Introduction
Facebook chat and messages allow you to communicate privately with your friends on Facebook. Unlike the other things you share on Facebook, such as status updates or photos, chats and messages will not be shared with all of your friends or posted on your Timeline.
This lesson will mostly focus on the desktop version of Facebook. If you're using a mobile device, you'll need a separate app called Facebook Messenger to send chats and messages.
Facebook chat
You can communicate in real time with your friends using Facebook chat. Also known as instant messaging, this is a popular way to communicate online.
If you've never used an instant messaging client before, you may want to review our lesson on chat and instant messaging from our Beyond Email tutorial to learn the basics.
Using the Facebook chat:
- Locate and select the chat box in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- A list of friends who are currently available to chat will appear. Select an available friend.
- A chat window will appear. Type your message, then press Enter. Your conversation will appear in the chat window.
- When you're finished, click X to close the chat window or press Esc on your keyboard.
Sending messages with the Messages tab
You can also send messages to Facebook friends via the Messages menu. This can be an easier way to find people if they're offline or if you're having trouble finding them in the chat box.
To send a message:
- Locate and select the Messages icon at the top of the screen, then select New Message.
- A message window will appear. Type the name of the person you want to message, and a list of suggested friends will appear as you type. You can click a suggestion to add a friend to the message.
- Type your message. When you're done, press Enter to send it.
You can also send messages to your friends directly from their Timelines. Simply click the Message button on a friend's Timeline to start a new message.
To go offline:
Some people do not want to be available for chat while on Facebook. You can hide your online status by going offline.
- In the chat box, click the gear icon, then select Turn Off Active Status.
- A window will appear, allowing you to choose which of your contacts can see you as active. Select the option you'd like, then click Okay.
- Your status will change to offline. Click Turn on Active Status to go online again.
The Messenger
The Messenger is where you'll read all of your private communication on Facebook, including your chat conversation history. Whenever you receive a new message or chat, it will appear in the Messenger. From here, it's easy to read, manage, and delete your chats.
To access your inbox, click the Messages icon, then select See All in Messenger. The Messenger will appear.

If you're using a mobile device, you won't be able to send or receive messages within the Facebook app. Instead, you'll need to download and install the Facebook Messenger app. Sending and receiving messages in this app works mostly the same way as it does on the desktop: You can use it for instant messaging and for sending messages to friends who are offline.

How to create an online chat for Facebook Messenger in HubSpot
As soon as you connect your Facebook account to HubSpot, a chat will be created and activated for it immediately.
This is the main chat that will be used on the messenger page. In addition to the main chat, you can create additional chats/bots and use direct links to them in your content.
If after connecting your Facebook account you do not see any incoming messages, then check if this box is selected as the main recipient of inquiries from the messenger.

How to set up Facebook Messenger online chat
In HubSpot, you can set up auto-reply in chat and conversation algorithm:
- Open your HubSpot account and go to Conversations > Chatflows .
- Switch to tab Facebook Messenger .
- Select a chat and click Edit .
- In tab Build , you can customize the chat auto-reply and the question algorithm.
- Click Save .
- To add a direct link to the messenger, go to the Options tab and click Copy (next to the URL).
Such a link can be added to CTAs, emails and on the website.
How to create an additional Facebook Messenger online chat
Only one main chat is allowed per connected Facebook Messenger account. This is the standard chat window that visitors see when they send a message. In addition to the main chat, you can add other chats / bots, as well as use direct links to these chats in your content. Direct links can be written in CTAs, marketing emails and on site pages - then visitors can instantly write to you in the messenger.
To create additional Facebook messenger chats:
- Open your HubSpot account and go to Conversations > Chatflows .

- To add a pause between replies to visitors' messages, use the option Typing delay between messages .
- To set the time interval for resuming a chat session, click on Session timeout and enter the desired value. The chat session will not be resumed if the visitor completed all the actions of the bot during the last session.
- In the Error response text box, you can add a message that the visitor will see if the request fails.
- You can change the language of the bot by pressing Select a language and selecting the desired value.
- If you want the chat window to appear only during your team's business hours, configure this at the mailbox level by selecting the appropriate option in the Availability field.
- Click View in Messenger at the top right to preview the chat in Facebook Messenger.
- Next, you can enable online chat by pressing switch in the upper right corner.
Your new chat will now appear in the Messenger tab of your chat settings. If you add a link to the messenger in your content, then when you click on it, the user will immediately be taken to the messenger page and will be able to chat with you.
To make one of the new chats the main channel for communication on the Facebook Business page, hover over this chat and click More .
