved, the information will be changed automatically. If the data does not pass the verification, the administration of the social network will notify you about it. nine0003

Via browser

You can also use your own Facebook page through any suitable mobile browser. If you work in this way, then follow the instructions below to change the name:

  1. Open the browser version of the social network, click on the settings icon in the upper right corner.
  2. In the menu that appears, go to "Settings".
  3. Next to the "Name" line, click on "Edit".
  4. Enter new data, select how it will be displayed on the page.
  5. Enter your account password to confirm your full name, and then click on "Save changes".

Additionally, you can click on "Add or change the name in your native language" and enter the data in Cyrillic. As a result, the full name will be displayed on the main page in Russian, and next in brackets - in English.

Another relevant feature is adding a maiden name. To do this, go to the "Other names" section and click on "Enter the nickname or name given at birth." nine0003

Conclusion

You can always freely change your first and last name on your own Facebook account if you suddenly made a mistake when registering, changed your last name or took a creative pseudonym directly related to your activity. In most situations, the administration quickly checks new information and confirms its admissibility. If you encounter problems, follow the instructions of the moderators - they will describe why the new data did not pass the test, and help correct the mistakes made. nine0003

How to change your name on Facebook: Add a nickname

April 16, 2022 Matt Mills How to enroll 0

Everyone who added us on Facebook can see our name , but it's also important that it's well set up so they can easily find us. For this reason, we can change our name on Facebook when we want anyone to be able to find us, or simply if we change our name if we want to add an accent if we think it will be easier to find them with a pseudonym or pseudonym. nine0003

Whatever the reason, we can save the same profile under a different name, and we can do this as many times as we want, as long as we respect the rules of the social network. Even though Facebook is outdated compared to other social networks like TikTok or Instagram, we still use it and want it to be well configured.

Change your name to Facebook

We can change your name by logging into our Facebook account from a computer website. Or from the mobile phone app if you have it installed on your mobile phone and you want to change the settings from here. We give you two options and a step by step guide do it in both.

Facebook's only condition is that you can change your name every sixty days. They explain it from the web config: "If you change your Facebook name, you won't be able to change it again for 60 days."

From a browser

If you want to change your name to Facebook we can do it from a computer by going to a browser and logging into our account. We can change the name in the profile settings on the web page and it will only take a few seconds. You should be aware that users will search for you by this name from the moment you change it. Also, you can change it as many times as you want, and Facebook doesn't restrict us from changing it.

  • We open Facebook.com
  • We log in with our email and password
  • We access our profile
  • Go to the top right corner of the screen
  • Tap the down arrow icon
  • A menu will open with various options
  • We select "Settings and privacy" next to the gear icon
  • We touch again in " Settings

Here the general account configuration will be opened and we will have a number of data that we can change as you wish:

  • First and last name
  • Username
  • Contacts
  • Advertising account contact
  • Memorial Account Setup
  • Identity Verification

Next to each section, we can tap "Edit" to change some details. In this case, to change the name. This will be the first thing we will see and you just have to click Edit and three fields will appear: First Name, Middle Name and Last Name. The second one is optional, but you can change the first and last name.

There are requirements: you cannot add any capital letters or punctuation or characters that might be weird. You also cannot add random words, and this is not recommended if you want people to find you easily.

From a mobile phone

We can also change our Facebook name from our mobile phone if we have a social media application installed on our device. iOS or Android smartphone.

  • We open the application > Facebook on our mobile phone
  • Touch the three lines on the right side of the screen
  • Scroll down the screen
  • Touch "settings and privacy"
  • A menu with additional options will open.
  • Select "configuration", the first
  • We will see the various configuration and settings sections.
  • Let's move on to the first group: Account
  • Here select "Personal information and account information"

As in the case of the desktop version, we can change four parameters: name, contact information, proof of identity, ownership and account control. As in the previous case, we must click on " First name and last name ” to display different options: first name, optional middle name, last name. Once we have it, we click "view change" and request a modification.

At the bottom of the screen, we will have the option to select or change the nickname, as we will also see in the next section, if we want to add a regular nickname or want it to appear at the top of the Facebook profile.

Add other names or pronunciations

In addition to our first and last name, we can also fill in other interesting fields such as a nickname, for example, or whatever name you are known by. It is likely that your name is Pepe Perez, but all your friends or relatives know you by a unique nickname that no one else has. In this case, it will be much easier for your friends to search for you on Facebook by this very name, and not by the “official” one, which, for example, only your parents or immediate family know.

Add Facebook alias

In this case, the steps are simple to add a nickname or nickname to our social network profile:

  • We open Facebook
  • Go to our profile
  • Tap on "Information"
  • We select the option "Details about you" in the menu on the left

Here we will see all the options : Information, pronunciation of the name or alias.

We can choose from several options:

  • Nickname
  • maiden name
  • Alternative spelling
  • Married surname
  • The name of your father
  • Name at birth
  • Name with the title
