WhatsApp introduces “View Once” feature to users: Here’s how to use it

Home How To WhatsApp introduces “View Once” feature to users: Here’s how to use it

WhatsApp's new messaging feature is something that's borrowed from Instagram.

WhatsApp's parent company Facebook has taken a page out of their social media service Instagram and is going to introduce the feature of being able to send self-destructing photos and videos within the app. Expected to arrive in the latest update, this feature has been the one of the main features of Snapchat from the beginning, but Instagram implemented it in their app as well a couple years back, and now finally WhatsApp seems to be following suit. “View Once” will let users send photos and videos that, as the name implies, only be viewed once – after it has been opened by the recipient(s), it will automatically self-destruct. It will be gone from everywhere and cannot be forwarded, saved, starred, or shared; WhatsApp has confirmed. Any form of media sent using this feature will not be able to be saved by the recipient, even if the feature to automatically save photos or videos turned on in their smartphones.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if a media sent through the ‘View Once' feature is not opened in a period of 14 days it will automatically be deleted. WhatsApp has asked users to practice caution and send this type of media only to trusted contacts as just like in Snapchat or Instagram, the recipient can still take a screenshot of the media. It is not yet clear if the sender will be notified if a screenshot is taken of such a form of media, as in Snapchat or Instagram.

To use this feature, your WhatsApp needs to be updated to the latest version. To send a media in the View Once feature, you simply have to send a picture as you would before. This means opening any chat, individual or group, and adding a photo or video – either via the camera icon or the paperclip symbol on iOS and Android respectively. Before you press send, press the View Once icon located to the right of the text bar. It is the number one symbol that has a circle around it with the signature green colour associated with WhatsApp. Half the circle is made up of dots.

View Once media can also be sent on the Web App, the Desktop App as well as on KaiOS.

Facebook said: "While taking photos or videos on our phones has become such a big part of our lives, not everything we share needs to become a permanent digital record. On many phones, simply taking a photo means it will take up space in your camera roll forever.

"That's why today we're rolling out new View Once photos and videos that disappear from the chat after they've been opened, giving users even more control over their privacy.

"For example, you might send a View Once photo of some new clothes you're trying on at a store, a quick reaction to a moment in time, or something sensitive like a Wi-Fi password. "

WhatsApp added that, like with personal messages, View Once media will be protected by their state-of-the-art end-to-end encryption so only the sender and the recipient will be able to view it. Messages sent via this feature will appear with a new "one-time" icon. After that the media will appear as "opened" in the chat history. View Once is rolling out to all WhatsApp users starting from this week.

How to use the new View Once feature as app echoes Snapchat in latest update

WhatsApp users will be able to send disappearing photos and videos for the first time as part of an update designed to give users greater control of their privacy.

The Facebook-owned messaging app is following in the footsteps of Snapchat and Instagram by giving users the option to send media intended to be viewed just once.

The update will be available to all users running the most recent version of WhatsApp from this week, the company confirmed.

While disappearing messages have long been associated with sharing risqué content, WhatsApp suggested the “View Once” feature is a useful way to share media users wouldn’t necessarily care about keeping in their camera roll.

These could include photos of outfit options taken in a changing room or snaps of sensitive information such as a router’s name and Wi-Fi password.

WhatsApp has introduced a disappearing photos and videos feature called View Once (Photo: WhatsApp)

“As with all the personal messages you send on WhatsApp, View Once media is protected by end-to-end encryption so WhatsApp cannot see them,” the company wrote in a blog post.

“They will also be clearly marked with a new “one-time” icon.

“After the media has been viewed, the message will appear as ‘opened’ to avoid any confusion about what was happening in the chat at the time.”

Pictures sent using the feature can’t be forwarded, starred or saved and will not be automatically saved to the recipient’s photos or gallery apps.

Only users with blue-tick read receipts turned on will be able to see whether the recipient has opened the picture or video, and media that hasn’t been opened within 14 days of being sent will automatically expire.

However, it is possible to view the unopened picture or video from a backup of WhatsApp chats. Media that’s already been opened will not be available to view for a second time.

WhatsApp also points out that while media is unable to be viewed more than once when sent with the feature, it may be stored on WhatsApp’s servers “for a few weeks” after it was sent.

Similarly, if the recipient chooses to report the disappearing content to WhatsApp, the company will be able to access it.

There is also no way to alert the sender if the recipient takes a screenshot, screen recording or a picture using another device of the disappearing photo or video, Whatsapp cautioned, reminding users to “only send photos or videos with View Once media enabled to trusted individuals.”

Sometimes you need to send a message that would be better if it disappeared after some time. Now WhatsApp has such messages, and below we will tell you how to use them.

First, let's talk about how disappearing messages work and what the limitations are. nine0003

How WhatsApp disappearing messages work

What are WhatsApp disappearing messages ?

All messages in private and group chats will be automatically deleted after 7 days, even if no one reads them. This is handy if you need to share a personal screenshot or content that would be better off disappearing later.

However, these messages can be forwarded or screenshots taken.

Does this affect old messages at WhatsApp ?

No. Only those messages that you send after the function is enabled will disappear.

Can disappearing messages be enabled in group chats?

Yes, disappearing messages are also available in WhatsApp group chats. Only the chat administrator can enable the feature. In private chats, settings can be changed by both participants.

If the message is forwarded, will it be seen?

Yes, but only for 7 days. When the original message disappears, the forwarded message will also disappear. nine0003

Is it possible to recover such a message?

No, messages are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

Is it possible to automatically remove disappearing media from Photos?

No. All media from the messenger will be automatically saved in the Photos app. Even if the photo or video disappears from the chat, it will remain on your device.

If you don't need it, go to Settings WhatsApp > Data and storage and disable Media autoload .
